A WORD FROM...
Reflectively-Practiced & Need-Responsive
Several year ago, as a part of our transformation process, we participated in
the Acts 16:5 Initiative. This was a two-year practical study designed to
increase the vitality and relevance of the local church through focused
evaluation and implementation of Jesus’ message and method for ministry.
Our process in Acts 16:5 led to our mission statement and a path to define and consolidate all of our ministry through
this God-inspired, God-driven statement.
We learned that a good theological basis for any defining vision which seeks to be transformational, must be:
reflectively practiced, principle patterned, gathered scattered, need-responsive, disciple directed. I wish to highlight two
of these theological principles.
Reflectively practiced is a very reformed idea. It means to continually look back at what you have done while looking
through the lens of the defining vision. For Christians who worship in the reformed tradition, it means laying God’s Word
alongside of our ministry and ministry programs to see if we are in line with God and God’s actions in the world. For our
leaders at MWPC, it means reflecting on our mission through the lens of our defining vision to see if we are in line.
Need-responsive is similar in that we evaluate if we are meeting the needs of those in and around our community. Each
year we reflectively evaluate our ministry which includes the question, how are we meeting needs as the church?
For several years, this process has provided valuable information to help us serve God through Jesus’ Church.
Strategic family ministry has continually risen as a need and an area of our defining vision where we could provide
strengthening. The other area was our Sunday morning middle and high School Christian education small groups. It
was revealing to discover the student Sunday School program was not covered by any of our trained staff, nor had it
been for over 15 years or more.
We also found that we needed a coordination of children’s ministry, Sunday school, the Wednesday afternoon choir club
program and a structured implementation of a family ministry. The remedy was clear to us, but the resources were a
road block. However, the generosity of our faith community has now made it possible to move forward into our vision.
This spring, the I met with the session to do some visioning. In the process, the overwhelming need which surfaced
was once again the children and family area including choir club. So, we are excited to announce a new staff position
at Markham Woods – Director of Christian Education. This position will include expanded childrens’ and family ministry,
as well as a coordinator of educational ministries. Correspondingly, Cheryl Beck has been promoted to full-time Director
of Heathrow Christian Academy (pre-school and kindergarten), while Chris Leinenkugel will continue her work with adult
ministries.
Markham Woods is so fortunate that we do have a multi-generational church, however, this will only continue as we
Grow The Faith Of The Whole Family Of God. There need not be “lost generations” if we sow seeds of outreach,
inreach and love, especially with our children and their families. As these seeds are nurtured, they will sustain and grow
the church into the future, thereby continuing the work of our Lord and savior, Jesus Christ.
We thank God for the faith and expressions of faith within this congregation. “Praise God from whom all blessing flow” is
not only a Doxology, it is a reality here at MWPC!

In recent meetings, Session took the following actions:
 Elected elders to serve as elder commissioners to the June 2 meeting of Central
Florida Presbytery.
 Approved hiring Cara Wendorph as Director of Communications.
 Approved recommendation that Ann Bailey Holt hold an American Girl Summer
Camp at the church.
 Approved request that MOPS International hold a conference at the church June
3 and 4.
 Approved Herman Medema and Debra Drazan to serve on the HCA board.
 Received into church membership a member of the confirmation class who was
unable to be received with the other participants.
 Accepted the resignation from the Session of John Gutekunst and from the
diaconate of Dick Siegrist, both of whom moved out of the area.
 Removed the name of a church member who recently passed away.
 Approved a policy regarding Session giving permission for weddings, funerals/
memorial services and baptisms.
 Accepted the resignation of Alisa Johnson as choir director (moving out of state).
 Approved recommendation to seek a Director of Music Ministry and Director of
Christian Education.
 Approved temporary position of summer music coordinator and summer intern
for the Youth Program.
 Approved several job descriptions for various positions at the church.
 Heard reports from various committees including an analysis by the Finance
Committee on various aspects of the church's financial position and information
from the Property Committee and Technology Committee concerning problems
with various pieces of equipment and damage to church property.

We are looking for volunteers who are willing to come on Sunday nights to hang out with students, be their mentors and help guide them closer to Christ by showing them His love for them. There is no age limit for spreading
love!
The high school group has arrived home safely from their mission trip and they had a great time! They spent a
week in Chattanooga, Tennessee where they did many projects around a Christian Camp getting it ready for students’ arrival.
We would love to say thank you once again to everyone who helped make the trip possible through your donations!! This was a week the students will never forget.
Our middle school group is heading to camp August 2nd-6th. This is for all students going into 6th grade, 7th
grade, 8th grade and 9th grade. The cost for this camp is $399. The camp is called The Great Escape and will be
held at Southwind which is an amazing camp approximately 45 minutes away from the church. If you know anyone
interested please have them sign up soon to guarantee a spot!!

Cave Quest VBS 2016 was a huge success! Children’s Ministry would like to thank all of our volunteers for making
this possible. We hosted 140 students during the week. Over 60 adults and students volunteered throughout the
week. The children learned that God’s light shines through the darkest of times. They also learned that God gives
us: Hope, Courage, Direction, Love and His Power to get through the dark times of life.
Thanks again for your support of this huge outreach program.
Welcome and Blessings
After many prayers for discernment and months of searching, we are pleased to announce the addition to our ministry staff, Cynthia “Cindy” Teetzel, as our new Director of Christian Education with a special focus on children and
family ministry. Cindy comes to us with a vast amount of knowledge and skills. Her energetic and tireless enthusiasm is contagious.
Cindy earned a Bachelor of Arts degree at UCF in Interdisciplinary Study of Humanities and Social Studies with a
Minor in Recreation. She has worked as Director of Children’s ministry at South Lake Presbyterian Church; activities director at Family Christian school in Clermont, where she coordinated the pre-K-5th grade program; Administrator at The Lord’s gym, in Clermont, where she designed and led children’s’ fitness programs for ages 5-11. Cindy
also developed and organized a “Wonderful Wednesday” program for students as Cypress Ridge Elementary
School.
Cindy is a woman of faith with a bubbly and warm personality. I invite you to, not only meet Cindy in the coming
weeks, but to join with her as she adds to our mission and ministry. When she asks you to partner with her in ministering to our children and families, offer her a resounding yes!
Discovering the Root of the Reformation with MWPC and Pastor Joe
We will be traveling to the United Kingdom next summer to explore some of the birth places of the Reformed Tradition
of which, as Presbyterians, claim as our birth place too. While there, we will be cruising on the Princess Cruise line
around the United Kingdom not only visiting Reformation sites, but also other historical areas. This trip is open to
everyone, so make plans to join us now. Please note website for the Reformation cruise at link below.

the opportunities for learning and ministry in the Fall! You won’t want to miss it.

Alpha Kick Off / Invitation Dinner is Tuesday, September 6, 2016 at 6:30 p.m. Be our guest for dinner.
Please sign up by Sunday September 4th. Childcare is provided with snack! This is a great “come and see”
opportunity for the Alpha course. If you like it, you can register that evening. (Alpha alumni are also welcome!
Please think about bringing a friend).
The course runs on Tuesday evenings for 10 weeks from September 13 – November 15. Dinner is served each
night free of charge and child care is provided. Each week features a thought provoking DVD presentation
by Nicky Gumbel on important questions of life approached from a Christian perspective. Small group discussions
follow. Bring your friends and neighbors. Sign up in Anderson Hall or contact Chris Leinenkugel at the church office

There is also a retreat during the course and it is October 21 & 22, 2016 (Friday-Saturday).
It is held at the church. Mark your calendars now to join us!
Celebration Dinner following the course is on Tuesday, November 22.

Grief Group Beginning Fall of 2016
Date: Sunday evenings—September 4 – November 6, 2016
Time: 5:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.

We will be hosting another grief group this fall. Led by Pastor Joe, it will run weekly for about 10 weeks. If you have
lost a loved one and are experiencing symptoms of grief, loneliness, loss of sleep, overwhelming sadness, and
struggling to find someone to talk to, please consider joining this group. We will learn and talk about grieving and
our own grief journeys. Please sign up in Anderson Hall.

WHO IS THAT GUY

Meet Tom Reininger
Have you wondered who that guy is that greets you almost every Sunday at the front doors of the Sanctuary at the
early service and sometimes both? Well, in case you haven’t been introduced, his name is Tom Reininger. How did
he get that job? Well, he was asked to help the ushers open the doors for our members and guests one Sunday over
a year ago and he’s never stopped. He said he found it to be FUN! He also continues to do this for the simple reason
that he has been told that “you’re one of the reasons we enjoy coming to Service every Sunday.” How can you stop
after hearing that?
Tom and his wife, Robin, moved to Lake Mary approximately 4 years ago, and attended Markham Woods for the first
time around Easter 2012. Tom and Robin are both from Western Pennsylvania, near Pittsburgh. He was born in
Johnstown, PA and Robin is from Washington, PA. Surprisingly, Robin is from the same hometown as Dick Siegrist
who you may have read about in just last month’s Markham Messenger. Robin and Dick Siegrist both are graduates
of Washington and Jefferson College in Washington, PA. This connection was discovered quickly when the two
couples were introduced at church several years ago. It certainly is a small world.
Tom is a Veteran of the U.S. Coast Guard and served 4 years as an aircraft mechanic stationed in Miami, FL. During
his service with the Coast Guard he saved 23 people on rescue missions for the Coast Guard, including saving 13
lives from the 1972 crash in the Everglades of an Eastern Airlines L-1011 Jumbo Jet. When he left the Coast Guard
he went back to Pennsylvania to go to school for an A & P (Airframe & Powerplant) license at the Pittsburgh Institute
of Aeronautics. After graduating he worked for 10 years as a Corporate Jet Pilot for Mellon Bank in Pittsburgh. He
then was hired briefly by US Air as a pilot but after four months on the job, he along with 310 other pilots, was
furloughed for 3 years during a downturn in the industry. Tom made a connection with David Rockefeller of the
Rockefeller family while on a temporary flying assignment as a pilot for a private charter flight to Russia. David
Rockefeller approached him after that trip and offered him the job of Corporate Jet Pilot for a family business and that
eventually led to his becoming a Corporate Jet Pilot with Chase Bank for 20 years.
Tom’s last flying position was a part-time on-call corporate jet pilot for 2.5 years for another client, which allowed him
to move to Florida with Robin and ease into retirement. He became active in Markham Woods church men’s groups
and other areas when he wasn’t flying for this last client and looked forward to the end of his 30+ year career in the
Aviation industry. Little did he know his retirement would only last for 1 year and 2 months! Through a connection
with another MWPC church member, he un-retired himself and went back to work. He is now working almost full-time
again as a flight simulator and ground school instructor of flight safety for a company near OIA since last September.
So, next time you see Tom, let him know how much you know about him!
GOD CONTINUES TO BLESS MWPC
Transitions are a way of life for all of us including the church. However, transitions are also an
opportunity for transformation. This past May, near the conclusion of the choir season, Alisa
Johnson, our choir director, informed us that she was relocating to Tennessee to be with her
husband on a full-time basis. Tim, her husband, has a home there, and was commuting back
and forth to Sanford during the choir season. Alisa, in turn, was commuting up to Tennessee
during the summer choir hiatus.
We are sad to see Alisa move on, as she brought a wonderful sound and spirit to our choir at an important time of transition. She also directed the Christmas Eve drama and the Good Friday Tenebrae service. However, as the title of
this article suggests, God continues to bless us!
This fall, Melinda Efta was awarded the Perinchief Choral Scholarship. You may remember, this scholarship was created in honor of Dr. Burt Perinchief’s dedicated service to Markham Woods as Director of Music Ministry. The award
is granted to a student who has chosen choral music as a field of study. During the year, you probably noticed Melinda
helping to lead the choir, sing solos in worship, and help with the Wednesday afternoon choir club
program.
As the search begins to find a replacement for Alisa Johnson, our music program in worship continues as it has each
summer. So, for the interim period, we are pleased to announce that we have hired Melinda as a summer intern to
help coordinate the solos, ensembles and instrumentals which add so much to our summer worship. Melinda is also
helping to lead hymns and act as lector reader for the first scripture lesson during 11:00 worship.
I hope you will welcome Melinda in this new role and thank God for providing even more blessings! We invite you to
pray that we be attentive to God’s movement as the search for a new choir director continues.

We at Markham Woods Presbyterian Church
would like to extend our congratulations to
Emily Erdman, who has just been selected to
play in the 2016 All National Honor Ensembles
Symphony Orchestra. The event will take
place at the Gaylord Texan Resort in Dallas
TX on Nov. 13th
She also has the honor of being selected to be
the concertmaster of the Florida Youth Symphony Orchestra for the 3rd year in a row, her
last year to play in the group before she goes
off to college.
We are so proud of Emily and her dedication
to her God given talent. And we are thankful
that she has been so willing to share her gift
with us in worship. Her artful and expressive
playing is truly beyond her years. Thank you,
also, to her parents, Randy and Christy for
their support of Emily and her many accomplishments.
Keep up the great work Emily, and we look
forward to more musical offerings from you on
the violin and the piano during worship at
MWPC.

Markham Woods Presbyterian Church is assisting Cru Ministry this year
with a backpack drive for Seminole County Elementary Schools. We will
have a box next to the mission table in Anderson Hall with the supplies
needed or if you would rather make a monetary donation, please mark
the remittance line with “Backpack Drive.” The approximate cost for each
backpack is $25. If you choose to write a check, please give to the ushers on Sunday service or stop by Anderson hall between services July
10, 17 or 24. We will assemble the backpacks the last week of July.
