Landscape painters came together in the original village centre and established the School of Genk. Today you can see their work in the Emile Van Doren Museum. As in any village centre, the posh villas of dignitaries were located next to labourer’s cottages, village shops and village cafés. Genk has in the meantime evolved into a city with an industrial past and rich industrial heritage. In the city centre of Genk you can see how the charms of the village and the city were combined into a place where entrepreneurship and authenticity go hand in hand. 33 EMILE VAN DOREN MUSEUM Did you know there was a Genk school of landscape painters in the 19th century? A group of like-minded artists fascinated by the Genk landscape with its mysterious swamps and sandy heathland. Emile Van Doren was one of them. His villa was converted into the Emile Van Doren Museum, where you can discover part of his oeuvre as well as that of his contemporaries in his former painting studio. The streets are elegantly interwoven, which had a lot of practical advantages. When the men were in the mine, the women and children kept the district alive. They had followed their husbands from a foreign country and brought numerous household habits, recipes and souvenirs to Genk. This resulted in a cultural melting pot, which, together with the peculiar street plan, still gives the district a certain charm. Zwartberg subsequently experienced an explosive growth until the mine closed in 1966. This walk starts in the former house of the mine manager, nowadays a charming B&B, and takes you on a tour of the relics of Zwartberg’s rapid growth. Industrial buildings have disappeared, but the districts, the school, the church and numerous other elements still bear witness to the bustle of the past.
