The Story of Tony's Coffee Shop in Bvumba - page 5 492666, 492669 www.zimtrader.co.zw [email protected] A very well attended event Mukuvisi Woodlands Eco Schools Challenge 2015 The large scale event represented the culmination of the busy Eco Schools Programme's year of activities and projects. This excellent experiential environmental education programme was launched and has been run for the past six years by the Mukuvisi Woodlands Environmental Education Centre, in line with the global model by the same name. It is having an excellent impact on environmental learning in all the schools who have come aboard and the children undoubtedly have fun and enjoy themselves while they learn. Full-time Eco Schools Programme Co-Ordinator Gibson Nhokwara organised the event, was Master of Ceremonies throughout and spoke very well at the prize-giving ceremony, as did Mukuvisi Woodlands Association Chairman Simon Pitt and Vice Chairman Allain Chimanikire. The busy morning saw all children actively engaged in the sit-down Primary and Secondary Eco Schools Quizzes, plus rushing about in the Woodlands hunting for the clues to answer environmental quiz questions. In the process they explored the Woodlands widely, learnt about the environment, and had fun navigating a Maze created by the Mukuvisi Woodlands team. On display at the event were some very impressive works of art including models, created by participating children as entries in the Eco Schools Challenge, guided by the theme of this year's event. It was clear to see in these artworks that the children fully grasped the most pressing environmental issues of our day, plus the potentially devastating impact of climate change to our futures if action is not taken now to contain this. Attending VIPs were especially impressed by what they saw in this exhibition. Scores in the hunt for environmental clues and answering of questions in the Woodlands, plus in the sit-down quizzes, art and model competition, combined with a review of each school's performance as an Eco School over the year including its environmental networking and outreach activities, together informed final decisions on the overall Most Sustainable Schools in terms of the Programme and its guiding principles. Winning Primary School was Highlands and winning Secondary School was Chinhoyi High. Prizes, funded by the EU, included solar power kits for the winning schools. I 2 Power Cuts By Jacqueline Collins Photos by Hannah Cohen “We must work the works of him who sent me while it is day, night is coming, when no one can work.” John Chapter 9. Verse 4. I have got to the stage where I actually quite like power cuts and load shedding. After all at least when you go to the loo in the middle of the night you don't end up bumping into things. Your smart phone can be nicely charging away all night ready for you to check out Facebook with your morning cup of tea. The fridge keeps everything frozen, it is amazing really that it does not really have to be on all day. The electric gate works smoothly and the bell rings. Best of all there is hot water for a shower or bath, which really sets you up for the day. Really of course, one should just try to adapt, set the alarm to cook that cake for a friend's birthday, after all, it is not the end of the world to wake up at 4 o'clock in the morning, especially in the summer. In fact, these days sometimes I think that it is probably best to not even try to bake and stress yourself Zesa Skit out since luckily there are lots of things you can just buy in the shops. Anyway, compared to a FAULT, power cuts are very bearable. There is nothing worse when the power goes off completely for a few days in a row and gradually the generator starts to sound more and more laboured and the inverter packs up. You have to start making a plan for everything, like putting the gate on manual and then every time you go out you have to hope that someone can hear you hooting so that they can unlock the padlock. By that stage you are forced to rely on shouting because it is no use using the phone as all the batteries are flat. Coughing and sneezing There is nothing quite so grim as being completely off the grid, I hate waking up in the night to not even a Wishing I were dead No angel of mercy glimmer of light anywhere. It is rather a lonely, empty feeling when you are unplugged and totally switched At the foot of my bed off. The worst is when finally you can no longer use the internet, for an addict like me that is just the pits. The longer it goes on, the more the ironing builds up and then suddenly you find you have nothing to Suffering I'm here wear. In a room cold and damp I am just hoping that some budding entrepreneur will read this column and find a way to make solar irons, While you're in the Crimea I think they would just sell like hot cakes. I know you probably could get a solar panel that is able to power Swanning around with a lamp an iron, but at this stage of the game I think that most of us do not have that kind of money to invest. Although having said that, apparently there are credit schemes available, so I might have to look into that Comforting soldiers Who thrill to your beauty at a later stage, especially if the power cuts get any worse. Your nursing skills However, despite all the problems that Zimbabwe is having with the power cuts, sometimes there are Your devotion to duty moments when we rise elegantly above the situation. Recently I attended a most charming poetry event which was called, “An evening of illumination” at Chisipite Senior school. The theme was on light and it O Florence it happens was very encouraging to see that it was very well attended with lots of young people enjoying the poetry Again and again and drama skits. Somehow the brave lights of candles and solar lights added to the poignancy of the As soon as I'm poorly You're on the next train evening, there is something very symbolic and moving about light flickering in the darkness. It was all very cosy, intimate and old fashioned and one of those, 'This is why we live in Zimbabwe' moments. The sheer To some distant frontier talent of some of the girls was remarkable, and I especially The far-flunger the better enjoyed listening to an original poem from performance poet, Where you send a 'Get well' card Chido Charimari. I was sitting next to a lady who admitted that The occasional letter she actually worked at ZESA, but it did not stop her from seeing the humour in the skit on how the people at ZESA work. O Florrie, I'm sorry I think we have all had the very common fantasy that they must sit But this is my prayer: there in their offices with the dice in hand, wondering which area To charge with the Light Brigade And expire in your care. to switch off next, but seeing it actually acted out was hilarious. In fact I am pretty sure that the people at ZESA are really hard Roger McGough working and are doing their level best to ensure that we all stay in power cut rather than Fault mode. Most of the time they are actually really helpful, it is just that the odds are stacked against them. My personal Matthew Roper favourite of the evening was a poem by a male delighted the poet, Roger McGough, who was inspired by Carol audience with his amusing Ann Duffy, the feminist poet. She has a series of rendition of poems about the wives of famous men and so in Mr Nightingale from response McGough wrote a poem about a the book, husband to a famous woman, Florence “The Awkward Age,” Nightingale, the lady with the lamp. BOOK ON GEMSTONES This book is primarily aimed at influencing future geologists and is fairly comprehensive about gems that are found in Zimbabwe and world-wide, with personal interest stories included. If you are one of those people who cannot walk down a path or river bed without collecting a handful of pebbles, or pick up a piece of rough rock and immerse it in water to see the lovely bright patterns and colours, then this book is for YOU. The book is a handy 22x16x1.5cm size, weighing only 600g – not too heavy for your back packs while bush walking/mountain climbing. A perfect gift. A family colouring/puzzle book is also available. Available from leading bookstores or please phone 0772 308 545 / 04- 335013 or email [email protected] My daughter, Jasmine has been practising for her patisserie examination coming up soon, which has unfortunately led to me gaining weight, since I find it hard to resist testing out her recipes. However, this recipe is one of the more healthy ones, with not too much sugar. It is an ideal dessert to have during this hot weather as it is a very cool and light pudding. It can actually be cooked on top of a stove and then put in the freezer part of the fridge to set and it works even if the power has been off for a short time. Jasmine loves to decorate all her sweet dishes with edible flowers such as violas and borage flowers, which you can buy in small plastic cartons at Food Lover's Market in Greendale. They give cakes a very festive look and last for a week or more in the fridge. For many years I have been hoarding little plastic jelly moulds that I used to use for the children's parties. At the time my children were young, it was kind of the fashion to serve jelly in halves of oranges, but I never seemed to manage this time consuming operation. Luckily I finally found these small jelly moulds which were a fantastic hassle free option and then I used them for many birthday parties once I had them. So it was quite fun to find a use for them again after all these years. Vanilla Panacotta goes beautifully with blueberry coulis which is a stunning purple colour. Admittedly this is my third recipe in a row for blueberries but I do love to use ingredients that are in season. Also blueberries are apparently very good for you and packed with antioxidants. This blueberry sauce is also wonderful with ice cream, and makes a change from the ubiquitous chocolate sauce. Strawberries can also be used in the same way and substituted for the blueberries. Vanilla Panacotta Ingredients Blueberry Coulis Method Ÿ 1tsp of gelatine powder Ÿ Lightly oil plastic moulds or ramekins. Ÿ Add 15mls water to sponge the gelatine in Ÿ 250 mls cream Ÿ 1 tsp of vanilla essence a small bowl. (my daughter actually Ÿ Scald or bring the cream up to boiling uses a vanilla pod in her cookery classes, but have never seen these on sale here, but you might want to use one if you have managed to obtain a stash of them) Ÿ 50 g castor sugar. Ÿ 250ml vanilla flavoured yoghurt point with the vanilla and the sugar. Remove from the heat. Ÿ Add the gelatine and whisk until the sugar and the gelatine have dissolved. Ÿ Allow to return to room temperature. Ÿ Lightly whisk the yoghurt, and gradually whisk in the cooled cream mixture. Ÿ Pour the mixture into the moulds or ramekins, cover and refrigerate for at least 3 hours. Ÿ Turn out of the moulds or ramekins to serve with Blueberry Coulis. 4 150g blueberries, juice of quarter of a lemon, 40mls of sugar Ÿ Wash and dry the blueberries. Ÿ Cover with sugar and lemon juice and cook until softened. Ÿ Either mash up the blueberries slightly or liquidise if you prefer a smoother sauce. Back in the mid-1990s when The Cheeseman was established, our press, publicity and advertising drew attention to the many health benefits of dairy foods, as well as highlighting the then alternative point of view, that animal fats (and hence the fats in dairy foods) were not the evil they were made out to be, and that instead, the foods to avoid were refined carbohydrates, especially, sugar. In the past couple of years, we have been fully vindicated in that view, which has at last become mainstream accepted wisdom - so we’re proud to have been somewhat pioneering in going against the grain, even before vast quantities of relevant research were ‘rediscovered’ or analysed more critically, plus plenty of new studies were released, proving unequivocally that it’s not the fat or the cholesterol you eat that makes you gain unwanted weight or threatens your cardiovascular health - it’s the sugar (and all other refined, processed carbs). Of course there are still some traditionalists who cling to the old thinking, in spite of all the evidence to the contrary. But many people are reading up on the current research and taking this knowledge on board. Low carb high fat regimes are all the rage, with full fat dairy foods rightly getting a good rap as very healthy foods! Yes, tuck into all those fabulous cheeses, butter, Greek yoghurt and fresh cream - IT’S ALL GOOD! But no eating plan will improve your health, or trim your waistline (if that is what you want to do) without other lifestyle adjustments, because we evolved, as a species, to move around quite a bit, not sit all day as many of us through our professions find ourselves compelled to do. Some regular moving about, is required for optimal health and weight control, and preferably, doing something you actually enjoy! Teaming up with a friend or family member or joining a club, is a good way to achieve this, as the commitments to regular sessions of whatever moving about rocks your boat, helps with motivation and turns the whole exercise into something social and pleasurable. Good old fashioned brisk walking fits the bill perfectly and choosing somewhere scenic to do it makes it a lot more interesting. Choose the Sunday morning walk (or run or cycle) in Mukuvisi Woodlands; join one of the Mountain Club’s Saturday afternoon walks (or an all day Sunday one if feeling really energetic). Join Run/Walk for Life and make some new friends while you get fitter. Try yoga or pilates or Zumba lots of classes are available. Team up with the mountain biking enthusiasts for a social ride - they cycle through some awesome scenery, none of it far from town. Give triathlon a try; make up a team for a Mini - beginners are always welcome! Whatever you choose, to get in the groove to move for the sake of your health, it needs to be fun then you’ll keep at it, and it will soon get easier! Enjoy Feta in your salad It's the time of year for sunny salad days. What could be more cooling, refreshing or delicious than a classic Greek Salad containing that all important ingredient - Feta Cheese? Opt for local Kefalos or Clavelshay Feta, or try one of the imported brands like Simonsberg or Lancewood. Whichever you choose, feta is simply perfect in any salad! Greek Salad > 6 firm, ripe tomatoes, roughly chopped into chunks > Half to a whole cucumber (depending on size), roughly chopped into cubes > 1 onion, sliced into rings > 1 red pepper, de-seeded, roughly chopped > Olives > 200g Feta Cheese, cubed > 1 teaspoon dried oregano > 1 teaspoon salt > Fresh ground black pepper > 125ml olive oil > 60ml white wine vinegar Coffee Consumption and Healthy Ageing > Combine tomato, cucumber, onion, red pepper, olives and 1 October was International Coffee Day.
