We have come along way from where we were to where we are today. The past year has been challenging but everyone knows that better days are ahead. Now that we have made it to smoother waters we may feel like now is the time to relax and enjoy the ride as we float down stream. I don’t want us to hurry past the calming waters, so let’s rest up a bit, but also let’s get ready to do even greater things in 2016 and beyond. In past years I have made New Year resolutions only to forget them by the end of January (if not by the next morning), but not so for this coming year. Instead of thinking about what 2016 will bring, or instead of promising to be more active in your faith life, your church participation, your community involvement, instead of hoping all this will happen by one simple vow. All you have do to make it come true is to “be” more active. The hardest part of being more involved is be-ing more involved, but once you be-come more involved you will realize that it isn’t hard at all and that it is really fun, and it is rewarding, and it is so much more. Actually, as you find yourself serving the Lord and others you will begin to find your true purpose in life – and once you find meaning in your life - everything begins to make a drastic change for the better. I know a lot of people who are stuck in a rut they find themselves paddling upstream, struggling, and going nowhere. They have being doing the same thing year after year and they continually get the same result. They complain that they want a better, easier, more enjoyable life but they refuse to do anything different. When I tell people the best way to get ahead in life is to start going to church more often, get involved in a Bible study, participate on a board or committee – when I suggest this to people they think that I am crazy. You may be thinking that yourself. But let me explain… If you or anyone else continues to do the same thing year after year you will probably get the same results. If you what different results, better results, you have to do things differently. I propose to you that the best way to succeed in life is to understand, follow and live according to the One who created it. It’s that simple. If you are looking at changing your life for the better – 2016 can be the year of new beginnings, new possibilities. My prayer is that you don’t just make a resolution this New Year’s to then find yourself next December right where you are today but a year older. My prayer is that you get yourself involved at Our Savior growing in your faith as you serve God and our neighbors. Having more energy in life, more time in the day, more enjoyment in what you do --- it is as simple as be-coming who God desires you to be. Be-come the true you, you won’t regret it; you’ll wonder why you waited so long to do it in the first place. Remember…. With God all things are possible… (Matthew 19:26) Have a Happy, Blessed, Productive New Year in the Lord all year long and beyond! Pastor Mike How do You Define Love? – Authors Unknown 'Love is when a girl puts on perfume and a boy puts on shaving cologne and they go out and smell each other.' Karl -age 5 'Love is what's in the room with you at Christmas if you stop opening presents and just listen.' Bobby - age 7 'When my grandmother got arthritis, she couldn't bend over and paint her toenails anymore. So my grandfather does it for her all the time, even when his hands got arthritis too. That's love. Rebecca- age 8 'When someone loves you, the way they say your name is different. You just know that your name is safe in their mouth.' Billy - age 4 'Love is when you go out to eat and give somebody most of your French fries without making them give you any of theirs.' Chrissy - age 6 'Love is when my mommy makes coffee for my daddy and she takes a sip before giving it to him, to make sure the taste is OK.' Danny - age 8 'If you want to learn to love better, you should start with a friend who you hate. ' Nikka - age 6 'Love is when you tell a guy you like his shirt, then he wears it everyday.' Noelle - age 7 'My mommy loves me more than anybody You don't see anyone else kissing me to sleep at night.' Clare - age 6 'Love is when your puppy licks your face even after you left him alone all day.' Mary Ann - age 4 'Love is when Mommy sees Daddy on the toilet and she doesn't think it's gross.' Mark - age 6 Laughing with Lutherans If you love something, set it free. If it comes back, it was, and always will be yours. If it never returns, it was never yours to begin with. If it just sits in your living room, messes up your stuff, eats your food, uses your phone, takes your money, and never behaves as if you actually set it free in the first place, you either married it or gave birth to it! WHAT'S HAPPIN' From the Desk of the President During the last year I have listened and learned a lot about you and from you, the members of our congregation. One of the lessons I re-learned concerned communicating to you what is going on. I got the feeling that some of you might have the perception that the leadership is acting in secret, planning all kinds of things that we could do without anyone knowing. Well…...from my point of view and from the depths of my heart that perception is no where near true…..but then…..how would you know it is not true if you don't hear what is going on. So, I intend with each Scroll to update you on the actions and decisions of the Leadership Team. I invite you then to talk with me if you have any concerns about any of it. Communication is important, but remember…. It is a two way street. I need for you to talk with me anytime you have any questions, concerns or suggestions – after all, I can't listen if you aren't talking…... In addition to this article, we will once again be posting, on the bulletin board in the long hall, the reports from each of the ministries/positions on the Leadership Team. Please take the time to read what your leaders are doing and see if there is any way you can volunteer to help. Our Mission: Know Jesus and Make Him Known is not just for the leadership – it is the mission of every member of our church. January 2016 Leadership Update: 1. The Outreach leader that you elected, Carolyn Fox, has been inundated with work and school. She has been feeling that she is unable to give to this very important ministry the attention that it deserves. God does understand our problems and he answers our prayers as he did for Carolyn. God sent Lisa Mack who volunteered to fill out the rest of Carolyn's term (ends 12/2016). I have appointed Lisa to this position and you will have the option to confirm that appointment at the June Congregational Assembly. Carolyn has volunteered to stay on the Outreach Committee and Lisa asks anyone with a heart for outreach to join them. 2. The Leadership Team ratified the name change for the Board of Elders because, according to Missouri District, women should not be referred to as Elders since that term refers to Pastoral functions. The new name for the Board of Elders is the Board of Spiritual Life. 3. The Ambassadors of Reconciliation gave us the final written report with several recommendations. The Executive Committee (President, VP, Chairman and Vice-Chair Board of Spiritual Life (Former Elders) and Pastor) met to decide who would address those recommendations. Since the Executive Committee does not have any authority, this action was then ratified by the Leadership Team and will be ratified by the Board of Spiritual Life. If you would like more information, please let me know. 4. One of the recommendations from the Ambassadors report is to address the poor governance in our church. To this end I have renamed/reformed our Constitution Committee and calling it the Governance Committee. This is because its scope is a lot broader since they will be looking at all governance within the church, and even the organization of the church which is being done by many churches. This action was ratified by the Leadership Team. 5. One of the recommendations that came out of the Open Forum held on Jan 25, 2015 was to look into getting a bus for the church. Allen Fox did a lot of research and found there is definitely a need. However, the Leadership Team determined that we were not in a position to take on that responsibility yet. My door is always open, my phone is always on, and I check my email continuously. PLEASE feel free to talk with me any time. I do ask that you do not talk with me about issues on Sunday morning. That is my time to worship my Lord and Savior and I ask that you respect that time. If you want to talk, just let me know and I will call you. Thank you and I look forward to being in mission with you to glorify our God. When you choose your envelope, you then make a donation to the youth attending the National Youth Gathering. Each Envelope of Love will have a specific monetary amount on it. You are asked to return it with the amount labeled on the envelope or a greater amount. In return, you will receive certain incentives. Each donation will receive an email or postcard from one of the youth attending the National Youth Gathering; also, depending upon the amount of the donation, you could receive several other incentive options from the youth, such as free babysitting, a free computer tune-up, free yard work, a free t-shirt, even a personalized video message from the youth while they are in New Orleans, just to name a few. With your help we can make this the most successful fundraiser we have ever had at Our Savior! Take part in our Envelopes of Love Fundraiser with us, and help the youth of Our Savior attend the 2016 National Youth Gathering! Thank you for your support, prayers, and encouragement! Chili Cook-Off 2016 was a huge success! We were blessed again to overflow the gym during our 2016 Chili Cook-Off. The preschool parent’s involvement in the Chili Cook-Off continues to grow. Our preschool children sang during the 11:00 church service and many of the preschool families stayed for the Chili Cook-Off. It was so nice to see the gym full with about an equal number of church members and preschool families all having fellowship together. The event lasted about an hour and a half and we raised over $1, 500. Our plans for the money include new trikes for the preschool. Be sure to check out our JAM Ministry Area! We are working to make some fun new updates and re-open the Kid’s Store!!! Children 3 years old – 6th Grade are encouraged to attend JAM, we meet each Sunday at 9:45 a.m. in the upstairs Eifert Fellowship Hall!!! We are the helping hands of God and we it is our responsibility and privilege to serve Him and our brothers and sisters. If you are looking for ways to serve, we have several fun and easy opportunities for you. We have availability in JAM Sunday School, Kid’s Connection, and of course our special events! Contact Cari Hannon to learn more at [email protected] or call the church office! CLUB 456 – Serving God Loving Others. We are going to ring in the New Year with a winter kick-off! A little bit of service, a little bit of fun, a whole lot of fellowship! Kids build relationships with one another as they learn, grow, and serve in their faith!! Mark your calendars and invite your friends for Sunday, February 28. FaithBuilders RETURNS! At JAM children will receive a new ‘building block’ to learn each month. It might be a Bible verse, it might be a part of the Catechism, and it might be something life-applicable. These are all meant to work to build your child’s faith stronger, one block at a time. JAMMIN’ in our JAMMIES is scheduled for Sunday, January 31! Kids are invited to wear their pajamas to church and Sunday School! TRUE LOVE 1 John 3:16 This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. Verse 18: Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth. It is easy to say I love you, but if actions don’t follow, it may be just empty words. God always put his love into actions beginning with Adam and Eve and thru out the entire scriptures ending with the greatest gift of love ever by giving his one and only son for our sinful lives. As we will soon enter the season of Lent, we need to give thanks to God for putting his love into action. I challenge all of us to put our love into action. Can we do it? With God’s help we can. Romans 5:5 And hopes does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us. Can we forgive us? Ephesians 4:32 Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you. With Gods help we can. PRAY FOR LOVE LIKE GODS LOVE AND FORGIVENESS TO OTHERS AS GOD FORGIVES US. Words from an Elder Board of Spiritual Life (Elder) Shepherding Groups BoSL Member Home Phone Congregational Members 1.
