A cold Sunday afternoon in early
December. The smartly dressed
young New Yorkers crammed into the
Carnegie Hill apartment of my then
girlfriend were an anachronism –
more Breakfast at Tiffany’s than post
millennial 30-somethings. Stephanie
slipped about greeting friends old
and new. Lucy, her Bichon, worked
the floor, confident in the treats that
would fall from above. Children of
all ages, always welcome, were piled
on her bed watching movies, spoiled
with brightly colored holiday treats.
At dusk everyone rushed off, hot
cocoa in-hand, to watch the tree
lighting on Park Avenue.
More
than holiday decoration, I learned
that the trees on Park Avenue were
lit to remember Americans who lost
their lives defending our country. A
tradition started in 1945.
That wa s the first of many treelighting parties with Stephanie,
Lucy, and now our son Junie. Each
year, I’m certain the lights sparkle
just a touch brighter than the year
before.
We hope these Snowscapes have the
same effect.
