A Note from Ted - Savannah Bee Company
A Note from Ted I founded Savannah Bee Company out of my passion for beekeeping and honey. That passion carries through in every product I sell. After more than 30 years working with bees, I’m confident my company offers the world’s finest honey and beeswax body care products available. We carefully bottle the purest single-flower honeys without blending them. Our Everyday Honey line instructs customers how to use each particular honey- Grill, Tea, and Cheese. All of our honeys are hand-harvested at the peak of the blooming season to ensure purity. All are KSA Kosher certified, and all are 100% pure honey. We make decisions about sourcing honey based on purity rather than on profit. Trust me; our honey is the best you’ll ever taste. Our body care products are all-natural, use organic ingredients, and work as well or better than those on the market that are loaded with chemicals. The products feel great on your skin and are good for your skin and body as well. There is no tradeoff between our natural products and how well they feel and work. I hope our customers enjoy using all our products as much as we enjoy making them! Bees live in a manner that only contributes positively to the world around them. I see honeybees as role models for living in harmony with our environment and each other. Ted Dennard President and Founder of Savannah Bee Company Savannah Bee Company • 211 Johnny Mercer Blvd. Savannah, GA 31410 • (912) 503-2961 Savannah Bee Company Overview Ted Dennard founded the Savannah Bee Company in 2002 after a longtime passion with honey and bees. Ted was 13 when he met Roy Hightower, a beekeeper who was looking to place beehives on the Denard family’s 100-acre forest retreat near Brunswick, GA. At first, thousands of bees buzzing around Ted’s head only caused panic, but old Roy twirled a frame of honeycomb in front of young Ted’s eyes. The sunlight shone through the honeycomb like stained glass. Roy cautioned, “Son, these bees can become a way of life.” Ted kept bees throughout high school and while in college at Sewanee. During Ted’s years in the Peace Corps, he spent his time teaching beekeeping to more than a 100 beekeepers. During those years in Jamaica and after he’d returned home to Georgia, Ted was still constantly in the beehives and gave away all the honey he made. Then a friend opening a new store in downtown Savannah convinced him to bottle and sell his honey in her store. Soon, more and more stores called wanting to sell Ted’s honey, of among them being Dean & Deluca. The popularity of Savannah Bee products became so overwhelming that Ted made the leap from working out of his kitchen to officially starting a honey company in 2002. In the beginning, Savannah Bee Company was built upon relationships with smaller boutiques. Then in 2003, Ted made his first visit to the Fancy Food Show where Williams-Sonoma, Neiman-Marcus, Crate & Barrel and others discovered Ted’s Savannah Bee honey. In October 2008, Savannah Bee opened its flagship store on Broughton Street in the middle of downtown Savannah. Since then, Savannah Bee has continued wholesaling honey and beeswax body care products to thousands of stores around the nation, has opened two more retail stores in Savannah and one store in Charleston, has built a thriving web business, and has kick started a not-for-profit called the Bee Cause. Ted and Savannah Bee Company have racked up a number of accolades the past few years. In 2007, Ted was named the Georgia Small Business Person of Savannah Bee Company • 211 Johnny Mercer Blvd. Savannah, GA 31410 • (912) 503-2961 the Year. In 2008, Savannah Bee Company received a Gallo Family Vineyards Gold Medal Award for best condiment. Savannah Bee Company has been a member of the Inc. 500/5000 List since 2009, and in 2010, Ted was a finalist for the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year. Savannah Bee was also featured as a “Small Business Success Story” on CNN in 2010. 2011 brought a Sofi Awards Silver Finalist nomination for “Outstanding Classic”, and our retail stores were named Best Downtown Shop and Best Gift Shop by the Savannah Morning News. Staying true to Savannah Bee’s mission, Ted is using his expanded reach to educate more people about the wonders of the honeybee. He regularly speaks with various organizations and garden clubs, and he loves teaching kids (and adults!) about honeybees. Ted’s lifelong passion for honeybees is seen in his company, the specialty honey, and the luxurious, beehive-based body care products he produces. Today, Savannah Bee Company is working to maintain quality and improve systems while expanding the company’s reach. Ted’s hope is that Savannah Bee Company emulates a beehive, where everything and everyone his business touches is benefitted. Savannah Bee Company • 211 Johnny Mercer Blvd. Savannah, GA 31410 • (912) 503-2961 Bee Healthy At the Savannah Bee Company, we are passionate about spreading the good word of honey! Not just how delicious it is and what a gourmet treat it can be but also how good it is for you. Research being carried out around the world today reaffirms what our ancestors already knew. It suggests that honey helps in the healing and sterilizing of wounds and ulcers, in the growth of new skin, and has many antibacterial properties to promote healing. Making honey a regular part of your diet has also been recognized as a way to boost antioxidants in the body and promote general health and well-being. Because honey is high in sugar and low in protein and quite acidic, it helps to kill the contaminants it comes into contact with. The main antibacterial agent in honey is hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), which is released when honey touches the skin. This is produced by the enzyme glucose oxidase which is introduced into honey by the bee. Here are just a few of the ways that honey heals: Treating Allergies The most effective way to treat allergies with honey is to begin chewing honeycomb, as if it were a piece of gum, every day one to two weeks before allergy season begins. Treating Burns Apply honey to the burn with a cotton swab and then cover it with a soft bandage. Change the dressing daily until the burn is healed. Treating Asthma Mix 1 teaspoon of honey with ½ teaspoon of cinnamon. Take the mixture at bedtime. Chewing honeycomb is also a good way to help alleviate asthma. Preventing Scars Honey has a hygroscopic nature. This means that when honey is exposed to air, it draws moisture in from the air. This is very useful as honey may help to prevent scarring by keeping the skin moist and help in the growth of new tissue. Apply a small amount of honey to a wound with a cotton swab prior to applying a bandage. This will prevent the bandage from sticking and promote healing. Treating Eczema The healing properties of honey have been known to alleviate or even cure eczema. Use a beeswax-based salve daily on the affected area. Relieving Coughs Honey can sooth a sore and scratchy throat and help stem coughing. Drinking tea or warm lemon water mixed with honey is a time-honored way to soothe a sore throat. In recent studies, children age 2 and older with upper respiratory tract infections were given up to 2 teaspoons (10 milliliters) of honey at bedtime. The honey seemed to reduce nighttime coughing and improve sleep. In fact, in the study, honey appeared to be as effective as the cough suppressant dextromethorphan in typical over-the-counter doses. Savannah Bee Company • 211 Johnny Mercer Blvd. Savannah, GA 31410 • (912) 503-2961 Un.Bee.lieveable Honey Artisanal, single-varietal honey is rare and beautiful. It is carefully extracted by small-producing beekeepers and delivered in its raw form. It is not heated, treated or blended with any other honey, and has layers of complex flavor. As soon as you taste single-flower honey, you know how special it is. Just as not all wine rootstock is created equal, the nectar from some flower blossoms and the manner in which the honey is handled produces far superior honey. At Savannah Bee, we are committed to bringing to market only the purest, highest quality single-flower honeys available. Premium Single-Varietal Honey Tupelo Tupelo is the Queen of the honey world and the “gold standard” by which all others are measured. Harvested each April along remote rivers in southeastern Georgia and western Florida, it is one of the rarest and most valuable honeys in the world. Tupelo has a subtle buttery texture that melts on your tongue and fills your mouth with a vanishing sweetness. Wildflower Our wildflower honey from coastal Georgia has a mild and subtle flavor that is dependent upon the season, weather, and flowering plants of the area. Our wildflower honey is the perfect all-purpose honey and is great for sweetening beverages, glazing over veggies on the grill, or making desserts. Orange Blossom Made in Florida in the early spring when the citrus trees are in bloom, this honey is characterized by its candy-sweet, rich, orangy flavor. This delicious honey is an explosion of citrus on the palate followed by hints of toffee and almonds. Sourwood This distinctive, award-winning honey has an earthy, complex gingerbread flavor profile with hints of maple and spice. Produced in the southern Appalachian Mountains, it can only be produced in small batches. Sourwood has a tint of purply-brown color and has garnered blue ribbons at the World Honey Show. Acacia An American transplant to Europe in the 1600s, this tree has made dense stands, allowing bees to make a pure, monofloral honey. Its delicate white blooms create a mild taste the Italians say has “a hint of vanilla.” Acacia honey is award-winning and highly prized throughout the world. Winter White Made from wildflowers in the highlands of Idaho, this exquisite whipped honey has an uniquely smooth and creamy texture that feels like snow melting on your tongue. It has a pure, clean taste, with just a hint of fruit and cinnamon. Tea Honey is equally delicious in coffee, lemonades and mojitos. This wildflower honey from the south coast of Georgia is traditional with a mellow floral taste. Savannah honey is perfect for everyday use. Sweeten everything from your tea to marinades! Cheese Honey Charleston Honey Cheese Honey is a special honey chosen to complement gourmet cheeses. It is especially good paired with salty cheeses, such as Manchego, and more pungent cheeses, such as tangy, creamy blue cheeses. Cheese Honey has a spicy, tart-apple taste that just goes great with cheeses. Bright and crisp, Charleston honey is a robust wildflower honey from the banks of the Ashepoo River just outside of Charleston. Charleston honey is perfect for everyday use. Try it over warm scones or drizzled into Greek yogurt! Grill Honey Palmetto Honey Grill Honey has a bold flavor profile to brighten the flavor of grilled foods. It has a bold, maple spice flavor with a touch of sweetness. This honey is perfect for caramelizing meats, veggies and seafood on the grill. Grill Honey also adds a distinctive flavor to marinades, vinaigrettes and sauces. Our Palmetto Honey is rich and smooth with a subtle smoky taste. This honey is the perfect sweetener for sweet tea and great for creating glazes and dressings. Savannah Bee Company • 211 Johnny Mercer Blvd. Savannah, GA 31410 • (912) 503-2961 Un.Bee.lieveable Honey Like honeybees do, Savannah Bee Company wants to benefit everything it touches. By partnering with causes like Heifer International and the Georgia Sea Turtle Center, Savannah Bee Company is able to actively support and give back to causes it believes in. BeeCause Honey Bee Buddies Honey In 2011, we partnered with the Georgia Sea Turtle Center on Jekyll Island, GA, the only sea turtle hospital of its kind in the state. The hospital uses honey and honeycomb extensively in wound treatment and care of injured sea turtles. $3 of every bottle of Bee Buddies honey sold directly benefits the Sea Turtle Center. Bee Cause Honey In 2013 Ted founded the Bee Cause Project: inspiring young people to understand, appreciate, and protect the noble honeybee. The goal is to educate by installing glass observation hives in schools or creating a honeybee focused curriculum. It is important for people, and especially our youth, to understand the vital role of the honey bee, and how protecting them is of utmost importance. Savannah Bee Company • 211 Johnny Mercer Blvd. Savannah, GA 31410 • (912) 503-2961 Bee Beautiful A few years ago, Ted Dennard had a beauty epiphany. He was washing honey off his hands at the end of a day working with the hives and noticed how clean and soft they were. He wondered how he could bring the beauty secrets and benefits of the hive to the market. He began experimenting and created a line of all-natural beauty products made from honey, beeswax and plant and nut extracts. Today, Savannah Bee produces body butter, hand cream and salve, liquid honey hand soaps, certified organic lip balms and natural and organic lip tints. Transcending all ages, honey remains the “Golden Elixir” of skin care. Rich in lore and myth about its radiant beauty enhancing properties, science has started to catch up.
