School Program Guide 2015-2016 2015-2016 SCHOOL PROGRAM GUIDE At TELUS Spark we encourage students to think differently, challenge themselves and learn in different ways. We believe that education and learning doesn’t start and end just at school or here with us – it’s a sum of all these experiences. This is why we strive to bring new experiences, programs and technology to help you, your students, families and even adults to continue developing and learning – while having fun. You may have seen this with the opening of The Brainasium last summer, where visitors explored physics, sound and spatial learning. And this summer we’ll almost double The Brainasium for even more playful learning. This year we’ve pushed ourselves even further to deliver programs that deliver STEAM principles creatively. For example, we’re excited to launch programs that engage students with mathematics through dance in partnership with DJD (Decidedly Jazz Danceworks). In order to increase accessibility to our programs we are expanding the SHIFT Lab program and launching Distance Learning. If you can’t join us for the summer intensive, shorter workshops might be right for you. Distance Learning will see the expansion of the Direct From the Operating Room program along with the launch of distance learning programs for educators and classrooms beyond the Calgary area. We’re already looking forward to the upcoming school year and to continue to work with you to engage your students as they explore science, technology, engineering, art and math (STEAM). Sincerely, Katherine Ziff Vice President, Programs CONTENTS Field Trip Experiences at TELUS Spark Additional Programs at TELUS Spark Distance Learning Resources for Educators What Programs Are Available? In these programs, junior high and high school students watch a close-up, guided view of a surgery as it is happening. Surgical team members answer student questions, sharing insights into biomedical engineering, anatomy, career paths, and more. Embark on a week-long journey that allows your students to question and challenge, discover and grow, collaborate in new ways to solve problems and ultimately develop a passion for learning about science, technology, engineering, art and math. Supported by THE BRAWN FAMILY FOUNDATION. Sponsored by CHEVRON CANADA RESOURCES. Knee Replacement Presented in partnership with ALBERTA HEALTH SERVICES. Injury and arthritis can damage a knee, causing pain and limiting a person’s ability to walk. An artificial joint can reduce pain and restore mobility. Watch and ask questions as a surgical team replaces a knee in this 2.5 hour program. Price: $285 For up to 15 people. Each additional person: $18 Cataract Extraction with Lens Implantation Presented in partnership with the GIMBEL EYE CENTRE. New! Half of the cases of blindness in the world are caused by cataracts, a clouding of the lens in the eye. Vision can be restored by removal of the clouded lens and replacement with an artificial lens. Watch and ask questions as a surgical team extracts cataracts on two different patients in this 1.5 hour program. Homeschool Days Join us for Homeschool Days on September 14, 2015 and May 9, 2016. Take advantage of workshops, Live Theatre Shows, HD Digital Dome movies and more. All of the workshops and programs are inspired by recent research in inquiry-based learning. Preregistration is recommended. SparkScience.ca/Homeschool The Prototype Project Sponsored by LIGHTSTREAM RESOURCES LTD Direct From the Operating Room is also available as a Distance Learning Program. This program reinvents the science fair model and challenges students to create a working prototype of their own interactive science centre exhibit. It encourages students to be design thinkers while exploring STEAM concepts, with the help of scientists, engineers and tradespeople, who mentor them over a four-month period. Connect your classroom to our live knee replacement surgery experience over the Internet! All that is needed is a webcam, microphone, computer, and display screen together with a broadband connection. This program is available to junior high and high school students in late 2015. Due to the length and depth of engagement, participation is very limited. Contact us for more details. Price: $285 For up to 15 people. Each additional person: $18 Price with live question-and-answer interface: $300 Maximum number of students is 30. Price for viewing only: $250 Maximum number of students is 50. 4 SparkScience.ca/OpenMinds Don’t see what you need? Give us a call and ask us! In the Earth & Sky gallery, students will investigate Alberta’s unique geology, landscapes, weather and climate, and the forces that connect them. Without ever leaving the gallery, students will make observations and draw connections, applying the lessons learned from the Albertan landscape to the features of other worlds, all while developing and applying skills in collaboration, experimentation and observation. Energy is about transformation: from one form to another, from one use to another. In this gallery students will explore some of the fundamental principles of energy (conservation of energy, momentum, and gravity), while engaging in activities that build key skills for the future, including collaboration, problem solving, communication, observation and a willingness to experiment. sponsored by MEG ENERGY 27 sponsored by LIGHTSTREAM RESOURCES LTD./PETROBANK ENERGY & RESOURCES LTD.
