WHAT’S BREWING AUGUST 2011 Volume 26 Issue 8 INSIDE THIS ISSUE • Boyds Supports The Big Table • Lynnwood Team Provides Coffee at Charity Golf Tournament • Communications Survey Drawing Winners Announced • Wellness Corner: Sun Protection • Benefits Update: Zoo Membership BOYD COFFEE COMPANY SUPPORTS THE BIG TABLE, A NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION ASSISTING FOODSERVICE EMPLOYEES IN NEED Founded in Spokane, Washington, in 2009 by restaurant reviewer Kevin Finch, The Big Table is a unique nonprofit organization dedicated to fostering relationships among restaurant-industry employees and assisting foodservice workers in times of difficulty. The Big Table accomplishes this via a “shared table experience,” a place for workers to connect during a meal. While volunteers serve the dinner, the guests talk about their jobs and personal lives and can reach out for assistance, if needed, or they can suggest other workers who might want help. Finch explained how the Big Table idea came about: “I am obsessed with food and I love to write, and I also love Continued on page 2. Photo: A dinner at The Big Table. Photo courtesy Kevin Finch. But while I was writing about the area’s restaurants, and eating out oen, I also saw and heard about a lot of disenfranchised, hurting people working in the foodservice industry, which can be a cauldron of stress.” “According to the National Restaurant Association, foodservice is the nation’s largest employer, but the industry also has a high rate of substance abuse, divorce, financial difficulties and other personal challenges,“ Finch pointed out. “Additionally, most people in foodservice work odd hours, making it difficult for to connect with the community,” Finch said. “I saw a great need to help these folks, and I couldn’t find a single organization specifically dedicated to caring for those in foodservice,” Finch noted. And, while larger restaurant chains or other industry employers may have employee assistance programs, Finch discovered that many workers resisted using them. Finch’s empathy also stems from his own background as a Presbyterian pastor for more than 15 years. “However,” he said, “I found that mentioning I was a pastor was generally a turn off to most foodservice workers.” Then Kevin hit upon an idea, the big table. “Foodservice workers would naturally connect around a meal,” Kevin explained. “If we are serious about helping folks, it has to be about establishing relationships first, and gathering around a table to have dinner is a comfortable, safe and nonjudgmental way to make positive connections,” he said. Finch then procured a very large wooden table (it seats 40 to 45 people) Continued on page 3. AUGUST 2011 2 THE BIG TABLE, Continued from Page 2. built with the help of two Spokane-area architects, and he uses his van to move it to a new location for the every-other-month meal gatherings (the table breaks down into smaller sections). The dinners are by invitation and are at no cost; all of the food and beverages are donated or purchased by The Big Table nonprofit organization. Some of Spokane’s renowned chefs, including Boyds customer Chad Michelbrook from Northern Quest Casino, prepare the meal for free, while restaurant owners and suppliers volunteer to be the evening’s servers, giving the diners a well-earned night off. Boyd Coffee Company’s Sco Lochhead, RSM Region 10, was quick to offer support for The Big Table, knowing that Finch’s idea was solid and would bring the foodservice community together in a new, creative and helpful way. Boyds donated coffee to several Big Table dinners, provided an auction donation for the Big Table fundraiser, and members of the Spokane Sales Team have worked as servers during several of the meals. Since the dinners began in 2009, The Big Table assisted more than 100 foodservice workers, including replacing a laptop for a barista who had hers stolen right before her midterm exams, providing furniture for a the family of a prep cook (they were living in an empty apartment), and giving grocery gi cards to a waitress with overwhelming medical bills and two children to support. Kevin emphasized that not all Big Table assistance takes a financial form. “This winter, one of our Big Table volunteers called me and said, ‘I am a person in need.’ She had just taken her mother off life support at the hospital, and she asked, ‘Would you please come over and pray with me? I don’t know anyone else to call.’ I said, ‘Of course.’ We offer that kind of help, too.” As the needs of foodservice workers grew, this spring The Big Table held their first fundraising dinner and auction, which raised more than $35,000. “We couldn’t have done it without the support of companies like Boyds,” Finch said. Boyd Coffee Company embraced our vision and chose to support us early, while others held back. We really appreciate it.” Now that The Big Table has been firmly established in Spokane, Finch is taking the table on the road. In late July, he visited the Boyds Roastery for a tour and coffee cupping with Michael Boyd and Katy Boyd Du. The group is also planning a Big Table dinner in Seale this fall. “People in the foodservice industry are mobile, so we have to be mobile as well. Ultimately, its our vision to make The Big Table a national organization,” Finch concluded. Stiles is a Seale-born actor and comedian known for his role as Lewis Kiniski on the Drew Carey Show. He also performs on the improvisational comedy show Whose Line Is It Anyway? BOYDS JOINS WITH CUSTOMER SILVER REEF CASINO TO SUPPORT CHARITY GOLF TOURNAMENT Gary Mitzel, AE Lynnwood, Steve Sewell, DSR 32 Burlington, and Gary’s daughter, Ashleigh, spent Sunday, July 17, providing coffee and espresso drinks for the annual Ryan Stiles Celebrity Golf Classic, held at the Semiahmoo Resort near Bellingham, Washington. The event sponsorship, in conjunction with Boyds Coffee® customer Silver Reef Casino, earned funds for the Burned Children Recovery Foundation, which supports young burn victims and their families, friends and community members. “Our coffee was a big hit at the tournament,” Gary said. “The weather was cool and damp, so coffee was a blessing, according to the crowd. We set up the cart at 9 in the morning and went non-stop until the 1 p.m. scramble.” a COMMUNICATIONS SURVEY WINNERS ANNOUNCED; THANK YOU FOR RESPONDING! Ultraviolet (UV) rays can damage our skin and may raise our risk of sun cancer. So, we stock up on sunscreen — and try to remember to apply it. But, there’s more to sun safety than having sunblock on hand. To help remember that, the American Cancer Society offers this catchphrase: “Slip! Slop! Slap!...and Wrap!” Slip on a shirt. If you can cover up, do. This will reduce your UV exposure. Ideally, this means loose-fiing garments made of tightly woven fabrics, preferably with long sleeves and legs. When that’s not practical, at least consider a T-shirt or a wrap. Dark colors generally block more rays. Slop on sunscreen. Lotions, lip balms and other sunscreen products help safeguard skin. Choose those with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15. Some experts recommend SPF 30 or higher. Look for products that protect against both UVA and UVB rays. And, don’t just toss it in your bag. Put plenty on before you head outdoors. Reapply every two hours or aer sweating or swimming. Check the expiration date on sunscreen — it can become less effective over time. Replace products as needed. Slap on a hat. Make it wide-brimmed so it shades your face, ears and neck. Wrap your eyes in protection. Sunglasses can guard your eyes. A wraparound style can protect the skin it covers, too. a ©2011 United HealthCare Services, Inc.
