Grand Knight Article
We had the Auto Show Coat Check fundraiser
event in January and it certainly was a lot of
work. It is so gratifying to see that so many
brothers, wives and family members were willing to step forward to help the council with
this major fundraiser. Many of these kind
folks worked several days at the auto show.
We will be getting an accounting of what our
cut of the proceeds from the fundraiser was in
the near future and we will also thank the volunteers by name. But for now, please know
your efforts are greatly appreciated.
February brings the end of football season and
means it is time for our annual Super Bowl
Party. The Super Bowl Party will be taking
place in our member’s lounge starting at 2PM
on Sunday, February 5th. There will be great
food, fun and football. We will also be raffling
off a big screen TV, so stop on by and enjoy
the day.
We would also like to thank Jerry Nowakowski
for volunteering and bartending on Sunday’s
during this past football season. This gave us
a great opportunity for some Fraternity, one of
our guiding principles. This proved to be quite
popular and quite a few brothers stopped in to
watch our much-improved Detroit Lions and
spend some time with our friends.
We will also be having a St. Patrick’s Day Party on Saturday, March 17th, which is always a
good time.
There are a few big events coming up in March
as well. On March 3rd we will have another
Vegas Night. On the last weekend in March,
we will have our annual Tootsie Roll Drive to
raise funds for mentally handicapped youth in
our community.
The Tootsie Roll drive is our leading community outreach project and last year we raised
over $18,000 that was donated to non-profits
in our community. We will be counting on
your help and involvement to once again make
a significant difference in our community.
GK message continued:
St. Daniel Parish Roundtable Report
Time and time again, we see brothers and wives
step forward to give generously of themselves to
help their council, the churches we serve and
our communities. This helps us build new
friendships and better our world and carry on
the proud tradition of service the Knights of Columbus are known for worldwide.
On Sunday February 5, 2011 we will be having a NEW MEMBER DRIVE at St. Daniels.
If you know any Catholic men who believe in
the importance of investing time in the Catholic Church, friendship, helping others, please
encourage them to join the Knights of Columbus.
Vivat Jesus,
Kevin Wisely

Note from the Building Corporation:
The Building Corporation has interviewed a handful
of real estate brokers to handle the listing of our
Knights of Columbus Council Hall for sale. We reported in the December newsletter that after long
and deliberate review we have come to the conclusion that with declining council revenues we can no
longer afford to run our Council Hall. After reviewing a handful of proposals from brokers, we have
listed our hall for sale with Signature Associates.
The Building Corporation will continue to run Bingo, rent the hall for events such as weddings and to
run Fish Fry Dinners to keep revenue coming in. We
will continue to pay necessary expenses to keep the
building running.
Anyone interested in finding out what is going on
with this is welcome to attend our Building Corporation meetings. These take place at 6PM on the
first Thursday of each month.
After each mass there will be coffee and donuts in the Cushing Center, all are invited.
Brother Knights will be in the Cushing Center
after all masses to answer questions and accept applications for membership.
If you would like more information prior to
February 5, please contact Bob Reinelt

St. Patty’s Party
March 3rd
Our Next Poker for Priests will be held on Wednesday,
February 25th. Our Council hosts a card party for the
retired priests and brothers at Colombiere Center in
Clarkston. We deal blackjack and poker and it has become a popular event for the retired priests and brothers.
If you would like to help with this project in the future,
please let me know. You will leave there uplifted. Normally, the card games last about an hour and a half and run
from 6PM to 7:30PM. If you arrive a bit earlier, they will
feed you too. Cliff Holmyard, [email protected] or 248--701--8711.
Thank you to Clff Holmyard, Jim Longbucco and Rick
Wolfe for manning this project on December 28th.

Ladies Auxiliary – February 2012
Greetings! It is the month of love, as well as the
Superbowl (coincidence? I don’t think so!) The Ladies
Auxiliary got some love from Home Instead Senior Care,
who presented us with a plaque noting our participation
in the Be a Santa to a Senior program, which is run by
our own Nancy Wasilk! This past Christmas was the
second year we volunteered our time to help wrap gifts
for seniors in our community. It is always a fun time
and a great opportunity to provide a much appreciated
service in our community. The award will be shared
with our Auxiliary members at our next meeting on
Monday, March 12th beginning at 6 p.m. with refreshments and fellowship, followed by the business meeting
at 7 p.m.
At the Mid-Year Membership Meeting in Lansing, the
State Officers’ Wives reported that 3400 sweatshirts,
900 bath baskets, 31 sets of twin bed sheets, 700 hats,
scarves, and mittens, and $5000 in cash and gift cards
were brought by Knights of Columbus members from
around the state for Christmas gifts for the boys and
girls of Holy Cross Children’s Serivces. Council #5436
should be proud of its contributions, as we sent at least
18 sheet sets, 20 bath baskets and a good number of
sweatshirts. Brother Francis is very humbled by the
generosity of the Knights and is extremely thankful for
our contributions, as are the kids of HCCS. At the
summer meeting at Mackinac Island, we will again be
contributing a donation of a gift basket for a raffle that
raises money for HCCS. The money that is collected is
then matched by a corporate sponsor. Usually the
Knights are able to raise over $20,000 for HCCS from
this raffle. If anyone has ideas for a raffle basket theme,
please share them at our next Ladies Auxiliary meeting
or call me!
A group of our ladies and friends attended a performance of Nunset Boulevard on January 29th at Meadowbrook Theatre in late January and loved it! It was a
hilarious show! Make sure to join us for our next
planned outing (still in the works)…
The Auxiliary decided to share some love with the St.
Vincent DePaul Society at both Our Lady of the Lakes
and St. Daniel’s parishes.
Ladies Auxiliary -continued
The $460 we raised at our Christmas dinner/auction will
be divided between the two so they can help those in our
community who are in dire need of assistance.
If you have Christmas, birthday, thank you, or any other
type of greeting cards that you no longer need, the Ladies
Auxiliary is collecting them for Kids’ Corp., a program for
the children at St. Jude’s Ranch to learn entrepreneurship skills. The children participate in making the new
cards by removing the front and attaching a new back.
The result is a beautiful new card made by the children
and volunteers. The benefits are two-fold: customers receive “green” holiday cards for use and the children receive payment for their work and learn the benefits and
importance of “going green”. There is a box in the
Delaney Parish Center at Our Lady of the Lakes labeled
“Cards for St. Jude” for donations of your used cards.
They will be collected until mid-February.
(The following shameless plug/information is provided
for those who ask me when my next music gig is…so
here it is! Yes, yours truly will be playing violin in this
performance.)
Love music? The Oakland Symphony Orchestra will
have a concert at Oakland University’s Varner Recital
Hall at 3 p.m. February 12th. Tickets are $20 each ($10
for students) and are available at the door. This concert
showcases the winners of the 15th David Daniels Young
Artists Concerto competition at the university. The program includes a piano concerto by Poulenc, and a euphonium concerto by Wilby, as well as works by Mussorgsky/Ravel and Theofanides. Come see the show
and expand your artistic horizons!
Time is running out to sell the Knights of Columbus MI
State Raffle tickets. The drawing is in March! Big prizes…lots of prizes! If you haven’t yet bought a ticket,
please consider doing so soon. Remember, each $5 ticket sold by our council gives a return of $1 to us. If you
need a ticket, let me know; I have plenty! I will also have
them for sale at Friday night fish fry and at the pancake
breakfast at Lakes on Feb. 12th.
“Forget love…I’d rather fall in chocolate.”—Unknown
Kara Fuller, President
HELP WANTED/NEEDED: Ladies (and gentlemen, too), we need your help. If we cannot get more
assistance in the kitchen with bingo, we may need to stop providing hot food service at bingo altogether.
If you can help, call Hope Alesi at 248-625-6151. You do not need to be a member of the Auxiliary to
help at bingo. We will teach you what to do and you will work with an experienced team member.
Thank you for your support of the Knights.
