Almost everyone on campus has walked
by it, but few know its rich history.
The sixteen-foot bronze statue of Lesya Ukrainka (1871-1913),
the celebrated Ukrainian poet, currently sits in a quiet grove
just south of the Arts Tower and was unveiled at the U of S in
1976 amid celebration and controversy. Commissioned by the
Association for Cultural Relations of the USSR, the statue was
at the time seen by some as an attempt to dignify injustices
perpetrated by the Soviets against the people of Ukraine.
Today, however, the statue stands as an important marker
of Ukrainian heritage and culture at the University of
Saskatchewan.
With an endorsement from the Ukrainian Canadian Congress
(Saskatoon Branch), the University Library has begun
exploring the establishment of the Lesya Ukrainka Garden,
a permanent outdoor space designed to showcase the Lesya
Ukrainka statue. In this new space, members of the campus
and wider communities will gather and learn more about
Ukrainian culture and history.

Construction will soon begin on the new Gordon Oakes-Red
Bear Student Centre, which will be built in close proximity to
the statue of Lesya Ukrainka. In an attempt to preserve and
enhance the statue’s physical and symbolic prominence on
campus, the University Library has proposed the development
of the LESYA UKRAINKA GARDEN.
