WELCOME TO
THE HIGH SHERIFF
CHALLENGE
High Sheriffs usually develop a theme for their year in office,
often reflecting their particular interests and experience.
Coming from a business background myself, it should be no
great surprise that my goal is to put the business community at
the heart of my year or, as I have a great interest in the way that
sport and culture can make a material difference to individuals
and communities, that my chosen charities reflect this interest.
Most responsible businesses recognise how a positive
approach to Corporate Social Responsibility can
contribute to all the firms’ stakeholders, including
their local community; so the High Sheriff Challenge
has been created to engage the business community in
my charitable vision. It is with great pleasure and with
even greater thanks that I can report 22 companies have
committed to The Challenge and so we will be able to
enjoy the various events in the knowledge that the three
chosen charities will enjoy considerable benefit from our
Challenger Company donations.
This manual confirms the detail of the 3 events and
the 3 charities, as well as providing a profile of and
contacts within, each Challenger Company. There will
be additional detail regarding each event circulated well
in advance of the actual date and there will also be calls
for information to help organise the day(s) and hopefully
enhance the enjoyment. Timely response to these requests
will be appreciated!
In addition to our generous Challengers, we have
been offered support and help by a number of other
organisations, all of whom are listed in this manual.
It has been a revelation to me how supportive the vast
majority of people and companies have been during the
planning phase of this initiative and a wonderful example
of the open-handedness that exists within the business
community in Oxfordshire.
In order to ensure good governance and efficient
administration, The Oxfordshire Community Foundation
will manage and report on funds from the Challenger
Companies and there will be a call for donations this
April. Some Challengers will pay the £7500 in two
tranches with the second tranche due in January 2015.
I much look forward to meeting everyone during the
course of my Shrieval year and sharing in the fun and
fellowship that is planned.
Thank you so much for your support,

followed by dinner at Oxford Brookes Sports Centre
Iffley Road Sports Ground, Iffley Road, Oxford
The Olympic Challenge is an opportunity for teams from
each Challenger Company to compete for the High Sheriff
Cup. The event will take place at the Iffley Road Sports
Ground in Oxford during the afternoon of Thursday 17th
July, followed by dinner at Oxford Brookes University
Sports Centre. Iffley Road is an iconic venue, famous for
Sir Roger Bannister’s historic run in 1954, breaking the 4
minute barrier for the mile for the first time. Whilst we
do not anticipate records to fall during this afternoon, the
intention is to enjoy an afternoon of sporting endeavour
and fun.
Each Challenger Company will enter a team of 5
individuals consisting of a gender mix (2 male/3 female
or vice versa) and with at least one individual over 50
years of age.

experience of managing this type of event and regularly
work with our hosts – Oxford University Sport. Thanks
are due to Jon Roycroft, Director of Sport at Oxford
University and Barry Grinham of Prime Energy for their
generous support.
To encourage all participants and add some expertise to
the afternoon, we will be joined by two well-known sports
personalities – Matt Dawson and Greg Searle. Matt was
known initially as a world cup winning English rugby
player and British and Irish Lion but is now frequently
to be seen on our TV screens as a multi-talented
commentator, competitor, compere and cook. Olympic
Gold medallist Greg competed in his first Olympic Games
in 1992, aged 20, where he won Gold in the coxed pairs
and his last in 2012, aged 40, where he won bronze in the
eight. Now an inspirational speaker with an involvement
in the business side of the sports scene, Greg will be full

THE HIGH
SHERIFF’S CHOIR
THE HIGH SHERIFF
BUSINESS LECTURE
Thursday 4th September, 13.00 – 18.00
followed by dinner.
Thursday 11th December, 16.00 (tbc)
Blenheim Palace, Estate Office, Woodstock, Oxfordshire OX20 1PP
The concept of the “Corporate Choir” isn’t new but, as
far as we know, this is the first time that 20 Oxfordshire
companies have come together to make wonderful
music. Each Challenger Company will enter a group of
4 individuals to join musical director John Lubbock, at
Blenheim, on the afternoon of Thursday 4th September.
John will work with the group to understand capabilities,
agree the pieces that the choir will perform in the
evening and then rehearse, what will be by the end of the
afternoon, the High Sheriff ’s Choir.
John Lubbock is the founder of The Orchestra of St
John’s Smith Square, an ensemble that celebrates its 50th
anniversary in 2017. He is an Honorary Fellow of the
Royal Academy of Music and has conducted in many
diverse venues across the world, from the Royal Albert
Hall and Carnegie Hall to St Mary’s Church, Thame. A
singer (he was a member of The Swingle Singers) and
a pianist, as well as a conductor, he and wife Christine
Cairns founded the charity Music for Autism in 2002.
Individuals who have never sung in public before are
more than welcome but it would be helpful if as many as
possible have at least an interest in music, even if no formal
training. Details of the 4 people need to be submitted by
Friday 8th August, including any musical experience and/
or capability. This will enable John to decide on the level
of ambition so that no one feels intimidated. The aim is
for everyone to experience the joy of communal singing
and to feel part of something extraordinary.
DINNER
John will be supported by Derek Paravicini as the
accompanist. Derek is blind and very autistic - you can
look him up on Google to see his genius.
Each Challenger Company has a table for 10 people and
we will commence the evening with a reception, in the
colonnade adjacent to The Orangery, at 19.00. Dress code
is smart casual and carriages are at 23.00.
SAID Business School, Park End, Oxford OX1 1HP
As the High Sheriff ’s theme for the year is “Engaging the
Business Community”, the list of Challenge events has
to include a business lecture. And we are particularly
lucky to have legendary businessman Allan Leighton
as our speaker and the SAID Business School as our
venue. Each Challenger Company can bring up to 10
guests to the lecture, which will take place on Thursday
11th December, commencing at 16.00 (time to be finally
confirmed later in the year).
Returning to the UK, he became chairman of Pandora where he is now CEO - and joined a number of boards
including Matalan and Pace. His delivery style is unique
and he has the ability to inspire, entertain and provoke.
Allan Leighton is one of the county’s leading business
executives, who coined the expression “Going Plural”
when he left the CEO slot at Asda, having sold the business
to Walmart in 1999. He joined Asda after a successful
career with the Mars Group and his early plural life found
him on a number of UK boards, including The Royal
Mail (where he was chairman), Bhs, Dyson, Lastminute.
com and BSkyB. He has had a long relationship with
the Weston Group of companies and was Chairman of
Selfridges before he moved to Canada to head up Weston’s
leading grocery multiple, Loblaws.
Blenheim have generously allowed us the use of The
Orangery (where we will dine in the evening) and
Marlborough Room complex, which has changing
facilities for those who wish to wear something different
during the evening.

OXFORDSHIRE COMMUNITY
FOUNDATION
ORCHESTRATING
STRONGER LIVES
THINK LOCAL,
GIVE LOCAL
Music for Autism is enhancing quality of life and raising
public awareness through autism-friendly, interactive
concerts developed specifically for individuals with
autism and their families. The concerts, held in the United
States and the United Kingdom, feature professional
musicians, including Tony Award winners, Grammynominated classical artists, and Pulitzer Prize winners.
Established in 1995, Oxfordshire Community Foundation
is committed to improving the lives of Oxfordshire’s most
vulnerable and disadvantaged by inspiring, influencing
and harnessing the energy of individuals, businesses and
organisations to pool their resources and achieve greater
impact by working together to think local, give local.
To ensure equal access for all, every Music for Autism
concert is fully subsidized. Families note that the concerts
help fill a major psychosocial void, enabling them to enjoy
enriching activities that are inclusive and to experience
the joy and power of music as a family.

We support any type of non-profit group that is taking
action to make life better for local people, from urban
to rural, everywhere in Oxfordshire enabling our
communities to thrive.
A typical grant is anything between £500 and £5,000 small yet vital funding that delivers so much more than
simply helping to address social problems that usually
would not come to the notice of local donors or the
public at large. Awards from the Oxfordshire Community
Foundation are often the catalyst enabling local charitable
organisations to develop the confidence needed to raise
their aspirations and go on to achieve scale and access
additional funding from other larger national bodies.

TRANSFORMING LIVES
THROUGH SPORT
Founded in 2004 Access Sport is a dynamic charity whose
mission is to give more children and young people,
particularly in disadvantaged areas, access to a wide range
of quality local sport. Access Sport looks to harness the
proven power of sport to tackle social exclusion, inactivity
and obesity in areas where help is most needed. They
achieve this by empowering the inspirational community
volunteers who set up and run local sports clubs with
cash, expert advice and networking to help create thriving
clubs which get more people positively engaged.
Working with Oxford City Council, the aim is to establish
a post in Oxford which will develop 15 community sports
clubs that target young people living in disadvantaged
areas to enable them to access more sport and life
changing personal development opportunities.

Blackwell’s is the leading academic bookseller in the
UK with shops serving higher education institutions
across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
It has built an international reputation for book selling
excellence with links to academic institutions and
libraries around the globe.
Today Blackwell’s has been trading for 135 years from its
world-famous flagship store on Broad Street in Oxford.
Blackwell’s booksellers are renowned for their expertise,
depth of knowledge and love of books, a tradition which
has been maintained since the first Blackwell shop opened
its doors in 1879.
The original shop at 50 Broad Street was only 12 feet
square meaning, at times, the proprietor would actually
have to step onto the street to allow customers to browse!
The shop was taken over by ‘The Gaffer’, Sir Basil Blackwell
after the death of Benjamin in 1924 and continued to be
expanded for another 60 years under his guidance. In
1956 Basil was knighted and remains the only bookseller
to ever have received a knighthood. During these years,
notable figures to have worked with Basil include Vivien
Greene, wife Graham, Dorothy L Sayers who became his
personal assistant and a new author named J R R Tolkien.

the next few years. There are 4 floors of books covering
all subjects and over 70 members of staff who have a
collective experience of over 800 years – about the same

world of e-Reading in 2012 by striking a deal with Barnes
and Noble to sell the Nook.
Booker Wholesale is the UK’s leading food & drink
wholesaler, serving over 500,000 customers nationwide

has during it’s history hosted signings with Muhammad
Ali, David Attenborough and most recently Simon
Schama. The company is rapidly keeping up with the
ever changing demands of the book buying public. Its
online presence pre-dates by some years other brasher but
better known offerings and as the world of reading and
publishing evolves in the brave new world you can be sure
that Blackwell’s for all its traditional image will be at the
forefront of these changes.

ByBox is brilliant. If you are a field technician, chances
are you will collect your day’s work from one of our 30,000
lockers installed across the UK. Why? Because we deliver
over 80% of the UK’s spare parts into our lovely lockers
that are installed everywhere from Truro to Inverness
– and most places in between. And it all happens in the
middle of the night – making our distribution and locker
network like the tooth fairy for spare parts.
A B O U T C P M U K LT D
Delivering into lockers is also a great idea for online
shopping. If you’re not in when the delivery driver calls,
you can arrange for the parcel to go to your local ByBox
(typically only a couple of miles away). And we’re not
just busy in the UK. We also sell lockers and software to
international postal operators and carriers. Israel, New
Zealand, South Africa, France, Benelux, the US and so on.
CPM is the world’s largest outsourced sales organisation
and one of Europe’s leading contact centres. With over

designs and delivers effective multi-channel customer
contact strategies for some of the world’s biggest brands.
ByBox launched 15 years ago in Silicon Valley, California.
Today – we employ over 500 people and turnover $120m.
In 2013 CPM scooped 10 awards and accreditations
including the Field Marketing & Brand Experience
Awards for Outsourced Sales Performance of the Year and
Perfect Service. In the same year CPM’s commitment to
developing brilliant people was recognised with the Silver
Level Investors in People accolade and the IGD John
Sainsbury Award for Learning and Development.
Over the years, CPM has provided volunteers for Comic

Just listening to our customers talking, you’d be forgiven
if your first impression was that Milton Park was
simply a thriving village in the heart of the Oxfordshire
countryside, rather than one of Europe’s largest and most
diverse business communities.
Of course, we’re really proud that our world-class
premises and flexible leases accommodate a wide range of
businesses, from small start-ups through to trans-global
corporations, and that our exceptionally convenient
location makes us a natural first choice for companies
who value both national and international travel links.
At Milton Park, however, there is a lot more happening.
With 6,800 people and over 200 successful businesses,
having such a large and eclectic variety of companies and
individuals really inspired us to create an environment
that is inclusive, as well as exclusive.

We believe that by ensuring you have more than enough
hours in the day for business and pleasure, we work to
create a successful environment. With this in mind,
Milton Park’s on-site amenities encompass everything
from the beauticians to the brasserie, and because we aim
to meet everyone’s needs, there is also an outstanding
fitness centre, complete with pool and sports hall; a
nursery for the little ones; 25 urban garden plots, ready to
grow delicious, fresh produce; free shuttle bus; and plenty
of places to eat and drink.
We also take great pleasure in organising a wide range
of events and activities where companies can make
connections and have a great time being part of our
community.

THE ROLE OF
THE HIGH
SHERIFF
The Office of High Sheriff is an independent nonpolitical Royal appointment for a single year. The
origins of the office date back to Saxon times, when
the ‘Shire Reeve’ was responsible to the king for the
maintenance of law and order within the shire, or
county, and for the collection and return of taxes
due to the crown. Today, there are 55 High Sheriffs
serving the counties of England and Wales each year. Whilst the duties of the role have evolved over time,
supporting the crown and the judiciary remain central
elements of the role today. In addition, many High
Sheriffs also assist community foundations and local
charities working with vulnerable and other people both
in endorsing and helping to raise the profile of their
valuable work. High Sheriffs receive no remuneration and
no part of the expense of a High Sheriff ’s year falls on the
public purse. TONY STRAT TON
Tony and wife Di have lived in Oxfordshire for 38 years,
moving from Wiltshire in 1976 when Tony joined CPM in
Thame. Appointed to the CPM board in 1980, he became
MD in 1989, CEO in 1990 and non-executive Chairman
in 2013. Retiring from CPM at the end of 2012, he is
now Chairman Emeritus, a role that enables him to stay
involved as an ambassador and advisor.
As CPM’s non-executive Chairman, Tony was able to
develop other interests and became a non-executive
director of several companies, including The Smollan
Group in South Africa and IMS in Russia. He was a
founding director of Tonic Life Communications – a PR
company successfully sold in 2009 – and The Quantic
Group where he is still Chairman. He is also Chairman
of bChannels – a specialist agency serving clients in the
technology sector.
In 2004 Tony joined the board of Oxford Inspires,
Oxfordshire’s cultural development agency, becoming
Chair in 2006, overseeing the merger with Visit Oxford
in 2011 that resulted in the creation of Experience
Oxfordshire. Currently a Deputy Lieutenant of
Oxfordshire, he serves as a member of the Oxford
Institute of Retail Management Advisory Board, a trustee
of Oxford Brookes Student Union and is a Liveryman in
the Worshipful Company of Marketors and a member of
the Marketing Group of Great Britain.
His interests revolve around sport and culture and his
passion is rugby union. A regular at Twickenham to
support the English rugby team, he has managed to attend
every Rugby World Cup semi-final and final, with the
exceptions of 1987 and 2011 when the finals were played
in New Zealand. In 2004 he chaired the Benefit Year for
Matt Dawson, which raised £430k, including a donation
of £50k to NSPCC. He enjoys most musical genres,
especially modern jazz.
Tony married Dian Baker in 1971 in Malmesbury Abbey,
the door of which forms the crest of his Coat of Arms,
reflecting both 42 years of marriage and his interest in
church architecture. They live in Oxford, have one son,
R-J and three grandchildren – Maisie, Alfie and Elliott,
all recognized in the design of the shield within his Coat
of Arms.
34
High Sheriffs are entitled to apply for a grant of Arms, which is visually represented by a design of
Arms, illustrating important elements in High Sheriff ’s life. Tony and Di married in Malmesbury
Abbey, the south door of which forms the crest of his Coat of Arms, reflecting both 42 years of
marriage and his interest in church architecture. The 3 rugby balls illustrate his passion for rugby
and his 3 grandchildren. The three crosses equate to connections, relationships and distribution,
as in “Distributive Trade” with the colours and wavy line taken from the Arms of Oxfordshire
and Wiltshire, his home county. His motto – Enitere et Praesta – translates as Strive and Exceed.
