CUBAN LEGENDS
uban Legends brings
together years of combined performance andrecording experience in
traditional Cuban music, Jazz, R &
B, Pop and Rock.
Oscar Salas envisioned this project
during the filming and recording
of Antoni Ansarov’s documentary
“Lagrimas Negras”, a film detailing the experiences of exiled Cuban musicians living in the United
States going as far back as the
60’s.
Paquito, Flaco and Oscar were involved in it. Their Cuban roots and

the elements of Jazz forever entwined, he called Paquito, Flaco,
Raphael and Felix and Cuban Legends was born.
This is the tale of two cultures
coming together, of a migration
with roots still firmly on both sides
of the 90 mile stretch that separates both shorelines. This is the
story of five musicians who have
been friends for over four decades
and musically tell their story
Paquito Hechevarria
Pianist
Paquito played with the celebrated
bands of Havana in the 1950’s.
In the 1960’s Paquito backed up
Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis, Jr.
and other international stars who
performed in the famed Boom
Boom Room on Miami Beach. In
the mid-eighties, he formed the
band Grupo Wal-Pa-Ta-Ca with
Israel Cachao Lopez. One of his
most recognizable riffs is in the
introduction to the Miami Sound
Machine’s hit-tune Conga.

Oscar’s style is unequivocally original, he melds the sounds of the
rumba he heard on the streets of
Havana with the R & B sounds he
learned as an exile in Miami. He
has lectured about the history of
Afro-Cuban percussion at the Historical Museum of South Florida,
and composed music for a number
stage plays.
Nelson Flaco Padron
Drummer-percussionist
Nelson started performing on percussion in Havana. In South Florida, he performed and/or recorded
with Dizzy Gillespie, Ramsey Lewis, Arturo Sandoval, Mongo Santamaria, Andy Gibb, James Brown,

FALSETA

xplosive, bold and fresh,
are a few words that spring
to mind while watching
Miami based band Falseta play during their live set. A
solidified sound force, they musically tease with ease, taking you on
a journey of melodies, harmonies
and heavy rifts, all neatly wrapped
in the astounding showmanship of
seasoned professionals.
Yet trying to describe the band’s
signature sound isn’t quite as easy.
“Falseta is aggressive polyrhythmic music combined with melodic
expect. If you happened to catch
Pablo Malco’s Hip Hop Symphony
at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts earlier this year, you
would have seen Falseta perfectly at home on the large theater’s
stage.
“Falseta has a certain drive behind
their music that draws in several
different genres of music lovers.
When I first heard them rehearsing
it sounded like a concert - the melodies, the hard knocking but funky
drum patterns, and the clean yet
grungy guitars,” says Malco, direc-
live,” he explains. “So I went on a
mission to try to find, more than
anything, not just good musicians
to be in the band, but good musicians that were good friends and
fans of my music.”
Those good friends which would
complete the Falseta Family would
be guitarist Vishnu Saiz (whom Bernal calls his “musical glue”), bassist Leo Zitto, vocalist Marcus Fernandes and guitarist CesarPadron.
“Their talent, energy and love for
the project is what brings it all
together,” says Bernal. Qualities
which clearly transmit during their
live shows, where shouts of “Falseta” echo out from fans.
The band is currently adding the
finishing touches to their first
EP,recorded in Bazooka Studios
with John Garcia.
Self producing the album, they
have decided to pay tribute to an
old band project which had almost
the same line up as Falseta does
today. Perfecta, their much awaited debut EP, is due out at the end
of this year.

Bernal, drummer and creative driving force behind Falseta, says with
a laugh. Although slightly confusing in its description, once experienced, it makes perfect sense.

international performance troupe

Academy. “After speaking to the
guys, it was apparent to me that
they were the real deal - true artists. They are simply the best.”
After its inception in late 2008,
the band went through various line
ups until Bernal finally found the
perfect musicians to bring his creations to life.
It is this winning combination
which has sparked interest in not
only musicians and local rock fans,
but also in places one might not

orn and raised in South
Florida, educated in private schools where she
was the victim of social
privilege, Melissa Markowitz was
always aware that, for some reason, she had a different kind of social consciousness from her peers.
Unlike a social conscience, which
relates to economic and political
awareness, social consciousness
relates to the manner in which people relate to themselves and each
other. As a high school student,
16
www.miamitalentmag.com
she didn’t frame that thought consciously, she merely knew that she
was “way” different from the people around her.
Once she escaped from the privileged environment of the private
school milieu, and landed in a liberal college campus, she realized
that she perceived social relationships from a completely different
perspective. She is something of a
comedian, with a droll, dry sense
of humor that is often expressed
through personal rebellion, which
often creates a wonderful cognitive dissonance when the audience
contrasts her youthful, innocent
appearance with some of the blatant themes with which she works.
Comedians often extract the content for their subject matter from
the circumstances of their lives.
They compile sets of rivaling lyrics to metaphorically and humorously compare their personal lives
with the lives of the people around
them, comparing the internal “I”
with the outside “they”. Melissa’s
underlying focus drives itself from
human interaction and the humor
cantors itself from her satirical
intentions. Her intentions are not
to be rile but the most humorous
scenes excrete themselves from inferior interrogation.
The awkward, unspoken moments
between people trying to communicate has become a large inspiration. Melissa begins with the
facial expression, or narrative and
branches the physical relationship
downward, reacting with the psychological interaction with the environmental setting. Since childhood, she has been an observer of
human formalities. Whether it be
facial or physical, the inner state of
emotional thought often becomes
transparent to her. The work she
www.miamitalentmag.com
makes is constantly fed from her
perceptions. Her work gravitates
towards social abnormalities. She
prefers to focus on characters that
are oblivious to their surroundings,
not paying attention to the opinion
of another, completely immersed
in their own world.
Her passion is to conjure characters not outwardly realizing their
friend or foe observation. These
characters become a family of unknowns. The characters she creates are totally submersed in their
own world, something she truly
desires to achieve. Each character and narrative are an anomaly
of what she desires to become in
some state. Every flaw she cautiously suppresses finds itself veining through her characters.

ark’s early artworks were
inspired by classical music which was emphasized as she was learning
to play violin, living close to New
York’s Lincoln Centre. Her vibrant
series of Violinist and Cellist paintings continue to be well received.
The earliest paintings, from the
Galaxy series, sold immediately
when finished – even before the
paint completely dried.
Much of her inspiration comes
from childhood in South Korea,
raised as a suburbanite in neighbourhoods filled with spring cherry
blossoms, sky-filled stars in the
summer nights, lazy days with
dragonflies criss-cross through
pure blue skies, the cornucopia of
colours contained in autumn foliage, along with the white wonderland of winter.
Some of her earlier works show a
visual inspiration from her recollection of her visit to Europe and
most prominently, the Versailles
Palace. Park was also influenced
by Leo Tolstoy, Claude Monet,
Mozart, Chopin and Sarah Chang
– the Korean-American violin virtuoso. Sarah’s passion propelled
her move to New York City, long
considered the universe’s centre
for aspiring artists. As an accomplished child poet, Park’s paintings are inevitably poetic, with an
astronomical influence, where the
stars of the universe will be forever
captured in her heart.
Park is also a fashion designer
for “Confident Couture” a clothing manufacturer with world-wide
distribution.

including Salsa and Improvisation.
Johnny is the permanent guest artist in the professional programs
of the World Class Orchestra and
the Dance Director for World Class

Johnny maintains a very active
career as a freelance dancer and
solo performer as well as being a
master teacher and innovating a
44
completely new dance technique
done on one leg. Johnny is a master at the art of improvisation and
draws huge crowds that chant El
Electrico as he dances. Women
line up for the opportunity to just
dance part of a song as the next
lady waits her turn. El Electrico is
a vibrant and passionate dancer
that has his roots in music, also an
accomplished percussionist performing with the best musicians in
South Florida.
El Electrico is able to dance with or
without music and is a crowd stopper and total showman, revered for
his talents and known wherever he
goes. El Electrico is featured by
many Bands and Musicians.
The most recognized achievement
of Johnny Rivera is the creation of
a modern dance technique that
he has mastered, the One Legged
Dance and that dance move has
most dancers spellbound as he has
mastered the art of perfect balance
while hopping and spinning on either leg and systematically switching from both legs to one and back,
this approach to bringing a new
technique to dance is a total mind/
body connection that very few have
even attempted and yet not only
has El Electrico mastered this art
www.miamitalentmag.com
but he is continually adding to the
possibilities of all that can be accomplished on both one and two
legs.
Within the framework of the innovative techniques that El Electrico
has created are his expressive gestures that are done whilst performing as he connects with the music
and the performing musician or
band. El Electrico covers a vast
amount of area in his performance,
utilizing objects as subjects to be
danced around, bringing the audience in to the mix and allowing
other dancers to share the experience, pro and novice.
El Electrico is relentless in his pursuits to dance and bring out the
dancing nature of those that want
to learn as well as making connections in the dance world and music
scene. Johnny is intent on exploring new music as this allows him
to respond with new dance moves
that flow through him. Johnny is
www.miamitalentmag.com
interested in attending events that
feature him and his dancing. As a
performer, Johnny is documenting
his talent through a series of videotapes and is preparing a documentary about his dance innovations in
the effort of passing on his teaching methods through instructional
videotapes on his modern dance
techniques.
Rivera aka El Electrico and the media attention he receives each year
is one of the reasons why the participation in events featuring this
phenomenal dancer has grown so
dramatically.
People call out his name, chanting his name and the ladies are
relentlessly calling out, “OH! El
Electrico!”
When it comes to showing corporate and individual support for
your event, El Electrico, the Dancing Sensation is without equal. El
Electrico started dancing as a very
young child and ten years ago decided to make Dancing a full-time
occupation. The El Electrico fan
base has grown each year, both in
size and scope.
This year El Electrico will be seen
by an excess of 100,000 people in
his live performances.Everywhere
he goes, people tell him that the
highlight of the event is the vibrancy and enthusiasm of Johnny

They have performed for Beatle

South Florida Beatles Tribute Band that uniquely
captures the look, and excitement of a real Beatles concert
that most people haven’t had the
pleasure to experience.
The Beatlemaniax are Marc Sternberg, who does a remarkably authentic job as the late, great John
Lennon, on guitars, vocals, harmonica, and
keyboards; Orlin
Stoyanov on lead guitar, 12-string
guitar and vocals who does an exceptional job impersonating the
late “quiet Beatle”, George Harrison; Louie Diana keeping that

The Beatlemaniax also wear the
unique style clothing and hair that
their mentors wore during their
concert career, and play the same
brand and model instruments the
Beatles used. With their authentic
hairstyle, clothes, and instruments,
it’s like going back in time to the
craziness and hysteria of Beatlemania. The Beatlemaniax perform
