Gregor, Editorial Board Chairman Dr. David Pui addresses session at American Filtration & Separations Society Spring Conference. ven though the country is in an economic downturn, a snapshot of the American Filtration & Separations Society Spring Conference in Minneapolis, May 4th-7th, made it look like the industry was experiencing boom times. According to Suzanne Sower, AFS Executive Manager: “The 2009 and 22nd Annual Spring Conference was the best attended since 2004 when the AFS hosted the World Filtration Conference in New Orleans. We feel attendance was a direct result of the educational knowledge exchange and networking relationship opportunities offered by the AFS to its membership. Under these market conditions, individual and companies can be very choosy where they spend their money, so we are thrilled with the industry support of the AFS.” The number of conference spon- E sorships and exhibitors were also up over recent years, a fact not lost on Dr. Barry Verdegan, AFS chairman, who commented, “Attendance and participation with conference sponsorships and exhibitors from many of the industry’s leading companies, combined with the strength of the short courses and technical program produced our strongest and best attended conference in recent memory.” TECHNICAL PROGRAM The conference began with the eight half- and full-day short courses, taught by many of the industry’s leading technologists and most knowledgeable members. Subjects offered included: Basics in Liquid Filtration & Separations; Basic Gas/Air Filtration & Separations; Advanced Engine Filtration; Advanced Topics in Filter Testing; Microfiltration 6 • August 2009 • www.filtnews.com Membranes; Ultrafiltration Membranes; Nonwoven Air Filtration Media; Electrostatic Charging and Electrets for Air Filters; and Liquid Filtration Testing Basics. The main conference was structured into three tracks consisting of 25 sessions, each with 4 individual presentations over a period of two and a half days. Session topics included: Coalescing, Wastewater Treatment, Microfiltration, Ultrafiltration, Engine Emission Controls, HVAC, Testing, Filtration Media, Biofuels, Fuels, Membranes, Drinking Water, Desalination, Air Standards, Demisting, CFD Simulation, and a number of additional subjects covering both air/gas and liquid. Dr. Neville Bugli, from IBR and 1st vice chairman of the AFS commented, “The conference was quite diverse with a lot of valuable information for everyone who attended.” Attendees were of FiltratioNews-August 2009:FiltNews April 2009 7/1/09 3:48 PM Page 9 FiltratioNews-August 2009:FiltNews April 2009 7/1/09 3:48 PM Page 10 Report | AFS Spring Conference Reception in tabletop location at the AFS conference. many disciplines including senior management, marketing, business development, product development, R&D, and academia. GAC can be manufactured from a wide variety of natural resource materials. Coal and coconut shells are the dominant raw materials to manufacture GAC for the drinking water application (1). All activated carbons are not the same. This variable family of activated carbons have fine micro-, meso-, and macro- pore structures. The micro and meso pores are most useful for accumulating water contaminants (1). These sized pores can be revealed with the Gravimetric Rapid Pore Size Distribution (GRPD) test method. Over the last nine years PACS Laboratories has provided many applications for GRPD (2-17). This paper presents a new application for GRPD. GRPD is now being used to compare the difference between unused and used GAC in drinking water applications and other applications to reveal which pores are filled with adsorbates. By unused GAC we mean starting GAC, which has never been used before. By used GAC we mean unused GAC, which has been through a specific application, such as drinking water or industrial wastewater applications. G WHAT PORES ARE USED? For a potential or actual activated carbon user it is important to know what pores (adsorption spaces) are needed in the specific application. There are a myriad of different acti- vated carbons and applications. Most activated carbon users do not know what pores that are used in their applications. Today it is possible for users to determine what pores are needed. Knowing what pores are filled in the application provides the opportunity to select a carbon with more of the pores they need. With more pores in the application, the user can expect the finished water to be improved and provide them with longer service times. GRPD RESULTS EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Four client samples (Chart A) of granular activated carbon (GAC) were fully characterized using the Gravimetric Rapid Pore Size Distribution (GRPD) method. Two samples were unused GAC and two were used from the unused GAC samples. (The client has determined the definition of used). The unused GAC were Calgon F-400 (Y-334) and Norit 830 (Y-336). All four samples were compared to each other and a commercially available PCB coconut-based carbon of approximately 1200 iodine number. None of the samples had a weight loss greater than 2.3% on conditioning (heating the samples to 150ºC in argon and holding for 25 minutes). Losses of less than 8 percent indicate a well-stored sample that has been protected from moisture pick-up from ambient air during handling and storage and was also fresh and not oxidized. In terms of total adsorption pore volume Chart A 10 • August 2009 • www.filtnews.com both unused samples out-performed the used version by 16.8% and 14.9%, respectively. The difference between the unused GAC themselves is only about 3%, and the difference between the used GAC samples is less than 1%. However, the difference in used samples is dependent on the material adsorbed and the degree to which the carbon is saturated. All four samples were similar in terms of the shape of their characteristic curves, but subtle differences in pore structure at different adsorption energy levels can be seen in the differential characteristic curves. GRPD METHOD SUMMARY Each GRPD run measured more than 300 adsorption and desorption data points covering seven orders of magnitude in relative pressure (isothermal basis), and three orders of magnitude in carbon loading. The mass adsorbed was also divided by the carbon mass to generate a weight percent loading for easier comparison. The raw data is plotted in Figure 2. At 150ºC the adsorbent gas, C134a or 1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane (TFE), is introduced and the loading increases as temperature is decreased. Note in Figure 2 that the mass loading was plotted against temperature but the relative pressure was also changing. There are three variables affecting performance that change from point to point: vapor pressure, partial pressure, and temperature. To make comparisons easier, the large data file of adsorption and desorption points at different temperatures and relative pressures was simplified. First the data was interpolated to get 30 evenly spaced points covering the entire data range. Next the adsorption and desorption results were averaged to get the equilibrium values (the difference FiltratioNews-August 2009:FiltNews April 2009 7/1/09 3:48 PM Page 13 Figure 1. Table 1. between adsorption and desorption was minimal for this sample – no hysteresis). The y-axis is converted to pore volume measures, in cc liquid adsorbed or cc pores filled per 100 grams carbon, in- stead of weight percent. The average interpolated data for these characteristic curves is presented in Table 1, and Figures 1 and 1b expanded. PERFORMANCE PREDICTION MODELS These curves are the only carbon related information required to predict www.filtnews.com • August 2009 • 11 Figure 1b. physical adsorption performance using the Polanyi Adsorption Potential theory. These single and multi-component, gas and liquid phase computer models are used to predict carbon performance and are available from PACS. Characteristic curve polynomials are also listed in Appendix A. ADSORPTION ISOTHERMS The characteristic curves are also translated into adsorption isotherms using the programs mentioned above: Figure 3 for MTBE (weakly adsorbed material), Figure 4 for benzene (more strongly adsorbed species) and Figure 5 for phenol at pH=7 (quite strongly adsorbed material). PORE SIZE DISTRIBUTIONS The Kelvin equation, modified by Halsey, can be used to convert the characteristic curve data to calculated BET surface areas or pore size distributions. This is not useful in terms of performance evaluations, but some audiences are more comfortable with the concepts of pore radius and a series of capillary sizes when thinking about activated carbon. Figure 6 shows the cumulative pore size distributions that we include but find of little use. The single and multi point BET surface area was calculated 12 • August 2009 • www.filtnews.com from these curves. CONCLUSION The amount contaminants loaded onto GAC is directly related to the influent concentrations. In drinking water applications the raw water has low concentrations, which results in lightly loaded used GAC. GAC is completely used when the influent and effluent are equal. Drinking water GAC applications use 3-20% of the original total pore volume in the unused GAC. This pore volume difference between unused and used GAC can be revealed by the GRPD test method. In contrast to drinking water applications, industrial GAC usage typically results in use of 20-70% of the original total pore volume in the unused GAC. Industrial GAC applications typically have PPM concentrations in the raw water and drinking water has PPB concentrations in the influent. Joseph here are several ways to add filtration systems to existing coolant reservoirs without investing large sums of money and save on the costs of coolant disposal. The three techniques are to install the following: T • A sidearm coolant cleaning device to an existing reservoir with no filtration. • A coolant “polishing” device to improve the clarity of an existing filtration system. • An off-line coolant recovery system for batches removed from individual machines. This article is the first in a series of three on how to implement the techniques. During difficult economic times each of these techniques are possible with a minimum investment and the potential of a “quicker” payback from the money saved by reducing the number of coolant dumps and disposal. The key is to not necessarily look for a total revamping project, but to use the funds for dumping as a budget to improve the system to where dumping frequency is reduced and a net savings is realized. SIDEARM COOLANT Sidearm filtration (known as bypass or kidney loop) is when a cleaning device works off a single reservoir to clean the fluid and send it back to the same reservoir. Figure 1 shows that it is an added cleaning unit where none existed before. Although the term filtration is mainly used, the units could be any cleaning mechanism including filters, centrifuges, magnetic separators or retention tanks. DETERMINE THE BUDGET RANGE The premise of this approach is to see if the money spent for dumping and disposing of dirty coolant can be used to install a filtration system which would improve the coolants’ clarity and dumping would be less frequent. The goal is to have the combination of new filtration and less dumping to be at a lower annual cost. This is based on the fact that trucking or treating waste coolants is viable, and in compliance with the environmental laws. If they are not, then the economics take on a completely different set of inputs. There will be advantages in tool life, machine maintenance and lower scrap, but these items can only be estimated and usually take too long to quantify. These rewards will be measurable after the system is in place. Since the majority of Figure 1. Sidearm system Figure 2. 14 • August 2009 • www.filtnews.com the costs are related to dumping, disposing and replenishment, efforts to determine their costs should yield a general idea of the money involved. The calculations can be simple arithmetic for a given system: 1. Calculate the volume of liquid dumped and disposed in one year. 2. Determine the cost of disposing of each gallon (trucking away, waste treatment). 3. The volume of disposed fluid by the cost per gallon will give an annual cost. 4. Add labor costs for each dump for the same year if they are significant. 5. Add the cost of the fluids which are needed to replenish the dumped coolant. 6. The total will be the target for the annual expenditures. Of course the quantities of fluid should be large enough to justify some action. That does not mean the facility has to be a large process. It could be a relatively small volume operation, which is dumped often in weekly or monthly cycles. For example, a typical metalworking operation with a 5,000-gallon reservoir, which is dumped every 6 weeks, costs about $53,280.00 per year. The recog- FiltratioNews-August 2009:FiltNews April 2009 7/1/09 3:49 PM Page 17 nizable scenario includes: coolant disposal cost of $1.00 per gallon, new coolant concentrate at $8.00 per gallon, and the mixed coolant concentration at 4 percent. This does not count some labor costs, which may be applicable. Even if the money is saved quickly there usually is not enough cash to install a full flow system, which would extend the life of the coolant indefinitely; plus it would take too much time. Therefore, it is more realistic to see if a sidearm system could be added and achieve the goal where the combination of installing/operating a new filter and the lower number of dumps can save money. SIDEARM OPTIONS Sidearm selections are usually based on using a flow rate as a percentage of the process flow rate. Also, it can be based on the number of times, within a given time period, the reservoir’s volume is sent through the cleaning device, i.e., 5,000 gallons at a rate of 50GPM has a turnover every 100 min- Figure 3. The current economic climate is an ideal time for sellers to locate buyers seeking to diversify and for buyers to identify growth opportunities through acquisition. 7/1/09 3:50 PM Page 18 Filtration | Metalworking Coolant utes. Then the turnover flow rate can be converted to a percent of the process flow. Both criteria play an important role in determining the sidearm flow rate. Large tanks may have settling and a low sidearm flow rate may not induce enough turbulence to keep the unwanted material suspended. Determining the sidearm flow rates as a percent of process flow rates allows the use of field data, which is reflected in the math models of systems as shown in Figure 2. The curves plot the contaminant levels versus time (intervals) for different filtration schemes. The curves compare the number of dumps when there is “no filtration” with the number of dumps when a sidearm flow rate is either at 10 or 50 percent of the process flow and the device is at least 95 percent efficient. The curve for a full flow system is also shown. Therefore, if the reservoir had a 10 percent flow through a sidearm system it would be dumped just once during the same period where No Filtration would be dumped 4 times. If the cost to install and operate the 10 percent system and the one dump is less than the cost for four dumps, the project is economically justified. A 50 percent system would dump the reservoir just once for every 6 dumps with No Filtration. The savings of two less dumps over the 10 percent system could justify the 50 percent system. CLEANING DEVICES The most common devices installed as sidearm systems are: For a confidential conversation contact: Edward C. Gregor 704-442-1940 [email protected] P. John Lovell 719-375-1564 [email protected] • Flat bed pressure filters with roll media; Figure 3 shows a compact module. • Cartridge filters with disposable elements • Bag Filters with disposable bags • Centrifuges There are other devices, which could serve, but they are not as common. These include flat bed vacuum, gravity filters, and magnetic separators 16 • August 2009 • www.filtnews.com for ferrous operations. Selection and sizing of the device must consider the manufacturers guidelines for the application or benchmarks established with similar installations. In addition, there are other opportunities to minimize equipment costs. A number of reconditioned “used” cleaning devices are now available at a lower cost. Many filtration suppliers offer leasing and rental programs payable in monthly increments. It may be possible to use a transportable sidearm module and move it among a number of tanks on a routine schedule. FOLLOW THROUGH Granted, this method is outlining a different approach for justification to invest in filtration to save money. This cursory review offers a guide on how to quickly measure the magnitude of the economics. However, once the range of economics is established, the need to cover the details is important to insure the logic is sound. Not all reservoirs are created equal. Some will not qualify for any number of reasons. Others may not necessarily follow the math model, but still be a feasible candidate. The concept should be reviewed by all involved and by outside resources if more know-how on filtration options is needed. Here are just a few of the fundamental questions, which should be asked for follow through. 1. Are the reservoirs dumped for reasons other than suspended contaminants? 2. Will a reduced dumping volume change the cost per gallon to treat or truck away? 3. What turnover rate will be practical? 4. What are the true operating costs for the sidearm device? These loading tests are performed at either 85 ± 4 liters per minute for filtering face pieces and single filters, or 42.5 ± 2 liters per minute where filters are to be used in pairs. Air Techniques International (ATI) is introducing a new automated filter tester, the 100S, to address industrytesting needs with regard to the sodium chloride testing requirement, complimenting the current TDA-100P oil aerosol model. The 100S Salt Aerosol Automated Filter Tester provides very comparable results to the current single source instrument in the industry. However, its simple yet progressive design allows the 100S to exceed in areas where the competition falls short by offering features and benefits to maximize operator productivity and minimize service and maintenance while keeping everything easy for the end user. At almost twice the aerosol concentration of the competition, load tests can be performed in half the time. By utilizing appropriately sized and designed photometric detection and a creative, yet simplified, pneumatic design approach, the 100S is capable of full flow sampling and measurement – both upstream and downstream – with a single solid-state photometric detector. This not only reduces the number of detection components, but also has a ripple effect with regard to the overall plumbing, A valving, required system filtration, and support flow and resistance measurements, guaranteeing accurate and stable operation of the instrument. Another result of this simplified design is not only less overall maintenance and service, but also easier accessibility to serviceable items and components. Furthermore, the 100S also minimizes daily routine maintenance with its patent pending aerosol generation and automatic aerosol reagent replenishment system. The 100S is a bench top tester with an optional lower base/cabinet on casters and an optional local exhaust module. It is ideally suited for testing filters and filtering face pieces with efficiencies up to www.filtnews.com • August 2009 • 17 99.9995%. Verification tests assured the aerosol meets the requirements of the NIOSH standard of 0.075±0.020 µm count median diameter and a geometric standard deviation of less than 1.86 at flow rates up to 100 L/min. The measurements were taken with a TSI Scanning Mobility Particle Sizer (SMPS). Simply put, the 100S was designed to meet a known industry standard and, most importantly, with the customer in mind. It offers reliable, consistent testing results with a lower initial cost, lower service and calibration expenses, reduced equipment down time, and significantly faster and “set and forget” load testing.
