Installation of CHP (Combined heat and power plant) at a
large hotel resulted in annual reduction in carbon emissions
of 225 tons per year. Annual cost saving of around £40,000.
Project given interest free loan. Savings made more than
offset costs to pay back loan. Project qualified as “good
CHP” allowing ECAs to be claimed.
Renovation Historic Building retaining original features.
Requirement: create modern executive bedrooms while
retaining original character. Scope of work - refit new
services, existing cornice, timber features retained and
reformed to suit alterations, wiring and pipe work routed
to avoid disturbance to finishes. End result a traditional
building with modern amenities.

Scope of responsibility: Owner’s representative with input
at design stage. On-site construction monitoring, quality
and cost control, mechanical systems design, material
procurement. Fit out and handover.
New build and renovation Hotel Entrance and Foyer.
Project cost £2.8m
Scope of responsibility: Project manager - coordination of
activities in a working building. Sub contract labour and
materials for internal fit out. Owner’s representative on
main construction work for progress, cost, and handover.

Statutory Requirement
Building owners and operators face tough challenges in returning a profit during these difficult economic times.
Management efforts are therefore focused on main business activities and whilst there is a recognition and
acceptance of the need to ensure premises are complying with statutory requirements, often other priorities take
precedence.
Engineering Design Management have the necessary experience and expertise to assist organisations assess
their current level of compliance, identify where their business may be at risk due to statutory non-compliance or
potentially violate the terms of insurance cover.
A service is offered to building owners and managers comprising a survey of their premises to determine status of
compliance for the different systems outlined below.
The survey, depending on property size takes one day and is followed up with a report on the findings which are
presented to owners or operators. The report will provide a detailed assessment of where systems or procedures
are in need of improvement to safeguard the business and identify exposure to litigation or risk.
As an additional service Engineering Design Management can produce a computer based testing schedule which
defines the appropriate interval of testing for each system and equipment to assist owners or operators plan,
manage and meet their obligations.

Knowledge and experience gained over the last 40 years allows me to offer design, engineering and project
management services to clients intending to embark on new build, extensions or renovation work.
I strongly believe that good planning and management from concept stage to project completion are essential in
delivering a successful project in terms of quality, cost and time scale. If appointed my client would receive my full

Renewable Energy Carbon Reduction Opportunities
Engineering Design Management provides a service to owners and operators which will identify opportunities for
the installation of energy efficient, low carbon emission systems and equipment.
At the initial stage a site survey is carried out at the premises to assess existing engineering systems, plant and
equipment. The findings of the survey are evaluated and recommendations made which identify opportunities
where equipment and systems can be upgraded or replaced to improve energy efficiency. The benefits will result
in less energy being consumed, lower energy costs and a reduction in carbon emissions. Improvements proposed
will achieve an acceptable return on capital investment in renewable technology or recommend replacement of
existing plant with more energy efficient alternatives.
Specifically the survey and evaluation will identify opportunities in:
- Space heating and domestic hot water production
- Heat recovery, air and water
- Comfort and evaporative cooling
- Low energy lighting
- Photovoltaic - Solar energy

The survey and recommendations identify opportunities to reduce energy and carbon emissions. Engineering

“feed in tariffs” or interest free loans through Carbon Trust or other authorities.
