Who would have known in January that in September just after the Frankfurt motor show, VW would have drama that would make the motoring history books. Talk about cheating the customers and falsifying results. Following reports in various media I have a feeling this is just the beginning of a series of industry related drama. Just 4 days ago the Wall Street Journal reported that Volkswagen Emissions investigation has Zeroed in on two engineers. The company investigation is now focusing on two men elevated after Winterkorn was made CEO. Two top Volkswagen engineers who found they couldn’t deliver as promised a clean diesel engine for the U.S. market are at the center of a company probe into the installation of engine software designed to fool regulators, according to people familiar with the matter. The two men, Ulrich Hackenberg, Audi’s chief engineer, and Wolfgang Hatz, developer of Porsche’s Formula One and Le Mans racing engines, were among the engineers suspended in the investigation of the emissions cheating scandal that sank the company’s market value by 43% since Sept. 18 and triggered a world-wide recall to refit the enginesto meet clear-air standards, these people said. Anyway locally and in the rest of Africa, we are cool I guess we have more pressing problems than TDi engines. In this issue we look at great reviews and test drives of vehicles of all budget. It’s been an interesting few weeks and Ford has launched the ‘MEAN BEAST’ Everest onto a market that is yearning for more off road vehicles. Talk about city Bundu Bashing, yeah we do that in Harare and in every other city in Zimbabwe, not by choice off course. Mada Borerwe and I had a great time test driving the new feisty cat from Jaguar, the baby XE in Capetown. The first sedan with inginium engines that are set to define the future. The light aluminium body is also adding the oomph that all drivers are looking for. Meandering in the mountainous Franchhoek down the coastline and through the vineyards in Stellenbosch…..it was a breathtaking sight. Hyundai also launched the Tucson and it is great value for money. For those on a tight budget who need a ZIPPY about town, the new Generation i20 will be available for our Hyundai Lovers. The new Kia additions for 2016 are also something to look forward to with the Sedona and the Sportage packed with freshness. The rainy season is a few drops away so have the necessary checks done so that you have a safe drive. At least we have the fuel reduction of prices to celebrate. Till the festive issue, buckle up, read on and enjoy. 11 Fact Jeke [email protected] CONTENTS Motoring Journal Editor Fact Jeke 6/7 Auto trends 8 DIY battery care 10 Jaguar XE released motor 11 Franschhoek museum tour 12 Accessorise your ride 14 Vehicle financing 21 New Ford Mustang chassis brings 22 Aluminium efficiency OCT/NOV2015 MOTORING JOURNALBIMONTHLY Marketing Officer Nyasha Borerwe Stories Tatenda Macheka Mada Borerwe Fact Jeke Layout & Design Stanford Mayenga Printers AMH Printers Cnr Strand /Bessemer Roads Graniteside, Harare Motoring Journal is a monthly feature and the next edition will run December 2015. BY FACT JEKE A few years ago after returning to Zimbabwe, Duly’s awarded me the opportunity to test drive the then new Everest in 2010. It was an experience of a lifetime as I got to feel the built and agility of a vehicle built by a leading car manufacturer. The Ford Everest then was a monster in more ways than one and the current model year due to hit our streets promises to topple all competition and leave it looking like a poodle in a It’s a completely new vehicle inside and out with a host of features, providing great value in its segment. bulldogs space. I mean with a name like that, what do you expect. If you’re one who tends to judge books by their covers, then you’ll probably take an instant fatal attraction because its more robust than the others in its class. This vehicle is built upon the firm’s trusty Ranger bakkie platform, and has done a great job in replacing the ford Territory. From its angular profile and glut of chrome to that ungainly spare wheel housed on the back of the hatch, everything about this SUV smacks of nineties Americana. But oddly enough, no matter how much you grimace, once you actually take the Everest for a drive, you’ll find that beneath that dowdy exterior lurks an incredibly capable ma- chine that offers a whole lot of meat for the money. The large SUV market in particular continues to boom at a rate that outstrips the market as a whole by some margin. Ford reckons 29.0 per cent of its entire global sales will soon be SUVs, up from 23.0 per cent today. This vehicle is perfect for the school run, towing the boat or float, driving to that high powered meeting and going for some casual rock-hopping and mud-plugging all in the same week. Its an all rounder with capabilities that are endless. Competing directly with the Mitsubishi challenger, Chevrolet Trailblazer and the Toyota Fortuner 2016 will definitely see the battle of the rugged SUVs with the Everest conquering based on its performance and outstanding DNA….its all about DNA, genes matter. The all-new Ford Everest is set to redefine the SUV market when it is launched in Sub-Saharan Africa later this year with bold design, advanced technology, stunning off-road and on-road capability, and a refined, premium interior for up to seven passengers. “With the all-new Everest, we’re further strengthening our showroom line-up with a fully capable and competitive premium SUV that works equally well as a comfortable and refined family vehicle or taking on the roughest terrains,” says Rob Johnston, Regional Manager, Sales, Marketing, and Service, Ford Motor Company Sub-Saharan Africa. “It’s a completely new vehicle inside and out with a host of features, providing great value in its segment.” With a rugged, sculptural design that reflects its unshakeable toughness and technological prowess, the all-new Everest blends strength, smart features and style to bring consumers a tough and versatile SUV with true off-road capability. In addition to surprising and delighting fans of rugged off-road SUVs, the all-new Everest embodies Ford’s fun-to-drive DNA to deliver rewarding and dynamic on-road handling, offering no compromises on refinement and comfort. “With the all-new Everest we have truly raised the bar for this type of vehicle in design and capability, with advanced technologies for a smarter, safer and more capable vehicle,” Johnston says. One of the toughest SUVs in its segment, the all-new Everest has a true body-on-frame design, assuring the torsional strength required for challenging terrains. Together with an intelligent FORD EVEREST MOTORING JOURNAL four-wheel drive system, an active transfer case with Torque on Demand, Terrain Management System, and best-in-class ground clearance of 225 mm and water-wading capability of 800 mm, the all-new Everest helps drivers navigate difficult terrain with ease. For ultimate capability, the advanced, firstin-class Terrain Management System gives drivers four preset settings – Normal, Snow/Gravel/ Grass, Sand and Rock– that alter the vehicle’s throttle response, transmission, intelligent four-wheel drive system and traction control to confidently tackle any situation. For extreme offroad environments, drivers can manually lock the transfer case in low-range four-wheel drive mode for increased control. These impressive off-road credentials are paired to a new level of ride quality and dynamic handling beyond what consumers have come to expect in a rugged SUV. Thanks to its coil spring front and rear suspension and a Watt’s linkage on the rear axle, the all-new Everest provides a comfortable, stable ride with agile and predictable handling on the road, keeping the promise of Ford’s fun-to-drive DNA. It is one of the most technologically advanced off-road SUVs ever made, and builds on Ford’s global expertise in the utility segment. The latest generation of Ford’s in-car connectivity solution, SYNC®2, lets drivers use natural voice commands to control the car’s entertainment system, climate controls and connected mobile devices more easily than ever before. SYNC®2 also boasts an eight-inch touchscreen with colour-coded corners for easy menu navigation. Other segment-first technologies in the allnew Everest include Curve Control and Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) with Cross Traffic Alert. The vehicle also offers Roll Stability Control, Electronic Stability Programme and Active Park Assist. The incredible capabilities of the all-new Everest are made possible by Ford’s globally proven Duratorq TDCi engine family, featuring advanced technologies that improve fuel efficiency. It stands apart with a bold, sculptural design paired with a modern interior for up to seven adult occupants. Interior features balance ride comfort with ultimate practicality, including a first-in-class powered lift gate, more than 30 cleverly designed stowage spaces, multiple power outlets and flexible seating and cargo continued to page 4 M4 ZIMBABWE INDEPENDENT OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2015 MOTORING JOURNAL from page 3 arrangements – including fold-flat second- and power-fold third-row seating – to achieve a perfect balance between passenger demands and packing efficiency. Here are a few tips which will help you save the life of your battery. Lead-Acid Battery charging: Battery low on power? You might not need a replacement just yet. These recommended charging procedures can help you keep your battery operating at full power. Before charging your battery, refer to your owner’s manual and your battery charger manual for instructions. Review the safety instructions that came with your charger and battery. Remember that batteries contain sulfuric acid that can cause severe burns, and hydrogenoxygen gases that can be explosive. Observe the following guidelines when charging: • Make sure the battery terminals are clean and free from corrosion. • Do not attempt to charge a driedout battery. If needed, add distilled (or drinking) water to just above the battery plates. Do not overfill. • Refer to any written instructions provided by the battery and charger manufacturers. • Identify the positive and negative terminals of the battery and attach the correct charger leads. • If charging a battery connected to a vehicle, be sure that the vehicle’s electrical system has protection against overvoltage or be sure that the charger will not have high-charging voltages that may damage the vehicle’s electrical system. Maintenance: Storage tips The most important consideration when storing any battery is to make sure the voltage never drops below 12.4 volts. Following these simple tips on battery maintenance can help extend the life of your battery. If you are storing the battery for an extended period of time, one of the best ways to prevent damage is to make sure the voltage never drops below 12.4 volts. We recommend using a type of "battery maintainer" – a device that will monitor your battery and keep it at full potential during storage. There are two types of maintenance chargers: 1. Traditional "float" chargers, which provide constant voltage with tapering amperage to the battery even when it is fully charged. The typical floating charging voltage ranges from 13.0 to 13.8 volts. 2. Fully automatic multistage or multistep chargers, which monitor the battery and charge it as necessary. Multistage maintainers will charge at varying voltages and varying amperage. Some of these multistep chargers are also capable of working well as a battery charger. If it is not possible to use a maintenance charger, disconnect the battery from the vehicle during storage to prevent the vehicle from discharging the battery. Always provide a full charge with a battery charger prior to storage, then check the battery voltage every three to six months and charge if it falls below 12.4 volts. Also, when possible, store your battery in a cool, dry location. Other maintenance tips 1. Check your battery every now and then to make sure its terminal connections are clean, snug and protected from the elements. Signs of corrosion or leakage could mean that your battery is no longer operating as well as it should. 2. Always unplug accessories and turn off lights when your car is turned off. 3. Keep the battery in cooler places whenever possible. Heat damages batteries. 4. Scrub corrosion from the terminals with a solution of water and baking soda. 7 tips to prolong the life of your car battery There are a number of things you can do to care for your car battery and prolong its performance, saving yourself time and money. The tips below will reduce your risk of experiencing a flat battery and maximise the potential life of your battery. Have the charging rate checked at every major service. Both under and overcharging will reduce car battery life and void the warranty. Avoid draining Avoid leaving vehicle accessories on regularly as this will discharge the battery which will then require a recharge. Constant recharging may shorten the life of your battery. Keep the car battery case clean Dirt and dampness can damage your battery case and may cause your battery to lose change. Ensure the case and terminals are checked and cleaned during every major service. Secure your car battery Check that your battery is secure at all times, as vibrations can damage the battery plates. Inspect battery terminals regularly; loose connections can cause breakdowns. Don't jump start a flat car battery Don’t attempt a jump-start as it can damage the electronics in many modern cars. If you have a flat battery, contact the dealership or a service provider to come through and assist. – Additional Source: google Drive your vehicle regularly Leaving your vehicle stationary for an extended period affects your battery’s charge. To maintain the required level of charge in your battery make sure you regularly drive your vehicle. Have your engine serviced regularly Poor engine condition can overload the battery and reduce its life Check the battery charging rate Adventure loaded Fiat 500 Cabriolet THE Fiat 500 is hard to picture on African roads, (with its miniature frame on our usually not up to scratch roads) the car, is an entirely different funkified experience. There is actually a hint of sporty flair, in its small compact frame. Point is it’s a spunky vehicle will sure turn heads as you cruise on the streets of Harare. Fiat’s retro-inspired 500 have raised the stakes with the introduction of the country’s most affordable cabriolet. The Fiat 500c 1.2 undercuts the competition with a price tag of under $30 000. Despite its affordability it remains surprisingly practical, reassuringly safe and alluringly exclusive. Powered by a 1.2 Euro 4-compliant motor, it develops 51 kW at 5 500rpm and produces 102 Nm of torque at 3 000rpm. Fiat has emerged as a leader in green manufacturing and the Fiat 500c 1.2 further reaffirms that position with its lowly CO2 emissions. ZIMBABWE INDEPENDENT OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2015 M9 MOTORING JOURNAL Vehicle servicing essential BY MADA BORERWE GETTING your car serviced and maintaining it is of uttermost importance and is money well spent. Problems are likely to be caught early on when they’re cheaper to fix, and your car will have a better resale value and longer life. The current economic downturn and the resultant drop in new vehicle sales have increased the importance of extending the life time of vehicles currently in use. A well maintained car is efficient and you are likely to save on fuel costs because of its proper service history. Most drivers get tempted to miss a service and save money without realising that a hefty bill will come their way eventually. As a driver you need to get to know your car’s service manual, which has been written by the people who built and designed your car. The service manual usually indicates the service intervals of your vehicle and also explains the dashboard warning signs that can appear if anything is wrong on your car and needs to be fixed. The three kinds of services that can be done on a car are minor, middle and major services. Minor service entails the following; (5000-15000 km) • • • • • • Replacement oil Oil filter change Setting of plug gap Clean air filter Checking the brakes Checking suspension Minor service maintains lubricant and fluid levels, together with an inspection of brakes, exhaust, steering, suspension and other essential safety items. Middle service entails the following; (10000-30000km) • • • • • • • Changing engine oil and filter Check and top up all oils and fluids Check brakes Check exhaust Check transmission Check steering and suspension Check (external) engine belts and hoses • • • • • Check all lights Check tyres and pressures Check windscreen wipers and washers Battery test and printed report Safety inspection, road test and written report The middle service is more extensive it includes replacement of standard spark plugs and front wiper inserts plus an analysis of the engine management system. An engine flush treatment is done to maximise the effectiveness of the oil change and a fuel treatment to help clean the fuel system and improve performance and economy. Major service entails the following ;( 20000-40000km) Major Service incorporates all the things that are done in the middle service but special attention is placed on the following items on the vehicle; • Check drive belts and replace every (40,000km) • Replace gear box and transfer box oils • Replace front and rear axle oils and replace plug seals • Replace cooling system coolant (every 80,000km) • Check front and rear axle oil levels • Adjust hand brake ( Average seven clicks) • Report on any engine, transmission oil leaks • Inspect pads/shoes including discs and drums and record • Check function of air conditioner • Carry out diesel smoke test- for diesel engines • Replacement of timing belts every (100000-150000km) Always keep tabs on the performance of your vehicle, if you decide to buy the service kits for your vehicle use only the reputable suppliers to avoid buying counterfeits. Remember a service forfeited will eventually eat into your pocket someday. M10 ZIMBABWE INDEPENDENT OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2015 MOTORING JOURNAL Jaguar XE released BY MADA BORERWE THE new Jaguar XE is an exhibition of luxury, refinement, style and beauty. The athletic body structure of the XE immediately tells you the amount of speed and torque that the vehicle possesses before you even drive it. What I liked about the new XE is the phenomenal exterior styling which is perfectly proportional and meticulous. The new Jaguar XE Sedan is easily recognised as a Jaguar with its harmonised looks and aluminium skin formed around the funda- mental principles of perfect proportions and aerodynamic efficiency. The body structure of the XE is 75% aluminium which makes the XE light, stiff and safe. It is the only car in its class that has been built around the aluminium ‘monocoque’. One thing that Jaguar always does when designing vehicles is to pay attention to detail and both the exterior and interior styling show the amount of time that was invested in producing just the best. The entry level to the XE range features high quality luxtec seats and gloss black treatment for the door trim finishers. The interior offers outstanding levels of comfort and spaciousness. Exquisite materials and finishes combined with Jaguar craftsmanship make this a class-beating interior that’s unlike anything else in the segment. The contour-hugging front seats are mounted low – creating a sports-car like driving position – offering both heating and cooling options, and up to 14-way power adjustment. At the Centre stage is an eight-inch touchscreen that offers drivers easy access to media and navigation features, as well information displays. As I drove the new Jaguar XE in the lofty mountains of Cape town I got to have a first-hand feel of some of the advanced driver assistance systems available on the XE for example the All Surface Progress Control (ASPC) which enables the vehicle to gain traction electronically in seconds when driving on low grip surfaces such as icy roads or wet grass. Another exciting feature is a stereo camera mounted behind the front windscreen to give the XE a 3D view of the road ahead, this highly accurate data is used for functions including the lane departure warning system. Driving the XE on the meandering roads was smooth and easy because of the electronic power steering which is tuned to provide exceptional responsiveness. The new XE is built on a double wishbone front suspension which makes the car a supple ride and gives it crisp handling. It has high performing brakes which respond easily when you decide to brake. The XE is powered by a range of four- and six-cylinder petrol and diesel engines offering a blend of performance. All engines benefit from direct injection, variable valve timing and boosting to deliver clean, quiet combustion and exceptional throttle response. It has intelligent stop-start systems and the smart regenerative charging saves more fuel. Power is sent to the rear wheels through smoothshifting 6-speed manual and 8-speed automatic transmissions. The petrol engine range begins with the turbocharged, direct-injection, 2.0-litre fourcylinder unit, which delivers 177kw and 340 Nm. The XE S has an engine which provides superior performance and an exhilarating ride, this all-aluminium engine is a modular design with takes its core architecture from Jaguar’s acclaimed 5.0-litre V8. The XE S top speed is electronically limited to 250km/h and the engine performance is pegged at 250kW and 450Nm. The new XE’s adaptive cruise control (ACC) makes motorway journeys even more comfortable. Long-range 77GHz scanning radar monitors the road ahead, enabling the car to maintain a pre-set distance from vehicles in front. The ACC system can also initiate emergency braking if it detects an impending collision. I enjoyed parking the XE, the two semi- automated park assist functions did the work for me, what the ultrasonic sensors do is to measure the space where you want to park and if suitable will enable the car to steer itself during both parallel and bay parking manoeuvres. Driving out of parking spaces has been made even safer with the reverse traffic detection system. The sensors used in the blind spot monitoring system will detect approaching vehicles which may be unseen by the driver and can trigger an alert. The New Jaguar XE is a must have and will be available in Zimbabwe soon, for pricing and availability contact Manfred Chaniwa at Premier Auto Services. ZIMBABWE INDEPENDENT OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2015 M11 MOTORING JOURNAL Franschhoek Motor Museum tour BY FACT JEKE BESIDES the picturesque landscape, mountain passes and vineyards in Western Cape, there is so much more that you can enjoy especially if you are an auto enthusiasts. The Franschhoek Motor Museum offers visitors a special opportunity to look back at more than 100 years of motoring history with its unique and exciting collection of vehicles, motorcycles, bicycles and memorabilia in the magnificent setting of L’Ormarins. L’Ormarins is a vineyard with a twist where a personal collector of automobiles set out to create heaven for all this motoring. Across the length and breadth of Southern Africa, only one place can adequately portray the evolution of the automobile, The Franschhoek Motor Museum. Here is a look at what caught my eye and left me drooling and wishing we had such a museum in Zimbabwe. If you haven’t been there put it on your bucket list….you need to visit. In the late Sixties, Ford wanted to race its successful Mustang ‘Pony Car’ and approached famed racer and Cobra sports car builder Carroll Shelby to develop the car. Body-wise, frontal changes included a glass fibre bonnet with twin air scoops and pin fasteners and a larger grille. At the rear, louvres were fitted along with sequential tail-lights, a special Shelby snapopen fuel cap and big-bore tail pipes. Looking for an alpha-numeric name, Shelby paced out the distance from his workshop to the conference room and found it to be “about 350 feet”. So GT350 it was. For 1968, the car was officially known as a SHELBY COBRA GT350 as Ford wanted to publicise the Cobra name. In 1968, the GT350’s 289 cubic inch engine was replaced with Ford’s new 302 (five-litre) V8, which featured hydraulic valve lifters and a 600-cfm Holley four-barrel carburettor mounted on a high-volume intake manifold. It produced 186 kilowatts and 420 Newton-metres of torque. An engineering perfectionist, Ettore’s designs were always noted for their innovation and style. Introduced at the 1929 Paris Motor Show, the Bugatti Type 46 was a top-of-the-range model and this car is one of the earliest examples. The fabric-covered, fixed-head coupé bodywork was built by Maythron and Son of England. The distinctively narrow and rectangular 5,4-litre straight-eight engine is unusual in having a one-piece cylinder block and head casting. A three-speed gearbox is mounted in unit with the live rear axle. Rudge 32-inch wire wheels are fitted, and the brakes are cable-operated drums all round. The Type 46 was one of Bugatti’s most successful models—444 were built — and this example has had only five owners since new, remarkable is it not. JAGUAR D-Type The JAGUAR D-Type was one of the most charismatic and successful sports/racing cars ever made. Introduced in 1954, its aerodynamic shape included a distinctive tail fin to increase stability at high speed. Powering this D-Type is Jaguar’s legendary XK 3,4-litre inline six-cylinder engine that developed 186 kilowatts. The car was capable of more than 270 kilometres per hour and zero to 96 kilometres per hour took 4,7 seconds. The Belgian Ecurie Francorchamps team bought the car prior to it being works-prepared for the 1956 Le Mans 24Hour where it finished fourth, a feat repeated in 1957. In the following years it took part in many sporting events in Europe before being shipped to Japan for the inaugural race meeting at Suzuka. This rare short-nosed car eventually returned to Britain where for many years it was proudly displayed at Jaguar’s Browns Lane factory. M12 ZIMBABWE INDEPENDENT OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2015 MOTORING JOURNAL Accessorise your ride BY MADA BORERWE ACCESSORISING your vehicle not only enhances its appearance but it is a way of showing off your unique style, by accessorising your car the resale value goes up. We have put together a shopping guide of some of the vehicle accessories available on the market and their advantages: Alloy wheels refer to any wheels made from a combination of aluminium and small traces of other metals. Aluminium combined with these other metals creates a supremely strong and lightweight wheel. Alloy wheels are incredibly durable and weigh less giving the car more brake clearance. Most people purchase a set of alloy wheels because they enhance the appearance of their vehicles, but there are many other benefits to having them on a car. A lighter wheel also makes it easier for the car to accelerate, and this can give drivers a small increase in fuel mileage. Alloy wheels disperse heat better, and this decreases cracking and bending. Better dispersion also translates to more efficient braking. Additionally, many alloy wheels have spokes designed to let air flow freely around the rest of the tyre, and this helps cool the brakes. Because alloy wheels are a huge investment, owners should take time to clean and maintain the wheels on a regular basis. Bull Bars able for trucks or 4x 4vehicles and are installed at the front end of the car making it stronger, more protected and also giving the vehicle better clearance. The other advantage of installing a bull bar on your vehicle is that when you are involved in an accident the vital components of the vehicle are not damaged like the fans and the radiator. There are two types of bull bars which are aluminium and steel. Steel bull bars are a bit heavy and before installing them on your vehicle your suspension has to be checked first to ensure that it can sustain the weight of the bull bar. However steel bull bars are strong and durable and can withstand any pressure that is mounted on them. Aluminium bull bars are lighter and when it comes to installation you do not need to worry about your suspension. Alloy bull bars require constant polishing and just like the steel bull bars, they are also strong and durable and protect your car from any damages that might occur in the event of a collision. As a safety feature on your vehicle, bull bars are the most ideal way of preventing deformations on your front end components. SALE Roof Rack If you are looking at increasing storage space on your vehicle then the roof rack is the accessory you need. It is a rack that provides additional storage and space and allows the secure transfer of bulky items such as bags and large containers. It can also support the transfer of sporting equipment such as bikes and canoes. A roof rack makes it possible to carry a variety of things on the top of your car and these vary in sizes depending on the size of the vehicle. Roof racks can be used for commercial and personal use and the commercial racks are much stronger to allow them to carry heavy equipment. The rack that is suitable to a given vehicle is selected not just on the basis of the vehicle's size but you should take into consideration whether there are already attachment points to which a roof rack may be fastened. The general form of a roof rack is some kind of support, which attaches to the roof. This holds load bars that actually carry the load. When driving on the road tyres are constantly coming in contact with rocks, mud, tar, water and other elements that are found on the road. When this happens all the nasty dirt and grime splatter on the body paint of your vehicle which over time will start to corrode the paint and metal on your car creating rust which will slowly corrode the frame of your car. Installation of mud guards will prevent this from happening by creating a barrier between the tyres and the wheel well which protects the paint. Mud guards are also beneficial in the rainy season and also come in handy to those who drive in gravel or sandy roads. It will be a night mare to imagine that the previous owner of the car you purchased was a potato farmer who loved to use the back seat as a trailer to carry his produce. People want the peace of mind that comes with the new car, the new smell and the vehicle warranty. Just like purchasing a stand or a house vehicle financing can be an annoyance to anyone who wants to buy a new car. Though the culture of vehicle financing is long gone in Zimbabwe some banks still offer it and it might be one avenue to explore. With the emerging phenomenon of the grey imports that has hit the country like a storm in the past years, Zimbabweans are meant to believe that purchasing one grey import is like buying a new car. Vehicle financing is the fastest and easiest way to buy a new car. This way allows you to buy your new car by paying only a small down payment up front and the rest in monthly installments. Stanbic Bank is one of the few financial institutions offering vehicle financing in Zimbabwe. Ownership is transferred once the instalments are paid in full. One key thing to note is once you get vehicle finance the car is leased to you up until you pay up to certain amount with the average warranty edging it out in longevity. The average car loan length is around 5 years, or 60 months. The average warranty on a new car is 3 years, or 36 months. This means that if anything happens to your vehicle after the three year warranty you will have to foot the bill on your own. The people that refer to cars only by their colors and amount of doors are usually the ones that get fleeced by dealers without considering that their money is better spent on the second hand market, so it literally pays to be well-informed when getting vehicle finance. A good second hand will still be relatively new with low milleage, but the first owner would have eaten the larger portion of the depreciation. This means that when you're done with the car, you can likely sell it for near the purchase price, and you can then put that money towards something even better. There is absolutely no reason why you should lose a substantial amount of money when buying a car, since it is a lifestyle choice, not something that can potentially bring your lifestyle to a grinding halt, or even something that should put a dent in living life the way you want. A car should not be a hindrance to financial success, it should be the vehicle that gets you from point A to point B. Therefore one should be very careful when dealing with vehicle financing, being cautious and looking for a car that suits you not a car that you would want to sell after a year. Its available on the 5 speed automatic transmission mated to a 3.0 litre D–TEQ turbo charged diesel engine. The new KB 250 fleet side; Extended and Double cabs are models designed for the business users who value the KBs workhorse credentials. I was fascinated by the technological advancements in both these workhorses which are secondary to the users but give the bakkie a bit of flair and style. For example the useful features such as a radio/ CD with blue tooth enabled sound system for easy phone integration. The work horse models are powered by an upgraded high output version of the 2.5 litre D–TEQ engine which is now rated at 100kw and 320Nm. The improved torque characteristics also enabled the payload of the single cab Fleet side model to be increased to a class-leading 1 221 kilograms making the pick up more than a 1 tonner. The upgraded 250 DTEQ engine comes with high output of 100kW/320 Nm which replaces the low output version across the range. The base models come with height adjustable steering and the LE-grade and double cabs are equipped with Cruise Control operated from new leatherclad steering wheel. The LE and LX models have new cloth trimmings and stability control. Each Isuzu KB is purpose built for a clearly defined role and has been tested to cope effortlessly when driven in any terrain. Safety has become a priority for most car manufacturers and the Isuzu LE, LX models and the two new Fleet side models are equipped with Electronic Stability Control (ESC). The base models are fitted with two frontal air bags for the driver and passenger and the top of the range LX models are fitted with six air bags; two frontal; two seat sides and two curtain sides. The Isofix Child Seat anchors are featured on the rear seats of the double cab models. Apart from occupant safety, Isuzu has placed a high priority on improving pedestrian safety levels. The front bumper is manufactured from polypropylene material and is designed to lessen pedestrian injuries in the event of an impact by firstly absorbing a lot of the impact energy and then lifting the pedestrian up over the bonnet rather than forcing the body down under the vehicle. Polycarbonate headlamp covers have a higher resistance to shattering on impact and less of a tendency to cause severe lacerations generally associated with glass covers. In the next few weeks look out for these new upgraded models which will be available on the local market. For pricing and additional information contact Auto World your local Isuzu dealer. ZIMBABWE INDEPENDENT OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2015 M17 MOTORING JOURNAL VW emissions, does Zimbabweans have to worry? BY TATENDA MACHEKA VERY few people will forget the 87 days BP Gulf of Mexico oil spill five years ago, it had a huge impact to the environment making it the biggest unintentional offshore oil spill in the history of the petroleum industry. Five years later this still haunts the Oil conglomerate. Recently the disappearance of the Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 left an interminable foot print on the company and it will haunt them for many years. Though the two companies might have done well in public relations to effect damage control profit and revenues will clearly show the results. The people’s car will always be remembered as a car invented to assist the ordinary man on the street Martin Winterkorn resigns as VW CEO, Toyota had gas pedal problems and GM ignition switch issues which killed people, and CEOs never resigned. News reaching the world a fortnight ago that the largest global car manufacturer lied on emissions was one of the biggest disaster the company ever faced since its inception in 1937. The matter escalated to the point that Martin Winterkorn, the former chief executive of Volkswagen, announced that he is to resign following the scandal surrounding the emissions of its diesel cars. In a statement issued by the company Winterkorn said he was "shocked by the events of the past few days." Just like the BP Shell and Malaysian airline crisis someone had to take responsibility Winterkorn is not aware of what the future holds for his former company. The global media has been awash with news that US has stopped the selling of the VW diesel cars as well as Switzerland. The issues of being environmentally friend has been one of the most topical issues around the globe and it’s close to impossible to will the battle. Yet the Germany Company decides to go ahead and lied about it. Former Porsche CEO Matthias Müller who was named the new CEO of Volkswagen Group has a big task ahead of him and should borrow a leave from the two world humanitarian crises that plunged the world into mourning recently. Assurance from VW Website review that, “Owners of these vehicles do not need to take any action at this time. Once we have information regarding a remedy, consumers will be notified. “We understand that owners of the cars affected by the emissions compliance issues are upset. We ask our valued customers for their patience as we address this issue as quickly as we can.You may have noticed that we have stopped advertising our latest TDI models. We did this as an interim step while we seek the government approvals that will allow us to offer our 2.0L 4-cylinder TDI models for sale”. VW pledged their commitment of making this right and preventing it from ever happening again. “We will bring these TDI vehicles into compliance with the federal and state emissions regulations, Along with our parent company, Volkswagen AG, we are committed to do what must be done, and begin to restore your trust,” they reassured. The vehicles included in the notifications include: • VW Jetta TDI (Model Years 2009 – 2015) • VW Jetta SportWagen TDI (Model Years 2009-2014) • VW Golf TDI (Model Years 2010-2015) • VW Golf SportWagen TDI (Model Year 2015) • VW Beetle TDI and VW Beetle Convertible TDI (Model Years 2012-2015) • VW Passat TDI (Model Years 2012-2015) But the question is how does this affect Zimbabwean driving these models . In an interview Byron Muzovaka an owner of a VW Ammarock TDI said even if his car is recalled he won’t relinguish it. “Nothing much is going to happen, remember this is a third world market the respect on pollutions are not tighter than here, I will not relinquish this car even if there is a recall,” he added. CFAO Motors is the exclusive distributor of Volkswagen AG products in Zimbabwe and one of the biggest in Africa. Offering the Polo hatch and sedan, Tiguan diesel and petrol, Touareg 3.0 TDI and the CC with 1.8 turbo petrol motor. In an interview with CFAO Motors Zimbabwe Group Marketing Manager Lindsay Ehrich reviewed that the complains are coming from the European and American markets. “We have not received any complaints from our customers, the emissions problem were identified in the American and European markets and besides the emission polices here are not as rigorous as there are elsewhere,” Lindsay added that the current economic environment has not spared CFAO but quickly pointed out that the importation of grey imports has not affected them “Generally the motoring industry is facing a difficult patch sales are 12% down than the prior year while there are 50% lower than 2015… bemoaned Lindasy who dinned that the second hand imports are of no influence to their brand, “...our target market is that which purchases new vehicles we do services, parts and vehicles,”. Though VW is a tried and trusted brand it has less impact than Zimbabwe’s southern neighbour. This unpopularity coupled with the depleting economic environment will mean less impact on the sales of the VW in Zimbabwe. The emission scandal will lapse into the clouds without anyone even noticing. M18 ZIMBABWE INDEPENDENT OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2015 MOTORING JOURNAL Mucky outlook for global oil prices- good news to local car owners BY SHEILA MCKINLEY WITH the majority of economic indicators in Zimbabwe pointing to a dim economic outlook, a lot of businesses and individuals have engaged into survival mode ahead of growth. Sectors which are key in terms of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) contribution, such as agriculture and mining continue to be in dire straits. In agriculture, for instance, erratic rainfall patterns, shortage of inputs for farmers persist to be the main impediments for growth and as far as the mining sector is concerned, the ever warning commodity prices remain as an the albatross around the sectors neck. Albeit these bedevilling developments, local car owners are smiling all the way to the filling stations on the back of a decline in global oil prices (Figure 1). Figure 1: Global Brent Spot Prices- Jan 14 to Sept 15 Source: Energy Information Administration The global oil industry has experienced a lot of historical booms and busts and the current decline in prices has left a lot of oil companies recording losses, thus propelling then to cut investments in exploration and production. According to Krauss C, (2015), the price of a barrel of oil, has been cut roughly in half since June 2014, reaching levels last seen during the depths of the 2009 recession. The current price is pegged at around $48 per barrel, leading to the question, why has the price of oil plummeted so fast. The decline in oil prices can be chiefly attributed to the supply and demand dynamics of the oil industry. As Figure 2 shows, the United States (U.S.) is the current largest oil producer in the world and its domestic production has been rising since 2010. The rapid increase in production meant that the U.S. had to look for other markets for its oil and other countries that used to export to the U.S such as Nigeria and Saudi suddenly began competing for Asian markets - forcing producers to drop prices. Other countries such Iraqi and Russia have also witnessed a surge in oil production and exports. Despite the increase in supply, events on the demand side have been predominantly negative. Economic growth prospects in Europe and some developing countries remain murky and the go green concept in car designs is taking a centre stage. The slowdown in China is also exacerbating the situation. Another factor is the persistent unwillingness of the Organization of the Petroleum Figure 2: Top Ten Counties by Oil Supply (Thousand Barrels Per Day) COUNTRY 2010 2011 2012 2013 2014 United States Saudi Arabia Russia China Canada United Arab Emirates Iran Iraq Brazil Mexico 9,696 10,908 10,294 4,371 3,442 2,813 4,243 2,403 2,712 2,979 10,128 11,467 10,410 4,389 3,597 3,214 4,214 2,629 2,685 2,960 11,119 11,841 10,595 4,459 3,856 3,398 3,518 2,987 2,652 2,941 12,343 11,702 10,764 4,543 4,073 3,441 3,192 3,058 2,694 2,915 13,973 11,624 10,853 4,572 4,383 3,471 3,375 3,371 2,950 2,812 World 88,117 88,536 90,462 90,904 93,097 Source: Energy Information Administration Exporting Countries (OPEC), a cartel of oil producers, to intervene to stabilize markets in a bid to reduce the oversupply. (OPEC) was founded in Baghdad, Iraq, with the signing of an agreement in September 1960 by five countries namely Islamic Republic of Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Venezuela. Prices of OPEC’s benchmark crude oil have fallen about 50 percent since the organization declined to cut production at a 2014 meeting in Vienna. Iran, Venezuela and Algeria have been pressing the cartel to cut production to firm up prices, but Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and other gulf allies are refusing to do so according to Krauss C, (2015). Back home, any motorist can testify that fuel prices have dropped by almost 15%. A litre of petrol, for example, is now pegged at around $1.33 from as high as $1.54. Households will likely spend less on fuelling cars this year as consumers around the world are also enjoying similar benefits since fuel costs eat up a considerable share of the limited earnings of consumers in Zimbabwe. The outlook for oil prices is not looking good, thanks to new drilling by the U.S in the Gulf of Mexico. An increase in oil supply in the U.S., combined with weakening expectations for the global economy and world oil consumption, will likely push oil prices further lower in in the short to medium term, setting a positive tone for local car owners to cheer up. M20 ZIMBABWE INDEPENDENT OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2015 MOTORING JOURNAL Turbocharged & best selling sedan Chevrolet Cruze BY FACT JEKE THE Chevrolet Cruze Hatch and Sedan ranges in Sub - Saharan Africa have been given new life with the addition of turbocharged derivatives of both body styles. The last two years had so many exciting additions in the Chevrolet offering giving more to the driving experience. Marking the first time turbocharged Chevrolets have been made available, the new turbo models also usher in minor detail upgrades and a refreshed model line-up. Test driving the Cruze Hatch in Pretoria at the Gerotek Testing Facility, I was more than impressed with the power output and handling of this vehicle. When you talk of a vehicle being in charge, this is exactly the definition. Driving down a 7.5km meandering track formula one style, speed testing was a breeze. The manual transmission is so smooth and as you pick up speed and move up gears there is no doubt in how far and fast you can push it. Personally for me it was a great learning exercise because I got to experience defensive driving skills and I also got to beat the boys on the track……. Forming part of General Motors’ global powertrain portfolio, the 1.4-litre tur- Chevrolet Cruze bocharged ECOTEC petrol engine now makes its way into Cruze models after proven use in other GM products the world over. Producing 103 kW between 4 900 and 6 000 rpm along with 200 Nm of torque between 1 850 ad 4 900 rpm, the smooth engine not only provides for an enhanced driving experience in both Cruze body styles, but also benefits in the fuel efficiency and carbon emissions stakes. Featuring standard start/stop technology, the four-cylinder unit has a dual overhead camshaft with variable valve timing and a multi-point injection fuel system. Featured in the Chevrolet Cruze 1.4T LS Sedan and Cruze 1.4T LS Hatch models, the new powertrain returns average combined fuel economy of 5.8-litres per 100 km, with corresponding CO2 emissions of 135 g/km each. Both models also come standard with a six-speed manual gearbox with gear ratios perfectly matched to the turbocharged engine, further ensuring optimal efficiency. This engine delivers performance comparable to units of a larger displacement while requiring less fuel and producing a smaller carbon footprint. The safety architecture of the local Cruze sedan and hatch models is based on the original design which has earned top five-star safety ratings from both Euro NCAP and the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). To help the driver avoid accidents, the Cruze comes packed with advanced active safety systems which include: Electronic Stability Control (ESC), which helps the driver maintain control in challenging driving situations and keeps the vehicle heading in the intended direction. It also enables more precise, controlled anti-lock braking performance as well as exceptional traction and steering stability. Traction Control which limits wheel spin when one or both of the front drive wheels begin to lose traction. Four-channel Antilock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD). The latter proportions brake pressure during braking. In the case of an accident occurring, the Chevrolet Cruze 1.4T has front and rear crush zones engineered to collapse in a controlled fashion and maintain the integrity of the cabin. A collapsible pedal assembly also reduces the risk of injuries to the driver’s legs and feet during moderate-to-severe impacts. All Cruze LS and LT models are equipped with five threepoint seatbelts and six standard airbags. Safety seats for children can be secured using the ISOFIX anchoring system on the two rear outboard positions. Along with the introduction of the new turbocharged powertrain, Chevrolet Cruze sedan and hatch models have both been given specification updates, further enhancing the value added by the new engine. Striking and optional new 17-inch alloy wheels update the exterior looks of the 1.4T LS models, along with slight design upgrades which include LED side indicators integrated into the door mirrors on all models and a chrome belt line on the Hatch. Two new colours are also available – Mars Stone Blue and Blue Sapphire. Other standard equipment applicable to LS and LT-spec models includes one-touch up/down driver and front passenger windows, while LS-specific options include leather upholstery, a sunroof and the ‘Driver’s Pack’ which incorporates automatic climate control and rear parking sensors. New model changes notwithstanding, the entry level 1.6 Sedan now also benefits from the addition of ESC – something the rest of the Cruze range still enjoys. The introduction of turbocharged Cruze models to the range sees the new Cruze 1.4T LS Sedan and Hatch derivatives replacing the existing 1.8 LS Sedan and Hatch models. Supported by the Cruze 1.6 Sedan, 1.6 LS Sedan, 1.6 LS Hatch, 2.0D LS Sedan and the range topping 2.0D LT Sedan models, the two hatchback derivatives and five sedan derivatives complete a seven-model range in South Africa, with keen pricing and value for money still a strong Cruze selling point. Autoworld can assist with pricing and availability. Middle managers or small hatch back fans can buy this vehicle for a memorable driving experience. –Additional Source: Quickpic & GM SSA ZIMBABWE INDEPENDENT OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2015 M21 MOTORING JOURNAL Born and raised on the track – the all new Ford Mustang BY FACT JEKE THE highly anticipated Ford Mustang is one step closer to being launched in right-hand drive sub-Saharan Africa markets with the local debut of the stylish Mustang Cabriolet at Go Further Africa 2015, and the sophisticated Fastback previewed last year. Loaded with innovative technologies and delivering high levels of performance and style, the new Mustang is the next chapter in the life of one of the world’s most iconic cars. April 17, 2014 marked the 50th anniversary of the introduction of the original Ford Mustang, but Mustang’s impact goes well beyond the 9 million-plus cars sold in its 50 years of continuous production. The Ford Mustang has made thousands of appearances in film, television, music and video games, and is the world’s most-liked vehicle on Facebook. Design and performance are two of the essential attributes that have made Mustang appeal to millions of fans for five decades. “Ford Mustang inspires passion like no other car,” says Rob Johnston, Regional Manager, Sales, Marketing, and Service, Ford Motor Company - sub-Saharan Africa. “The visceral look, sound and performance of Mustang resonates with people, even if they’ve never driven one. Mustang is definitely more than just a car — it is the heart and soul of Ford.” With 320kW and 536Nm on tap, the 5.0-litre V8 fastback model with six-speed manual transmission reaches 100 km/h from a standing start in 4.8 seconds — making this the fastest Ford ever in SSA. The Mustang’s all-new 2.3 EcoBoost engine uses direct injection, variable cam timing and turbocharging to deliver plenty of usable performance across a broad RPM range. A unique intake manifold and turbocharger housing enable it to produce the performance Mustang drivers expect with a 0-100km sprint time of 5.8 sec, linked to exceptional fuel economy. It delivers up to 8.0 l/100km fuel efficiency and 179 g/km CO2 emissions.* “This EcoBoost engine delivers where a Mustang driver expects it to, with a broad, flat torque curve that pours out when you stand on it for easy passing or hustling down a twisty road,” said Dave Pericak, Ford Mustang chief engineer. The clean-sheet design of both Mustang Fastback and Convertible evokes the essential character of the brand, retaining key design elements — including the long sculpted hood and short rear deck —with contemporary execution. Several key design features define the new Mustang, including: • A lower, wider stance with a reduction in roof height, and wider rear fenders and track • The Mustang Fastback with a sleeker profile enabled by more steeply sloped windshield and rear glass • Three-dimensional, tri-bar tail lamps • Contemporary execution of the signature shark-bite front fascia and trapezoidal grille The 2015 Mustang has the most capable brake line-up ever offered on a Mustang, as the new double-ball-joint front MacPherson strut system enables the use of larger, more powerful brakes. The information and controls an active driver needs are all readily accessible in the aviation-inspired cockpit, which is executed with the highest degree of craftsmanship ever found in a Mustang. The new Mustang sets new handling benchmarks for the brand, delivering world-class dynamics and ride quality. Large, clear instrumentation puts vehicle information right in front of the driver in the roomier cabin, while improved ergonomics and tactile switches and knobs provide better control. The new Mustang features a significant amount of innovative technologies providing drivers with enhanced information, control and connectivity when they want it. From Intelligent Access with push-button start to SYNC®2 and MyKey in every Mustang built, plus with standard Track Apps, drivers will be able to customize their time behind the wheel. Giants like Ford have gone the aluminium arguing that it is stronger and will means less weight and less fuel consumption. Recently this publication had a chance to feel the new Jaguar XE with the aluminium chassis. The innovative new Jaguar XE will redefine the standard in its segment. Designed around Jaguar’s modular vehicle architecture, the XE is the only car in the class to use an aluminium-intensive monocoque, with lightweight aluminium accounting for 75 per cent of the structure. This milestone in body engineering, a product of Jaguar’s world-leading expertise in high-volume production of aluminium vehicles, ensures that the Jaguar XE combines outstanding design with benchmark levels of ride and handling — it will be the true driver’s car in the segment when it launches locally, in September. Lightweight construction is a core element of Jaguar’s DNA and Jaguar is at the cutting-edge of aluminium technology in the automotive industry. The Jaguar XJ, XK and F-TYPE have all been developed using exceptionally stiff bonded and riveted aluminium structures. The XE is the latest model to use this aerospace-inspired technology. It is also the first car in the world to make use of a new grade of high strength aluminium called RC5754 which has been developed specifically for the XE. This new alloy features a high level of recycled material and makes a significant contribution to Jaguar’s goal of using 75 percent recycled material by 2020. The resultant weight savings ensure that the XE is the most fuel-efficient Jaguar yet. With its 2.0-litre i4 turbo diesel engine, producing 132kW and 430Nm, it boasts a combined fuel consumption figure of 4.2 litres/100km and CO2 emissions of only 109g/km. These low emissions also place it below the South African government’s carbon tax threshold of 120g/km, and thus buyers can avoid having to pay additional carbon taxes. “The Jaguar XE body uses over 75% aluminium content, which far exceeds any other car in its class. This gives us a body structure with unrivalled low weight: it’s light but also immensely strong with extremely high levels of torsional stiffness. We’ve made sure our aluminium-intensive body structure exceeds all global safety standards without compromising on vehicle design or refinement,” says Dr Mark White, Jaguar’s Chief Technical Specialist for lightweight vehicle structures. Even with beautiful, eye-catching lines, the Jaguar XE’s aluminium-intensive body structure still offers exceptional torsional stiffness. Lightweight, yet strong, it incorporates highly advanced suspension systems to deliver unparalleled levels of ride quality, handling and steering. Rainy season driving tips With the rainy season approaching, its important that we do the last minute checks before we embark on that road trip or even our day–to–day drive from the house to the office. First stop is the tyres. Always check your tyres before you embark on a journey. Make sure you do the following routine maintenance: keep all tyres properly inflated. The correct air pressure for your tyres is specified by the vehicle manufacturer and can be found on the vehicle door edge, doorpost, and glove box door or fuel door. This is very crucial, every vehicle owner or driver has to be aware of this. The number listed on the side of the tyre is not the recommended air pressure for your tyre but the maximum air pressure for the tyre. You should check your tyres air pressure at least once a month. The tyre tread depth is also important and has to be checked on a regular as well, proper tread depth will help prevent skids. During the rainy season, there is no need to behave like Lewis Hamilton on the track, watch your speed. As the rain falls, it mixes with grime and oil on the road creating slippery conditions perfect for skids. The best way to avoid skidding is to slow down. Driving at a slower pace allows more of the tyre tread to make contact with the road, which leads to better traction. You need to keep your distance from the car ahead. Wet weather driving demands gentle use of all the main controls, your steering, clutch, brake and accelerator and a larger allowance for errors and emergencies. All motorists should regularly check that their headlights, rear light, brake lights and turn indicators are working properly. It takes about three times longer to brake on wet roads than on dry tar so your brakes should be in good working order. As more distance is required to brake, it is important not to tailgate. Keep more than two car lengths between you and the vehicle in front of you. If the rains become too heavy, stop. Heavy rains can overload the wiper blades allowing an almost continuous sheet of water to flow over the screen. When visibility is so limited that the edges of the road or other vehicles cannot be seen at a safe distance, it is time to pull over and wait for the safest time to drive. Keep your headlights on and turn on your hazard warning lights to alert other drivers. Turn on your headlights even when there is a light rain. It helps you to see the road and, more importantly, it helps other motorists to see you. However don’t blast your high beams in the rain or fog, it will obscure your view further as the light will reflect back at you off the water droplets in the air. If your car is equipped with fog lights you may find it helpful to turn these on as they throw a little extra light on the road while making your car easier to see. As rain quickly causes your windshield to fog up, switch on both front and rear defrosters if your car is equipped with those or just turn on your air-conditioning. This will help save your life and that of others.
