Original French Content for Global Market October 27 & 28 2015 • Pacific Design Center Direct To Series 2015 Partners DIRECT TO SERIES is an event co-organized by The Cultural Services of the French Embassy in the United States and the Ile-de-France Film Commission. The Cultural Services of the French Embassy in the United States are intended to promote French culture in all its diversity. The French Cultural Services provides a platform for exchange and innovation between French and American artists, intellectuals, educators, students, the tech community, and the general public. Based in New York City, Washington D.C., and eight other cities across the US, the Cultural Services develops the cultural economy by focusing on six principal fields of action: the arts, literature, cinema, the digital sphere, French language and higher education. The French Cultural Services is interested in new and challenging ideas that will bring French and American people together in creative collaboration. The Ile-de-France Film Commission, a public establishment for Cultural Cooperation was established in 2004 at the initiative of the Ile-de-France in the framework of its cultural policy for the recovery of the film and audiovisual sector. Its main duties are to facilitate filming in the region by offering French and foreign film crews the best possible work conditions and production framework and to facilitate the setting up of French and foreign co-productions so as to make the Ile-de-France region a prime location for international productions. The Ile-de-France Region provides a yearly financial help of 15M€ for Film and Audiovisual Technical Industries. Among the recent French series supported by the Ile-de-France region : “The Bureau”, “The Returned”, “Trepalium”, “Versailles”. French series: a global opportunity One of the major players of the American and international scene said one day: “I consider French opportunities as global opportunities”. And that is exactly the purpose of “Direct to Series”: to bring French contribution to the global market’s very heart of creation. In the global industry of programming, TV series are the cornerstone and the theater of a fierce competition where innovation is the key factor. Innovation is unpredictable but always comes from a strong culture of narration. Balzac and Dumas invented the serial novel in the mid-19th century and the first film serials were produced by Léon Gaumont in the early 20th century. The creative potential of French producers inherits today this long tradition in a new context designed by the open international competition. “Direct to series” is the creative link between the remarkable capacity of innovation of the American industry and this emerging renewed capacity in France due to the high level of competition introduced by the excellence of American shows. The ambition of “Direct to Series” is to bring these innovative series to Los Angeles, to open a fertile debate with the creators of American series and contribute to the reinvention of the French model through this exciting confrontation. The Cultural Services of the French Embassy and the Ile-de-France Film Commission have to thank for their time and dedication their brilliant editorial committees in France and the US. His 11 novels have been translated in 22 countries. Born in Manhattan in 1955, he graduated magna cum laude from Bowdoin College in 1976. “I was a history major,” Kennedy explained. “Retrospectively, I think the history major provides much better training for a novelist. So much of what I do in my own fiction is observational; is looking at behavior. By studying human history you really see how human folly endlessly repeats itself. In my work—in whatever form it takes—I am very much grappling with what it means to be American in this way.” In 1977, he returned to Dublin, a city where he lived for one year when he was a student, and started a co-operative theatre company with a friend. He was later hired to run the Abbey Theatre’s second house, The Peacock. At the age of 28, he resigned from The Peacock to write full time. After several radio plays for the BBC and one stage play, he decided to switch directions and wrote his first book, a narrative account of his travels in Egypt called Beyond the Pyramids, which published in 1988. Kennedy and his wife moved to London that year, where Kennedy expanded his journalistic work, and wrote for The Sunday Times, The Sunday Telegraph, The Listener, The New Statesman, and the British editions of Esquire and GQ. Kennedy’s novels are often written in European landscapes, and have been particularly acclaimed and beloved in France, where Kennedy was awarded the French decoration, The Chevalier de l‘Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 2007. Douglas Kennedy is actually working on the adaptation for television of two of his most famous novels with French producer Sydney Gallonde - VAB Productions: A Special Relationship (broadcaster TF1) and The Pursuit of Happiness. Dispatched to key locations all around the world and living under false identities for years at a time, their mission is to seek out and identify potential sources. In order to fulfill their mission, their false identities must be totally undetectable and highly elaborate. These fabricated identities are called legends, creating them takes months of work, maintaining them, takes discipline. All this and more lies deep in the heart of the most confidential branch of the secret service: The Office of Legends a.k.a The Bureau. The series kicks off with the return to the DGSE headquarters in Paris of GUILLAUME DEBAILLY, after a six-year mission in Syria. All too soon, the department gets hit with a major crisis: CYCLONE, a secret agent operating in Algeria has completely vanished off the grid. DUFLOT, head of the BUREAU, needs to quickly track and lock down Cyclone’s whereabouts., all resources are dedicated to this case. Questions start to clutter and pile up: was an error made during the making of Cyclone’s legend? Did he turn on the DGSE and become a double agent? Is he still alive? Duflot decides to call on Dr. BALMES, a recently enrolled psychiatrist whose task is to observe and draw up surveillance reports on each member of the force. In the midst of locating Cyclone, The Bureau must also maintain a close eye on a promising new recruit: MARINA. Once her training completed, she will be sent on a difficult mission: infiltrate Iranian nuclear activity. But before being sent off, she has to complete a full test of her abilities: eluding pursuers, resisting violent interrogation tactics, staying undercover at all time and of course manipulating people. Guillaume manages to make progress on the Cyclone case, but his personal and “normal” life in Paris is proving difficult especially when he is informed that Nadia, a woman he was madly in love with during his last mission in Syria is actually in Paris. For love, he is willing to take risks…for him and the Bureau. attending Alex Berger Raphaël Chevènement (writer) Writers Eric Rochant, Camille De Castelnau, Emmanuel Bourdieu, Cecile Ducrocq, Elena Hassan, Corinne Garfin, Duong Dang-Thai, Juliette Senik Production Companies TOP - The Oligarchs Productions, Federation Entertainment (FEDENT) Producers Alex Berger, Eric Rochant, Pascal Breton Directors Eric Rochant, Jean-Marc Moutout, Helier Cisterne, Mathieu Demy, Laila Marrakchi Cast Mathieu Kassovitz, Jean-Pierre Darroussin, Léa Drucker, Sara Giraudeau, Florence Loiret-Caille, Jonathan Zaccai, Gilles Cohen, Alexandre Brasseur, Michael Abiteboul, Zineb Triki, Atmen Kelif, Medhi Nebbou, Elodie Navarre Broadcaster Canal+ International sales Federation Entertainment (FEDENT) Filmed in Paris, Ile-de-France and Maroc Support of Ile-de-France Region Format 10 x 60’ Direct To SerieS 7 NO JOB NO FUTURE JUST HOPE 8 Direct To Series [email protected] © Jean Claude Lother TREPALIUM SYNOPSIS In this dystopian thriller, the economic situation is a nightmare: only 20% of the population is actively employed. King Louis XIV of France is a 17th century rock star, an extraordinary strategist and an utterly ruthless ruler. The year is 1667. Louis is 28 and finally in sole command of his kingdom. Haunted by childhood memories of a bitter coup against his father, he commissions the most beautiful palace in Europe, Versailles. One of Louis’ prime targets is his younger brother, Monsieur, an effeminate dandy and formidable warrior. The court is also a battleground for love as Louis’ queen, Marie Therese, fights to tame his wandering eye. Can she win back his heart from his mistress, the sister of the King of England? But when morning comes and Lea still hasn’t come home, her parents are distraught. Her father, Julien, sick with anxiety and frustrated by the lengthy delays of police procedures, takes the case into his own hands. Meanwhile, his wife, Florence, struggles to cope and keep her family from falling to pieces. Detective Molina, a newcomer to Lyon, takes charge of the case while doing his best to adapt to his new surroundings and his younger police partner, Camille Guérin. With them we plunge deep into the lives of the tightly knit Morel family circle, where each member seems to be hiding his own personal secret. As the case unravels we discover that Lea was in fact a much more mature and complexe woman than she led to believe. “THERE’S A NEW SHARIF IN TOWN!” IS DESTINY IN A NAME? It would seem so for Kader Sharif, who, like the sheriff in an old western, dreamed of serving his country in the National Police Force since childhood. Son of North African immigrants from a tough suburb of Lyon, this cop TV show fanatic’s dream came true: he solves crime with his own methods, like his TV heroes. Sharif knows the streets, and has that mix of instinct and psychology. He is humorous, charming and an “out of the box” thinker. His collaborator is everything he is not: a highly organized, by the books, professional female: Captain Adeline Briard. Sharif is apparently the opposite of Captain Briard, but her natural complement as well. Sparks will fly as they fight crime and as they get to know each other. Candice Renoir had put her career on standby for 10 years. When she returns from Singapore to resume service in a port town in the south of France, she feels a bit “rusty”. Only Candice can catch a killer because she knows the chemical composition of a window-cleaning product or determine the hour of a murder from the cooking-time of kebabs… Candice is only naive on the outside, and nobody can resist her! NINA THE RETURNED S2 (LES REVENANTS) Synopsis Synopsis © Jean-Claude Lother © Laurent Denis FTV SUCCESS STORIES Six months have gone by since the Returned gathered one night, before disappearing into the mountains, taking with them Simon, Camille and her mother, and Julie, along with the mysterious boy Victor. Since then, nothing has been heard of them. There’s no sign of the gendarmes who came to protect the residents of the Helping Hand shelter. Now, Adèle is about to give birth to Simon’s child. Part of the town is still flooded. The dam has been put under surveillance, and the army is providing logistical support to the inhabitants who decided to stay. Rumours are circulating about the return of the dead, but the authorities don’t take this seriously. The few witnesses end up keeping their mouths shut. Among them are Léna and her father Jérôme, who have not given up on finding Camille and Claire. A stranger arrives in town; his name is Berg, and he seems to know much more than he lets on. What the living don’t know is that the Returned have not gone away. Unable to leave the Valley, they sought refuge in an estate abandoned by its inhabitants, an area on the edge of town which has been made inaccessible by the flooding. They are still holding Julie, Victor, Camille and Claire, who have had to get used to this refugee lifestyle. That is when a new wave of resurrections occurs… Nina, 39 years old, trainee nurse and a mother with a kid! Forced to interrupt her studies in medicine for 10 years to raise her daughter Lily, who was stricken with cancer, Nina put her career on hold. Now that Lily is cured, 39-yearold Nina intends to take life back into her own hands by becoming a nurse at the Madeleine Brès Hospital. There’s never a moment’s rest on the Internal Medicine ward; plus Nina has to cope with the defiance of her superiors, who merely see her as the ex-wife of their own boss, Dr Costa, and who are perturbed when she diagnoses patients as well as she cares for them. But Nina is passionate about her work and refuses to bow down before her seniors. Every day, she has to deal with the moods of Dr Proust, who dreams of becoming Head of Department, with constant questioning from young intern Kevin, with Léo, her mentor and roommate, and with the need to identify the sometimes misleading symptoms of the patients on her ward. Each episode of NINA features two solved medical intrigues on an Internal Medicine ward. High in emotion, NINA successfully blends hospital plots and love stories, human relations and issues of society with a touch of humor. The series is being made by two of the world’s leading production companies, Kudos and Shine France. It is a flagship series for Sky Atlantic and Canal+. Mystery is everywhere and nobody will be spared by revenge... Desecrated graves, dead bodies dug up and left in model homes... Every time, the same ritual: a woman, a man, a teenager, who weren’t related but who form a new family. Amid the bodies, one photo: the one of Paul Maisonneuve, a Crime Squad legend in the North of France, now retired but forced to return to duty. Who is digging up the bodies? Who is leaving them in model homes and why? Young female detective Sandra Winckler who is in charge of the case, must work with Paul Maisonneuve to find out just who is behind these macabre stage settings. During her investigation, she will have to delve into Paul’s past, believing him to know more than he lets on. Because that’s where the truth must lie: somewhere in Paul’s past. For the detective and the ex-cop, life will never be the same... For in the shadows, is a man who will stop at nothing to gain his revenge – a long planned out revenge... The Tunnel: Sabotage is a high-volume, geo-political, bilingual thriller moving through the Eurotunnel and along the coastlines of Calais and Kent. This intricately plotted series reveals how the vulnerable and powerless become mere commodities in an underworld of personal predators, corrupted appetites and Machiavellian machinations. Our investigative duo – pragmatic Commander Elise Wassermann of the French police and wry DCI Karl Roebuck from the UK – reunite to investigate the case of a French couple who are abducted from the Eurotunnel, leaving their small daughter alone and terrified. But the case is complicated when a plane crashes into the Channel killing all on board. Suddenly they are faced with far bigger questions, and the eyes of the world are waiting for answers... A number of clues and trails swiftly emerge from the vast debris field left by the crash. Karl and Elise discover that the plane was hacked and intentionally sabotaged. It turns out that the perpetrator is one half of the kidnapped couple – Robert Fournier. Robert is the leader of Defence – a group of anti-establishment political vigilantes. The crash is the precursor to a brutal campaign which leads to their capture and destruction half way through the series. Defence, however, are only one piece of the puzzle. As Karl and Elise delve deeper into the case they discover that a far more sinister force is at work. Locating the guilty and demonstrating that guilt is one thing. Achieving justice is entirely another. Finding themselves at the heart of a complex political dogfight, Karl and Elise are challenged on the deepest and most personal of levels…. © Mathieu Lacote WRITERS Marc Herpoux and Hervé Hadmar PRODUCTION COMPANY Cinétévé CO-PRODUCTION Pictanovo PRODUCER Fabienne Servan-Schreiber, Jean-Pierre Fayer DIRECTOR Hervé Hadmar CAST Thierry Lhermitte, Marie Dompnier, Laurent Lucas, Jan Hammenecker, Catherine Mouchet BROADCASTER France 2 INTERNATIONAL SALES NeweN Distribution FILMED IN Nord-Pas de Calais and Haute –Normandie SUPPORT OF France Télévisions, Nord-Pas de Calais and Haute-Normandie Regions (via Pictanovo), CNC FORMAT 6x52’ ATTENDING Fabienne Servan-Schreiber THE CHURCHMEN S3 (Ainsi Soient-Ils) Synopsis 5 years have passed. This story features Mathias Freire, a psychiatrist, played by Jean-Hugues Anglade, and Anaïs Chatelet, a homicide squad captain, played by Raphaëlle Agogué. These two characters are connected to each other by memory and death. A series of crimes inspired by the Greek Mythology unites them in an investigation that will lead to face themselves and their own demons. The plot is constructed by a succession of mises en abîme (story within a story) and fragmented images that gnaw them. A two-path composition, in which each character plays its own partition in counterpoint with each other. Mathias and Anaïs are opponents, inseparable, fighting and always brought towards each other. An investigation fragmented with cliffhangers from one subjectivity to the other, until the key to the mystery gradually emerges... This story reveals the inner depths of the main characters with their contradictions and their affinities. As often in Jean-Christophe Grange’s work, the decorum occupies a prominent and very significant place: the sets are carefully described in expressionist ways and participate in the inner self of the characters. They evolve in response to events in communion with the characters and their evolution over the story. 1960. The world stage is dominated by a superpower, the very symbol of freedom, the great victor of Word War II, the nation the entire planet entrusts to keep the Cold War from spiraling into World War III — la belle France. Young André Merlaux is thrilled when he’s accepted into the French secret service, obviously the crème de la crème in intelligence. Under the tutelage of three elite agents, André is charged with the most difficult of missions, like figuring out America’s fixation with communism and making friends with the Germans. He’ll soon discover that France’s superiority lies in its complex administrative minutiae, and that failing to get the right stamp on the right form can result in war. André learns fast and may just become the finest of the finest secret agents. But he falls in love with the wrong girl… “A Very Secret Service” is a chauvinistic comedy show — the French missing link between James Bond and “The Office.” WRITERS Jean-François Halin, Claire Lemaréchal, Jean-André Yerlès PRODUCTION COMPANY Mandarin Télévision – Gilles de Verdière DIRECTOR Alexandre Courtès CAST Hugo Becker, Wilfred Benaïche, Christophe Kourotchkine, Bruno Paviot, Karim Barras, Jean-Edouard Bodziak, Mathilde Warnier, Joséphine de la Baume, Marie-Julie Baup, Antoine Gouy BROADCASTER ARTE France INTERNATIONAL SALES About Premium Content – +33 1 85 08 70 22 Laurent Boissel (Joint CEO & Founder): [email protected]; Emmanuelle Guilbart (Joint CEO & Founder): [email protected]; Julia Pillet (International Sales): [email protected]; FILMED IN Paris - Morocco SUPPORT OF Ile-de-France FORMAT 12X26’ © FTV/Bernard Barbereau © Angela Rossi / FTV/ Shine France Films CREATOR/WRITER Jean-Christophe Grangé PRODUCTION COMPANY EuropaCorp Television EXECUTIVE PRODUCERS Thomas Anargyros and Edouard de Vésinne CO-PRODUCTION Euro Media France DIRECTOR Jérôme Cornuau CAST Jean-Hugues Anglade, Raphaëlle Agogué, Michaël Cohen, Hocine Choutri, Didier Flamand, Serge Riaboukine, Jean-Claude Dauphin and Jacques Weber. And why?… In Corsica, the “Isle of Beauty”, Gendarmerie Captain Thomas Rotman is a stranger. Yet it is he who is given the thankless task of finding who did it. Julie and Yanis are a young couple who have just moved into “Bellerive” a beautiful house in the South of France, in the town where Yanis grew up, and had his first great love affair. As Julie is about to give birth to their first child, she starts hearing things, senses a presence nearby, and even spots small wet footprints on the ground. Is that pregnancy having a strange effect on her? And why does she have the feeling that her partner is not telling her everything about his past? It is 1986 now. In “Bellerive” lives a cheerful family, with teenage son Remi and 9 yearold daughter Valentine, who befriends a girl her age. But this friend Elise doesn’t really exist. Is Valentine seeing a ghost? Her parents, Françoise and Philippe Marsy disagree on how to deal with their daughter’s strange behavior. In 1969, a young couple, Ariane and Jean-Pierre, lives in “Bellerive”, with Jean-Pierre’s parents. The family is mourning the loss of 9 year-old Elise, who drowned in the marsh out by the back of the house. The circumstances of the girl’s death remain unclear and Ariane cannot bring herself to believe that it was simply an accident. Based on real events, « The Last Panthers » opens with a daring diamond heist bearing all the hallmarks of a gang known as the Pink Panthers. But the tragic death of a little girl during the raid sets on a collision course a British insurance agent, a French-Algerian cop and a Serbian diamond thief. “The Last Panthers” plunges the audience into a modern day Europe gripped by new forms of crime on an epic scale. The interplay between traffickers in jewels and drugs, European officials, war criminals and City bankers impact every one of us in ways we cannot foresee.
