villa Emo
the villa
It was built, most probably, during the years
1557-1560 and fresced between the 1561-1565.
The model is the one of Villa-Farm, already tasted
in villa Badoer in Fratta Polesine and Villa Barbaro
in Maser;
• the main body of the building reserved to patrician’s
residence, formed by a classic pronaos with four
doric columns, by one vestibule, by one hall and by
three rooms placed symmetrically on sides;
• the laterals Barchesse, designed to include, as
Palladio say “the cellars, the barns, the stalls;…
into the extremity there are two dovecotes, useful
to the master and ornament for the place, and in
every situation you can get under cover”, thanks
to long arcades with eleven arches each.
Palladio’s ability has been to comply with the
requests of the customer, using very economical
building’s materials, such as bricks and plaster,
simulating ashiar-works and precious’s marbles,
but also transferring into lines and shapes,
reduced to the essential, harmony’s ideals and
classic proportions. About in the middle of ‘700
radicals restorations have chanced the
Barchesse’s function, becoming a high-class
residence. In the XIX century also the garden
changed the original Renaissance look into
romantic variation.

frescoes
The noble floor’s interiors are frascoed by Battista
Zelotti (1526-1579), already Veronese’s partner and
collaborator (Sala del Consiglio Dei Dieci and
Library Marciana’s ceiling in Venice) and engaged
into Palladio’s yards of Villa Godi and of
Malcontenta. The extraordinary cycle of frescoes
(1565) represents episodes taken from roman
mythology and history and allegories that, almost
as a Christian’s values anticipation, exalt the
passion’s control and the practice of the conuigal’s
virtue, according to a cultural model of the new
landed aristocracy. In the decorative festoons are
represented some Indian corn’s spikes, the
cultivation of “the new word”, that will find an
early “hospitality” in Emo’s land.
the customer
The VILLA was built during the years 1557-1560,
when Palladio was accepted by the big aristocratic
venetian families, above all after Villa Barbaro in
Maser and Villa Badoer in Fratta experiences, with
which Villa Emo shares the general planning out.
The customer is Leonardo Emo (1532-1586), the
man who married Cornelia Grimani in the 1565,
Francesco Badoer’s nephew, the man who
ordered Villa Badoer in Fratta Polesine.
As family’s tradition, he held prestigious positions
in Serenissima’s magistrature, becoming Podestà
in Chioggia, head of health, Savio alle Decime,
director of Nova justice, Savio alla Mercantia and,
in the end, Member of Senate.
the property
During 450 years the Villa belonged to Emo’s
family, of ancient origins, living in Venice already
during the 997, maybe removed from Greece, and
counted in the patricians’ rank during the year
1297.During the year 2005 became Credito
Trevigiano’s property. They believe in their “social
responsibility” and they want to protect this
”humanity’s patrimony” from speculations giving
it back a new economic function(the farm has
become the bank’s directional center)and a more
modern cultural and socio-environmental
function.
the barchesse
They are aligned to the master’s house, in a
unique linear unity never seen before in
architecture. They have eleven arcades, close by
two higher and drawed back dovecotes. Their
function is well described by Palladio himself:
“In every situation you can get under cover….as
neither rain nor hot sun of the summer doesn’t
prevent the master to go and see his “negotii”.
They are really useful to shelter wood and other
Villa’s objects from the rain…and they are a
precious ornament.” In the original project and
during the first realization they were divided from
master’s house with two crossing arches, one
on each side .The arches were closed during the
year 1774,when the Barchesse were transformed
in a high-class residence.
the village
The ancient village, built southwards long an
axis parallel to the Villa, on the other side of
the street, shows perfectly the rural and country
atmosphere long ago. During the period from
April to October, in the east part of the village
there are manifestations, exhibitions, theatre
shows, catering services and suggestive
commemorations. Near the village there is
a wide parking.
the silk mill
Once this part of the Villa was used for silkworm
breeding and it conserves the name of his ancient
function: the silk mill.
At the ground floor there is a very suggestive
room with glass instead of wall that permits you
to have a fantastic view of the boundary wall
made of stones and bricks.
concerts
Villa Emo, thanks to its magnificence, offers a
unique scenery to prepare shows and musical
concerts. There are different solutions: the
Barchesse can hold 280seats each and they offer
a very good performance for their perfect acoustic.
In summer you can enjoin the concert in the Villa’s
aia, that can hold 400seats and offers a fantastic
perspective view by the central flight of steps.
Another solution, realizable only in special
occasions and with the cultural property
supervision permit, is using the central hall
inside the Villa that can hold 90 guests.
country civilization’s collection
During the second part of the twentieth century
Barbara Steven, Lorenzo Emo’s wife, putting
together farm’s utensils and machines and other
objects from Val Padana creating a real museum
of country’s life and arts.
Once the collection was in the loft of the farm,
now after the restoration, it is on a store, from
which objects, utensils, instruments are taken
to been showed during themes exhibitions in
occasion of programmed events in the village.
meetings / congresses
The main body of the building prolongs itself
in two specular “barchesse” of 232, 65mq each,
both of them can hold 280 seats for conventions,
conferences and cultural initiatives with a very
good audio-visual solution.
The Barchessa east can be also used for catering
service or for products exhibition. The best period
to use the Barchesse is from April to October.
On the other hand, the silk-mill can hold
meetings, conventions for a maximum capacity
of 130 people.
catering
It’s possible to have a catering service, buffet
or table , whether outside, under Barchessa’s
east portico or inside into the three rooms close
to the Barchessa east, air-conditioned in every
seasons, with a capacity of 50 seats each.
Infact you can have five tables in every rooms.
The three rooms extend themselves from left to
right respectively for 58,46 59,57 59,20 mq.
