SECRETARY’S REPORT
A WORD FROM
OUR SECREATARY
On behalf of the Management
Committee of Clovelly SLSC
it gives me great pleasure to
present the 109th Annual Report
for the 2014 – 2015 season
together with the financial
statements and balance sheet
for the year ending April 30, 2015
of the Clovelly Surf Lifesaving
Club Incorporated.
The purpose of Clovelly SLSC is:
in the Active 15-18 year membership
category. These are the members that
represent the future of our Club.
◗ develop a “one Club” feel – Nippers,
Cadets, Senior Patrolling Members,
Associates and Eskimos Members
are all part of “One Club”;
This has been my first season as Secretary
and I have been well supported by the
Management Committee, Nipper and
Eskimo Sub-committees, our Club
Administrator, Ms Margaret Murray and
the Club Office Bearers.
◗ engage new members from the
community;
◗ To provide programs that encourage
education and skills enhancement;
◗ To promote inclusiveness and
engagement of all members of the
community to be involved in surf
life saving.
In conjunction with the Constitution
& By-Laws review the Management
Committee has commenced the process
of updating policies and procedures and is
◗ To educate the community about
beach safety;
We would not to be able to provide these
services without the very generous support
and funding received from our partners,
including:
◗ offer new and current members high
quality education programs;
One of my goals for this season was to
update the Club Constitution and By-Laws.
I was fortunate that some of our Life
Members including Ken Ryan, Mark Percy
and Glen Clarke were all keen to assist in
the review.
Warwick LaHood and Ian Rennie provided
initial professional advice about how
to manage the review process and this
advice proved to be invaluable. After nine
(9) months of regular Sunday morning
meetings we are finally able to present to
the Membership at the 2015 AGM a revised
Constitution and updated By-Laws.
◗ To provide a safe aquatic environment
by protecting and ensuring the safety
of swimmers and the general public;
CATEGORY
Active 15-18yrs

◗ provide opportunities for members to
compete at Club/Branch/State/National
carnivals;
◗ develop ways to ensure members can
meet patrol requirements in conjunction
with work/family commitments and
additional countable volunteer hours are
recorded for each member;
◗ ensure volunteer Office Bearers will have
a greater understanding of their position
roles and responsibilities.
I look forward to being a part of this process
during the 2015/16 season.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT
A BIG
THANK YOU
As we close another successful season
at Clovelly SLSC I am happy to report that
once again no lives were lost. This was my
second season as President and I have
enjoyed the year and all the support given
to me by the Club. I would like to thank
the Management Committee for all their
support and assistance this year and the
hours they have dedicated to ensuring the
smooth running of our Club.
I would like to highlight a few members
of our Club for their service this past
year, firstly Geoff James in his role as
Vice President – his continual support
has been invaluable and his expertise in
collating our monthly newsletter Off the
Square is appreciated by all members.
Also to Russell Byrne, Vice President who
assists me in many Club matters but is well
known for organising a successful social
function and Sports Lunch with Ryan Airlie.
I would like to thank Rebecca Cocks in her
first year as Secretary, she has done a great
job and has devoted many hours in this
role. Under her guidance I know our Club
will be very professionally run. Rebecca
was also part of the Constitution Review
Sub-committee.
Additionally, I wish to thank the Subcommittee members of Ken Ryan, Mark
Percy, Glen Clarke and Warwick LaHood
for the many hours they contributed to
updating the Constitution and By-Laws

CLOVELLY SURF LIFSAVING CLUB
Congratulations to all our
members who competed
throughout the season at Local,
Branch, State, National (Aussies)
and World Titles. Clovelly SLSC
brought home many Gold, Silver
and Bronze medals. Whilst we
have a dedicated Masters group,
I would like to encourage more
of our younger members to
compete in coming seasons.
Our Club Captain, Gerry McGillion will retire
after this season. I would like to thank him
for his dedication and service and to his
Lifesaving Committee and Patrol Captains
for their leadership within the Club this
season. A special thank you to all patrolling
members for their tireless service in
keeping Clovelly and Gordons Bay safe
for the general public.
Ken Ryan’s Junior Summer Swim Club
continues to grow each season which
is great to see, keep up the great work
Ken. Our winter swim club, The Eskimos
continues to be well supported and is
open to new swimmers each season.
Annually, we present the Dave Murray Relay
to remember a past Life Member, and the
Tom Caddy Relay, to celebrate the life of a
“Clovelly Legend”. Both of these days were
highly successful this season, with many
members involved from the local area.
The catering team of Troy and Brendan
and their staff have put on some tantalising
eats during the season which have been
enjoyed by all.
I would also like to thank Randwick City
Council for their continued financial
support and assistance along with all our

The Tom Caddy Relay was contested
with teams from the Surf Club, Eskimos,
Nippers, City Tatts, Nipper Parents and the
Ken Ryan Swim Club. This event was won
by the Nippers Parents team, in a rewarding
and fun day.
Our Clovelly Nippers once again had a full
beach with 400 young members, 25 of
whom attended the State Titles along with
their parents with great success and a great
season was had by all. Steve Yeats, former
President of the Surf Club, has finally retired
as a Nipper Age Manger. He started with his

all the way through to gaining their SRC and
joining the ranks of patrolling members.
Finally, I would like to thank Margaret Murray,
our Club Administration Officer for her work
this season and the help she has given me.
Sadly, we have lost members this season.
We offer our deepest sympathy to the
families and friends of Bede Cook, Garry
Stanmore, Ron Waters and Michelle O’Shea.
To members who have lost a loved one
please accept our sympathy.
To the many members of Clovelly who
I have not mentioned, who work behind the
scenes, help raise funds, sell merchandise,
run BBQ’s and so on, a big Thank You – your
efforts do not go unnoticed.

Our third and final Bronze
Medallion squad for the season
was trained by Madeleine
Wheatley, adding another
12 members to our patrols.
Chris Thompson, Glen Clarke
and Jessica Wheatley assisted
Madeleine with the training.
Clovelly also trained one very
large squad of Surf Rescue
Certificate (SRC) candidates.
We had 25 candidates from the
Under 14 Nippers complete their
SRC this season. This squad
was trained by Craig Wheatley,
Madeleine Wheatley and Jessica
Wheatley.
It was also great to see our
Members up-skilling with
five individuals gaining their
Advanced Resuscitation
Techniques Certificate (ARTC)
Award. Thank you to John and
Jenny McNamee for training
this course.
Tania Rouse has once again
dedicated much of the season
to training IRB squads. This
season 5 IRB Crew members
and 6 IRB Drivers have been
trained. Tania, as lead trainer,
also played a key role in

mentoring Molly Cocks and
Gordon Manuel to become

IRB training team would not
be complete without the
assistance of Gareth Turner
and Andrew Goodieson, thank
you for your help throughout
the season.
It is fantastic to see Clovelly
SLSC members participating
in Branch Facilitated courses
Silver Medallion Basic Beach
Management and Silver
Medallion Aquatic Rescue.
The Education Committee
not only trains new squads,
but also ensures our patrolling
members remain proficient.
The number of members
completing proficiencies
has increased this season in
all award categories, with an
impressive 179 individuals
completing their Bronze
Medallion proficiency at Clovelly.
I would also like to commend
the amazing work that our
Assessors have done this
season in both the Randwick
and Waverley Districts and
within the Sydney Branch.
Thank you to Chris Thompson,
Glen Clarke, Tania Rouse, Jenny
McNamee and John McNamee.
Tania Rouse was recognised at
the Sydney Branch Awards of
Excellence, she was awarded
a High Commendation
for Assessor of the Year.
Congratulations to Tania!
The Nippers Surf Education

Thank you to Jon Dyster and
his team for educating the
Nippers in surf education and
taking the first steps to joining
the Senior Club.
I would also like to thank
my Assistant Chief Training
Officer, Jennifer McNamee.
Jenny’s support, knowledge
and experience has been a
great help to me and I couldn’t
have got through the season
without her.
This season has been a great
success which would not have
been achieved without the
support and commitment from
the Education Committee.
Thank you to everyone for
making this season extremely
enjoyable and successful.

CLUB CAPTAIN’S REPORT
Can You
Hear Me?
CLUB CAPTAIN’S
REPORT
Another season has flown
by so quickly, and I am happy
to announce again, that no
lives were lost in the Clovelly
region. This is a tribute to all our
patrolling members’ vigilance
throughout the 2014-15 season,
with a total of 8,512 patrol hours
covered. Thank you to all the
patrol captains for taking on the
leadership role and contributing
to a total of 35 rescues during
the season.
Patrol numbers remain high
thanks to the hard work of
Jessica Wheatley and her
Education team. Lifesaving
depends on this team to run
proficiencies, train new Bronze
Members and the growing
number of Under 14 Nippers
who complete their SRC.
The IRB section of the Club just
keeps going from strength to
strength. IRB Captain, Gordon
Manuel and his Vice Captain,
Andrew Goodieson have done
a great job in their first season
holding these positions.

CLOVELLY SURF LIFSAVING CLUB
This season the IRB team took
delivery of one new IRB and
two new motors. The IRB was
purchased with funds donated
by Bendigo Bank. Thanks to
our capable IRB trainers, a
total of six new drivers and five
new crew members joined the
team. It was great to see the
IRB team provide water safety
at many carnivals and ocean
swims throughout the season,
a service which we had not been
able to do in previous seasons.
Finally I would like to thank the
Management Committee for
their support throughout the
season.
Unfortunately, due to my current
work commitments, I will be
standing down as Club captain
at the end of this season. I will
miss the interaction with all
patrolling members and I thank
you all for your support over the
last two seasons. I look forward
to supporting the new Club
captain for the 2015-16 Season.
Thanks to our Gear Steward,
Gerry McGillion
Phil Sweeney and our First
Club Captain
Aid Officer, Roslyn Manuel for
keeping all of our equipment and
first aid supplies up to standard. Equipment throughout the
season was always in good
working order and any damaged/
broken equipment was fixed/
replaced in a timely manner.
The First Aid room was always
clean and well stocked.
Working as hard as ever in
the background is our Club
Administrator Margaret Murray,
I would like to thank her for all the
assistance she has given me in
my role as Club Captain.

FRESHWATER MASTERS
This carnival was held on
Saturday November 29, 2014.
As always, Clovelly fielded a
strong contingent with some old
timers and some first timers.
The only Clovelly winner on the
day was the perennial John
McNamee in the sprint. Strong
performances and placings
were obtained in a range of
events. Wendy Pepper has a
new Queenscliff nemesis just
entering her age group. Relay
teams took out numerous
placings. Well done to all.
COOGEE CARNIVAL
Held on the first Saturday of
February every year, it now
incorporates the Branch
Masters Championships. The
evergreen John McNamee
once again added to his
portfolio of titles. He will be
Sir John soon! For the 10th
consecutive year John took
out his age beach sprint. He
also placed in the flags and
the tube swim. Our girl’s beach
relay were unfortunately a DQ.
They missed 2 members who
were down in the Victorian
wilderness, at a place called
Harrietville for Gilly’s birthday!
Carnivals can’t happen without
officials. Thank you to Clovelly
officials who attended this
carnival Craig Wheatley, Rod

A small but highly committed
Clovelly Team competed in
the Masters Carnival over
Wednesday to Friday 11-13th

In the Board Relay Wendy,
Jo & Caroline Smith put in a
great team performance for

managed a wave superbly to the
beach for the silver. Thank you
to our friends at Coogee for the
loan of the competition rescue
board used by the girls. (Craig
Bennett & Andrew Bargenda
then reclaimed the board and
took silver in their Board Rescue

their novel use of a softie rescue

ESKIMO’S REPORT CLOVELLY SLSC
Celebrating
60years of
winter swimming
ESKIMO’ S
REPORT
The 2014 winter swimming season
was a combination of fun, frivolity,
social extravagance mixed in
with a little aquatic competition.
Seven months absence from
the joys of frostbite, mushy peas
and gladiatorial up-the-bay
racing ensured we had a very
enthusiastic group ready to hit the
water at the start of the season.
2014 was indeed a year to
remember. Undoubtedly the
highlight of the season was the
60th anniversary celebrations
conducted at the magnificent
ATC Function Rooms at Royal
Randwick in July. Attended by
200 members and guests past
and present, the evening was a
fitting tribute to our Club’s great
history. Planning the evening
commenced some nine months
prior to the event, and the
organisational performance of
Karon Lekeu and Dick Halliday
was world class in this regard.
They were ably assisted by a
large team of helpers, all of whom
contributed to the success of
the night in one way or another.
Special mention should go to
newly appointed Club historian
Heidi Norman, who supplemented
the celebrations with a wonderful
video presentation documenting
the history of our Club.
Following on from 2013,
membership continued on
an upward trend in 2014,
particularly in the female ranks
where numbers increased by a
stunning 30%.
The Club was, as usual,
triumphant in The Metropolitan
Championships in Bondi and
The Australian titles at Botany.
Aside from our outstanding
performances in the pool, the
spirited blue and white support
in the grandstands set us apart
from our rivals. Once again,
these events showcased the
values of The Eskimos in no
uncertain terms.
Out of the water, the Club
continued its tradition of having
a good time on dry land. Many
thanks to Paul Smith and the surf
Club for being wonderful hosts
of our weekly presentations.
Recent renovations make the
Club surely the best post swim
social venue this side of Waikiki.
The infamous annual pub crawl
in June continues to increase in
popularity, while the famed Bruce
Sinclair Relay against The Bronte
Splashers in July has now reached
“major” status.
Finally in this, my last report as
President, I would like to thank
Karon, Spekky, Scats and Mark
whose weekly efforts have made
my life in the role a pleasure – you
guys are the best!
A big pat on the back to Ando
for his pathological mastery of
computers and numbers, Marge
and Ros at the handicappers desk,
chef to the stars Gordon, Dick
for his taste in music and beer
supplying skills, Cerrin with the
juniors and of course Jim King –
arguably the best Club secretary
in winter swimming.
The report would not be complete
without mentioning all the Club
Members who in their own way
contribute to the successful
running of this organisation.
Without your help and support,
none of the fun can happen.
Bring on 2015!
