Even though she adores bold colors and
patterns, homeowner Susan Trujillo Miles had always been too
intimidated to commit to big, colorful furniture. But with designer
Maggie Cruz’s encouragement, she took the plunge on two 90-inchlong blue sofas and two zigzag chairs. The rest of the room is about a
hundred decibels quieter thanks to wood and chrome coffee tables,
metal “bamboo” chairs, and a seagrass rug from Pottery Barn. The
walls and ceilings are painted Seapearl by Benjamin Moore.

To make a big impact, Susan
covered her foyer floor with boldly patterned
cement squares from Original Mission Tile. “I
wanted that wow factor and knew it wouldn’t be too
overwhelming in a 12-foot-by-12-foot area,” she says.

four-bedroom 1979 ranch with just
the right number of head-turning
pieces, in just the right spots.
“Susan loves bright, quirky things,”
says designer Maggie Cruz. “We
needed to figure out how to
incorporate them throughout the
house so they didn’t take over
any room but still got noticed.”

When Susan and Seth bought the
house, the kitchen had these blue glass cabinets
and matching blue glass countertops. Susan admits
the modern style struck her as a little odd at first.
But she eventually fell for the look and decided to
keep it almost exactly as is. The only changes made
were swapping the blue glass countertops for white
quartz ones to break up the sea of blue, and hanging
a lantern-style pendant from Visual Comfort.

patio The sliding glass doors stay open
when Susan and Seth entertain outside, so Susan
and designer Maggie wanted the patio to mesh
with the colors inside the house. In the center is
an outdoor sofa with gray cushions from Miyo
Home that can be hosed down when it gets dirty;
it’s layered with patterned pillows from Etsy. The
green garden stool was a HomeGoods find, and
the striped rug is from Crate & Barrel.

master bedroom Susan pictured something
I’d always decorated with “retreat-y”
for the bedroom, and this light-wood four-poster bed
neutrals and little pops of
from Anthropologie fit the bill. “It’s grown-up but doesn’t feel
color. This time around I wanted formal or stuffy,” she says. The rest of the room is done in quiet
shades so the bed can soar. The two chairs are from Dwell Studio,

“The kids were always asking
me what they were doing each day, and it was
making me crazy,” says Susan, who came up with
the idea of a floor-to-ceiling calendar to keep track
of playdates and practices. It’s made with chalkboard
paint (Black by Rust-Oleum) and painted wood letters
from a crafts store. A West Elm table and chairs sit on

girls’ bedroom
In their shared room, AvaRiley and Eloise have two different-color spindle beds
from The Land of Nod. A striped cotton area rug from Dash
& Albert unifies the hues. “It’s bright and happy, and it ties
everything together, including the neutral raffia wallpaper,”
says Susan. The light fixture is from Stray Dog Designs.
