2014 PHILANTHROPY REPORT Bold Science. Life-Changing Cures. We are pleased to announce that David Vargo has become the new Chair of the Trustees. A longtime friend of Mass. Eye and Ear, Daivd brings passion, energy and commitment to his new position. To learn more about our research, patient care and the worldwide attention it is receiving, go online to: MassEyeAndEar.org/InTheNews DEAR FRIENDS, Two words come to mind when we consider the last year: generosity (yours) and gratitude (ours!). We are amazed by your extraordinary desire to help us achieve the primary goal of Mass. Eye and Ear: to find cures that will enable every child born today to see and hear throughout her lifetime. While this report is a small attempt to say thanks, you will see even deeper gratitude demonstrated by the resolve of our clinicians and scientists to further advance discovery and innovation. Your generosity fuels their progress. 2014 was an outstanding year for the hospital, but no initiative brought us more excitement than the advancement of Bold Science. Life-Changing Cures. The Campaign for Mass. Eye and Ear. Now in its fourth year, the campaign allows us to more broadly invest in the incredible research, care and teaching happening here every day. You will see in the pages that follow the wonderful responses we have received from you — patients, generous friends and people who believe in our mission. Simply put, you have helped us to more than double annual fundraising for Mass. Eye and Ear in just the last three years. In the coming months we expect to more publicly announce Bold Science. Life-Changing Cures. The Campaign for Mass. Eye and Ear (you heard it here first). Then the real work begins! We hope that you will remain a close friend and partner – helping us to tell the great stories of outstanding patient care and exciting discoveries. Thank you for the important role that you play in our success. Sincerely, Wyc Grousbeck John Fernandez Chairman of the Board President & CEO 1 STEM CELL THERAPY TO REVERSE CORNEAL BLINDNESS For the first time in the United States, people blinded by severe corneal disease will participate in a clinical trial using their own stem cells to attempt to biologically restore their vision. “I am very proud of the incredible work that Drs. Jurkunas and Dana have accomplished. When they came to me six years ago with a bold plan to revolutionize corneal transplantation, I was excited and wanted to help. Now I am thrilled to see our plan Ula Jurkunas, M.D. and vision coming to fruition.” — Tamra Gould Principal Investigator, Ula Jurkunas, M.D., in collaboration with Reza Dana, M.D., Ph.D., have pioneered a stem cell transplantation technique for patients blinded by corneal disease where standard corneal transplantation is not an option. Using healthy stem cells from the patient’s good eye, Dr. Jurkunas and her team, including fellow Kishore Reddy, Ph.D., will grow corneal cells externally in the laboratory and then transplant new cornea cell sheets onto the diseased eye, restoring function to the cornea. The team later hopes to perfect this method using stem cells from the patient’s mouth, which will enable a solution for patients with two diseased eyes. With generous support from a number of Mass. Eye and Ear friends, including Tamra Gould, Chris Snook and Susan Stoddart, David Vargo and Sheila Collins, and the Grinnell Fund, the team has advanced this work to achieve a historic milestone. The Food and Drug Administration has approved their request to begin performing these experimental stem cell therapies in humans for the first time in the United States through a human trial that will begin in the coming months. This is a giant step toward our goal of preserving and restoring vision for patients with corneal disease. These efforts are conducted in collaboration with the Center for Human Cell Therapy at Children’s Hospital and the Connell O’Reilly Cell Manipulation Core Facility at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, combining their expertise in the development and manufacturing of clinical grade stem cell therapies with our surgical corneal expertise. 2 photo: Rui Ochoa WINNING THE HIGHEST DISTINCTION IN VISION RESEARCH Napoleone Ferrara, M.D., Anthony Adamis, M.D., Lloyd P. This extraordinary effort is made of those runners who returned to finish the race, just one year possible thanks to our long partnership with Boston Marathon after the marathon bombing. 102 runners raised a remarkable lead sponsor John Hancock Financial Services and the patients, $850,000 — which brings the overall Team Eye and Ear total friends, doctors, nurses and staff who sacrifice time and toil (and knees) to push Mass. Eye and Ear closer to cures. 4 O N E F U N D C E N T E R C R E AT E D T O T R E AT I N V I S I B L E W O U N D S The Center relies on specialists and scientists, including Daniel J. Lee, M.D., Daniel B. Polley, Ph.D., Alicia M. Quesnel, M.D., and Aaron K. Nicknamed the “Smile Doctor,” Dr. Hadlock is an expert in surgical techniques that rewire a patient’s face — literally — by transplanting nerves and tissue to paralyzed areas to renew facial movement. “As a patient of Dr Hadlock, I know firsthand the importance of her knowledge of facial nerve disorders and their surgical cures. We are delighted to partner with her in training the next generation of specialists. It feels good Tessa Hadlock, M.D. to know that others with facial nerve problems will benefit as a result.” — Charles Vadakin As chief of Mass. Eye and Ear’s Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Division, Dr. Hadlock and her team have treated over 2,000 patients with facial nerve paralysis since 2002, including many victims of domestic violence. Their dedication has impacted the lives of many people, renewing hope and providing a new start for many who had nearly given up. Dr. Hadlock recognizes that in order to help more people, additional facial nerve and facial reconstruction specialists are urgently needed. The Division offers two fellowships, providing hands-on experience in diagnosing, treating and operating on patients while also learning how to become academic physicians dedicated to improving treatments through research. Grateful patients like Charles and Anne Vadakin help to make these fellowships possible. 6 photo: Sam Ogden PROVIDING THE HIGHEST QUALITY CARE In 2014, Mass. Koch. In addition to his steadfast commitment to curing cancer, Mr. Koch has a keen interest in new treatments for hearing loss. That interest led him to Albert Edge, Ph.D., a leading scientist at Mass. Eye and Ear’s Eaton-Peabody Laboratories. Mr. Koch and Dr. Edge first talked in New York City where Dr. Edge was lecturing on new approaches for regenerating inner ear hearing cells. “When I met Dr. Edge, I saw that he was making important progress toward treatments for hearing loss, a problem that has long eluded physicians and scientists,” said Mr. Koch. Since that initial visit, Dr. Edge has published a major breakthrough in Neuron, a top scientific journal, showing how he partially restored hearing in a mammal by replacing the key cells for hearing, the first time that David H. Koch has been done. “Mr. Koch has been a great partner and champion for the science. He has a good understanding Dr. Edge is one of 27 principal investigators in the of the challenges and the full potential of this work,” world-renowned Eaton-Peabody Laboratories, all said Dr. Edge. “His support has been very important for focused on understanding hearing as well as the issues our success.” that lead to deafness. The progress in hearing science has enabled important advances in restoration of hearing that will ultimately make hearing loss a treatable condition and have a huge impact on quality of life for people everywhere. 10 photo: Sam Ogden EXPANDING OUR REACH In 2014, 23 new faculty members joined Mass. Eye and Ear scientists to accelerate innovation and discovery. Since 2007 they have championed the research of Dr. Zheng-Yi Chen in the Eaton-Peabody Laboratories. “We first read about Zheng-Yi in the Boston Globe and we were fascinated by his work to regrow inner ear hearing cells. We called him up and asked to meet and learn more,” said Fred Yeatts. “Since then Zheng-Yi has made Fred Yeatts, Demetrios Vavvas, M.D., Ines Yeatts huge strides forward. It’s exciting to see his work advancing the field towards treatments to restore hearing.” “Drs. Miller and Vavvas are passionate and dedicated. We know that by supporting their research, others will benefit greatly with improved vision. They inspire us.” — Ines Yeatts The Yeatts’ interest in research goes beyond hearing to also include vision and the breakthrough research in agerelated macular degeneration led by Drs. Joan W. Miller and Demetrios Vavvas. 12 BRINGING LIGHT TO A WORLD GOING DIM At the age of 17, Candyce was diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa (RP), a rare degenerative eye disease that causes severe vision impairment and blindness. As an active teenager, with a passion for tennis, RP was a devastating diagnosis. Seeking the best care, the Texas teen’s mother took her to every doctor she could find. Her search eventually led them Candyce and Sherri Lane Henwood to Mass. Eye and Ear where they met Dr. Eric Pierce who leads Mass. Eye and Ear’s world-renowned Ocular Genomics Institute. Dr. Pierce and his team are working hard to find cures for blinding conditions like RP. The Henwood family left Boston with hope for the future – something they had not found anywhere else. Today, Candyce is a junior at the University of Texas in Tyler. She continues to work closely with Dr. Pierce and his team at Mass. Eye and Ear. “My vision is declining, as is typical with RP, however, I am doing everything I can to remain positive. I have tremendous confidence in the doctors at Mass. Eye and Ear – and I know that in time, there will be a treatment for me.” — Candyce Henwood Several years ago, Candyce provided a blood sample to Dr. Pierce with hopes that he could identify the precise gene causing her vision loss. “Dr. Pierce was able to do just that – he identified my defective gene,” she said. “That was step one! The next step is to replace this bad gene or repair it so that my sight can be saved and lost vision restored. This process is called gene therapy and it offers tremendous hope and promise to millions of people, like me, going blind from retinal disease.” To help in the fight against blindness, the Henwood family established the Candyce Lane Henwood Gene Therapy Research Fund at Mass. Eye and Ear. Their goal was $100,000 but with the incredible support of their community they raised nearly $285,000 from a fundraiser they held in their hometown of Cuero, Texas. 13 A S E N S E - AT I O N A L S U C C E S S !
