“Hearts” Pumps up Fundraising Fervor
After a one-year hiatus, “Hearts of All Ages,” the much-loved Valentine’s Day fundraiser,
returned last week to its familiar home at the Wings over the Rockies Air and Space Museum
in the Lowry neighborhood.
The storied event, which debuted in 2008, was the brainchild of Pete Coors, then chairman of
the University of Colorado Hospital Foundation Board of Directors. Coors envisioned “Hearts”
as a Valentine’s Day event for the entire family, featuring games, kid-friendly food, music,
dancing and auction items.
Funk band Tunisia provided the
evening’s musical soundtrack.
The event each year benefits a clinical department; this year, the beneficiary was Orthopedics.
Donors purchased 100 tables for the Friday evening shindig, and nearly 1,000 people
attended. Highlights of the night included an auction for a golden-doodle puppy, which went
to UCHealth Process Improvement Director Derek Birznieks for a mere $3,000. Reports are
that Birznieks is reviewing his home-finance workflows in the wake of the purchase.
Process Improvement Director Derek Birznieks,
with his wife and daughter, shows golden-doodle
puppy Pumpkin that he won in silent auction.
On a note that disappointed many, the
legendary band “Big Bang,” which had rocked
every previous “Hearts of All Ages” event
before this one, was a no-show this year. By
all accounts, funkmeisters “Tunisia” filled in
admirably. Becky Ditchfield Murray of 9News
served as emcee, replacing the silky-smooth
weather prognosticator Ed Greene.
