After nine (9) months of regular Sunday morning meetings we are finally able to present to the Membership at the 2015 AGM a revised Constitution and updated By-Laws. ◗ To provide a safe aquatic environment by protecting and ensuring the safety of swimmers and the general public; CATEGORY Active 15-18yrs Active Over 18yrs 2009/10 ◗ provide opportunities for members to compete at Club/Branch/State/National carnivals; ◗ develop ways to ensure members can meet patrol requirements in conjunction with work/family commitments and additional countable volunteer hours are recorded for each member; ◗ ensure volunteer Office Bearers will have a greater understanding of their position roles and responsibilities. In this World Rescue 2014, the girls achieved the following results: Wendy Pepper 1st Beach Flags , 1st Beach Sprint, 6th Board Jo Emery 2nd Beach Sprint, 4th Flags, 6th Board 22 CLOVELLY SURF LIFSAVING CLUB Caroline Smith 5th Flags, 8th Sprint, 10th Board Caroline, Jo, Wendy 1st Beach Relay , 5th Board Relay Wendy, Jo 3rd Board Rescue FRESHWATER MASTERS This carnival was held on Saturday November 29, 2014. As always, Clovelly fielded a strong contingent with some old timers and some first timers. The only Clovelly winner on the day was the perennial John McNamee in the sprint. Strong performances and placings were obtained in a range of events. Wendy Pepper has a new Queenscliff nemesis just entering her age group. Relay teams took out numerous placings. Well done to all. COOGEE CARNIVAL Held on the first Saturday of February every year, it now incorporates the Branch Masters Championships. The evergreen John McNamee once again added to his portfolio of titles. He will be Sir John soon! For the 10th consecutive year John took out his age beach sprint. He also placed in the flags and the tube swim. Our girl’s beach relay were unfortunately a DQ. They missed 2 members who were down in the Victorian wilderness, at a place called Harrietville for Gilly’s birthday! Carnivals can’t happen without officials. Thank you to Clovelly officials who attended this carnival Craig Wheatley, Rod Fox, Jenny McNamee & Steve Yeates. COMPETITION ROUND UP CLOVELLY SLSC NSW SURF LIFESAVING CHAMPIONSHIPS A small but highly committed Clovelly Team competed in the Masters Carnival over Wednesday to Friday 11-13th March. The perennial John McNamee yet again led the way with gold medals in both the flags and the sprint. John also competed in the tube race and the board rescue a gentleman of many talents! In other individual events, congratulations to the following Clovelly athletes: off to Gallipoli for the Anzac commemorative row after State Championships, were strong in taking the silver in the 160 years boat. Sweep Glen Holland was then immediately off to hospital for an operation that he had delayed till after this event. AUSTRALIAN SLSA CHAMPIONSHIPS Yet again a small Clovelly Team have shown that it is quality not quantity that counts. In the National Masters Championships at Kirra in April, John McNamee and our lady Wendy Pepper representatives reaped the 2nd Flags rewards of all the hours of hard training and dedication that Jo Emery 3rd Sprint, 6th Flags & 5th Board they have put in this season. Catherine Mottee 2nd Flags Congratulations on the following great results: Bernadette Chisholm 2-km Beach Run John McNamee 1st in 70-year Sprint & 3rd Flags The ladies teams were outstanding! The Beach Relay team of Wendy Pepper, Jo Emery, Rennie Finch & Caroline Smith took Bronze. In the Board Relay Wendy, Jo & Caroline Smith put in a great team performance for Bronze. Wendy (board) and Jo (swim) combined for the Board Rescue. In a shock result they managed a wave superbly to the beach for the silver. Thank you to our friends at Coogee for the loan of the competition rescue board used by the girls. (Craig Bennett & Andrew Bargenda then reclaimed the board and took silver in their Board Rescue for Coogee). In other team events, John McNamee & Geoff James competed strongly in their Board Rescue final despite their novel use of a softie rescue board in the event. Bernadette Chisholm 2nd in 2-km Age Beach Run, 7th Open 2-km beach run. Our Masters Boaties Brian Freeman, Roy Robinson, Trevor Falson, Slade Hedderman & Glen Holland, who headed Our Aussie’s competitors were supported by Jenny McNamee who was also an official for the titles. The 2016 Aussies will be held across Queensland Sunshine Coast beaches Maroochydore, Mooloolaba & Alexandra Headlands, from April 6 to 24. Geoff James Vice-President In the Open, Bernie defeated the girl who had beaten her for gold in their age run! Wendy Pepper 2nd 50+-year Flags Jo Emery 3rd 50+-year Sprint Renee Finch, Caroline Smith, Wendy Pepper & Jo Emery 3rd 200+ beach relay. Wendy Pepper & Jo Emery 4th Board Rescue Wendy Pepper, Jo Emery & Caroline Smith 5th board Relay With a rising swell and deteriorating conditions it was great to see the Clovelly girls performing with distinction in the water after their efforts on the beach. I would just like to finish by adding I will be standing again next season as I reckon I have the best job in the world. See you next season. Lee Killigrew Clovelly Nippers President ESKIMO’S REPORT CLOVELLY SLSC Celebrating 60years of winter swimming ESKIMO’ S REPORT The 2014 winter swimming season was a combination of fun, frivolity, social extravagance mixed in with a little aquatic competition. Seven months absence from the joys of frostbite, mushy peas and gladiatorial up-the-bay racing ensured we had a very enthusiastic group ready to hit the water at the start of the season. 2014 was indeed a year to remember. Undoubtedly the highlight of the season was the 60th anniversary celebrations conducted at the magnificent ATC Function Rooms at Royal Randwick in July. Attended by 200 members and guests past and present, the evening was a fitting tribute to our Club’s great history. Planning the evening commenced some nine months prior to the event, and the organisational performance of Karon Lekeu and Dick Halliday was world class in this regard. They were ably assisted by a large team of helpers, all of whom contributed to the success of the night in one way or another. Special mention should go to newly appointed Club historian Heidi Norman, who supplemented the celebrations with a wonderful video presentation documenting the history of our Club. Following on from 2013, membership continued on an upward trend in 2014, particularly in the female ranks where numbers increased by a stunning 30%. The Club was, as usual, triumphant in The Metropolitan Championships in Bondi and The Australian titles at Botany. Aside from our outstanding performances in the pool, the spirited blue and white support in the grandstands set us apart from our rivals. Once again, these events showcased the values of The Eskimos in no uncertain terms. Out of the water, the Club continued its tradition of having a good time on dry land. Many thanks to Paul Smith and the surf Club for being wonderful hosts of our weekly presentations. Recent renovations make the Club surely the best post swim social venue this side of Waikiki. The infamous annual pub crawl in June continues to increase in popularity, while the famed Bruce Sinclair Relay against The Bronte Splashers in July has now reached “major” status. Finally in this, my last report as President, I would like to thank Karon, Spekky, Scats and Mark whose weekly efforts have made my life in the role a pleasure – you guys are the best! A big pat on the back to Ando for his pathological mastery of computers and numbers, Marge and Ros at the handicappers desk, chef to the stars Gordon, Dick for his taste in music and beer supplying skills, Cerrin with the juniors and of course Jim King – arguably the best Club secretary in winter swimming. The report would not be complete without mentioning all the Club Members who in their own way contribute to the successful running of this organisation. Without your help and support, none of the fun can happen. Bring on 2015!
