2009: Environmental Achievements–Block
After moving into a state-of-the-art, energy efficient
Boxley has become the source for area builders who seek high-
manufacturing facility in 2006, Boxley turned its focus to
quality, sustainable building products that qualify for LEED
innovating products to meet customers’ needs for sustainable
credits. Boxley sells the widest range of LEED-eligible building
building materials. Boxley focused on three specific areas for
products and produces the following ones:
sustainability:

2. Enhance energy efficiency
Utilize high efficiency kilns that reduce the use of
electricity and natural gas in the block manufacturing
process.

2009: Environmental Achievements–Concrete
As part of its commitment to implement sustainable business practices, all eight Boxley Concrete Plants throughout Virginia and
West Virginia achieved Green-Star Certification by the National Ready Mixed Concrete Association (NRMCA) in 2009.
Boxley’s Roanoke plant was the first to achieve GreenStar status in Virginia and the 11th in the U.S. Boxley’s

NRMCA Green Star Certification
Following are just a few of the actions Boxley concrete plants
implemented during the Green Star certification, which
encompasses both machinery and processes.
t Reduced waste concrete by 20% by forming concrete

tons of waste concrete out of local landfills.
t Utilized 100% recycled water for mixer drum rinse
and washout. This saved 6.4 million gallons of water
annually.
t Improved site aesthetics through tree plantings
and landscaping.
Additionally, two of our employees, Sam Woolwine
and Tracy Russell achieved the NRMCA Concrete
Sustainability Professional Specialist Certification as a
result of their knowledge of sustainable development
and green building practices.

Building Green with Boxley Innovations for Sustainable Building and Living
Boxley is leading the way in developing innovative, environmentally friendly building products. The Leadership in Energy and
Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System, developed by the U.S. Green Building Council, provides a set
of standards for environmentally sustainable construction. As a material producer and distributor of LEED intended products
we facilitate all six main areas of focus for LEED; site sustainability, water use, energy efficiency, responsible materials, indoor
environmental quality and innovative design.

environmental protection and reclamation. Last year, more
than 800 students participated in this program.
In 2009, Boxley became the primary sponsor of the
Schools for Pools program to increase awareness of the
need for wetlands protection, particularly vernal pools, by
connecting with kindergarten through 12th-grade students
and their teachers from four regional school districts in the
Lynchburg-Amherst area.
