School Supplies... Changing lives On behalf of the teachers and students who benefit from this Center, THANK YOU to all our supporters! Changing lives A letter from the Executive Director and Chair, Board of Trustees Dear Supporters, The 2013-2014 school year brought about significant change and growth for the Cleveland Kids in Need and prompted us to share our story in this, our first “Report to the Community: School Supplies…Changing Lives”. When the Center opened in late 2001, we served 25 schools in the Cleveland Metropolitan School District - a small number of the schools where nearly every child qualified for the free or reduced lunch program. Over the years, we expanded the number of schools we support to include the entire Cleveland Metropolitan and East Cleveland school districts, as well as eligible parochial and nonprofit charter schools also serving these communities. But in the 2013-2014 school year, through generous donations of money, classroom supplies, and volunteer hours we have been able to address the disturbing fact that 50% of schoolchildren in Cuyahoga County qualify for free or reduced lunch and they don't live solely in Cleveland or East Cleveland. This year, we have been able to: • Expand our support to 240 schools in 11 school districts with the potential to support about 100,000 schoolchildren in need. • Receive for distribution $1.6 million in school and classroom supplies and more than 500,000 books. • Collaborate with First Book to distribute 500,000 books throughout the country with 287,000 given to Northeast Ohio children. • Hire a part-time Warehouse Manager and part-time Development Director to build the Center’s capacity. Our goal for the upcoming years is to continually strengthen our capacity to serve as many schoolchildren as possible. Our focus now is on increasing the number of teachers within each eligible school that use the Center. We will also work tirelessly to raise awareness of the needs of schoolchildren throughout the Northeast Ohio region and inform the community of how they can help. We know it will be a challenge, but every year we face this challenge with the enthusiasm of a child with a full backpack on the first day of school! In some schools, the number is 100% of schoolchildren. These children live in households where basic needs are often unmet, and equipping a child with the supplies they need for school just isn't possible. Cleveland Kids in Need Resource Center opened in November 2001. Our goal is simple, to ensure that every child is prepared to learn and succeed by providing free school supplies to teachers of the students who are most in need. We do this because we believe: County come to lchildren in Cuyahoga Fifty percent of schoo to learn ed ed ne plies school lacking basic sup A S pecial Recognition Cleveland Kids in Need Resource Center was overwhelmed to learn that Joe Thomas of the Cleveland Browns not only wished to make a donation, but also bring some of his teammates To ensure that every child is prepared to learn and succeed by providing free school supplies to Cuyahoga County students most in need. to the Center to help teachers shop for supplies! Since that first visit, Joe and his wife Annie have been faithful supporters of our Center and our mission. Thanks Joe and Annie! Our Impact When we opened our doors, we served 25 schools in the Cleveland Metropolitan School District. From our 15,000 sq. ft. facility and with the generous support of our donors and funders, we've been able to grow to meet the needs of more schools and districts where 65% or more schoolchildren qualify for free or reduced lunch. In 2013-2014, we expanded support to eligible schools in Bedford, Cleveland Heights-University Heights, Euclid, Garfield Heights, Lakewood, Maple Heights, Richmond Heights, South Euclid, and 2001: Warrensville Heights. We now serve over 240 25 Schools schools in Cuyahoga County and have the potential 10,000 Students to impact over 100,000 schoolchildren with core supplies, art supplies and books. 2,800 Teacher Visits In the 2013-2014 school year, teachers made over 2,800 visits to the Center to get free basic supplies, art supplies, incentives, uniforms and books for their students. The Center received for distribution over $1.6 Million in supplies and gives them to teachers for their students, one shopping cart at a time. We receive our supplies from a variety of sources ranging from national manufacturers and retailers to local companies. Our financial donors are essential to our ability to transport, receive, sort, assemble, store, shelve and distribute the donated supplies. Our Donors Our Center would not be able to exist and impact the lives of so many low-income schoolchildren without the support of many. We receive in-kind donations from both national and local companies and financial support from foundations, companies, and individuals. We also held our first Summer Reading Book Distribution, welcoming 285 eligible teachers to our Center to select 2 to 4 books per child to give to their students to take home for the summer. These treasures will enable low-income students, who typically have no books in the home, to start their own home libraries, facilitate summer reading, and develop a love of reading. Changing lives Our Partners Our Center is able to acquire, transport, warehouse and distribute $1.6 Million in supplies each year due to the generous donations of time, money, and products of individuals, corporations, and private foundations. With a small staff of four, we rely entirely on the volunteer efforts of so many. From faithful individuals to corporate departments to civic groups, over 3,184 volunteer hours have helped make this school year a success. So how do we work? Our Method The Cleveland Kids in Need Resource Center is a local, independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Our Center is one of 32 centers nationwide that are affiliated with the Kids in Need Foundation, located in Dayton, Ohio. Through this affiliation, our Center is able to share in nationwide donations of classroom supplies from companies like Dixon Ticonderoga, Elmers, 3M, and Target. The Center is responsible for the cost of transporting these donations to Cleveland from around the country and warehousing them until distribution. We also regularly receive generous product donations from local companies like Silverman’s, Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores, ShurTech Brands, and Darice. Individuals, groups, and local companies show their generosity by hosting supply drives throughout the year and bringing those supplies to the center. For eight years in a row, the Greater Cleveland community has shown their support for our mission and for schoolchildren in need by participating in the Fox 8 Stuff the Bus supply drive, donating thousands of dollars in classroom supplies in just one day! The combined donation from these three sources amounted to $1.6 Million in classroom supplies to distribute this school year. The monetary donations we receive from foundations, companies, groups and individuals are our only sources of the funds needed each year to operate the program; transport and warehouse supplies; manage volunteers and coordinate teacher shopping visits. Fox 8 has helped us raise awareness in Northeast Ohio about the need that schoolchildren throughout Cuyahoga County have for school supplies every year. An estimated $8,000 to $10,000 worth of school supplies are collected in each bus; this year’s campaign stuffed 12.5 buses! The outpouring of support from individuals and local companies is an outstanding example of community engagement on a regional scale. Thank you Fox 8! Classroom teachers are allowed to shop twice per school year, filling a shopping cart with classroom supplies, crafts and incentives, and class sets of books for free. On average, each teacher visit is worth $535 of items that often teachers would otherwise purchase themselves to ensure that their students are equipped with the tools they need to learn.
