Zuma calls on all people
to enjoy media access
President Jacob Zuma has
urged the media industry to
ensure access to the media is
enjoyed by all in the country
including the poor and the
working class.
“This entails ensuring that
media products reflect the
lives of the majority and that
they have the space to share
their dreams, successes and
hardships, accurately and
without prejudice,” President
Zuma said.
He encouraged media
to produce products that
inspire and build the country
and also to provide the youth
with role models around
whom they can build their
lives.
Last month President
Zuma addressed editors and
senior journalists in Pretoria
as part of the commemoration of national Press
Freedom Day.
BLACK WEDNESDAY
The event commemorated
Black Wednesday, October
19 1977 when the apartheid
regime clamped down on the
media, banning newspapers
the World and Weekend and
jailing journalists.
President Zuma emphasised the importance of
information by saying that
it was powerful and citizens
needed information to go
about their daily lives.
“They need to know about
government services and
where and how to access
them,” President Zuma said.
He told the media that
government was also playing
its role to further promote
access to information to the
poor who are not covered by
commercial media, through
the government newspaper
Vukuzenzele which reaches
more than one million people
a month.
by SA NEWS
[email protected]
“We fought hard and
relentlessly to have a South
Africa where all enjoy these
rights and freedoms.
“Therefore, our commitment to freedom of expression, a free media and all
the freedoms enshrined in
our Constitution remains
steadfast,” President Zuma
added.
He reflected on what
happened on October 19 1977
when the apartheid regime
clamped down on the media,
banning two newspapers,
the World and Weekend
World.
“They arrested the editor,
the late Percy Qoboza and
other journalists who were
courageously exposing
crimes against humanity
that were perpetrated by the
regime.
“The clampdown took
place in the climate of
repression that had followed
the June 16 uprising and the
horrific and unforgivable
murder of Bantu Steven Biko
in police custody in September 1977,” he said.
Scores of activists were
banned and arrested while
others fled South Africa and
opted for a life in exile.
DEMOCRATIC ORDER
When South Africa was
crafting a new democratic
order it determined that
never again would the nation
witness the harassment of
the media such as that which
occurred on October 19 1977.
President Zuma updated
the media on the status
of the Protection of State
Information Bill saying it
was under consideration and
various inputs and legal opinions were being processed.

0% INCREASE IN
STUDENT FEES
IN 2016 - ZUMA
P
resident Jacob Zuma
had used last month’s
meeting with student
leaders, vice-chancellors and
chairpersons of university
councils to gain a first-hand
account from students about
issues that are of concern to
them and which affect their
capacity to learn.
The President meted with the
stakeholders following violent
protests by students across the
country against fee increments
by SA NEWS

for next year.
“A proposed increase in university fees has angered students,
given the financial difficulties
faced by students from poor
households.
University fees are determined
by universities independently
of government due to
their legal status,
which makes
these institutions autonomous.”
He also listened to the leadership of the universities on their
views on the matters, said the
Presidency.
Thousands of students
marched on the Union Buildings
where the meeting took place.
President Zuma has welcomed
the gathering of students.
He confirmed that there will be
a 0% increment in student fees
next year.
REBECCA FALLEN VICTIM TO A SCAM
Well-known artist and Queen of
Gospel Rebecca Malope has fallen
victim to a scam by fraudsters who
hacked into her WhatsApp service,
demanding money from other people.
This came after Malope visited
Vodaworld shop in Midrand to get a
new phone last month.
“I went to get a new phone because
the one I had been using had a wornout screen.
“I got a new phone and asked them
if I could use the same number. They
agreed and transferred all my contacts to the new phone.”
But after leaving the shop, Malope
said she received a call from one of
the consultants saying that another
customer came to the store after she
left and wanted to do a SIM swap to

use her number.
“They said they refused to give that
guy my number because it’s mine. But
the following day my new phone just
said ‘emergency calls only’ and on the
same day, my daughter alerted me
about my WhatsApp.”
“She said I’ve been demanding
money, as much as R4 000. Apparently I urgently needed the money for bail
from jail because I was arrested by
police after I drove past a red robot.”
Malope said the culprits were
allegedly swearing and hurling insults
at people who refused to give them
money. Even her friends in neighbouring countries have complained about
her demands.
“People I know in Swaziland are
asking what’s wrong with me because I don’t speak that way.”
Malope said her efforts to get
Vodacom to cancel the number
had been futile.
“I pleaded with them to cancel
the number altogether . But
they haven’t done so. I guess
this means Vodacom doesn’t
really care about its customers
because they haven’t done
anything to help me.”
Tsepo Ramodibe of Vodacom said they were investigating the matter.
Police could not confirm
that Malope had laid a
charge.

A Good
Name
T
MY OPINION
Mthuthuzeli Mbola
he one defining characteristic we all share,
the one unique and
profound element of each
and one of us is the NAME
we are given.
From the reason to why we
were given such a name and the
significance of what a name represent. Our name, beyond it’s objective and purpose encompasses
what and who each of us is.
What is the significance of a
name?
The name has an ability to
confer affluence and reputation
(what people think you are)
If one person has a famous
name, they tend to be treated
with respect and honour. In the
same breath, if their name has
been associated with ill-repute,
they will be treated with disrespect.
To Hebrews a name is not a
label, or a tool to distinguish one
another. A person name is viewed
as equivalent to the person
himself. A person’s name signifies
their person, worth, character,
reputation, authority, will and
ownership.
Therefore lets be eager to
obtain a good name as the Bible
states in Ecclessiates 7:1
A good name is better than an
expensive perfume.

The judges alluded that
the standard of the competition had heightened
compared to last year.
In making the difficult
decision, judges Mrs Ruth

winner was Zuko Koloyi.
Zuko said he could not
believe his ears when he
was announced as the

He said, “Sisi I have no

When the reporter
