Advancing Cures
Mass. Eye and Ear Board Chair Wyc Grousbeck and Corinne Grousbeck
(pictured on left) and the entire Grousbeck family have pledged $5 million
to establish the Grousbeck Center for Gene Therapy, the Grousbeck Family
Chair in Gene Therapy, and to support Mass. Eye and Ear’s world-class
facilities where this highly innovative research will take place.
The Grousbeck Center for Gene Therapy aims to develop sight-restoring
new treatments for people with inherited blindness. The Center is directed
by Luk H. Vandenberghe, Ph.D., a leading scientist who has invented,
developed and translated many enabling technologies for gene therapy. At
the Grousbeck Center he is leading an ambitious research program focused
on the discovery of improved and novel vectors to replace diseased genes
with new healthy genes to restore vision.

Team Eye and Ear Strong
April 15, 2013 started as a typical Marathon Monday. Nurses and
physicians were busy caring for patients, while 40 members of Team Eye
and Ear were busy running 26.2 miles to raise funds for research and
clinical care. No one expected the unthinkable, but it came. After the first
bomb exploded, both teams sprang into action. Mass. Eye and Ear’s doctors
and nurses cared for more than 70 patients over the course of the year. On
April 21, 2014 Team Eye and Ear laced up their sneakers and returned in
2014 to finish together what they started last year. Each was motivated by
his or her own reason, but they all shared one thing: they are Mass. Eye
