It has been a great year and I wish to congratulate the students on all of the great successes that they have played a role in, this past year. A heartfelt thanks goes out to staff, students and our community for the continuous participation in, contributions to, and support of school life at SHS. It has been another tremendous year in so many ways in, and out, of the classroom. In the music department, over $20 000. was raised through a 4Cs Foundation grant ($10 000), a Musicounts/ Caras grant ($10 000), and a Department of Education Advanced Music Grant ($1 000). These monies were used to create the Bach to Music Project which involved 200 school and community musicians and to purchase needed instruments for the band. The school band will culminate the year taking Beethoven, Bach, and the Beatles on a tour of schools in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick at the end of May. The drama department had a successful show at the Seventh Annual Playwrights cabaret collaborating with the Tourism 12 class who also was responsible for assisting in successfully hosting the Second Annual Parent Appreciation evening held May 2. From the Gay Straight Alliance which celebrated several successful events with the student body including a diversity awareness campaign over Christmas and peaceful, community building in the fall, and through an ongoing awareness campaign to the many endeavours of the Students’ Council and sports teams which are too numerous to mention, our students, supported by staff, have been busy. Having a family agreement around online activity is a good idea. It’s a great way for families to work together on how to be safe, wise and responsible while online. Here are some guidelines to help start the conversation! (It is always a good idea to put computers that your children use in areas where access and supervision are easily managed.) • Always get parental permission before giving out any personal information online. This includes your name, gender, telephone number, home or e-mail address, location of your school, your parents' work address, email addresses or telephone numbers, their credit card number information, and pictures of you or members of your family. • When online always use an online name or a name that prevents other people online from knowing anything about you. • When creating a password make one up that is hard for someone else to guess but easy for you to remember. Never reveal it to anyone (except your parents or a trusted adult) -not even your best friend. • Show an adult any message or website that contains derogatory content. • Never arrange to meet a friend you have met online unless a parent or an adult that you trust will be going with you. • Ask an adult first before opening any e-mail, files, links, pictures or games from people that you do not know or do not trust. • Check the source of the information you find online to see if it is true or not, and confirm it with a parent or teacher. • Practice responsible online behaviour – think before you send any messages to other people. Ask yourself, “Is this a message I would like to receive?” • Make sure you leave any filtering software your parents have placed on the computer unaltered; unless you have your parents’ permission. • If you are being threatened or harassed online tell an adult you trust and leave the online area or stop the online activity you are involved in immediately.
