Graduation Ceremony
Senior Protocol Booklet
This document was created to promote positive lifelong graduation ceremony memories
for everyone. If any senior does not follow the expectations contained in this booklet or is
disrespectful during the graduation ceremony, a meeting with his/her parent(s) and the
Principal, Mr. Schwenk, will be required before the actual diploma is released. Appropriate
behavior and attire are expected from all for the duration of our graduation ceremony. It
should also be noted that parades in the community are not sanctioned by the school
and could result in prosecution by local authorities.

You MUST have met all of your obligations today to receive your diploma tommorow.

Students Report To The Gym By 5:00 PM.
Seniors:
* Remember that participation in graduation is a PRIVILEGE not a student right.
* In order for you to be a part of graduation activities, SENIORS MUST:
report to the scheduled practices and graduation activities listed.
* For Awards Day and Graduation please dress appropriately,
Shorts and Jeans are NOT permitted for either Awards Day or Graduation.
If you wear shorts or jeans, you will NOT be allowed to participate.
Please wear suitable footwear.
* REMINDER:
It is your responsibility to be certain that you have satisfied all financial and
textbook obligations as well as graduation requirements including Senior Project.
If you fail to satisfy these obligations, your diploma will be withheld.
Obligations
No student will receive a diploma until all obligations are met.
Dress Code
Hat:
The hat (mortarboard) is a symbol of academic achievement and honor. It is worn flat on the head with the tip
in front and two fingers above the eyebrows. It should not be perched on the back of the head. Try the hat on at
home to see if you need hairpins to keep your hat on when walking.
Tassels:
You will wear the tassel on the right hand side.
Robes:
Graduation robes should be worn so that the hem hangs evenly in the front and back.
The robe should not be ironed. Hang it in your bathroom while taking a hot shower and the steam will take the
wrinkles out.
Ladies, make sure your dress is not longer than your robe. Jeans and shorts.are NOT acceptable under
your robe. Gentlemen, wear dress pants.
Footwear:
Please make sure you can comfortably walk up and down the stairs to the stage and wear appropriate
footwear. NO FLIP-FLOPS, SNEAKERS, OR BOOTS.
Other:
No other items, signs, bands, chords, or lettering are authorized to be worn other than those approved by
NHS.
This is a special occasion and you should dress accordingly!
Graduation Ceremony
Marching:
Leave 1 yard between you and the next person. Make sure that you keep the pace set for you by the
marshals.
Stage:
When you are getting ready to receive your diploma, stand on the top step until the person in front of you
has had his/he:r name called and moved to the center of the stage. Then move to the designated waiting
place. Receive the Diploma with your left hand and shake the hand of presenter with your :right hand.
Turning the Tassel:
You will be turning the tassel as a ceremonial procedure at a designated point in the ceremony. The cue is
when the official person says: "By the power vested in me by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, I now
pronounce you graduates of Greater Nanticoke Area High School.” On the word "pronounce,” put your
LEFT hand on your tassel; on the word "graduates,” move the tassel to the left.
When to Remove Hats:
Men will remove their hats when the flags are presented, leave them OFF during the
National Anthem and Pledge of Allegiance, and put them back on after the pledge.
You will leave them on the rest of the ceremony.
Behavior:
-Graduation is a special occasion. It is a ceremony to honor the time and effort it has taken for you to
reach this milestone. Everyone has planned this day for a long time. The guests are not only your family
members and friends, but former principals, school board m embers, the superintendent, and other
dignitaries.
-We expect you to act in a manner that will show you consider it special. Many people are honoring you!
-ALL guests deserve to hear their student's name being announced.
-Please refrain from any loud celebrating during the ceremony.
-No unauthorized objects should be thrown or passed during the ceremony.
Access:
-Inform administration in advance if you are expecting guests with disabilities who may need
special assistance with access to the building.
