Kumulipo Theater
Multimedia Object Theater (2006)
‘Imiloa Astronomy Center of Hawaii
Hilo, Hawaii
Science North, in partnership with AldrichPears Associates in
Vancouver and The Taylor Group in Toronto provided exhibition
design-build services for the new ‘Imiloa Astronomy Center of
Hawaii. This group of Canadian firms designed, fabricated and
installed the exhibits and theaters for this world-class center.
Science North produced an object theater that is an artistic and
sensory re-enactment of the Kumulipo. The experience transports
audiences into another world where they journey back to the origins
of life. Ingrained in this story of origins is the story of Piko, which
celebrates the connection and continuity between Hawaiians, the
islands, and the diversity of life. The theater brings the story to life
with dramatic visuals and an immersive environment. Compelling
chant and stimulating lights and sounds tell the Hawaiian story of
creation in a theatrical and entertaining way.
