August Stated Meeting
WAYNE WELLS
Greetings Nobles and Ladies. Can
you believe it is already September.
Ceremonial will be here before you know
it. Please be Thinking MEMBERSHIP.
When I left off last month, we were
heading to Hays, Ks. for the Shrine Bowl
on July 24th & 25th. We had a great
time. Thank you to the Units that went
and participated! The Divan & Divan
Ladies had a wonderful hospitality table.
Thank You for all of the food and your
help in making this weekend so successful. As far as the kicking of the field
goal – at least I hit the goal post. It just
wasn’t above the uprights. Hey, better
luck to Noble Bart Ogden next year!
Congratulations and Thank You to
the Midian Touchdowners for their large
donation to the Shriners Hospitals from
their annual golf tournament. They
had one of the BEST golf tournaments
in Kansas.
On August 1st we had our 3rd Annual
Sportsmen’s Event and WOW what an
event that was. Noble Bart Ogden
and the Sportsmen’s Committee did a
fantastic job. Cessna Activity Center
was the perfect place. Thank You to
everyone that sold a ticket or worked
the event. There were a lot of Units
that stepped up to help out. Our Chief
Aides, Executive Aides and Aides were
there to help. We also had a lot of our
Ladies help out. It took a lot of people

to make this a success and YOU DID
IT!! Thank You!!
We had a wonderful attendance of
Shriners on Saturday, August 15th at
the PRCA Rodeo in Eureka. Lady
Terri & I really enjoyed this. We
hadn’t been to a rodeo in a while so
it brought back memories. Noble
Jamie Nelson and his committee
and the Greenwood County Shriners
really put on a class act. Our Shrine
Child, Landon“Bear” Lacy, was recognized and he along with our Shrine
Child, Justin Bowman Jr, received
several special gifts from the Rodeo
Committee. It was a great evening.
Thank You for going to support
Greenwood County and the Shrine. I
was glad they didn’t make me ride a
bull or bucking bronco.
There was a special opportunity
that came to us on August 21st at 81
Speedway. Harli White, a young lady
that had been burned over 45% of her
body in a Sprint Car Racing accident
when she was younger, was racing
at 81 Speedway. She was treated at
the Galveston Shriners Hospital for
her burns. Harli was pulled from her
burning race car by a fellow race car
driver who a couple of years later
met with a tragic death. There was a
foundation set up in the race car drivers name and that foundation donated
$555.00 to the Shriners Hospitals
along with our own Midian Shriners
“passing the fez” for donations which
totaled over $3,700.00. Again, we had
a tremendous attendance in Shriners
for this occasion. Thank You all for
participating in this event. The 81
Speedway crew did a great job of
announcing our philanthropy all night
long and thanking the Shriners for
being in attendance. This was another
great evening.
Saturday, August 22nd was the PreCSSA Party– “Take the High Road to
CSSA 2015”. The party was a little
light in attendance, but we all had a
great time. The kitchen and bar got
a workout. That’s a good thing. Our
D J, Noble Jim Bob Montgomery,
played great music for us to listen and
dance to. Thank You to Noble Ray
Richecky & Lady Diana along with
all of our Executive Aides that were
in charge. Aides Teams 1 & 2 – Thank
you for your assistance in setting up
and cleaning up.
We are getting ready to go to CSSA
is in beautiful Golden, Colorado which
will be held from August 27th-30th.
We should have lots of trophies to
report about in our next article.

Summer has sure flown by fast...
We had another successful pancake
feed at the Greenwood County Fair
and served over 200 hungry fair goers
breakfast. Then it was off to practice
our routine for CSSA. We have been
diligently practicing on the weekends getting
our routine polished for CSSA in Denver.
Special thanks go out to Noble Lonnie
Nichols PP and Lady Melinda along with
all the Shrine Ladies for the breakfasts after
our early morning sessions and the wonderful
lunch after our final practice and polish on the
Saturday before we departed for Denver. The
hospitality and fellowship in getting ready
for CSSA is awesome, not to mention the
Nichols’ pool to wrap up a practice session
in the summer heat!
Speaking of CSSA, by the time you read
this, it will be in the record books. Let’s hope
we continue our success from Tulsa and bring
home some new hardware for our trophy
case. I wonder who will be the esteemed
recipient of the “Driving Miss Daisy” award
this year?
Another of our capstone events of the
summer was the PRCA Rodeo in Eureka.
The PRCA Committee, of whom many are
Greenwood County Shriners, did a super job
of putting together a top notch rodeo. Our
CARL “C.F.” COX
Reporter
Shrine Club did the beer garden again this year and we sold a
record amount of beer over the two day
event. The weather was perfect and the
crowds were out in force to enjoy the
rodeo. The Saturday afternoon parade
was well attended and we had 17 3-Wheelers
in the parade. We broke in some of our Divan
members to the finer art of 3-Wheeling along
with a couple of Cartoons that didn’t have
a ride. Have you ever seen Olaf and Wile
E Coyote on a 3-Wheeler? Check out this
month’s picture… you never know what
might be found in a parade in Eureka! This
was capped off with the evening performance
honoring Shriners International Hospitals by
highlighting some of our Shrine kids during
the rodeo along with our Divan and Nobility.
The fundraising event of the evening went to
the Shriners Hospitals. What a great evening
it was to showcase the Shriners!
Finally, I will finish it off with great news.
Miss Lynnie is finally home! The Teters
have had quite a summer with several ups
and downs, but now that Lynnie is home we
all have our fingers crossed that she is home
to stay. It will be great when she is strong
enough to start attending our meetings and
functions again!
Our August meeting provided
the expected good food and good
times at the Latham Saloon. Thank you
Noble Don Nelson. Our Divan Liaison,
Captain of the Guard Steve Julian,
accompanied by Lady Sissy, gave us
a full run down about the things going on
at Midian. Lady Phyllis Brewer gave us
first-hand information about the upcoming
Fez-tival of trees and advised us she had been
able to lay claim to one of the trees and asked
if BCSC would like to enter the contest. The
Sumner County
BULLETIN, Not only are we
having 2 hogs cooked for the Hog
Roast but we are having a wedding
as well. Noble Winston Smith and
Melissa Carlson will be married at
4pm on October 17. It will be a first at
the farm.
I hope everyone realizes that the date is
October 17 instead of October 3 as printed
on the dues cards. Seems the golf outing and
stag was scheduled for the October 3 date.
We will eat at about 5:30 and a D. J. will be
playing so we can dance the night away. The
evening will be open to one and all. The meal

Enjoyed participating in the 4th of
July parade/celebration in Hardtner,
Kansas. Looking forward to the rest of the
summer and fall. While it’s been a long time
since we have reported, we’ve been busy.
We were proud to participate in the recent

Although the Club itself held
no meetings in June, July and
August the Hobo Unit was busy,

event August 8th. Unit President Noble Don
Dody says September will likewise be busy,
with the Florence Labor Day outing 11:00

10:00 Saturday the 19th, and the Marion Old
Settlers’ parade 10:00 AM September 26th.
Noble Eric Puttroff and other members
of the “upgrade the Toter committee” says
the project is progressing nicely, with the
long-unused brakes on the Caboose being
made functional again, and a new controller
soon to be installed.
That handles the “whoa” chores; in the

install a rebuilt and possibly
more-powerful engine and companion transmission to get many
more seasons of use from the otherwise solid

Lady Ruth reports hubby Noble Bill

recent surgery complications. Noble Rex

and Club Past President Noble Guy Wright
is back on a normal schedule after flare-up
of a heart condition.
As this is written before the fact, we can
only assume the Club’s Annual Picnic August
30th was a success, and thank those who
made it so. Our monthly meetings resume
September 21st at Newell’s Truck Stop…
come smile with us, the fun-iest Club in
Midian.
I guess we are rolling through
another month again – wow – how
amazing this year has been so far ---- So here we go again --- The Dodge
City Shrine Club held their August 2015
meeting on the 12th at Central Station
Bar and Grill. Yes, it as a super turnout for
the month of August 2015. Seems the folks
do enjoy the food a Central Station and the
owners are always very nice to the Shrine
group.
Well to be honest – the Shrine group had
a very busy JULY. There was a “Super”
showing at the Dodge City Days Parade.
The Nobels and wifes showed up with the
Big Fire truck, the King Midget, The Orange
Volkswagen, and the other Fire truck. We
had Noble brothers who worked the Dodge
City Kiddie Parade and Fellow Brothers who
were working at the Car Show which was
held in Wright Park, there in Dodge. The
Nobles totally went all out for Dodge City
days with having all the Fire Trucks, the King
Midget and the Orange Volkswagen for all of
the public to view and see. There was also a
Kid Fest and Nobles took pictures with the
kids while in clown costumes, and Brother

Hello once again ladies and gents.
Welcome to another thrilling adventure!
This month we find our heroes battling the
nefarious Heat Wave, and his side kick
Dr. Humidity! Will our dashing, valiant
knights clad in the armor of fur, felt and
foam be courageous enough to thwart Heat
Wave’s evil master plan, and bring joy to the
sweet and innocent children of Toonville? Will
there be a noticeable shortage of bottled water
and Gatorade at your local convenience store
when this great act of bravery is complete? Will
SpongeBob ever get his groove back? Who
knows?! Stay tuned!!!
The past month has had some pretty cool
events take place. We had a huge turnout for
help running the beer trailer at the 3rd annual
Sportsmen’s Event. Thank you to everyone who
came out. It’s always better to have more help
than we need than not nearly enough. Things
ran very smoothly, and we all had a great time.
We even had 3 winning tickets sold from our
unit! Not too shabby. Very special thanks to our
wonderful Ladies, who are always ready to jump
in and help out in everything we do.
At the Mulvane parade we invaded the
Hospital float. It’s always fun when we get to
share our unique talents with other units. Each
time we do this, we hear feedback regarding a
noticeable spike in enthusiasm among the parade
attendees. It also gave us a little more opportunity to draw that extra attention to the whole
purpose of our endeavors, the Shriners Hospitals
for Children. Not to mention the patient riding
on the float had quite the exciting ride.
Antique Autos
Greetings to all Antique Autos
members and their ladies. My apologies for not getting an article written for
August. I had promised to do that. This
summer has been a busy Shrine one, and
lots of good events and activities to go yet
for the year.
The bus trip to St Louis was awesome to
see the new Shrine Hospital. The June float
trip was an excellent adventure for those who
went. The sportsman event was a huge success
recently. For those Antique Autos people that
helped...thankyou.

That same day we had some
members at the Eureka parade, also
teaming up with another unit. If you happened to catch a couple characters riding
with the Greenwood Co. 3 Wheelers, you
witnessed a true act of bravery! I don’t think
I could pull that off. Later that night we had the
chance to get together at the Eureka Pro Rodeo!
What a great time that was. This year the event
was to benefit the Shriners Hospitals! They even
pulled out a horse drawn trailer hauling our

patient, and a couple of our toons were up there
as well. How cool is that?! It was a great night.
Glad to see a bunch of us made it up there to
support it. Plus, one of our toon kids, CJ, sang
the Star Spangled Banner.
As we look forward into this month, we’ve
got an event coming up that we have been a part
of for the fast few years. On September 19th, the
Leukemia Lymphoma Society is having their
Light The Night walk. It’s a great cause, and tons
of fun. It’s also an evening event, so it should
hopefully be a little cooler on the temps. If you
can make it, let us know. It will be in costume.
If you’re interested in joining one of the most
active units at Midian, and a crowd favorite at
parades, or if you’re already a member and
haven’t been in awhile, we’d love to see you.
Our meetings are the 2nd Thursday of every
month in the Isis room at 6:30 pm. You can also
send us a message on our Facebook page, or
email us at [email protected]. Until
next time, same Toon time, same Toon channel,

Sometimes the combination of a
new client, a new venue, and a slightly
different talent line-up can make for
some on-stage jitters, but those worries
proved groundless when we cranked
up for our maiden appearance August 1st at the
Kansas-Grown Farmers Market in west Wichita.
The weather was warm, but so was the welcome
and we soon had the crowd swinging. Thanks
to Market Musical Director Dave Naramore
(himself a trombonist) and Market Manager
Gunter Hanson for hiring us…and to tuba

Thanks also to guest clarinet man Charles

was a lot of work...musically it was a lot of fun!
My personal thanks to Veteran drummer Noble

clarinet, tenor and baritone sax, banjo, guitar,
trombone, trumpet and even the tuba we found

Keystone Kops
Your favorite unit, the Midian
Keystone Kops are freshly back from
Colorado and the 2015 presentation of
CSSA. We took Golden by storm and
laughed it up for four days. There was
the customary meetings, competitions,
banquets galore, and grand parade to top it off
in the high life of the Rocky Mountains. It is
always refreshing to take a trip out there once
in awhile and take it all in. The mountains
are awesome to us folks here in pretty much
flat Kansas. But you know what they can’t
grow wheat like we can here and feed people
around the world. They can’t grow much of
anything except in a greenhouse. We are all
lucky we live in a great state like Kansas. I
hope to write more about CSSA next month.
I have a few highlights of life in the Kops
since I wrote last. I never got my Topics so I
don’t even know what I wrote about. This is
the busy season for parading as the summer
winds down. We paraded out in Hays for the
Shrine Bowl, then to Howard, on to Harper
for an evening parade, then the big parade
at Mulvane before going to CSSA and the

CSSA parade in Idaho Springs,
CO. There was fantastic hospitality before and after every one of these

gave their time so that we could really
enjoy parading.
I good story came from Hays that I was an
eyewitness to. I watched as Isaac “Cupcake”
McCann, a known Kop convict and gopher,
paraded with us Koppers out there. He
looked good in his prisoner outfit and filled
the part. Then when it came to it, Cupcake,
just wouldn’t go down. It was decided later
with four Gold Whistles present, that had
Cupcake, who has been a gopher for three
years, went down he would have been
relieved of hie gopher duties finally and could
have moved on. But no it didn’t happen.
Cupcake was so close. Well in conclusion,
sorry about your luck Cupcake!
I Wonder?? Will Cupcake be a lifetime

The August camp out was a little
slim on Nomads due to the Mulvane
parade and the Eureka Rodeo but those
in attendance had a wonderful time. As
much as we miss seeing all our Midian
family at the lake, the important thing is to
be out supporting Midian at as many events
as you are able to. The weather was certainly
very cooperative. For those not present, a
true moment in history was made. Noble
Bill Bailey was rendered speechless over
an interesting auction item. This so called
item will more than likely make an appearance somewhere else in the Midian family
and I hope you enjoy it as much as we did.
Lady Sally Balderson is recovering well but
please continue to keep her and Noble Dave

Ambassadors
WOW, is it hot in Midian.
Increased dues and activities galore.
We Ambassadors enjoyed another
night out at the Candle Club on August
21st. Our hosts this month were Noble
Larry Bell and Lady Doris. This night
everyone reserved their consumption of beer
to Coors in honor of our hosts. With musical
selections from Pete Fountain serving as the
background entertainment. What a wonderful
night it was. The principal topic of conversation was the dues increase and our unit has
agreed to “suck-up” and accept the necessary
expenditure. With Imperial passing their
increase down to us we agree there is little
choice in the matter.
Summer ends and it’s back to school. Not
for many of our group, ... but Noble John
McDonald has reported to school, teaching
“study hall” once again. We’re not real sure
what sort of curriculum this entails but discipline certainly is the order of the day. Noble
Ray Barber finally broke down and acquired
a rider mower. Before long he’ll succumb to

How can it not be fun when you are in

summer. Here’s to next year!
If you signed up to bring in snacks for the

The Chefs August monthly

by Executive Chef Yohn. Illustrious
Sir WW was there at 7:00 along with
the rest of the Chefs but we were
missing our liaison, Chef and Marshal
Tom Propps (aka Hopsing). He finally
arrived at 7:06.
Potentate Wells thanked the Chefs
profusely for our help in cooking and serving for the Sportsman’s Raffle. He felt that
everything had gone very well. Illustrious
Sir covered with us, that a 17 year old Shrine
burn Child would be back in her car and
racing at 81 Speedway in the near future. A
passing of the helmets by other drivers will
collect donations for the Shiners’ Hospitals.
He also announced plans for a Midian Stag
on Oct 3, which will be catered by others so
the Chefs can attend and not have to work.
Next treasurer Fuller gave the treasurers
report. We will again be in good shape once
we receive the proceeds for a bill that has
been turned into the Shrine.
Next in order was the Liaison report
which consisted of a repeat of the Illustrious
Sir’s thanks for the Sportsman’s Raffle.
There seemed to be no other news of
importance to the Chefs.

Raffle. He sends a special thanks to Richard
Wentworth for arranging and bringing
another large Grill to help us keep up with
the crowd. Also he wants to thank Kirk
Siegrist for bringing his personal Grill and
handling the Hot Dogs.
Personal observations by this reporter on
the Sportsman’s Raffle: I counted 18 Chefs
actually working on one thing or another
during the day. There were a couple of
others there who passed through. (WW’s
timing was off as he missed the photo Op.)
Mike Bennett did a fine job of keeping
pitchers of Beer for those working in the
heat. Duane Allender showed up for the
day and added Moral support. Glad to see
you out Duane. Richard Mitchell fixed
some outstanding “Poor Boys” for the Chefs
lunch.
