Here he explores the “Late Style” of the composers of the romantic era: music of stunning beauty, fragility, and desolation, bound in deep nostalgia and pathos in view of the approaching end. Leif Ove Andsnes / Marc-André Hamelin THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 2, 2017, 7:30PM Herbst Theatre | $70/$55/$40 His San Francisco Performances debut in 2011 performing the complete Shostakovich Preludes and Fugues was a moving and profound event, prompting SF Classical Voice to marvel at his “extraordinary array of tone colors, his intense eloquence, and his adroitly flexing tempos. Melnikov’s adventurous approach… kept even the most indifferent listeners spellbound.” 2 4 Globe and Mail “Biss reached an authentic core that communicated integrity and authenticity.” —Los Angeles Times Biss’ recital is part of Late Style, a series exploring the final works of great composers in four different programs this season. SFPERFORMANCES.ORG Salons at the Rex is one of San Francisco Performances’ longest-running alternative concert series and is reminiscent of the days when artists performed in intimate spaces for a small group of friends. Audiences learn about music in a convivial atmosphere from Bay Area artists who share their playing, love of their craft, and intriguing stories about their careers. SALONS take place in the historic Union Square Hotel Rex’s 75-seat room adjacent to their “Library Bar.” Intended to be a welcome after-work one hour event, we encourage you to discover this romantic notion of salon life with a drink in hand and the company of a friend.
