Correspondence to The Secretary Clovelly SLSC PO Box 2094 Clovelly NSW 2031 “off the square” (Available in full colour on the club web site) News, Information and People From Your Club www.clovellysurfclub.com.au OTS written by Geoff James JUNE 2011 (105th edition) 4th ANNUAL SPORTS LUNCH Clovelly Surf Club Sports Lunch was held at the Clovelly Hotel on Friday 6th May. An excellent Clovelly Hotel 3 course lunch, and the wit and wealth of sporting knowledge displayed by our MC Steve “Chimes” Gillis ensured a great day for all. South Sydney Football Manager Mark Ellison spoke of his days as a player under Coach George Piggins, the loss of Chris Sandow and just what the future holds for the Rabbitohs under their new coach in 2012. Johnny Peard, a Rugby League legend had the crowd in his hand as he rolled out a seemingly endless repertoire of jokes and side splitting tales. With junior members reading OTS we cannot retell most of these, Who will forget, the KFC Julia Gillard meal, the drum of zinc for Chissa’s nose, Prince Charles & Camilla Park Your Balls, Elton John’s rewrite of “Candles in the Wind” as “Sandals in the Bin” for the Osama Bin Laden funeral, travelling country areas with Arthur Beetson when he was asked “ do you want todays or yesterdays paper” John replied “todays” , response was “you’ll have to come back tomorrow then”, also in the country they saw T-Bones $3.95- when they ordered, the T-Bones were $13.95 with meat! On his playing days John recalled the 1966 Roosters who didn’t win a match they did a victory lap of the old Sports Ground when they won the toss! There was much more, but you had to be there. Peardie even did an encore performance. Racing Trainer Anthony Cummings gave a few hot tips. He shared his life as a youngster around his Dad Bart’s stables. The stables were like a playground. He remembered the Health Inspectors and how the hands had to constantly shovel up and move the dung pit because of the flies. Anthony was an early trainer of “Might & Power”. He spoke with pride of his recent 100:1 winner, 8 year old “C’est Vie”. His hot tip for Cantebury the next day was “She Must Be Obeyed” . Craig “The Clocker” Thompson shared tales from his life & times. He is trackside from 4.30 - 6.30am. He explained to the crowd that it was the last few hundred metres of any gallop that he was mainly interested in clocking. His hot tip was also “She Must Be Obeyed”. Unfortunately she didn’t obey & was scratched the next day. The JourneyMasters 2010 NSW SURF CLUB OF THE YEAR Founded 1906 Randwick Rugby legend and former Wallaby Jeff Sayle (resplendent in his 1961 blazer) brought another dimension to the lunch. Saylie brought the house down with his comedy mime routines. Previously only seen on Rugby Tours, and after big wins by the Galloping Greens, Jeff performed his “Silent Fisherman” routine. With the crowd in stitches, Jeff then had the crowd rolling in the aisles with the rarely seen “Silent Astronaut”. Forever the diplomat, Saylie wouldn’t be drawn on the greatest ever Randwick player. He did say that any consideration would include names like Cyril Towers, Ken Catchpole & Mark Ella. When Chimes asked Saylie about early “boot money” in the amateur Rugby days, he replied that the Wicks couldn’t give the Ellas “boot money” because they came to training bare footed ! He remembered sending a few of the boys to collect wood for the Latham Park BBQ after training one cold night -the boys complied and all was well - next morning Saylie received a call from South Coogee Bowling Club asking about their missing fence!! Jeff also recalled his days as a Patrol Captain at Coogee SLSC with Chimes in his team. Legendary raconteurs and a day to be remembered ! Thankyous to Zac Davis &Clovelly Hotel for the venue & lunch, James Brindley &Tooheys for providing the beer, Jenny Eliades &Top Cat Catering for the wine.
