The initiation of the Business Education Partnership Program not only creates visibility for local businesses and organizations but also symbolizes a joint commitment to improving student achievement. The learning communities of Addison Trail and Willowbrook High School value the leadership, generous contributions and continuous support that the following partners demonstrate to our students and staff: Addison Chamber of Commerce & Industry Addison Floral College of DuPage Crowe Chizek DeVry University DuPage Tire & Auto Center Edward Jones GlenOaks Hospital Holiday Inn Kiwanis Club of Addison Kiwanis Club of Villa Park La Huerta La Placita Restaurant Mario's Nardi's Tower of Pizza Oakfield Ford Oxford Bank Steuerle Funeral Home UPS Villa Park Bank Villa Park Chamber of Commerce Wild Fire Harley-Davidson/Buell Creating Connections Through Mentoring Addison Trail High School, in conjunction with the Addison Business-Education Partnership Planning Council and Addison School District 4, initiated a mentoring program this school year to mutually benefit the schools and the community. Approximately 60 professionals from the local business community and area residents volunteered to meet with a high school or junior high school student once a week, for one-half hour during the school day. The purpose of the program, which was successfully launched in November 2004 and concluded in June 2005, was to foster a caring relationship between the mentor and student. Research shows as a result of mentor relationships, students pay better attention in classes, earn higher grades, and possess more enthusiasm and interest in school events. Mentors can also help the adolescents focus on the future by identifying goals and developing strategies to reach these objectives. Overall, the program had a positive and lasting impression on students through the mentor's contributions of friendship, motivation, and encouragement. The program could not have existed without the support of the following organizations and companies who had mentors volunteer in the program: Addison Fire Department Addison Park District Addison Police Department College of DuPage DeVry University La Hacienda De Los Fernandez La Magdalena Minuteman International Oxford Bank School District 4 School District 88 Tenacious Cleaning Service UPS Village of Addison If you would like to become involved in the mentor program next year, please contact Sherri Amsler, Director of Community Relations, at (630) 530-3989. Magnificent Munich Monday, August 1, 10 a.m. Join us for a fascinating slide presentation about Magnificent Munich. Gail and Al Popowits have lived in Munich and have revisited it on many occasions. In that time they have come to appreciate this glamorous, cosmopolitan metropolis with its world class museums, stately parks, and distinctive architecture. In this slide presentation we will visit Marien Platz, Mary’s Square. In this historic heart of Munich’s Viktualien Market, tourists and natives alike enjoy snacking on little white sausages smothered in sweet mustard and Brezen—a salty twisted bread— and drinking hearty Bavarian beer. The Residence is the home of the Wittlesbach family, who ruled Bavaria for more than 500 years. We will travel to Dachau, the infamous WW II death camp. We will enjoy Christmas celebrations in the heart of Munich; Fasching, Munich’s Mardi Gras; and much more. Al and Gail Popowits have lived and traveled in Europe for the past 20 years. They have been European tour guides, have taught travel courses, and have given numerous slide presentations throughout Chicagoland. News from the Village of Addison Mid-Summer 2005 From the Mayor’s Desk ... Two land-use questions that the elected officials and I are often asked are: “Why doesn’t the Village of Addison have a bookstore, or more clothing stores?” and “Why not just leave the empty lot near my home as open space?” First, the Village does not control what types of retail business will locate in Addison. Commercial property is usually owned by a developer, who markets the buildings and stores on that land to retailers. The retailers look at the potential of opening their store in that location usually based on a market analysis of the surrounding region. Strictly citing a need for a certain type of retailer in town does not always prompt the corporate owners of a store to look at that location. The Village’s role in economic development is to advise potential new businesses on properties that they may be interested in, and assist in the regulatory process of locating a new business to town, especially if any zoning or other special use questions are involved. These matters require consideration by the Plan Commission, Zoning Board of Appeals, or Village Board. The Community Development Department staff keeps in contact with local area developers and occasionally attends industry trade shows to solicit potential commercial development. Secondly, when a resident moves into their home, with vacant, privately-owned property nearby, it may seem like nothing will ever be built there. However, open space is usually owned by a private party, and the property has a zoning classification for its future development. Owners of property have the right to use their land for continued on page 12 Homeowners Beware the Sewer Rip-Off Artists The Public Works Department, Environmental Services Division responds to thousands of service requests for various environmental concerns within the community annually, but one of the most commonly misunderstood is the general service request for a sewer blockage. If your residence is experiencing a sewer blockage, you may contact Environmental Services during normal work hours (8 a.m – 4 p.m.) at 279-2140, or the Addison Police non-emergency number after hours at 543-3080, to report a sewer problem or blockage creating an interruption in sewer service. The Sewer Division responds to more than 1,000 sewer service requests for sewer service blockages per year and the most common question is, “When should I call a plumber and what is the Village’s liability?” The Village’s sewer service liability ends at about the inside edge of your sidewalk, or approximately fifteen feet from the curb-line in most neighborhoods. From that point to the home is the property owners liability. Although the Village does not maintain the piping on private property, or in the home, we can come to your home on a service request and help identify the point of blockage and inform you as to whether the problem is the Village’s liability or a plumber will be required. Village liability issues are resolved by the Village. If the homeowner does call a plumber and the problem is later found to be a Village of Addison liability, the Village may reimburse the homeowner to a maximum of $200 with proper documentation. continued on page 13 Village of Addison Mid-Summer 2005 Addison Police Department Website Have you ever wanted to find out information about the police department but didn’t know where to look or how? Well, here is a simple way to find out anything you need. The police department is part of the Village of Addison website at www.AddisonAdvantage.org. Each category is designed to provide the necessary information as well as who to contact for each of these categories. Also, each category is updated frequently with new and current information dealing with special events and changes within the department. The estimated resident’s cost for the removal and from 6 - 8 p.m. replacement of a 5’x5’ sidewalk square is approximately $50. Village of Addison Mayor continued from page 9 what ever the zoning classification will allow. Just like the owner of a single-family home, the owner of vacant land may sell their property, petition to resubdivide the land, and, in the case of unincorporated property, seek annexation to the Village. Annexation is not something that the Village Board is required to grant. Petitioners seeking annexation are often doing so to receive Village services such as water and sewer utilities. When the Mid-Summer 2005 owner of vacant land seeks to develop the property, it must be done within the zoning regulations for that property. If the land is zoned for commercial or multi-family residential use, that is what the owner is permitted to use it for. If the owner seeks to annex or re-zone the property, they must first petition the Village for such a change, which is subject to a public hearing before the Village Board and Plan Commission, where nearby residents, property owners and any other interested parties may give testimony regarding the proposal. If you are uncertain about the zoning classification of a vacant piece of land, you can always check its status by contacting or visiting the Village’s Community Development Department. I hope that the explanations of these two issues helps you better understand the role of the Village of Addison and your elected officials. Respectfully, Larry Hartwig Mayor CUT & SAVE Branch Pickup Service Ends in October The Village of Addison offers seasonal branch pickup service to residents from April through October. The process began over a year ago when district voters approved a building bond referendum which would allow the school district to borrow funds needed to make major renovations to aging school buildings. Last summer, the district sold the first set of bonds and began the search for architects who would plan and design building changes. STR Partners was hired last July to begin architectural work. The next step in the process involved interviewing and hiring a company to serve as construction manager for the project. At the October 26 Board of Education meeting, Gilbane Co. was approved as construction manager. Over the past year, STR has met with staff members to gather input about needs specific to each building. Gilbane proposed a construction schedule, accelerated from the original plan, NEW ROAD NEW PARKING in which work will be completed in all District 4 school buildings in 30 EXPANDED months. Construction bid PARKING LOT packages have been NEW BUS LANES proposed and accepted for work to be done this summer. The changes most visible to the public will be made outside of Indian BUILDING Trail Junior High School. A ADDITION new parking lot design will increase safety and NEW DROP-OFF/ improve traffic flow for PICK UP-DRIVE NEW ENTRANCE/ buses and cars. Bus pickEXIT DRIVE/STOPLIGHT up and drop-off will be moved to the west side of Indian Trail and a new parent driveway will be constructed on the east and south side of the building to facilitate student drop-off and pick-up. A new road is going to be added to connect the driveway on the north side of Indian Trail with Highview Avenue. Parking spaces will be added to the main parking lot, on the north side of the buildling and on the east side of the building. In the front of Indian Trail, traffic flow will be reversed from its current direction. Once construction is complete, cars will enter the southmost driveway and exit from the driveway on the north. Another major change is a new driveway off of Army Trail Blvd. which will align with Lincoln Avenue and will connect with the new drop- off/pick-up driveway. Most changes will be completed this summer, but the new traffic flow plan will not be implemented until the 200607 school year. Other building work to be completed this summer is important but not as visible as the Indian Trail site work. Ardmore, Army Trail and Fullerton will have floor and ceiling (continued on page 18) 4 Education New student registration & fees Families who are new to Addison School District 4 may pick up registration materials for the 2005-06 school year during summer at the Administrative Office, 222 N. Kennedy Drive. Office hours are7:00 am - noon and 12:30-4:30pm. The student fees for the 2005-06 school year are as follows: Kindergarten $38 Grades 1-5 $47 Grades 6-8 $74 Fees cover consumable materials such as work sheets and periodicals used by students. Junior high students must also purchase a gym locker lock ($5.50) and a gymsuit ($19.50). Paid busing is also an option for those elementary students who live within .9 mile of their elementary schoool or for junior high students who live within 1.5 miles of Indian Trail. For parents who make a one-time payment, the fee is $285. Those who choose a six-month installment plan will pay $305. Lunch costs have also been established. Elementary students will pay $1.90 a day for a complete lunch. The daily junior high lunch price will be $2.00. Students involved in athletics, band , orchestra or choir will also be required to pay a fee of $20 in order to participate in these activities. Health requirements Mid-Summer 2005 Bell to Bell View from the Addison School District 4 Superintendent The summer projects have gotten off to a very good start. All projects are on schedule as of the first week in July. Bruce Bare, Gilbane Company construction manager is moving our general contractors along to keep everyone on schedule. We are very pleased with the progress so far. We are looking forward to having Army Trail, Ardmore and Fullerton Schools completely air conditioned by the time school begins. The site work around Indian Trail Juior High School is progressing very well. The parking lot area will be completed by August 22 and the rest of the site work construction will be completed next summer. Summer school located at Lincoln Elementary School is going very well. We are providing support services in reading and math to approximately two hundred Addison 4 students. We will begin a three week summer school session in August for seventy-five bilingual students. This program should be very helpful to those students as they begin the school year on August 29, 2005. On a personal note, I want to thank the supportive Addison community for making my first year as superintendent of Addison School District 4 so enjoyable. And my wife, Carol, and I thank all of you who have extended your warm welcome. Addison is an exciting community to be part of and it is my privilege to serve the Addsion School District 4 and community. Enjoy the remaining months of summer. Sincerely, All students new to the district, as well as those entering kindergarten and fifth grade, are required to present proof of a recent physical exam Dr. Donald Hendricks and current immunization record in order to attend Superintendent classes in fall. Students began on Wednesday because teacher institute days were held on Monday and Tuesday of that week. This year, however, a change has been made. Students begin classes on MONDAY, AUGUST 29 and they will have a full week of school before the Labor Day holiday. 2005-2006 First Semester Dates August 29 September 5 October 10 November 10 November 11 November 23-25 December 23January 6 January 16 1st day of school for students Labor Day* Columbus Day* Parent/Teacher Conferences* Institute Day* Thanksgiving Break* Winter Break* M.L. Students researched animals and plants native to the rainforest. They wrote reports, built models and created a film in which each student presented information about the animals and plants they’d studied. This project ‘grew’ from the study of biomes that is part of the regular 5th grade science curriculum. Lacni joins school board Steve Lacni was elected in April to begin serving as the newest member of the District 4 Board of Education. Lacni cited three main reasons he wanted to join the school board--his belief in public education, in community schools and a quality education as one of the most valuable things we can give our young people. “With the referendum that passed last year, the district has an opportunity to do even greater things for kids,” said Lacni. “Construction of building additions, upgrading facilities, upgrading technology and curriculum choices are some of the things that will be addressed in the upcoming year. As an educator, I have experienced first hand how all of these important parts impact the educational process.” Lacni lists his goals as a board member as follows: -To ensure a quality education for all students in the district -To work with the community to address the education needs of all students -To work with parents, students, teachers, and administrators to meet the goals of No Child Left Behind -To ensure the funds from last year’s referendum are used to benefit the students of the district -To use his experience in education to assist the board in curriculum, teacher negotiations, and fiscal matters. In his time on the school board, he has already seen the approval of a five year teacher contract and the beginning of the school renovation construction work. Lacni is also hoping to improve communication with District 4 residents who live in Wood Dale by arranging to have Board of Education meetings broadcast on Wood Dale´s local access cable television channel. Lacni, who is a high school math teacher and athletic director at Elk Grove High School, lives in Wood Dale with his wife, Maureen, and their three children. 4 Education Mid-Summer 2005 Many thanks to businesses for their support District 4 continues to receive tremendous support from local businesses. Indian Trail Junior High, Lincoln and Stone Schools each received $500 grants from the new Addison WalMart in May. Ardmore School teacher, Aleida Vekony, was honored by the Villa Park WalMart as a Teacher of the Year. Along with the honor, Vekony received a $50 gift card and Ardmore School received a $1000 check from WalMart. In early May, Culver’s of Addison once again sponsored three CHARACTER COUNTS! lunches for District 4 students who have been selected from the six elementary schools and the junior high as examples of Lincoln School principal, Guillermo Heredia, accepts good character. $500 check from WalMart. District winners of the Young Authors competition were honored at a luncheon sponsored by Al’s Beef. In April, the winners of the district Battle of the Books competition celebrated their victories over pPizza. The 4th grade team from Lincoln School and the 5th grade team from Stone School enjoyed a luncheon compliments of Home Run Inn. We are very grateful for the support of our local businesses! (RENOVATIONS - continued from page 15) tiles replaced and all bathrooms totally renovated. Additionally, air chiller units will be installed in each of the three building. As has been demonstrated during the past two years at Indian Trail, the chillers make a significant improvement to the air quality in the warm spring and autumn months. In fall, building additions for Indian Trail and Lincoln Schools will begin. At Indian Trail, the addition will house a new kitchen and food service area on the first floor. Additional science classrooms and a walkway between the ‘square’ building and the ‘round’ building will be added on the second floor along with an elevator. This addition will be located in the southeast corner of Indian Trail. Lincoln School will have a courtyard and classrooms added on thenorth/ east side of the school. Because these additions are in new areas, work on thenew classrooms will begin during the school year.
