Dear Friends,
Welcome to San Francisco Performances’ 37th season. As President
and Founder and as I look ahead to my retirement in a few months,
this is the last season programmed completely under my leadership. Since the beginning, our constant artistic mission has been
to present internationally acclaimed and emerging performing
artists in chamber music, vocal and instrumental recitals, jazz and
contemporary dance. I am proud of nearly four decades of building
lasting relationships between artists and you, our audience, and of
the many collaborations, partnerships and support that have made
San Francisco Performances an important and vibrant part of the
Bay Area’s cultural life.

A hallmark of our programming from the beginning has been to

and Beatrice Rana, cellists Sol Gabetta and Harriet Krijgh, violinist

David Russell (Feb 25)
In recent years we have selected artists to curate special thematic
programs, and in the upcoming season we again have chosen the
gifted pianist Jonathan Biss. He has programmed a four concert
project, joined by the Brentano Quartet and baritone Mark Padmore,
that he entitles “Late Style,” which is a fascinating study of composers who moved in surprising directions in their last years.

Mark Padmore/Jonathan Biss (Mar 17)
SF (Jan 21, Feb 4, Mar 4, May 13)
In reflecting on the many initiatives developed by San Francisco
Performances over 37 years, I am very proud of the innovative
education programs we have created and especially the ongoing residency since 1990 that we have with the Alexander String

“What effect do years of accumulated
knowledge and experience, combined with,
perhaps, the realization that death is near,
have on artistic creation?” asks pianist and
curator extraordinaire Jonathan Biss. It’s the
central question that has inspired his latest
thought-provoking musical inspection, titled
Late Style.
Biss finds this subject particularly fascinating—as will audiences—because a remarkable
number of composers moved in surprising
directions in their last years. The four concerts
spanning piano, chamber and vocal music
explore the late works of a diverse group of
composers including Gesualdo, Bach, Mozart,
Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann, Brahms,
Chopin, Elgar and Kurtág.

Sir András Schiff returns to his beloved San Francisco with
Schubert’s most lyrical and haunting works, in what can aptly be
described as a song recital without words. Schiff’s keyboard eloquence is well-known to Bay Area audiences, who have packed his
immersive explorations of single composers’ works for many years.

approaching end.

“The Brentanos are a
magnificent string quartet…
This was wonderful, selfless

—The Times (London)
BACH: Selections from Art of the Fugue
ELGAR: Piano Quintet in A minor, Op. 84
GESUALDO: Selected Madrigals
MOZART: String Quintet in E flat Major, K. 614 (with Hsin-Yun
Huang, viola)
Beethoven’s last works in the genres in which he was most prolific
comprise the Oct. 15 program, a rare primer on the composer’s
revolutionary musical language and philosophy. Illuminating
this most profound music is an ensemble “of exceptional insight
and communicative gifts” (Daily Telegraph, London) and pianist
Jonathan Biss.
1
The Oct. 19 program contends with what Jonathan Biss calls
“the various inscrutabilities of composers in their late years.”
Alternating from Bach’s mysterious and unfinished Art of the
Fugue to the joyful and life-affirming signature quintet by Mozart,
this program complicates the valedictory nature of a “late syle.”
2
Dover Quartet / Edgar Meyer, double bass
SUNDAY, OCTOBER 30, 2016, 7:00PM
Herbst Theatre | $65/$55/$40
MOZART: Divertimento for strings, K. 136
ROSSINI: Duo for bass and cello
DVOR̆ÁK: Quartet in F Major, Op. 96, “American”
MEYER: Quintet for strings
The Washington Post asserted that, “lovers of chamber music
should put the Dover Quartet on their to-hear list.” Founded
less than a decade ago, the Dover Quartet leaped into the world
chamber music spotlight when it won all four prizes at the 2013
Banff International Competition. Composer-performer Edgar
Meyer—“the most remarkable virtuoso” (The New Yorker)—is a
shape-shifting genius of an artist equally at home in classical, bluegrass, jazz and world music and a master at melding them together
in compelling compositional style.

Herbst Theatre | $65/$55/$40
SCHUMANN: Fantasiestücke, Op. 73
BRAHMS: Sonata No. 1
PROKOFIEV: Adagio from Cinderella, Op. 97 bis; Sonata in
C Major, Op. 119
SF Performances presents one of Europe’s most sought-after
soloists in this long-awaited debut. Limelight magazine called
Sol Gabetta “an artist who combines intense musicality with a
passionate, engaging presence.” This Argentine firebrand has
blazed an impressive trail since she won the Crédit Suisse Young
Artist Award a decade ago, and is joined by lyrical Italian pianist
Alessio Bax.
2
BACH: Violin Sonata No. 4 in C minor, BWV 1017
BERG: Piano Sonata, Op. 1
BRAHMS: Violin Sonata in A Major, Op. 100
YSAŸE: Solo Violin Sonata No. 5 in G Major, Op. 27
SCHUMANN: Violin Sonata No. 2 in D minor, Op. 121
This “electrifying partnership” of virtuosic equals elevates this
duo recital into the realm of chamber music art. Alina Ibragimova
and Cedric Tiberghien’s decade-long collaboration has already left
its mark in many acclaimed recordings as well as in surveys of the
complete Beethoven and Mozart Sonatas at London’s Wigmore
Hall. A beautifully crafted program offers a glimpse of the individual voices that characterizes this distinctive musical dialogue.

PROGRAM: Works by ANTHEIL, STENHAMMAR, GERSHWIN,
NEWMAN, THOMSON and others to be announced.
Phenomenal trumpet master Håkan Hardenberger—who the
Berlin Morning Post called “an ultrasound virtuoso”—returns to
SF Performances with pianist-composer Roland Pöntinen. Their
recital program mixes modern and contemporary Swedish and
American music inspired by folk, jazz and pop music from both
sides of the Atlantic.
DEBUSSY: Cello Sonata
CHOPIN: Cello Sonata
HAHN: Deux improvisations sur des airs irlandais
FAURÉ: Sonata No. 2

“Ibragimova brings a
ferocious technique, but more
importantly, a chameleon
touch to the music of
extraordinary expressive
breadth. —London Times
“Tiberghien’s technique
is formidable, but it’s
his intensity and poetic
impulsiveness that catch
the ear.” —Boston Globe
“Technically faultless, his tone
was brilliant when required,
but there was also little of the
supple breathiness one might
expect from a jazz soloist,
which brought warmth and
vulnerability.” —The Australian

Sol Gabetta, cello / Alessio Bax, piano
“Acclaimed for his ‘physical,
sensual relationship’ with
his instrument, British cellist
Steven Isserlis is an artist who
combines brilliant technique
with innate feeling.”
—SF Classical Voice
As the New York Times noted, Steven Isserlis’ ability to draw
large audiences “of palpably engaged listeners is a credit to his
estimable skills, enlightened advocacy and communicative powers.” A thrilling tour-de-force written for this passionate colorist by
Thomas Adès crowns a program of French masterpieces.
Save on regular ticket prices when you purchase the entire Virtuosi Series. All four

SHOSTAKOVICH STRING QUARTETS
SATURDAYS AT 10AM / JANUARY 21, FEBRUARY 4, MARCH 4
AND MAY 13
Herbst Theatre | $55/$45/$30
The musical career of Dmitri Shostakovich (1906-1975) mirrored
exactly the rise and history of the Soviet Union from 1917-1975.
He entered the Petrograd Conservatory at the very end of the
Tsarist era; he witnessed the Revolution and began his career
during Lenin’s rule; he was nearly purged twice by Stalin; he flourished under Khrushchev and died while Brezhnev was in power.
Shostakovich was a survivor and a great composer, and his fear
and self-loathing, his courage and experience found their way into
his music. As such, Shostakovich is not just the most important
composer of string quartets and symphonies from the 1920s to the
1970s; even more, he and his music stand as witnesses to the rise
and failures of the Soviet Union, one of the defining events of the
twentieth century.
Join us for the first season of a two-season exploration of
Shostakovich’s string quartets and chamber works. In these days
of resurgent Russian despotism, Shostakovich’s life, experience,
and music offer an extraordinary cautionary tale.

EDUCATION & OUTREACH
Education means engagement and empowerment for audiences
of today and tomorrow. Our education programs seek to expand
and deepen the arts experience for audiences of all ages.
IN SCHOOL PROGRAMS
Since 1989, San Francisco Performances has taken a unique
and intimate approach to arts education in the schools through
its Artist-in-Residency Program. In small, hands-on programs,
our internationally acclaimed resident artists work directly with
students and teachers in Bay Area public schools to enhance
understanding and appreciation of the arts. The scope of these
residencies reflects our commitment to making the arts an
essential part of everyone’s life by: allowing young people of
all backgrounds to experience the joys and excitement of great
music and dance; helping to keep arts education accessible to
all students; and supporting the professional development of
emerging artists and educators.
“In our master class with
Nicholas Phan, I learned how
important it is to not only
connect the lyrics of a song
to parts of your own life, but
to implement the feelings
and emotions that those
connections bring up. I also
learned that sometimes these
feelings can be expressed
in multiple ways; dynamics,
word stress, or others. Thank
you!”

Saturday Mornings In San Francisco
SHOSTAKOVICH STRING QUARTETS
SATURDAYS AT 10AM / JANUARY 21, FEBRUARY 4, MARCH 4
AND MAY 13
Herbst Theatre | $55/$45/$30
The musical career of Dmitri Shostakovich (1906-1975) mirrored
exactly the rise and history of the Soviet Union from 1917-1975.
He entered the Petrograd Conservatory at the very end of the
Tsarist era; he witnessed the Revolution and began his career
during Lenin’s rule; he was nearly purged twice by Stalin; he flourished under Khrushchev and died while Brezhnev was in power.
Shostakovich was a survivor and a great composer, and his fear
and self-loathing, his courage and experience found their way into
his music. As such, Shostakovich is not just the most important
composer of string quartets and symphonies from the 1920s to the
1970s; even more, he and his music stand as witnesses to the rise
and failures of the Soviet Union, one of the defining events of the
twentieth century.
Join us for the first season of a two-season exploration of
Shostakovich’s string quartets and chamber works. In these days
of resurgent Russian despotism, Shostakovich’s life, experience,
and music offer an extraordinary cautionary tale.

EDUCATION & OUTREACH
Education means engagement and empowerment for audiences
of today and tomorrow. Our education programs seek to expand
and deepen the arts experience for audiences of all ages.
IN SCHOOL PROGRAMS
Since 1989, San Francisco Performances has taken a unique
and intimate approach to arts education in the schools through
its Artist-in-Residency Program. In small, hands-on programs,
our internationally acclaimed resident artists work directly with
students and teachers in Bay Area public schools to enhance
understanding and appreciation of the arts. The scope of these
residencies reflects our commitment to making the arts an
essential part of everyone’s life by: allowing young people of
all backgrounds to experience the joys and excitement of great
music and dance; helping to keep arts education accessible to
all students; and supporting the professional development of
emerging artists and educators.
“In our master class with
Nicholas Phan, I learned how
important it is to not only
connect the lyrics of a song
to parts of your own life, but
to implement the feelings
and emotions that those
connections bring up. I also
learned that sometimes these
feelings can be expressed
in multiple ways; dynamics,
word stress, or others. Thank
you!”
—SF Girls Chorus student
