Highland Creek • Charlotte, NC race & fun Run Classes are held Wednesdays, 6-7 pm and Saturdays 9-10 am at the Highland Creek Sports Club. Cost is $5 per class. Of course, estate planning can seem like a daunting task. But you’ll find it easier to handle if you break it down into three key areas: distributing your assets, protecting your family and reducing estate taxes. Let’s look at these topics: ■■ Distributing your assets. Obviously, it’s essential that you let your family know just how you’d like to see your assets distributed, and to whom. At the very least, you’ll need to draw up a will. If you were to die without one, the state could end up distributing your resources, and it might do so in a way you wouldn’t have wanted. But even a will may not be sufficient. Many people design a living trust, which provides them with more flexibility in distributing assets, for example, you could direct your living trust to disperse assets to children or grandchildren at specific ages - and allows assets to be distributed without going through the time-consuming, and public, probate process. ■■ Protecting your family. Estate planning isn’t just about dollars and cents - it also involves taking the necessary steps to preserve the welfare of your family if you are not around or become incapacitated. Consequently, you’ll need to name a guardian for your minor children - someone who can step in and raise them should anything happen to you and your spouse. And when your children are adults, you’ll want to help them with decisions that could prove agonizing. Fore example, by creating a living will, you can state whether you want your life prolonged if you ever face a terminal illness or catastrophic brain injury and are no longer able to make decisions for yourself. And by drawing up a health care power of attorney, you can name someone to make health care choices for you if you are unable to do so. ■■ Reducing estate taxes. Depending on the size of your estate, your heirs may never have to worry about estate taxes. But that’s hard to predict, especially given the fact that federal estate laws have gone through several changes in recent years, and may do so again. Your best bet is to stay informed about the exemption level - the amount you can pass on to your heirs, free of estate taxes - and look for ways to reduce the size of your taxable estate. You could, for instance, make charitable gifts, thus moving these assets from your estate. You may also want to consider arrangements such as an irrevocable life insurance trust under which you can transfer a life insurance policy out of your estate and have the trust distribute the proceeds to the beneficiaries you’ve chosen - or a credit shelter trust, which allows both your and your spouse to take full advantage of both your estate tax exemptions. Join your neighbors for an afternoon of tennis with a Highland Creek Pro. There will be warm ups, drills, and round robin play. Tennis socials will be held beginning April 9th, 3-5pm at Prosperity Park tennis courts. Cost is $15 per couple/$8 Individual. To register/questions: email bridget@ phpoolmanagement.com or call 704-766-0052. Strength training, cardiovascular, core and flexibility. All ages and levels! Cost is $10.00 per class. * All classes are held outside, so please make sure to dress appropriately for the weather* When people hear the words “estate planning,” they often assume it’s an activity only for retirees or near-retirees. But if you have a family, it’s never too soon to create your estate plan. Want to Meet People that Play Tennis? race & fun Run 2nd Annual THREE KEYS TO ESTATE PLANNING SPORTS 2011 COUPLES GOLF Come join us every Friday at 5:30 p.m. at the Highland Creek Golf Club for a fun and relaxed evening of TGIF golf. This activity is all about socializing with other couples that share your passion for playing non-competitive golf. Each week brings a new and different format that will have you laughing and making new friends. It’s the perfect way to kick off the weekend. Couples Golf will begin on April 29 and wrap up in September. If you’re new to Couples Golf, register with the Golf Clubhouse to get on the E-mail list and start receiving weekly updates. The Swim Assessment @ NOMAD is for new HC swimmers and Junior swimmers wanting to move-up to Senior team. To be eligible for Senior team, your swimmer needs to complete two lengths of the 25 yd. pool unassisted. If you swam Senior team previously, you do not need to attend. March 19, 2011 9 am 5k Start 10 am kids mile fun run Parents Information Night A trust can be a complex instrument, so before establishing one, you’ll need to consult with your tax and legal advisors. In fact, you’ll want to consult with them on all aspects of estate planning. It will take time and effort, but it’s worth it to leave the type of legacy you desire. Financial advisors are not estate planners and cannot provide tax or legal advice. Please consult your attorney or qualified tax advisor regarding your situation. Arts & Crafts Fair November started off with Highland Creek’s very first Arts & Crafts Fair which was held in the community room of The Haven. Seventeen vendors selling hand-made originals ranged from unique jewelry, hand-stitched items for adults, children and babies, retroaprons, ornaments, boutique hair bows, etc. Thank you to the following residents who participated in the fair: Jane Ardis (Otis + Beebs), Gloria Berry, Denis Coruzzi (Beauty in Nature), Marion Czipo, Betty Dale, Tatiana Garcia, Nelson & Yvonne Maynard, Dre’ Meadows (DV8), Karen Michelussi, Jennifer Nicely, Elizabeth Sanders (Libby’s Bow Boutique), Nancy Seidl (Posh Pinafores), Sabrina Sinclair, Gertrude Tucker, Teresa Voll, Christa Weiss, and Alyse Williams. Adult Bingo Once again Players Grille was standing room only for Adult Bingo! Over 100 residents came out for free appetizers and great prizes. Over 20 rounds of bingo was played for a variety of prizes including the grand prize of a $100 gift card. Congratulations to Deanna Chillemi who won the grand prize during a “black out” round of bingo. Thank you to Players Grille and Highland Creek Golf Club for donating great prizes such as rounds of golf and dinners at the grille! We will have adult bingo four times in 2011, so watch your newsletters. Please note that because this activity has become so popular and we are limited on space, going forward Adult Bingo is for Highland Creek residents only. All residents must show their Highland Creek badge to purchase cards. Cookie Exchange A group of Highland Creek kids got together to exchange their own cookie creations. From gingerbread men to candy can truffles, the kids filled their tins and ate more than they took home! Before the exchange, they played musical chairs and bingo. Each child went home with a prize. Holiday Coloring Contest Winners Holiday Tree Lighting The second annual Holiday Tree Lighting brought a HUGE crowd to the Sports Club. The Highland Creek Elementary School Chorus of over 70 kids performed traditional Holiday Carrols. After the chorus sang, families hung special decorations they brought from home on the Sports Club tree. The activities team handed out ornaments as well. Hot cocoa and cookies brought the evening together. At the end of the event, the tree was lit by the countdown of families shouting ten, nine, eight…three, two, one! Many families stayed around to take photos around the tree. A special thank you to Pam, Con-ning, Kira, Taylor, Justin and Marion, our wonderful activities team for the evening. Olivia G. - 4 yrs. old Brooks T. - 6 yrs. old Katelynn R. - 8 yrs. old Zachary B. - 9 yrs. old Visit with Santa Ho, Ho, Ho…the next morning Santa braved the sleet and snow to come to Highland Creek! Hundreds of children dressed in their finest or fun pajamas to meet Santa himself! They brought their lists, sat on Santa’s lap and whispered in his ear. Mom, Dad, Grandma and Grandpa were there to take lots of pictures. Santa’s train was outside giving rides, if you didn’t mind the weather. The face-painting elf did an amazing job of painting reindeer, snowflakes and Santa himself on the chilly cheeks of boys and girls. Another one of Santa’s elves created fun balloon animals and swords. Before Santa left for the North Pole he drew the winner of the gingerbread house…Congratulations Mumford Family! Exciting changes are in the works for the 2011 Outdoor Decorating Contest. Stay tuned to future newsletter articles for details. The contest was once again sponsored by your neighbors & fellow Highland Creek residents Consuelo Souders, Keller Williams Realty, Brian Souders, Covenant Mortgage and Michelle & Terry O’Connor, O’Connor Insurance Associates. ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL YEAR FOR THE TOYS FOR TOTS TOY DRIVE! Sponsored by: Consuelo Souders, Keller Williams Realty Once again, thanks to the efforts of all those involved, many area disadvantaged children were able to have a wonderful Christmas. The 5th Annual Toys for Tots Toy Drive sponsored by Consuelo Souders with Keller Williams Realty kicked off on Monday, November 22, 2010 with collection bins at Cox Mill Elementary School. Cox Mill families donated toys to those less fortunate during the drive which ran through Friday December 3, 2010. The Toy Drive culminated at the Annual Visit with Santa sponsored by the Highland Creek Activities Committee on Saturday, December 4, 2010. Throughout the event, and despite a cold, blustery day, many families dropped off new, unwrapped toys in the collection bins and had their pictures taken with members from the U.S. Marine Corps. One young Highland Creek resident made a special effort to help those in need. Six year old Reid Maxwell raised money by calling family and friends for donations. In addition, he gave all of the money out of his piggy bank for the cause. His parents agreed to match him dollarfor-dollar. Reid raised a total of $86 which he then used to hand-pick toys purchased at a local store. Reid is pictured below making his sizable donation to the Toys for Tots Toy Drive. Fantastic job Reid! Consuelo Souders with Keller Williams Realty thanks everyone for their kind and generous support of this very worthy cause. We anticipate the joy of watching our children learn to ski for the first time, and with six resorts so easily accessible to the Charlotte area, we’re ready to go. But before you make your way to the slopes, whether you’re an experienced skier or a beginner, it is important to seriously consider safety. Skiing and snowboarding are high-risks activities, and nothing can end a fun family outing faster than a trip to the emergency room. With that in mind, here are some safety tips compiled by High Altitude 2 U (www.highaltitude2u.com) based on conversations with instructors, ski patrollers, and management from several ski resorts: ■■ Obey the rules. Each ski resort is different, and you should familiarize yourself with their rules before you hit the slopes. Obey posted warning and trail closure signs, and never go offtrail. ■■ Know your abilities and limitations. Trails are marked according to their level of difficulty. You should not ski on trails that are above your skill level. If your child is taking a ski lesson at the resort, he or she may receive a patch to wear to identify to patrollers what trails your child should be on. ■■ Sign up for ski lessons. Often, experienced skiers who attempt to teach their beginner friends how to ski teach them just enough to make them dangerous to themselves or others. Let the instructors at the resort give proper instruction to beginners. www.highlandcreek.com ■■ ■■ Wear a helmet. Although helmets are optional, they are highly recommended to help prevent serious head injuries such as concussions. High-profile, ski-related deaths, such as those of actress Natasha Richardson, Sonny Bono, and Michael Kennedy, have brought awareness to the need for helmet use while skiing or snowboarding. Wear wrist guards when snowboarding. Wrist injuries are the most common type of injuries among snowboarders, and wrist guards should be considered standard equipment. Safety isn’t a concern for only skiers and snowboarders. Every year, thousands are injured while enjoying a variety of downhill, snowrelated activities, including sledding, snow tubing, and tobogganing. The American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (www.aaos.org) issued a position statement regarding winter sports safety and helmet use that encourages participants to wear helmets and follow safety precautions. In 2009, the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System of the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission reported that 353,346 injuries were treated related to these winter activities, and the costs related to these injuries, including medical bills and lost wages, were more than $9.28 billion. So if you want to look back on your family’s winter sports activities with fond memories, we encourage you to follow the recommended safety guidelines----and have fun! Highland Creek News...February 2011 24 LANDSCAPING… by Brad Vice Happy New Year to all the Residents of Highland Creek! Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Brad Vice of Carolina Land Consultants and I am the new Landscape Consultant for Highland Creek. In September, the HOA Board in conjunction with the Landscape Committee provided me the opportunity to take over the management of the grounds maintenance, irrigation and lighting services, arboriculture, and landscape enhancements for your community. I have over 14 years of involvement with the Highland Creek community so it is thrilling for me to once again be associated with such a prestigious property. Since mid September, we have been extremely busy charting a new course for the community’s green areas. You may have noticed a number of very aggressive projects taking place during the late fall and into the winter months. Our initial goal was to have the existing vendor complete the work they were contracted and paid to do. Much of the plant material throughout the community was overgrown so we had our Vendor complete a major rejuvenation pruning. Although it is unsightly in some cases, it was necessary for us to start getting the plant material to a point where we can more effectively manage it with better and sound horticultural practices. You may have also noticed some fairly aggressive tree pruning and a lot of tree removals. We asked our vendor to prune the trees along all city streets and neighborhood entries to elevate crown and branching structure to the point where large vehicles would continue to strike the trees. We also took a stance of safety first and removed any tree blocking or growing into street lights. We ended up removing over 86 trees and pruned hundreds more. Believe me when I tell you that we do not like to remove trees, but given the alternative of constant and expensive pruning and the knowledge that one day most of the trees would have to be removed, it was decided to take a more forward thinking stance at this time and start planning for the future. You will see in the early months of 2011 that we will be planting a number of new trees, properly spaced and better species that will grow between the lights. Board to hire Providence Landscape Group as the new grounds maintenance vendor and Myers Irrigation to handle our lighting and irrigation service. Both companies began January 1, 2011. During our initial inspection and through subsequent meetings and feedback, we have identified over 100 potential projects for the community over the next 3-5 years that will greatly enhance the aesthetics of Highland Creek. They include new plantings, tree relocations and additions, neighborhood entry redesigns, tree care and pruning, irrigation modifications and lighting with new and innovative power saving fixtures. Both the landscape committee and I are extremely excited about the new direction for Highland Creek. Moving forward, the community will be professionally managed with support and oversight by residents on the Board and Committee. HUNTERSVILLE FIRE STATION NO.3 Huntersville Fire Station on Eastfield Road opened its doors at the end of October. It will operates 24/7 day and night. The service calls are for the residents of Huntersville north of Eastfield Road and within a 5 mile radius; however, all fire departments have mutual aid agreements whereas Huntersville will assist Charlotte Fire Department, if called. The new fire station includes three (3) bays, offices for fire department officers, a satellite police office, day and dining rooms, exercise room and sleeping quarters. The proposed fire station allows the town to meet a critical fire service need at a rapidly growing part of the town’s jurisdiction (southeastern). Fire service is currently provided via joint use agreements with fire departments Mallard Creek Volunteer Fire Department in Charlotte and Odell Volunteer Fire Department in neighboring Cabarrus County. Our next major challenge involved a new scope of work and contract for all our of landscape services. The landscape committee and I started with 10 potential companies large enough to maintain our property and whittled it down to 8 that were invited to participate in a request for information exercise. That list was then narrowed to 6 that were actually invited to participate in the pricing along with 2 small independent irrigation companies. A select subcommittee of residents was chosen to work with me to review the scope of work, contract and specifications. We ended up with a 65 page document that now well covers our needs. Three finalists were selected to interview with the subcommittee and a decision was presented to the 25 Highland Creek News...February 2011 www.highlandcreek.com www.highlandcreek.com Highland Creek News...February 2011 26 REVISED GUIDELINES FOR CLUBHOUSE RENTALS LUMINARY UPDATE...by Aurora Ormsby Clubhouse reservations are handled by the staff at the Sports Club. CARD PLAYERS DONATE GENEROUSLY TO MILITARY FAMILY & REFUGEES www.CharlotteMusicSchool.com | 704-295-7676 Members of the Highland Creek Spades Club, avid card players who live in various villages throughout Highland Creek, have been quietly doing “good works” for many years. Whenever a need comes to their attention, they pull together their resources to shop for and provide money to meet those needs. This Holiday season, the Club “adopted” a local family of a recentlyenlisted soldier, providing food, gift cards, and presents for his wife, toddler son, and newborn daughter. In addition, they bought over 35 brand new pillows to donate to the refugee families that Marci Mroz (ncmroz59@ gmail.com) works with here in Charlotte. Most refugees have never owned a fresh, new pillow; many were given hand-me-downs when they were first resettled here, so receiving new pillows was a very special treat. As the New Year begins, let us offer some community reminders. We feel that it is important to repeat some of these for the benefit of our newer residents. Architectural Approval Requests As spring approaches, many of you will plan home and landscaping improvements. Please be sure to submit an Architectural Approval Form to Hawthorne Management Company prior to beginning any modification of the exterior of your home. If you plan to install a fence, first read the Fence Design Guidelines and then submit a Request for Fencing Architectural Approval Form. Both of these forms are on the community web site at www.highlandcreek.com To access the forms, click on: ■■ ■■ ■■ Resources Governing Documents and Forms ARC Fence Request Form or ARC General Request Form You may also pick up either of these forms at the front desk of the Sports Club at 6616 Clarke Creek Parkway. The request will be reviewed by the Modifications Committee, who will respond to you in writing. Please allow 30 days to complete the approval process. Prior approval of your modification or fence installation is required before your work begins; in addition, it may save you time and money. “Quick” Tips for Homeowners Some of the Association related tips below may acquaint you with amenities and activities; others may save you time and money. These are in no way a substitute for your governing documents (which we hope you received at the closing on your home). ■■ Commercial vehicles, trailers, campers or boats shall be parked only in enclosed garages. ■■ Please use the sidewalks and trails to walk, jog, or push baby strollers. It is often difficult to see pedestrians due to vehicles parked on the streets, curves and darkness. ■■ Carry your Highland Creek photo card ID with you when enjoying Association amenities, including pools, trails, basketball courts, tennis courts, etc. ■■ No artificial flowers or vegetation of any kind are permitted on the exterior of your home. ■■ One “vendor” sign may be displayed in your yard only while work is actively in progress on your property. ■■ Burning of trash, leaves, yard debris, etc is not allowed. 33 Highland Creek News...February 2011 www.highlandcreek.com www.highlandcreek.com ■■ Yard ornaments must be natural in color, made of weather resistant materials and less than 18” in height; the maximum number of ornaments in one yard is 5. Ice on the Parkway We often receive calls about ice on the parkway during the winter months. The ice is not the result of irrigation leakage; the irrigation pipes are drained and winterized in November. The water may be seepage from the soil in the medians or due to precipitation. Please watch closely for areas of ice and drive safely. If there is an ice or snow storm, the streets will be plowed, scraped or salted by the City of Charlotte or the City of Concord. The Association is not responsible for this service. Brief List of Association Actions in 2010 ■■ ■■ ■■ ■■ ■■ ■■ ■■ ■■ The kitchen at Prosperity Park Clubhouse was updated and new furniture was purchased for the Clubhouse. The Highland Creek website was totally redesigned. The rest rooms at Christenbury Park Pool were overhauled. A Field Observations Report on the structural analysis of the brick wall bordering HC Parkway was completed by a structural engineering firm. Reserve Advisors was contracted to update a 2007 reserve study of the assets of the Association. In February, 2010, SM&E completed a Visual Dam Evaluations Report for the three primary ponds in the community. One Source Landscaping cleaned out the vegetation, brush, trees, vines and installed rip rap as specified in the report for the Golf Clubhouse, Cambridge Bay and Tunston Lane dams. The first Run the Creek 5K was held; 428 runners/walkers participated; $7,775 was donated to Garret’s Wings. The Christenbury Pool bathhouse was painted. ■■ ■■ ■■ ■■ ■■ ■■ ■■ The new Vision System was installed on hand held devices used by the officers of Securitas Security Service. The Vision System features a multi use reporting system. The Board approved the construction of an octagonal gazebo type structure for Prosperity Park Pool to be used for storage in the winter and shade during pool season. The pool deck at Christenbury Park Pool was replaced and expanded. In September, the Association contracted with Carolina Land Consultants to provide project management and landscape consulting services for the community. Additional holiday banners/poles were added on Millstream Ridge Drive. In order to provide additional light to the HC Parkway and to remove dead/diseased trees, Carolina Land Consultants removed 86 trees and pruned 22 trees throughout the community in late fall. In 2011, 30-40 trees will be installed as needed. The Association contracted with Ranger Construction to implement the full scope of brick wall repairs outlined in the Field Observations Report conducted by a structural engineer in early 2010. Ranger will also install expansion joints at all headers along the brick wall bordering the HC Parkway. The project will begin in January 2011. Please make a New Year’s Resolution to slow down your speed on the parkways and neighborhood streets of Highland Creek. The staff of Hawthorne Management Company appreciates the opportunity to serve as your Association management company. 2011 marks the 20th year of our relationship with Highland Creek!
