School Bulletin Term 3 Week 2 20 July 2011 Telephone: 3454 4447 Email: [email protected] Website: www.iggs.qld.edu.au Absentee Line: 3454 4415 Sportsline: 3454 4445 Success and happiness often result from a sharp, unrelenting focus on a goal, careful planning and lots and lots of hard work. When people accept accolades about their successes, they often acknowledge the support of others and how it helped them remain focussed, assisted their planning or sustained them during the hard work. Ashleigh Barty, the 15 year old Woodcrest College student who recently won the Girls’ Singles Tennis Championship at Wimbledon, is an inspirational example of the importance of goal setting, careful planning, hard work and having a supportive family to encourage personal efforts. School children work hard. Some senior students wake at 5:30am, breakfast, shower, dress and arrive at school at 6:30am for training. Following training, they change, grab another bite to eat and prepare for classes between 8:15am and 3:00pm. At 3:00pm, some students will change again and attend another training or rehearsal session. At 5:00pm, students travel home, shower, change again, have dinner and then start 3 hours of study. This cycle happens many times during the week and it is followed by more school work on weekends. Some adults don’t work this hard. Term 3 is a busy term for our senior students and it is important that parents remove as many Junior School IJGS Page Page 73 Excursions & Special Events Junior School Update obstacles as they can to allow the students to focus on their studies. At the end of the year, it is important that our seniors feel that they gave their studies their very best and consequently that their results are a true indication of their ability. Many educational researchers state that when parents are involved with their children's education, those children do better at school. They concluded that when schools work together with families to support learning, children tend to succeed not just in school, but throughout life. I read the following poem during the holidays that reinforced the importance of the partnership between home and school in shaping our students’ successes and well-being. The author of the poem is unknown. side And polished and smoothed it o'er. And when at last their work was done, They were proud of what they had wrought For the things they had moulded into the child Could neither be sold nor bought. And each agreed he would have failed if he had worked alone, For behind the parent stood the school, And behind the teacher, the home. The staff and I are looking forward to supporting our students as they endeavour to do their very best during the next semester. Dr Peter Britton Principal & CEO A Dream of Two Sculptors I dreamed I stood in a studio And watched two sculptors there, The clay they used was a young child's mind, And they fashioned it with care. One was a teacher - the tools he used Were books and music and art; One a parent with guiding hand, And a gentle, loving heart. Day after day the teacher toiled, With touch that was deft and sure, While the parent laboured by his Middle School Middle School Excursions & Special Events Excursions & Special Events Page Page 32 Senior School Senior School Excursions & & Special Special Events Events Excursions Page Page 23 Head of Junior School’s Message Year 4 News 87 Coordinator’s Message Middle School Message 99 Coordinator’s Message Senior School Message 10 10 Student of the Week Junior School Sport 8 12 Years 7 & 8 Camp Middle School Sport 9 12 Building Work Sport Update Senior School 2 12 Junior Sport Update 8 Form Teachers 9 Assessment Calendar 2 diligence overcomes all omnia superat diligentia ‐ Medical Alert Recently there has been a case of whooping cough (pertussis) in a person associated with our school. Whooping Cough is a highly infectious illness that is spread by coughing and sneezing. The illness is troublesome and distressing at any age but can be very serious in young infants. The Logan & West Moreton Public Health Unit advises that all parents should check their children’s immunisation records and ensure that their child is up to date with their routine childhood vaccinations. If your younger children have missed any of their routine childhood vaccinations they can still be vaccinated against whooping cough with the childhood vaccine up to their Adolescents are 8 th birthday. provided with a free pertussis booster vaccine in Year 10 or at the age of fifteen years from their doctor or local council clinic. A free pertussis vaccine is also currently available for birth parents, adoptive parents and foster parents of children under 6 months of age from their general practitioner. The protection against whooping cough from the vaccine does decrease over time and whooping cough may still occur in older children and adults who were fully immunised in early childhood. Therefore it is important for parents to be aware of the symptoms of whooping cough and to seek medical attention should they be concerned. More information is contained in the Whooping Cough Fact Sheet which is available from the School Office or at the Queensland Health Website: EXCURSIONS, EVENTS & ACTIVITIES 2011 General 28 July Talk & Tour, 9.00am—11.00am KCC Theatre Junior School 3 August Boys Soccer v Clayfield College Middle/Senior School 21 July Cyber-Safety Presentation, 7pm in KCC Theatre 22 July Interhouse Debating—Lunchtime Year 10 Art Excursion Met West Regional Trials—Cricket 22—24 July Year 11 & 12 Geography Excursion 23 July QGSSSA Winter Fixtures v St Aidan’s (Away) 25 July Senior School Parent/Teacher Meetings-3.30pm, Hall Ntball Cluster Day—Vicky Wilson Cup Interhouse Debating Finals—Lunchtime 26-27July Year 12 QCS Practice Test 28 July RACI Chemistry Quiz 28-29 July Year 10 SET Plan Interviews 29 July RSG Practice Competition—Moreton Bay College 30 July IGGS Dance QGSSSA Winter Fixtures v BGGS (Home) Year 12 Hospitality Culinary Competition 1 August Interhouse Theatresports 2 August ICAS English Competition Senior C & 8B Netball v BGGS 3 August Year 11 & 12 Prevoc Maths Excursion From the Canteen Welcome back to Term 3. Mr Stack is a very experienced teacher of Science who has worked in both state and private schools including a lengthy period as Head of Science. Mr Stack will take Mrs Bergmann’s Year 9 and 10 Science classes while Mrs Owen will take Mrs Bergmann’s Year 12 Chemistry class. Tour and Talk – Tell your friends On Thursday 28 July from 9am – 11.00, the School will host a Tour and Talk Morning designed to give parents who are interested in enrolling their child at IGGS or IJGS the opportunity to tour the school and discuss the educational opportunities on offer. If you know anyone who might be interested – a family friend or relative, a neighbour, a work colleague - please let them know. A recommendation by a satisfied parent is invaluable when other parents are making decisions about their child’s education. Chermside Road Pedestrian Crossing Supervision From 25 July, there will be a slight change to times for supervision of crossing at the Chermside Road pedestrian crossing. Our lollipop ladies will be on duty from 7.45 – 8.30 each morning and 2.45 – 3.30 each afternoon. Senior School Parent Teacher Meetings A reminder to parents that Senior School Parent Teacher Meetings will be held on Monday 25 July. This is an excellent opportunity for you to discuss your daughter’s recent report. All parents will have received logon information for PTO (Parent Teacher online) via post or email. Bookings close at 9am on Friday 22 July. Ms Rhonda Nolan Deputy Principal From the Dean of Studies Year 12 QCS Practice Test Results All girls received their QCS Practice results last week. Ask to have a look - perhaps you could go through some of the questions and answers with your daughters. The girls sat for the 2005 and 2006 Short Response Item papers and they have received an electronic copy of the answers and marking criteria for both papers. Even though the girls will be going through some questions and answers in class, they do need to spend some time at home reworking the questions they got wrong. The marking criteria will allow them to check their reworked responses and will give guidance on what should have been included in the initial answer. The girls have also participated in three practice Writing Tasks which have been marked by an outside QCS marker. I was pleased to see the significant improvement in the cohort's results from Writing Task 1 to 2, and again to Writing Task 3. We all know that ‘practice makes perfect’ but the girls do need to understand that the QCS papers have questions that are written in specific ways and they need to practise answering those types of questions. The girls are very willing to attend sport training or music rehearsals to practise their skills before a competition or performance, and they should give the same consideration to practising their skills before Page 3 an academic performance. Next week, on Tuesday 26 and Wednesday 27 July, the girls will be completing their last QCS test practice. This is a 2-day practice and will follow the same timelines as those used for the actual test on Tuesday 30 and Wednesday 31 August 2011. Girls who are not sitting the QCS are still required at school and are able to do work in the library. Currently, I am meeting with the Year 12s and discussing with them their Semester report, their projected OP range and their goals for Semester 2. Learning Accounts As you would already know, each student has a Learning Account opened with Queensland Studies Authority (QSA) by the end of Year 10. In this, is recorded your daughter’s achievements, any competencies completed, and results for extra-curricular activities such as AMEB, Duke of Edinburgh etc. The girls are given their Learner Unique Identifier (LUI) and password. It is then your daughter’s responsibility to check her own account. If she notices that data is missing, she needs to come and speak with me so it can be sorted in a timely fashion before the rush at the end of the Semester. Girls can track their accounts by logging onto the QSA Student Connect site : https://studentconnect.qsa.qld.edu.au/. Girls will be receiving a Provisional Student Statement as part of this process and they are able to check all data contained in their QSA account. Exitlines This is a QSA magazine, published twice a year, to give the Year 12s valuable information about senior studies and options after school. Edition 1 will be handed out this week. Queensland Studies Authority Directive. To be awarded Year 12 Certification, all girls must be in attendance at school up to, and including, Friday 18 November, 2011. Year 10 and Year 8 We have just started Semester 2 and we are planning for 2012 and 2013. It’s that time of the year when the Year 10s are considering their subjects for Years 11 and 12, and the Year 8s are thinking about their course for Year 9. The Year 10 Parent and Student Information night this week will allow you to discuss any queries you have with the Heads of Departments and Teachers in Charge. Your daughters have had their Curriculum Handbook 2012-2013 for six weeks now, so they should have been through the subject offerings and formulated their questions and queries. The Year 8s will receive their Curriculum Handbook 2012 next week so I am sure you will be discussing this at home. Over the next four weeks, the girls will have presentations from the Heads of Departments about the opportunities available in their Key Learning Area. Years 7-12 Assessment dates All girls received their Semester 2 Assessment Calendar last week. This will help the girls plan their study program in the lead up to their assignments and exams. The girls received an electronic copy. Mrs Kathy Bishop Dean of Studies From the Dean of Students Ipswich Girls’ Grammar School continues to be a caring and giving community. I have shared our community service endeavours with you often throughout Semester 1, and Semester 2 will prove to be no different. Already on Saturday night 16 July, a small group of our Yr 11 Grammar Angels assisted Ipswich Hospice with their Trivia Night Fundraiser at Swifts Sports Club. I have also sent out a call for volunteers for Ipswich Hospice’s first Doorknock Appeal taking place on Sunday 21 August. All students in Years 9-12 have been invited to join us on that day for as few or as many hours as possible to help Hospice gain the much needed funds they require to provide the care that they do to the Ipswich community. Please see the information regarding the Doorknock in this bulletin. Another fabulous community service in which our Year 8 students have been invited to participate is the Zonta Birthing Kit Project Day 2011. Based on the knowledge that an estimated 525,000 women die annually in childbirth, many from infections acquired during childbirth, there is a great need for clean birthing kits. The Year 8 students will join many other women, young and old, on Saturday 20 August from 9am – 12 noon, to help pack birthing kits for women in need in Papua New Guinea. The aim this year is to pack and send 8,000 birthing kits. In 2010 the number was 6,000 birthing kits which were sent to Ethiopia. Please prompt your Year 8 daughter to contact Mrs Acutt or Mrs Randall to sign up for this service endeavour. Another Year 8 project that involves giving to others in need is the Shanty Town Sleepover happening on Tuesday night 16 August. Mrs Randall is organising for the Year 8 students to sleep over in the Middle School Courtyard in their own shanty town and to donate money to purchase items for people in the world who are far less supported resourcewise than we are. Through this experience and the money raised for the purchase of goods and services, our Year 8s will be gaining a valuable empathetic perspective. Letters about this event have been sent home. Our Year 12 Grammar Angels began their term with cooking dinner for the homeless on Wednesday 13 July. The girls serve the needy in this way every second Wednesday night in Queen’s Park, assisted by a group of staff from the school. This has been an ongoing community service throughout this year and last, and we thank the IGGS staff who contribute food items and money on a very regular basis so that we can provide this service. At Year 7 level Mrs Randall has another project underway that we are very excited about. On Tuesday 16 August the Year 7 students will be selling cupcakes to raise money for PAWS (RSPCA) and collecting items such as food, collars and toys to donate to the Ipswich Animal Shelter. Isn’t it wonderful that our girls, our own Grammar Angels, are giving so much to support others either in their local communities or beyond. The work that we are plunging into with Positive Psychology, which will be evident in the Term 4 Life Skills programs, is based on the premise of serving a greater good. The Dalai Lama, who I was fortunate enough to see on his recent visit, speaks often of kindheartedness. This is exactly the trait we are building on here at Ipswich Girls’ Grammar school when we provide our girls with opportunities to help and be kind to others. He also says, “My religion is very simple. My religion is kindness.” Build a sense of Community…..in your School Many local schools feel strongly about supporting the Ipswich community and charitable organisations that need help to continue their important work. We hope you do too. Ipswich Hospice Care provides high quality palliative care for terminally ill people and support services to help families cope with grief and loss. Less than a third of our funding comes from Government, the remainder must be raised through donations...which is why we need your help. Ipswich Girls’ Grammar School students will be collecting from 10am on Sunday 21 August. If your daughter is in Year 9—Year 12 and is able to assist, please have her contact me or please phone me on 3454 4466 or email [email protected] on your daughter’s behalf. This process worked well for us. It enabled us to lengthen the turn-around time between editing and distributing the reports which usually takes 2 days and 7 staff to accomplish. As this is the first time we have used this system, I would be interested in any feedback which might improve the process. Review & Revise Time End of semester reports are a good time for students to take the time to review how they have progressed so far this year. It is important that they read the reports carefully and ascertain the areas in which they have done well and those areas in which they need to improve. 20 July 2011 Students of the Week Week 9 Serena Duncan 1A Caitlin Yates 1B Evangeline Behan-Howell 2A Elise Pratt 2B Laura Cullen 3A Dahniella Pedroni 3B Chloe Salih 4A Ruby Peut 4B Nancy Phung 5A Prudence Beer 6A Celine Foo 6B Taylah Moore 6C Week 10 David Araba 1B Sylvie Dionysisus 1/2C Georgina Walker 2A Ashleigh Stafford 3A Louisa Bernoth-Doolan 3B Zoe Armitage 4B Mrs Karen McArdle Head of Junior School For areas in which they have done well, it is important that they identify the strategies they used to achieve the pleasing results so they can continue to use these and even improve on initial results. Parents can help children identify these by making a list of the strategies children believe they used to achieve the pleasing results. Some might be: Really listening well in class Asking questions when I didn’t understand Participating in discussions Studying well before the test Having Mum or Dad ask questions Does your child suffer asthma or eczema? For areas in which they feel they need to improve, it is important to read the teacher’s comments and advice as a starting point. Children too, can often identify what they need to do. Positive Parenting for Healthy Living is an adaptation of the successful Triple P - Positive Parenting Program, offering practical ideas and support for parents of children suffering asthma or eczema. This innovative group program is designed to help parents manage their child’s illness, assist children in coping with their illness and emotions, and prevent and manage difficult child behaviour. This can be a good point to start setting a few goals for improvement. Parents need to be mentors/coaches in this process. In being the mentor/coach, it is important that you are not the doer of the goal. In other words, do not take over and do the task for your child. You need to guide, motivate and build confidence in your child. Taking over will deny your child the sense of satisfaction of doing it for themselves and the sense of achievement they get when they have worked hard for it. If you are unclear on how to help your child to improve, your child’s teacher would be more than happy to help. Page 7 Every day thousands of Australian children suffer the effects of asthma and eczema, and families struggle with illness management and children’s behavioural and emotional adjustment. Over the next few months and for a limited time only, parents of 3-10 year old children suffering asthma or eczema are able to access Positive Parenting for Healthy Living Triple P free of charge as part of a University of Queensland research project. Year 4 Camp On Thursday 9 June, Year 4 set off for a two day camp at Thunderbird Park, at Tamborine Mountain. The aim of the camp was to enable our year level to get to know each other in a different setting, and to prepare for our current Science unit ‘Changes to the Earth’s Surface.’ We set off to fossick for treasures in the world’s largest thunderegg mine. Our afternoon of fossicking included an informative explanation on thundereggs and how to find them, a mine safety talk, as well as how to properly use a pick and bucket when searching for these 200 million year old eggs. A sense of true camaraderie was displayed throughout the camp as the girls supported and encouraged each other in activities such as ‘The Mud Course Mission’ and ‘Bush Survival’. After our big night of trivia and group activities, we enjoyed trying our hand at archery and a relaxing round of putt-putt. Evangeline’s entry has been selected to represent Ipswich in the overall Queensland Fire Poster Competition, and we wish her every future success. Ms Nicole Williams, Ms Giselle Walker and Ms Rebecca Mooney. Year 4 Teachers Minute to Win It – IJGS Science Expo The Year 3’s were very excited when both their classrooms were opened up and transformed into a “Minute to Win it” studio for the Science Expo. Much preparation and research had gone into the exciting and fun-filled challenges that they had planned for the day. The 8 challenge stations were run by the Year 3 students and they also created colourful posters to illustrate the scientific slant of their challenge. Parents, teachers and students were given a minute to complete their challenge and were rewarded with lollies and stickers if they were successful. Lots of fun, laughter, learning and fierce competition was had by all, as the Year 3 classrooms buzzed with excitement and fun. Although temperatures were chilly, the students took these adverse weather conditions in their stride and it was a pleasure to witness the cheery way in which they accepted this very real change of environment. Fire Safety Poster Award Presentation As mentioned in the last bulletin, Year 4 students participated in the annual Fire Poster Competition to communicate the importance of fire safety. Judging was conducted by a panel from the Ipswich Lions Club and Queensland Fire Brigade Services. Six IJGS students were invited to attend the awards presentation that was held at the Ipswich Fire Station during the July holidays. The students were presented their awards by the Assistant Commissioner of the Queensland Fire and Rescue Service, Mr Peter Beauchamp and Counsellor Antonelli of Ipswich City Council. Those presented were: Evangeline Sturges (first place winner for Ipswich District) Sameen Arshad Kaede Wright Jennifer Cosford Caitlin Stephenson Lucy Bond From our overwhelming results, IJGS was awarded the shield for being the winners of Ipswich district. Congratulations to all the students who participated in the competition. Page 8 Year 3 camp is coming up very soon and the students and teachers will be travelling to Camp Warrawee at North Pine in the second last week of this term. Details will be sent out shortly. At our meetings, we catch up on local events and seminars as wells as do a range of activities which encourage confidence and the ability to make good decisions. The Ipswich Youth Advisory Council is a way of meeting people and learning what you can do to help the rights of the community. Sarai Cook, Hannah Flanderka, Kelsey Adcock and Brooke Stjepcevic. Youth Advisory Group – YAG IGGS has it’s very own Youth Advisory Group on Cybersafety. One student representative from each Form Class in Years 8 & 9 is a member of YAG. YAG is a national organisation made up of some 1300 students who will assist the Government with cybersafety policy development and to test the effectiveness of government programs. Year 9 – Camp 2011 The Year 9 Camp for 2011 will be held on the last three days of Term 3 from 14 -16 September. The theme of the camp is “Challenge by Choice” and students received information and permission forms for the camp in their Life Skills lesson in week 1. The forms are due back by Friday, 29 July, 2011. The camp will be run by Edmund Park Adventure Centre and based at Camp Laurence at Lake Moogerah. The Program is designed with at least three levels of challenge to enable the students to set their own, appropriate but significant personal goals and physical challenges. The choice of program will be facilitated through the Life Skills lessons at School. The students will also have an opportunity during their weekly Life Skills lessons this term to hone their skills at putting up a tent, lighting and cooking on a trangia, packing a backpack, basic first aid, map reading and using compass bearings. There is much opportunity during this program for personal growth and the development of leadership skills. Ipswich Youth Advisory Council (IYAC) Update IGGS has seven students from Year 8 & 9 who are active members of IYAC. Thank you to our Year 8 IYAC members who recently provided an overview to the Middle School Assembly of what they do as members of this group and a brief outline of their report is included below. In the Youth Advisory Council there are about 15-20 students from Years 8-12 from a range of schools in the Ipswich area. There is a designated Youth Council Worker who informs us about upcoming events and how each member can contribute. Our main job is to actively support the growth in Ipswich. We are given a voice in local government decision making, identify issues that affect young people and provide support/advice to develop responsive strategies. Page 9 At the end of Term 2, students in Middle School were anonymously surveyed about their personal internet usage with particular emphasis on the use of personal networking sites like Facebook. The IGGS YAG group will review the survey results to help them understand the needs and concerns of our Middle School students. This important information will assist the YAG members when they are invited to logon and communicate through a secure y@gOnline site during the week of 18-22 July, 2011. The members will be able to contribute their ideas and to discuss cybersafety issues with other schools located in Queensland. During this week, Mr Brett Lee a well known Internet Safety Expert will be conducting informative sessions with the students at IGGS as well as facilitating a parent presentation on the evening of Thursday 21 July. This is an event not to miss if you would like to stay informed about how to use the internet safely. Year 8 Subject Selection Year 8 students will begin a program during their Life Skills lessons this term where they learn about the subjects and pathways which are available to them in Year 9, 2012. A series of presentations from Heads of Departments for a range of subjects will occur as well as informative sessions about the process from the Dean of Studies, Mrs Kathy Bishop. There will be a parent information evening on Thursday 4 August, and more details will be provided closer to the date. I would encourage any students or parents who have particular queries about their daughter’s study/career path to contact our Career Guidance Counsellor, Mrs Natalie Twine in the interim. Senior School Coordinator: Mrs Anna Owen TERM 3 Week 2 [email protected] 20 July 2011 Community Service in Action At IGGS we are dedicated to an all round education for your daughter and participation in community is one way in which we can help her to do that. Of course, working hard at her school work, playing sport, taking part in music programs, cultural endeavours and the like are the other ways in which she can connect to school, create her own sense of belonging and work towards a greater good. Through the IGGS Community Service program, based on the aims of the Australian Community Service program, we offer several opportunities for students to serve their community. Students are recognised for their contributions by a School Service Pocket. Some of the aims of the Australian Community Service program are to create a socially inclusive society in which all Australian people feel valued and have opportunities to fully participate in community life; create social cohesion, facilitating networks to engender a sense of belonging; to embody active citizenship and community participation and to respond to the needs of disadvantaged Australians and Communities. The Ipswich Hospital Foundation relies on support from the Ipswich Community. Each year our school participates in one of the IHF major fundraising events, the Ipswich Park2Park. We are looking for interested students and family members to get involved by assisting at the IGGS Water Station or running in the 5km, 10km or Half Marathon. Please contact me (Anna Owen) or access Park2Park online registration. Our Team name is IGGS (and password is also IGGS) for cheaper registration online. Ms Dale Spinks Acting Head of Secondary Sport Cross Country Review The school is currently undergoing a review of Cross Country, to plan for improvements for in the future. All parents of Cross Country runners have been emailed over the holidays asking for their input. It has been asked that all responses be emailed to the school by this Friday, 15 July. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the parents who responded to the swimming review that was conducted earlier this year. This review has been completed and we are now in the process of deciding which proposals can be implemented in the near future. Mrs Chris Gado Head of Sport Page 12 Netball The Netball season is underway with the first round of games being played last Saturday. Girls have begun the term well with almost 100% attendance at trainings and they must remember that 90% attendance is required to receive a pocket. All players should have received a Netball booklet and I encourage them and their parents to read the information contained in this document. Parents are very welcome at all games and I encourage you to become involved in your daughter’s team by offering to be the scorer at least at one game during the season. There has been a change in arrangements for the Senior C and 8C teams which were due to play BGGS last Saturday. As BGGS were still on holidays at this time, these games will now be played on Tuesday afternoon, 2 August at the Downey Park Netball Association, Northey Street, Windsor. Parents are very welcome to attend these games; however, players are encouraged to take the bus provided to the venue so that we all leave school at 3.00 pm together. Girls are most welcome to return home with their parents. On June 7 last term, our Senior A team (and a couple of recruited Open team members) played a friendly match against a visiting New Zealand schoolgirl team from Woodford House, Havelock North. We were led to believe that they were an emerging Netball school and would not be much competition for our Open team. They were very well matched against the Senior A team and the girls played a long and hard game. Their sportsmanship and competitive spirit was much appreciated and was a good introduction for our Senior A team for the impending QGSSSA season. I thank the girls for their friendly participation in this match.
