MCCA receives $15,000 Delta
Dental Foundation Grant
MCCA has received a $15,000 Delta Dental Foundation Grant to support a project intended to improve
access to dental services and improve oral health for
all Monona County residents.
Terri Chandler, RDH, the Founder/Executive
Director of Future Smiles will serve as the project’s
consultant. Ms. Chandler will be working with a local
planning group to complete a comprehensive assessment of community need. This assessment will
provide an ability to assess options that will improve
Monona County oral health and dental access.
The local planning group’s recommended actions
resulting from this grant have the potential to be submitted for consideration of an expanded Delta Dental
Foundation grant request in the amount of $50,000
- $100,000. This money would be used for implementation strategies.

MCCA receives Monona Co.
Partner Foundation Grant
Over the last few months, the Monona County
Community Alliance- ERASE group has gotten some
exciting news. We were awarded a Monona County
Partners Foundation Grant for $3795.
The members plan to initiate a youth group and
conduct a Town Hall meeting on drug abuse. We have
also been conducting Responsible Beverage Service
Trainings using the TIPS curriculum. Blackbird Bend
recently signed on for the training to be mandatory
for all their staff.
There will be three trainings offered and conducted
by our trainer, Linnea Fletcher from Jackson
Recovery Centers, in order to get everyone trained.
We are very excited about this opportunity! We also
will have a booth out at the Monona County fair
with various materials featuring the Social Host
Ordinance, Underage, and Binge media campaign.
Come out and say hello!

Success Story....
“Earth Awareness Month”
In early April, the Monona County Board of Supervisors and
Onawa Mayor, Bob Skelton proclaimed the month of April as
“Earth Awareness Month.” The culminating activity, Monona
County Earth Awareness Celebration Day was held on Saturday,
April 27 at two locations in Onawa.
At the WIPCO parking lot, an e-waste collection ended a month
long effort in five Monona County towns. Over 19,500 pounds of
e-waste was collected by Recycletronics. Through a combination
of recycling and harvesting the metals, the money Recycletronics
makes helps disabled veterans. American Mobile Shredding
service was on-site, providing free document destruction.
This service was funded by the Monona County Conservation
Board, as an environmental education activity. Additionally, the
Monona County Transfer station provided a trailer for cardboard
disposal.
At the Monona County Arboretum visitors experienced the
ISU’s Conservation Station, were gifted with an ISU Extension
reusable tote bag, sampled homemade goodies from the 4-H
cooking club, viewed displays of items made from recycled plastics
and static displays, and could purchase mats made from recycled
materials created by consumers at CrossRoads of Western Iowa.
Throughout the month of April, residents were able to dispose
of e-waste and used cell phones at multiple locations in Monona
County. Security National Bank provided free secure document
shredding as part of Mapleton’s clean up days.
As part of the month long collection of recyclables, over 50
used ink cartridges and toners were provided to the Onawa Public
Library for its ongoing fundraiser, and 100 used cell phones
were collected for Cell Phones for Soldiers. Those are recycled/
repurposed and the funds pay for international calling for
deployed troops.
Learning for Life
Neighborhood Health &
Safety Fair
The families who attended
the 2nd Annual Learning for
Life Neighborhood Health and
Safety Fair at the MVAO High
School from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.
had a wonderful time! Monona County Public Health in
conjunction with the Monona
County Community Alliance
(MCCA) and a host of community partners and community

service groups throughout

rescue dog, Chip.
hosted this Health and Safety
Fair for parents of children from birth through age 12.
This family fun day was made possible by the Community Partnerships for Protecting Children through the Harrison, Monona
and Shelby Decatorization project area and the Neighborhood
Networking Grant.
Parents were provided with a wealth of information regarding
health and safety tips and services available to them in Monona
County as well as dental, hearing and vision screens for the kids
and free child ID cards.
The kids also enjoyed the games and activities of face painting,
balloon creations, make your own bookmark, and decorate a drinking cup as well as hopscotch, beanbag toss, basketball, ring toss,
fitness dice, dart-ball, bowling, ladder toss, hula-hoops, and spring
balls.
This year we were also fortunate to have two guest speakers from
the Council on Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence. Jane Griesel
addressed bullying and Cathy VanMaanen spoke about Darkness to
Light – 7 steps to protecting our children by preventing, recognizing and reacting responsibly to child sexual abuse. Both parents
and community partners were impressed by these presentations.
We asked parents what they liked best about the Health and
Safety Fair that their comments included: “Rescue dogs, child ID
cards, firemen, policeman, tour of the ambulance, the fire truck,
Red Cross display, hearing tests, face painting, balloon animals and
hats, all the games, a lot of good information for parents and fun
for the kids. The speakers were great!” Parents also commented
about the wide variety of community partners represented and they
learned about services they didn’t know existed in Monona County.
Eighteen door prizes were given away including: convertible car
seat; child booster car seat; tricycle; bikes and helmet; Radon kit;
fire extinguisher and smoke detector and more.
Unfortunately, the weather didn’t cooperate and the rain cut
down on the crowd; but we appreciate all the families and community partners who attended, and the great volunteers who donated
their time and talents to make this year’s Health and Safety Fair a
success!
