Dear K4J Guide,
I once heard a conversion story that I found very interesting. An intelligent college woman who had
been raised with little moral guidance adopted the philosophy that there was no real truth in the world.
She saw no other option that seemed both consistent and logical. She shared this with a very wise Catholic
professor. The professor wrote her belief on the board: “Nothing is true.” Then she asked the young
woman, “Is this statement true or false?” The woman realized that whether she said it was true or false, her
philosophical foundation for life collapsed. So began her journey to the Catholic Church.
This story is a reminder to us that truth exists independently of us. We can choose to believe it and live
accordingly or not, but we will never be truly happy until we live by God’s standards instead of our own.
When I was a newly married woman, I thought that the Church was an institution that merely offered an
opinion to help us live moral lives. When I accepted that the Church was Christ’s authority on earth, my
whole life changed. I could learn and live truth. And I discovered freedom, because it is hard to come up
with a moral law on your own that makes sense. I found it way too stressful to try to live that way! Children have to value truth in order to be happy. This month’s Sea Scroll Scholar Mission helps kids
learn to search for truth. They are taught that the Church teaches us truth about our faith and morals. The
main focus, however, is on God’s truth present in Scripture, particularly in the Old Testament. K4J kids learn
that archeological evidence can help us humanly verify the contents of Scripture. Most important, kids learn
that they can discover God’s truth when they study his Word found in Scripture. Pre-K4Jers are introduced
to the idea that God’s truth can be found in written form in the Holy Bible. They understand that Jesus is
the Good Shepherd who watches over us all when they play the Good Shepherd Game and learn Psalm 23
to share with others. God’s Word presents us with truth that guides us in life. As the January Mission song says,
“I want to be a Sea Scroll Scholar!”

How It Works:
The dynamics of each club are unique. You are the expert at deciding which activities best fit the needs of your club. K4J
offers some extra guidance by recommending certain activities for pre-K4J (pre-school - first grade). The pre-K4J station
activities should be held at a location separate from K4J activities.
Overview:
1. Opening Assembly: The Opening
Assembly activity is led by an adult MC
and Captains of K4J (grades 6-8).
2. Station Rotation: The four Club
Meeting Rotation Stations are led as a
rotation by Station Leaders. The stations
include Missionaries in Motion, Get
Moving Games, Cool Craft/Apostles in
Action*, and Saints & Scripture.
Assistance may be offered by Captains
(grades 6-8) at the stations.
3. Snack Time! Kids make and enjoy a
theme-related snack.
K4J Club Meeting
• Divide your large group into teams of up to 8-10 children. Each team chooses a team name and works
together throughout the year.
• Choose which activity will be featured at each station.
Station Leaders set up activities in the station rotation
space.
• A K4J Guide (adult volunteer) is assigned to each team
of 8-10 kids. As the kids arrive, the K4J Guides collect
kids’ mission cards from the previous month. After the
opening assembly, Guides move their teams from
station to station. He/She makes sure that each
member of the team knows the activity’s objective.
The goal of the K4J Guide is to help each child realize
that the virtue and Mission of the Month may be lived
as a personal commitment to Jesus.
* K4J Apostles (grades 4 & 5) meet twice each month.
They are introduced to a K4J Apostles service activity
during the first meeting in place of Cool Craft. They will
meet a second time to finish this apostolic work. The
goal of this station is to teach teamwork and give each
child the opportunity to use their time and talents to
help the Church and their community. This station is key
to the success of this age group.

“Sea Scroll Scholars”
Prepare
• Songs “I’ve Got A Mission” and the January Mission song, “Sea Scroll Scholar”
• MC dressed in shepherd’s clothing
• 2 Captains dressed as shepherds
• Captains acting as sheep/goats
• Captain dressed as a trader and another dressed as a scholar
• Rolls of paper to serve as the sea scrolls
• Set: rocks and suspenseful background music (optional)
Perform
Play the SONG “I’VE GOT A MISSION” from the K4J Song CD.
MC: I have a true story for you. One day in 1947, a boy/shepherd named Fox was herding
goats near the Dead Sea. Captain on stage herding goats. His goat Gruffy ran off. Captain
(as a goat) runs away from the shepherd.
Fox: COME BACK YOU CRAZY GOAT! Fox shows the audience his worried face and runs after the goat.
MC: While fox is searching for Gruffy, he is joined by his friend. The boys are looking
everywhere for Gruffy. They search through the field, and behind every rock. Captains dressed
as Fox and his friend make gestures to signal that they are searching.
Fox: Oh LOOK I see Gruffy’s tail behind that rock. Captain dressed as Gruffy wiggles his/her tail from
behind a rock.
MC: Fox and his friend find Gruffy behind some rocks; they also find some scrolls.
Fox and his Friend (in unison while looking at the audience): Where did these come from?
(suspenseful music)
The boys open the scrolls and which have writing that they cannot read.
Fox: What do all these letters mean? Fox shows the audience the scroll.
Friend: Let’s see if the trader knows what these scrolls are for. They take the scrolls to a trader and
all three look at the scrolls.
Trader: I wonder what it says…let’s take it to a scholar. The trader takes the boys and the scrolls to a
scholar. They carefully look at the scrolls, and ponder their meaning.

Trader (to everyone): I determine that these scrolls are written in Hebrew and they are
very old. Fox, his friend, the trader, and the scholar look at the scrolls amazed and with awe.
MC: Fox, his cousin, and their goat Gruffy discovered the DEAD SEA SCROLLS, the
oldest copies of books of the Bible OLD TESTAMENT ever found! All the characters jump
around with excitement and then the Captains enter the stage to sing Sea Scroll Scholar.

They called it the Dead Sea Scrolls.
When scholars translated it, the
words matched the bible we have now,
EXACTLY. That is proof that the bible
is God’s truth. It has not changed in
thousands of years. This month you are
going to have a chance to learn God’s
truth and become a Sea Scroll Scholar.

This month you get to become Scripture Scholars. You will be able to decode Hebrew symbols
to find the truth in scripture. In scripture, we get to know who God is, how much he loves us
and what his plan is for us. God speaks to us in the bible. You are going to study the truth in
scripture and find out what God has to say to us.
Go K4J!
Read the story of Fox and Gruffy the goat in the Mission Pack. Try to have the kids imagine what it would have been like
to find an ancient cave. Now tell them about their mission, have them put their decoders together and teach them how
to decode the first few words on their scroll. Give them a chance to memorize it by practicing it with a friend. When
everyone is finished, have them say it together. Remind the kids that Apostles will be having a party at the next meeting for everyone to “perform” the scripture that is
on the scroll. Be sure to be ready to show you are a scripture scholar!

A “scholar” is a person who studies and tries to learn all he or she can. This month you are
gong to love learning how to READ a part of the bible and become a scripture scholar. You
will learn a special poem, called a psalm. It teaches that Jesus is like a shepherd and we are
his sheep. What is a shepherd? What do you think a shepherd does to take care of his sheep?
How does Jesus take care of us? When you learn to read scripture, the words in the bible, you
learn about how much God loves us.

Show the kids their Scripture Scroll and help them decode the first box. Now help them memorize the first line, “The
Lord is my Shepherd”. Help them see that they can memorize the whole psalm by the end of the month. Then, the
Apostles are going to help host a “Sea Scroll Scholar” party and they will have a chance to show everyone they are
Scripture Scholars!

Get MovIng Games
CAMEL RACES TO THE “TRUTH!”
This fast paced game keeps everyone involved and encourages kids to use their noggins!
Ready…
You will need:
• K4J Bucks
• Carpeted or mat-covered surface
• Children arranged in teams of three
• Leftover tube of Christmas wrap (or other tube) labeled, “SCRIPTURE SCROLL,” per team
• Course markers and sign that reads: “RACE TO THE TRUTH!”
• Whistle
Go K4J!
Two people in each team get down on all fours, and the
third (the smallest) rests on all fours on top of the backs
of the other two, as the camel’s “hump.” Mark out a
short course that ends at a “watering spot” by a posted
sign that reads, “RACE TO THE TRUTH!” Provide long
“Scripture scrolls” (tubes of leftover Christmas wrap)
sticking out of a tall, narrow box, one per team. Have a
SLOW race to the Scripture scrolls, being careful not to
let the “hump” on top fall off. The person on top grabs a
scroll from the box, and the camel carefully turns around
and walks back to the start. Award K4J Bucks to all who
finish the race!

SCRIPTURE-SCROLL SCHOLAR
Say…
God gave each of us many gifts, and he wants us to use them! When we study Scripture, we are
using the gift of our intelligence to help us learn God’s TRUTH. Let’s play a game that keeps us
on our toes both in mind and body. It’s called “Scripture-Scroll Scholar.” Here’s how to play.

Everyone must stay away from IT and pay attention to the action at all times. The person who is IT chases and tags
someone. The person tagged says, “SCRIPTURE” very quickly and points to another who yells, “SCROLL”,” who points to
another who yells, “SCHOLAR!” The person who is pointed to must say the correct word without hesitation or they are
out and must sit down. If all three say the words correctly, they same person remains IT. If someone makes a mistake, the
person tagged becomes IT. Pass out K4J Bucks to all who remain standing at the end of each round!

WHERE’S YOUR LAMB?”

You will need:
• Small stuffed lamb animal
• Optional: K4J Bucks, 1 per child
Say…
Jesus is our Shepherd and WE are his lambs! Today we are going
to play “Shepherd, Shepherd, Where’s Your Lamb?” This is what
you do.
Go K4J!
Children sit in a circle. One child is given a small stuffed lamb toy. (A lamb could
be made from the toe of a child’s sock, stuffed with newspaper and tied. Cover it
in cotton balls and draw on eyes and a mouth.)
Pick a shepherd from the group. The shepherd leaves the room or hides his eyes
while facing a corner. The remaining children pass the lamb around the circle,
chanting, “Jesus is our Shepherd and we are his sheep!” When the K4J Guide says,
“Stop!” all the children hide their hands behind their backs and say, “Shepherd,
shepherd, where’s your lamb?” It is the shepherd’s job to guess who has his lamb.
The shepherd is allowed three guesses. If he guesses the right person, he takes
their seat and they become the “shepherd.” If he doesn’t guess correctly by the
third try, the person holding the sheep is the new shepherd.
SHEEP MARCH
This simple game helps kids reflect on what it means to lead and follow!
Put on some fun K4J background music. The kids line up and crawl on all
fours in a circle. One child is the SHEPHERD. The shepherd calls out the
actions of the sheep. For instance, the shepherd might call out, “Sheep,
tiptoe in the grass!” and the children mimic the action. Some other
ideas: “Sheep, go fast!” “Sheep, graze!” “Sheep, wiggle your
ears!” “Sheep, hop on one hoof!” etc.

Cool Craft...
Giant Bible Scrolls
Make Giant Bible Scrolls to decorate your parish hall!
Ready…
You will need:
• Long strips of butcher paper
• Pencils, erasers, markers
• Poster paints and brushes
• Copies of the Scripture Scroll pattern that has a different
verse a highlighted for each child or small group
Say…
The “Be a SEA SCROLL SCHOLAR” Mission helps us reflect on
TRUTH. We find God’s TRUTH in holy Scripture. It helps us grow
closer to God.
Today we are going to think about the images in the Sea Scroll
Scholar verse we are working to learn, then draw and paint the illustrations on this gigantic scroll! When people see your work, they
will think about the meaning of this Scripture.
Go K4J!
Tape the ends of each long strip of butcher paper to the table or floor, and with marker
draw lines down each strip, about two feet apart. Assign one or two children to each twofoot segment to illustrate. Pass out copies of the Scripture Scroll pattern. You may wish
to highlight a different verse on each copy ahead of time. This will be each child’s assigned
verse to illustrate. Encourage kids to use their imaginations to represent their verse on
paper. Tape the scrolls to a wall and caption each segment with its corresponding verse.

• A white paper plate (not styrofoam)
• Hole punch, glue, scissors
• Two 12-inch lengths of narrow ribbon
• Polyester cotton balls

The “Be a Sea Scroll Scholar” Mission helps us learn God’s TRUTH in
Scripture. Let’s make special hats today that will help us remember to
learn God’s TRUTH in the Holy Bible. We will be Jesus’ lambs and
follow him wherever he goes!
Go K4J!
Fold a paper plate in half. Punch a hole one inch from the outer edge of the plate near
the fold line, one on each side. Thread each hole with a 12-inch length of narrow ribbon
and tie securely. Cover the hole-punched half of the paper plate with cotton balls. Allow
the glue to dry. Cut across the paper plate near the fold line, leaving two pointed “ears”
sticking up from the fold. Bend the half plate down over the pre-K4Jer’s head, tying the
ribbon in a bow under the chin. The curve in the paper plate should force the ears into
an upright position.
Hand Print Sheep
Display these sheep next to Jesus, the Good Shepherd! (pattern included)
Make a fist and paint the bottom of your hand with white tempera paint. Press
it onto a piece of green construction paper two or three times. These are the
bodies. Paint your thumb and make a thumbprint head on each of your sheep.
When the sheep are dry, draw on faces and legs with fineline marker and glue
cotton balls onto the bodies. Let the kids decorate the rest of the paper. Paste
a copy of the “Jesus, the Good Shepherd” pattern onto each of the papers, or
post the sheep next to a large copy on the wall.

K4J HOLY HERO :
St. Jerome
This month’s K4J Holy Hero is St. Jerome. St. Jerome studied God’s
TRUTH in Scripture. The Holy Spirit helped St. Jerome understand God’s
TRUTH, and teach it to others. St. Jerome had to work his hardest and
use all of his gifts to do this. That’s how the Holy Spirit works through us.
We can share God’s TRUTH from Scripture, too. We can share our Sea
Scroll Scripture passages we have been working to learn this month. Let’s
host a “Sea Scroll Scholar” Show and Pizza Party!
“SEA SCROLL SCHOLAR” Show
& Pizza party
Invite parents & parish staff to a “Sea Scroll Scholar” show & pizza party to help kids complete their
individual “Sea Scroll Scholar” Missions as a group! Use station time to prepare. Or, if you do not wish
to host a party, use one of the following suggestions as a Saints & Scripture activity!
Choose some or all of the following show suggestions, then end with a family pizza party.
Ask families to bring side dishes and paper goods, and charge a small family fee to have pizzas
delivered. Or you may wish to have kids help prepare “Personal Mediterranean Pizzas” as
part of an Apostolic Action activity, and bake them while the show is performed in the parish
cafeteria. However you choose to do it, the ingredients for a super scripture sharing celebration are here!

Mediterranean
Personal Pizzas
Here’s what you need:
pita bread (each pita makes 2
personal pizzas)
spaghetti sauce
mozzarella cheese
feta cheese
any Mediterranean toppings,
such as sauteed zucchini, red
peppers, eggplant, or olives.
Slice each pita around the
edge, separating the top from
the bottom. Place each pita
half, inside up, on a cookie
sheet. Spread with sauce.
Sprinkle with feta cheese and
cooked veggies. Cover with
shredded mozzarella. Bake at
350˚ for 10-12 minutes, or
until the center is hot and the
cheese is melted.
Scripture-sharing Show Stoppers
“Gruffy and the Dead Sea Scrolls” skit: Follow the cartoon text and scenes from the Mission
Pack cartoon story, pages 2-3. If time allows you may wish to divide your groups into scenery makers,
script producers, costume designers, actors, directors, and lighting crew. Allow kids to embellish scenes
with impromptu fun. If you have little prep time, make use of all individuals by adding “extras” to the skit
performance wherever needed such as caravan camels, a “school of scholars,” spare vats in the cave -whatever allows all members to take part in the production. Make the pre-K4J costume hat and decorations
suggested in the Cool Craft section!
K4J Quick Capers: You may wish to incorporate different age levels for these “between scenes” K4J
Quick Capers. Older kids may say the jokes, and Pre-K4Jer “lambs” may crawl around on stage for visual
effect:
What did the Red Sea say to the Dead Sea? Nothing. It just waved.
What do sheep do on a sunny day? Have a baa- baa- cue!
Where do sheep get their hair cut? At the baa- baa- shop!
Why didn’t the sheep cross the road? There were too many baaa- d drivers!
The Lord is My Shepherd "Sea Scroll" song: Dress Pre-K4Jers in "Little Lamb Hats" suggested in
the Cool Craft section. Introduce the Pre-K4J performance in the following way:
This month, Pre-K4Jers have been working hard to learn about Jesus, the Good
Shepherd in Psalm 23. First, we discovered the words of the psalm song and learned
them each day at home through the "Be a Sea Scroll Scholar" Mission. Then we
learned to sing the song as a group, and added hand motions. Now we would like to
perform our special "Sea Scroll Song” for you. Perform The Lord is My Shepherd "Sea Scroll
Song” complete with hand motions. See the Pre-K4J “Sea Scroll Song” pattern in this guidebook for the
song words, tune, and motions.
“Gruffy & Fox” skit: Captains perform the skit from the Opening Assembly to introduce the story.
"Be a Sea Scroll Scholar" Scripture Memory Recital: Gather all K4J kids and Apostles to recite
their scripture memory passage they have been working on at home this month. Group kids on stage by
team, all members still wearing their show costumes. You may wish to have the entire large group recite
together, or assign different verses to different teams for a "round robin" recitation effect. Announcer says:
Our K4J kids & Apostles took on the "Be a Sea Scroll Scholar" Mission this month,
too. They have worked hard to KNOW and LOVE God's truth in the Holy Bible. Now
they would like to SHARE God's truth found in Psalm 139 with you! (See the pattern
included in this guidebook for words to the decoded scripture passage.)

Help Apostles host this party “show” where everyone can display their scholarly skills! Here are ideas for the Apostles
to prepare. Additional ideas for other ages are included in the Saints & Scripture section. Break a leg!
“Tons of Treasure”
Two narrators tell the following story, and other Apostles act it out on stage. Perform it after the Captains
perform the Mission Pack story about Fox and Gruffy. 1:

Gruffy and Fox sure were lucky to find those old leather scrolls in that cave!
But two of the scrolls weren’t leather. They were made of copper.
What did they have written on them?
That was the tricky part. The copper was too brittle to unroll, so they called in the scientists. Scientists had to paint, bake, saw, photograph, and piece together the
pieces of scroll.
And after that they still had to figure out the message?
Yes! The message was written in code. But it was worth all the trouble, because when
the work was done, the scrolls told where to find 10,000 TONS of TREASURE buried in
61 different places in Palestine!
But the leather scrolls were filled with treasure too. They were filled with Holy Scripture
-- God’s TRUTH!
And that’s treasure you can carry in your head -- and in your heart!
“Legend of the 70 Scholars” mime
The trick here is to have all the “scholar” mimes do everything in unison. Play Gregorian chant in the background.
The narrator reads the script from the back of the K4J Mission Pack as follows.
The Legend of the 70 Scholars: (Scholars lined up in a row, standing at attention.) Hundreds of years ago,
70 scholars got together to come up with a version of the Old Testament that was really
good. Each day, the scholars were given one verse to translate. (Each “scholar” mimes taking a slip
of paper with a verse written on it. They may wish to exaggerate reading it, then thinking about it, looking upward
with arms folded, tapping one foot.) Then each went into their own rooms to work. (Each mimes
going into a room, closing the door, and sitting down to work, all in unison.) When night came, all the
scholars came out to compare their translated verses. (All come out and line up. One by one, as
in dominoes, they turn to the next scholar in line. Each has the same marked expression of astonishment as they

Use plastic spoons to excavate archeological cave treasure.
You Will Need,
per child:
• Chocolate or butterscotch packaged pudding snack
• Gummy bear “mummy”
• A few chocolate, peanut butter and/or butterscotch chips
• A teaspoon of graham cracker or vanilla wafer crumbs
• Plastic spoon
Go K4J!
Poke a gummy bear “mummy” and some “broken pottery” chips into a cave of pudding, sift on some cookie
crumb “sand,” then go on an archeological dig!
1. Peel back the concealing entrance of the “cave” and bury an ancient mummy deep inside.
2. Mark the top of the excavation site
with “broken pottery” chips.
3. Sprinkle with “sandy” cookie
crumbs, then start digging!
Grocery Store Option:
FRUITY “SEA SCROLLS”
Pass out fruit roll ups as kids recite the Scripture verse. Pull the scrolls from an “ancient” pottery vat!
