vol. 68 issue 9 Potentate’s Message MTopics IDIAN September, 2013 CSSA 2013 Wichita, Kansas CSSA 2013 LONNIE NICHOLS It is time once again to write this article for the Topics. It seems like only yesterday that Jody was telling me to get last month’s article to her. I think that must mean we have all been really busy. Midian held its first Sportsman Raffle this last weekend. For those of you that attended and helped THANK YOU. We couldn’t have held the event without a lot of help from everyone. I think everyone will agree it was a huge success not only for Midian but also for all the units and clubs that sold the tickets. CSSA is history and I know everyone had a great time. I was so proud of all the units that competed. It’s nice to win an award but the best thing about CSSA is the friendships that are made. It was a great honor to receive the Potentate’s Traveling Trophy at the Motor Corp. Banquet. That award is given to the Potentate whose Shrine Center post the highest total points during Motor Corp. competition. The Post CSSA party is Sept. 7th so come and support all the units as they present their awards. Midian’s Krazy Klowns and Kandyland Klowns are having a steak feed that evening so come early and enjoy a great steak. Midian’s Fall Ceremonial will be here before we know it. We all need to be looking for good men that would make GREAT SHRINE MASONS. We are having a Masonic Information meeting September 4th at the Shrine Center. Bring a friend and show him what we are all about. Membership is the most important job we should all have. It is the lifeblood of our organization. Yours in the Faith Lonnie Nichols Potentate 2013 Illustrious Sir Lonnie receiving Potentate’s Traveling Trophy at the CSSA Motor Corps Banquet. Midian received highest scores in their competition. To say it’s been a busy summer would be an understatement! I’ll try to do better, in fear of getting FIRED from this job! (Insert laughter here…). As I am writing this, the 3-Wheelers have been diligently practicing our routine for CSSA in Branson; and, by the time you read it, it will have come and gone. Everyone has been practicing going in circles and so far nobody has traded paint! Let’s hope that trend continues. At this time we have 15 bikes competing which hasn’t happened in many years. I hear there is strength in numbers, so maybe this will be the magic bullet for us to bring home a first place trophy! Once again the 3-Wheelers served pancakes at the County Fair provided by Chris Cakes Pancakes. This is always a fun event at the fair and it’s the only time you have to catch your breakfast before you can eat it! We had our last steak cookout for the summer and even though the crowd was a little light, everyone had a great evening of Page 3 CARL “C.F.” COX Reporter fun and fellowship. We had a bonus of enjoying music provided by Noble David Pate’s grandson, Hunter Winters who we sponsored to Shrine Band Camp this summer. Hunter is a Sophomore at Wichita Southeast High School. Speaking of a busy summer, the 3-Wheelers also provided the beer garden again at the PRCA Rodeo. Of course this fell right in line with our last weekend to practice and polish for CSSA, so by the end of the weekend, I think everyone was ready for a break for a few days before heading off to CSSA. Noble Leroy Moreland had quite a scare with a medical issue that has laid him up this summer. I hear he even got a helicopter ride to Wichita over the deal. The good news is, he is recovering nicely and is planning to be back in the saddle by the time we go to Branson. The scar on his head and his new crew-cut hairdo will make for quite a conversation piece. DECEASED 07-29-2013 Hospital Van Drivers August 2013 Clayton & Marion Scott ~ Lee Humbolt & Ken Dainty John Parker & Toni Ghigliotti ~ Harvey & Carol Owens Farold Hoover & Walter McIver ~ Jerry & Shirley Smith Lynn & Ina Sage ~ Jerry & Johnsie Buller Thank you to these men and women for their dedicated service to Midian and the St Louis Hospital for Children. They, as all concerned persons of the Shrine, volunteer for the sake of the children. Thank you for your support. Ed Miller, Van Unit Commander 2013 Harper County Thanks to all of the Midian Shrine Units and Clubs who were able to travel to The Harper County Fair and Parade in August. The Midian Shrine sure seemed to be one of the highlights of our Parade. The hospitality was well attended with Nobles and their Ladies. Members of the Harper Masonic Lodge and the Buckin T’s provided and our famous funnel cakes at the Demolition Derby during the Harper County Fair. The T’s are planning our 2nd Annual Poker Run for Saturday, September 7. Watch in the Topics or for flyers or contact Nobles Allen Thomas or Sam Denton for further information. Back at the County Fair, and as always GARY UMMEL Reporter there are a few questionable but notable Nobles in attendance. This year was certainly no exception. Nobles Gary Gelvin Jr. and Brian Byrd were on hand to perform at one of the many parties. Their antics are easily comparable to Skipper and Gilligan, the hard part is figuring out which one is which. However, just like the show, a three hour tour with those two would take forever to complete. Hey here’s an idea! maybe Past Potentate Terry Schrant could be the Professor and could reunite with the castaways, and I’m sure Noble “WW” Wayne Wells would be perfect as Ginger. Bonus Topics: Two hearts are better than one. Butler County The meal served at the August meeting at the Beaumont Hotel seemed to be enjoyed by many of our club members. Noble Gene Fulmer suggested in fun that I provide the transportation for his upcoming trip. Wouldn’t that be a hoot if we could make that work out. And then there was a little bit of ribbing from Noble “Woody” Brixey that added to the fun for this reporter. He and I may have to work out some details on a boyfriend, girlfriend thing we have going. But in the meantime, we will just keep having fun. After the meeting, our divan liaison Chaplin Kent Butz, and Lady Linda were seen wandering around the historic water tower and reading all the information signs. This must have been their first visit to the historic Beaumont. President Chris Nelson gave them directions on how to get down to the ponds, where there may be an infamous “hanging” tree. I sure hope they didn’t get lost and we see them again. In the not so good news column, Noble ARV KRUMMINS Reporter John Kenny and Lady Leona’s daughter at the time of this writing had been moved to Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice care. Noble Richard Hanshaw let us know that his dad, Noble Keith Hanshaw, was at St. Joseph hospital. I know Noble Keith is proud to be a Mason and a Shriner and has a life membership in each organization. We might keep these folks in our thoughts and prayers. As for the future, Noble Jim Reeves suggested that we don’t get behind the curve about getting plans made for Christmas. And by golly, it is September already. But this must be a party group because there seemed to be a flurry of good rumbling going on among the ladies about getting things lined up for Christmas. I wonder what jolly tidings will develop. The September meeting is planned for the 11 th at the Cinnamon Bakery & Caffe in Augusta at 6 pm. See you all there. Page 4 Harvey County Club & Hobo Unit Note the Marion parade will be September the 28th, not the 29th as shown on the Hobo schedule Happy 90th birthday to Charter Member Noble Tom Petersen, who celebrated with quite a party, live music and all. Who knew Nobles “Fuzzy” Toevs and Arnold Nye were such good dancers…and with each other? For most of the thirty-some years that I’ve been writing this column, I’ve tried to focus on the “fun” side of our Club and Unit, as above, highlighting those positive events and the Nobles participating in them that hopefully left the reader chuckling, but this month Club President Noble Lenny Wild and Hobo President Noble Don Dody requested that I bring some upcoming matters to your attention. Since its founding in 1968 this Club and Unit has been and continues to be unique in many ways. Numerous awards testify to our past and continued support of Midian’s Plane of Mercy fund and other charitable programs. Our solid belief in and support of those programs make us “Proud to be a Shriner.” But we and many other similar organiza- Dodge City Shrine Club A new world will be won not by those who stand at a distance with their arms folded, but by those who are in the arena, whose garments are torn by storms and whose bodies are maimed in the course of the contest.” ~ Nelson Mandela from a letter to Winnie Mandela, written on Robben Island, 23 June 1969 Until one is committed, there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back. Concerning all acts of initiative (and creation), there is one elementary truth, the ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans: that the moment one definitely commits oneself, then Providence moves too. All sorts of things occur to help one that would never otherwise have occurred. A whole stream of events issues from the decision, raising in one’s favor all manner of unforeseen incidents and meetings and material assistance, which no man could have dreamed would have come his way. Whatever you can do, or dream you can do, begin it. Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it. Begin it now.” The Dodge City Shrine Club held their August monthly meeting on the 14th August at the Central Station Club and Grill at 207 E. Wyatt Earp Blvd. For August, this was a good turnout, which was surprising with people on vacation – and – getting ready for going back to school – and the farmers getting ready for another season – it was a truly good group who came out. The food was great – and the comradeship of fellow Brothers is always a joy to have. With a saddened heart, I have to write that Lady V. Sanders, late wife to Brother Bob Sanders passed away on 1st August 2013. Brother Bob and Vonda Sanders were members Midian Shrine Topics JOHN HECKMAN Reporter tions are rapidly approaching a crossroad…the path of a shrinking group facing ever-increasing expenses. Club membership is less than half of what it was just five years ago. Meal quality at our monthly meetings has declined as prices rise, there is seldom a program, and the atmosphere is mediocre at best. Do we meet less often... find a cheaper site? Attendance at our annual free picnic continues to dwindle while costs increase. Should we drop the event, or perhaps institute a cover charge? “Hobos” and the Conductor rarely perform on the Caboose roof anymore, so younger parade watchers wonder at the message of that “big red box” gliding by. The truck that pulls that “Box” is showing its age, and a fund drive is underway to purchase a replacement. Is that necessary if we attend fewer parades? Should we drop parades altogether? Plan to discuss these and other issues at our September 16th meeting…all is not doom and gloom. Come smile with us, the fun-iest Club in Midian. “Doc” McCosh Reporter for many years with the Midian and were very instrumental in the core of the Dodge City group. Lady Vonda will be sorely missed by the Dodge group. The Shrine Circus for 2014 will be held February 7th, 8th, and 9th. So please put this on your calendar for 2014 and it will be held at the Dodge City Civic Center at 2100 Central Ave. July was a great month with the Dodge City days – and the Kiddie parade – Fun was had by all – We are looking forward to 2014 when we once again will sponsor the “ Kiddie Parade “ for the Dodge City Days. Please put Reiford and Judy Acord you’re your daily prayers. Brother Reiford who is our Liaison from the Wichita Midian is going to have some more surgery I am told and we all wish him the quickest recovery. Blessings to the two of you always. The two of them are truly missed at the monthly meetings. The DC Shrine Club will hold their September meeting at the Casey’s Cowtown Club – 503 E. Trail St., Dodge City, KS. on 11th September (Wednesday) at 6:30 pm for social hour and dinner served at 7:00 pm. You have to realize that as we grow older, we usually become more relaxed in many ways. You learn how to deal with crisis’s that come up in your life. You truly learn how to be like a Juggler in the Circus. I do suppose that it is all just a “ Big Circus “ and anybody can learn how to manage this in their life. So, just take it one step at a time, one day at a time. “May All Your Days Be Circus Days” Have a truly blessed and wonderful month. Good night America wherever you are. SEPTEMBER, 2013 Sumner County As you and I know, there have not been any printing on the last two issues of the Topics, because I have not had any info to publish. There has not been a Sumner Co. function to report on and I have been busy trying to buy a new home in Derby, plus getting the farm house ready to sell, there is also been the case of where the wife has had serious high blood sugars and wanted to hang out at the hospital. This country boy and his lady are getting older and going to be city kids so we can do less work. Older news is that the Belle Plaine Lodge, has had some needed concrete work done by lodge members and members of the Shrine that do not belong to the Belle Plaine lodge, Del Wharton Reporter they volunteered their time and knowledge. All work was and is appreciated. Brotherhood is a valuable asset, whether it is a local or from neighbors. Thank you brothers. Upcoming events where we can concentrate on some fun are; the traditional and annual October 19, Hog Roast at Gene Alexander’s farm at Belle Plaine. This has been and will be a great time, there is to be a band, great food, dancing, stories and large smiles to share, Thanks to Gene and Melinda Alexander’s, efforts plus many volunteers this will be one another good Sumner Co. Shrine Club event. Plus remember Nov. 8 Pre-Glow Rib Feed, at the Temple. Yoshi TORRIN REED Reporter September is here and looks to be a busy month, much like the last few. The Sam Adams tasting sounds like a great time, so does the Poker Run. August certainly was a busy month. How’d the Sportsmen‘s raffle go? Did you win? CSSA was last month; did your group bring in more trophies? Was a good time had by all? Yoshi sold quite a few of the Sportsmen’s raffle tickets. Thanks goes out to all of those that helped sell them. Special thanks to Noble Patrick Kennedy for his extra efforts and providing an area to sell them and to those that helped man the booth. Coming up we have the football raffle tickets. This was a great hit last year and is a fun and easy way to help the Shrine out as well as individual units. Labor Day is this month and marks the end of summer. It became an official holiday in 1894 and is one of our oldest holidays. Labor Day marks the beginning of the NFL and College football seasons. It used to be the last day to wear white for all of you fashion conscious Shriners out there. Because Labor Day is such a large retail weekend, many U.S. workers do not get the three day weekend that most of us do. Maybe that’s why it called Labor Day?? More parades are coming up as September is a great month for them. Before you know it winter will be here and the last parade. Let’s see some more wheels out there! Our next meeting is September 9th since the first Monday of the month is Labor Day. Hope to see you all. Million Dollar Band The final figures from our Benefit Concert in July remain to be determined. Some promised revenues have not been received. Results will be published later. I can’t report on activities at the Central States Shrine Band Association session in Branson because it starts one week after deadline for this article. Noble Duane Draving is scheduled to become the President of CSSBA for 2014, which will have him in charge of the CSSBA meeting in Tulsa next year. The Tulsa Shrine does not have a band making us about the closest. As is true of all Shrine groups, the Million Dollar Band is always looking to add members, men who play brass, woodwind or percussion instruments. If that describes someone you know, tell them that Midian has RICK MILHON Reporter a concert band, a polka band, a dance band a la the Swing Era, and a Dixieland band. (I’ll let the Oriental Band and the Hill Billy Band tell their own tales.) The interested man can drop in at one of our rehearsals. On Monday nights (except for those holidays when Midian is closed) the DanceKatz rehearse at 7:00. The Concert Band follows at 8:30. On the first and third Tuesdays of the month, the Polkatz rehearse at 7:30pm. On the second and fourth Thursdays of the month, the DixieKatz rehearse at 7:00pm. Did you know that John Philip Sousa’s favorite encore was “The Roosters Lay Eggs in Kansas”? The piece is in our Concert Band folders as is music from “The Simpsons.” TRANSMISSION INC. You wannabe Bobby Flays, all you look alike Paula Deens and the multitudes of backyard grill masters. The Oriental Band-Aids are looking for some tried and true recipes for their cookbook coming to Midian. Of course you will get full credit in print unless you stole the masterpiece from someone else. Please e-mail these gems of culinary experience to: [email protected] before November 20th. As I write this a week away from CSSA wonder if the Keystone Kops were ready at CSSA to try to take the beer rolling championship away from the OB? Our team Of Nobles Jerry Craft and “Chugger” Bill Johnston, as of last night said they were more than ready. I wonder if the Koppers have anyone who can compete in this type of contest? I wonder………. A big thank you again to the Harper Volunteer Fire Department for hosting us before the Harper parade as they have done for several years! The food and fellowship is top drawer. They also show up at our steak feeds Midian Shrine Topics “OUT OF TOWN” Reporter with plenty of stuffed poppers to share with the crowd. Mark your calendar now for September 29th for the Fall Steak Feed at Clonmell. The first picture this month is of a little fellow who would make a good mascot for the OB, especially on hump day. The other picture is from a previous steak feed just to get your mouth watering for one of those 2 pound sirloins! Page 5 Nascarts O W W W W H AT TA b u s y month. Parades, Shrine Bowl, gun raffle, football cards, CSSA, kart building, Nascar races, rain…. I’m gonna start using the waterways to travel. Instead of jumping in the car to drive somewhere in the traffic, I’m gonna stay in my house and boat down the rivers. They call that there a houseboat. Aunt Flo put pontoons on her car and calls it amphibious. Now there is no engine in this car, but I did see it going down Meridian street awhile back so I’m thinkin she is on to some green energy here. She is still lookin for her first million, but then again, she is still lookin for a partial. She lost it eatin corn on “RICK-N-BOBBY” Reporter the cob. Hasn’t seen it since. Till next time, may your mullets never fail and may your buckets always bail. I’m Rick N Bobby and I’m out. Nomads Calling all Shriners! Do you own an R.V. or tent? Do you like to camp? Do you like to go to the lake for an afternoon? Do you enjoy fellowship with your Shrine brothers and families? If you answered yes to one of these questions you should visit the Midian Nomads. Our next camp out is September 13 and 14 at Lake Afton Shelter #1. At the August camp out there were 18 Midian Nomad Ambassadors H i s t o r y, h o w w e l o v e i t . Ambassador Gene (not Billy) West discovered a written record of just how the Ambassadors of Midian came into being, as told by Ambassador Les Eddy, deceased. Who were the originators, where were they formed, how did they parade, and how they enjoyed hospitality? The originators are all gone now, but their legacy lingers on. Our Unit was first known as the PAPAS. The old Model A with the coal fed brooder stove with chimney and drain pipe. This rough and tumble rig was the envy of others with its wash tub and giant cooking pot on board. There were frying pans that adorned the outside. The venerable Ford’s engine got a kerosene douche and was ready to go with the banner. “California or Bust” on the outside that recalled the dust bowl era. This Hoover Special, as it was known, was the star of its day until one unnamed Potentate found us such an embarrassment that he disbanded the unit. We were forced to go “in the dark” until his year was over. Then we came back with the new Potentate approving our folly, but only with the name change of Ambassadors of Midian. Very politically expedient. Stay tune for more on this continuing saga next month. August saw the unit gather at Crestview hosted by Maureen Youngmeyer, Ambassador Earl would approve, I’m sure. Congratulations go to Ambassador Glenn Holmes and Lady Carol who are celebrating their 62nd wedding TURTLE-AT-LARGE Reporter camping families that enjoyed a beautiful weekend. Please keep Noble Robert Beckner who had recent carpel tunnel surgery and Noble Carl Maas who is recovering from a back injury in your prayers. If you would like additional information regarding the Midian Nomads please call Wagon Master Noble Roscoe Taylor at 841-4569. Join us! See you at the lake! JOHN STEWART Mild Mannered Reporter anniversary. Ambassador Kenny Loffland and Lady Billie are back from their adventure to Michigan’s upper peninsula and Canada. Ambassador Gene Lygrisse, P.P. and Lady Betty are home having toured the Eisenhower Library in Abilene and eating at the Brookville Hotel. Ambassador Andy Roberts and Lady Cappy, Ambassador John Stewart and Lady Shirley represented us well at C.S.S.A. in Branson, Mo. Our prayers extend out for Lady Pat Bell, Ambassador Bill Bell’s wife, who has had a stay in the ICU unit at the hospital. This mild mannered reporter is always looking for news for the column. In June, we had our Midian Shrine Golf tournament, and as usual it was a success. We want to thank all who attended. A special thanks goes out to Noble Lou Robelli for his superb job as usual in managing the golf tournament, and of course our sincere appreciation to Noble Dan Barone our President for overseeing the entire process. The Golf Tournament raised over $14,620 for our contribution to the Shrine Hospitals. Thanks Dan and Lou! and as usual Midian Shrine led the way! On the 22 of July, the Touchdowners met in Salina and served hamburgers to all of the West Squad. On July 27th we all congregated in Topeka for the 40th Shrine Bowl and in this humble reporter’s opinion it was by far Hospital Van Unit The Hospital Van Unit would like to thank Sean and Jeremy at E GraF-X for their complimentary work updating the decals on our newest van. We really appreciate your caring contribution! E GraF-X is located at 220 S. Washington St. in Wichita. Thanks also to Noble Myron Frick for coordinating the work. Thankfully, Lady Sharon is now home from the hospital and doing well following her knee surgery. Commander Ed Miller and Lady Sharon said they would like to thank everyone for their flowers, cards and prayers. Our drivers made eight trips to transport twelve patients in August. Thank you to those driver teams who took time out of their schedules to drive on those trips. Notice to all Hospital Van Drivers: meeting notices and other unit communica- one of the very best ballgames. The East Squad won the ballgame, and our sincere congratulations go out to each and every one who participated in both Squads. The Arab Shrine should be congratulated for organizing and executing such an outstanding 40th anniversary. It is the opinion of this humble reporter that the Shrine Bowl should again appear in Wichita. We Midian Shriners are the largest Shrine organization in Kansas, and in every event regardless we always set the example. We have the talent and the can do attitude to make something like this a reality. So Midian, let’s set our goal toward the future and make this happen. Again, Thanks Midian Nobles for all of your support!!! It’s very much appreciated! DONALD E. BUSH Reporter tions will no longer be sent to members via the U. S. mail. Instead meeting notices and all other communications will now only be sent via email to those members who have an email account. Considering the high cost of mailing the notices each month, this step has been taken to reduce unnecessary costs and save money for the unit. Anyone who does not communicate via email will still receive meeting notices through the post office. Drivers, please remember with pride that with each trip you make, you are playing a big part in helping to complete the mission of our organization. You are also making a big difference in a patient’s life and the life of that patient’s family. Drive safely and may God bless you. Motor Patrol When you read this, we will be back from CSSA. Captain Lynn Ungles led the August meeting at Quincy’s. It was well attended. It was good to see PP John Auch, Ron Capps, Ron Stowell, Mike Johnson, Lynn Ungles, Jim McNerney, Cy Lampe, Bruce Detweiller, Dave Johnson, Bob Ragsdale, Jerod Cox, me, and Divan Liaison Wayne Wells at the meeting. Motor Patrol at Shrine Bowl included Nobles Rocky McWilliams, PP John Auch, Teri Williams, Jeff Breault, Mickey West, Cy Lampe, Bob Ragsdale and Trustee Captain Lynn Ungles. Others reported on the suspicious backpack and the change in parade routes at the parade. MP left Topeka about Noon and got to Wichita at 8:30. They surveyed the establishments on the way home and report that the bar in Madison is still closed. MP Caldwell parade pictures are on Facebook. The Captain Lynn Ungles led the Motor Patrol to Caldwell. Jerod Cox, Terry Williams, Rocky McWilliams, Derick Metzger, Cy Lampe, Doc Galbreath, and Noble Bob Ragsdale. The Captain rode with his top down and got rained on, but remembered to drive fast so he would not get wet. Halstead parade had 5 Jeepsters and 8 of us went to Harper for the parade with a good representation from Midian and fine hospitality from the Harper County Shrine Club. It was a great parade and great fellow- Page 8 NORM CONLEY Reporter ship. Harper Parade pictures are on Facebook, also. After many years of karting without a serious incident, it happened to Noble Austin Henry August 3. He had a failed brake linkage at 95MPH, which led to a concussion with memory loss and a broken clavicle. He got a plate put in. We did our part and reminded him of money he owed us. Hopefully, Noble Austin will be healthy enough to compete at the Nationals in 2 months. The unit is planning for CSSA competition August 23. Central States Motor Men included Captain Lynn Ungles, Cy Lampe, Mickey West, Ron Stowell, Bob Ragsdale, Al Cooper, Jeff Breault, me, and Jerod Cox. We hope Noble Rocky McWilliams can make it. We missed Noble Reiferd Acord Oriental Guide again. He and Lady Judy were still in Wesley Hospital, but he is walking down the hallways now. Keep Noble Reiferd and Lady Judy in your thoughts and prayers. Noble Charlie Kelly is doing better after his back surgery recovery. Williams Construction General Contractor Commercial - Industrial New Construction Remodeling METAL BUILDINGS Allen Williams, President 316-264-1964 Hillbilly Band No wonder we’re tired…and it’s going to get worse. Since last column we’ve performed in the Park City 4th of July parade (where for the second time we won the “Best in Parade” trophy), then played a concert in their park. Inclement weather forced our scheduled outdoor concert inside at Larksfield Place Assisted Living. Shortly thereafter the reverse was true as construction work at associated Larksfield Place Health Center moved us outside to perform in their beautiful gazebo and courtyard. Mother Nature took pity on us…that day was the only clear one between two weeks of rain. “Thanks, Mom!” As you read this our August 31st performance should have marked the conclusion of another successful season at the Old Town Farmer’s Market. These are fun for us and audience alike and about as informal and laid-back as it gets. We considered a new motto, “will play for produce!” but thought it might be too “corn-y”! September 8th we’ll renew our friendship with Crystal Norris, well known in healthcare JOHN HECKMAN Reporter circles and new activities director for the Avita Senior Living Center on South Maize Court. We’ll work their Grandparent’s Day ice cream social from 3:00 until 4:00 PM, then several of our troop will hurry to the Million Dollar Band’s annual picnic later that afternoon. September 14th it’s a welcome return to the Reflection Ridge Retirement Center theater from 1:00 until 2:00 PM. Wednesday the 18th we’ll work the “Midian Stated Rehearsal” from 6:30 to 7:15 PM. Saturday the 21st will be a challenge; two jobs in one busy day! We’re the traditional opening act at the Sedgwick park gazebo about 11:45. It’s work an hour, then pack and run to downtown Valley Center for a Fall Festival event, a downtown street show at 2:00 PM. September concludes with a much-awaited return (by us and, we hope, the audience as well) to the Masonic Home west auditorium for a 6:30 PM concert Tuesday the 24th. Gotta go…CSSA and other news next month. Midian Shrine Topics Page 9 Midian Classics Cliff Premer Reporter Seems like “parade season” just begun a few weeks ago and we already find ourselves trying to recover from CSSA. In August we had our monthly meeting with our Ladies at the Caffe Moderne in Old Town where we finalized plans for CSSA. Those making the trip to Branson were; Noble Gary Harris and Lady Jan, Noble Cliff Premer and Lady Kay and their daughter Amanda, Noble Jim Groff and Lady Judy, Noble Ron Boese and Lady Carol, Noble Gene Alexander and Lady Melinda, Noble Bob Giesen and Lady Feryl, Noble Bob Fox and Lady Donna, and Noble John Stewart and Lady Shirley. While in Branson we took in a couple of shows. A crowd favorite was The Duttons who put on a fabulous show. And speaking of “shows”…we can’t forget our own personal Classics favorite…our very own Lady Carol who jumped at the opportunity to be on stage and be a part of the comedy act while we enjoyed our river boat ride on the Showboat Branson Belle. We have pictures and video of Lady Carol’s performance that we’ll try to bundle up and put on DVD just in time for Christmas stocking stuffers. By the way, we also made time to squeeze in the Show Car competition Friday morning where we had seven cars entered in three divisions. Once scores were tallied and presentations made at the Motor Corp Banquet, the Classics were proud to bring home two 2nd place trophies, one in the Antique division and one in the Commercial Truck division. Great job Nobles! Are you interested in Classic Cars? Come join the fun with the Midian Classics. We meet on the 2nd Wednesday of each month in the Pyramid Room at 7:00 PM. If you’re interested in finding out more about the Classics, contact Noble Bob Giesen at 316-721-4178, or stop by during one of our meetings. Keystone Kops The Koppers are back from the “Brawl in Branson”. We took no prisoners, except those in the skit and parade we preformed. We may have abused the prisoners a little but made up for it in the evening social “hour” or “two”. Where we stroked their egos and offered them some sacrificial refreshments. Then we plied all our Ladies with libations as we wooed them with our trademark song about some “Friends in Low Places”. Oh yeah, did we ever have some fun in Branson! We Keystone Kops always do that. We have a reputation to live up to, you know? CSSA is always the greatest time of the year to get together and enjoy all the Shriners and their Ladies. It is a must go and see for all of us and you. I hope you made it to Branson. If not, there is always next year. We had a little scare right before leaving for Branson. It seems we were parading in Harper and while we were loading the Paddy Wagon onto our hauler the brakes gave out on it. Before Ole Hurley could getter to whoa it hit the cab of the hauler. Well, Keystone Kops can overcome most anything. That is when Kopper Kale Pickett stepped up and did his magic. He fixed the hauler and off to Branson we went. Thanks Kale, you were there when it counted! May the Bird of Happiness fly up your nose and an elephant caress you with his toes! Maybe now the Kops will get the brakes fixed on the Paddy Wagon instead of just talking about it at every parade? The Kops also paraded at the Shrine Provost Guard Arab Patrol LARRY WILSON Reporter Other than drill practice, there hasn’t been much going on in the Patrol. We attempted something new at the Kansas Shrine Bowl by having a tail gate party with a dunk tank and a snow cone stand. However, Mother Nature wasn’t on our side this year. The cooler weather and rain kind of put a damper on things so we did not make money for the Shrine Bowl. Thanks go out to all who helped out and include 2nd Lt Brian West for loaning us a trailer which 1st Lt Larry Tomes used to bring up the tent and equipment for the stand, Also thanks go to Sgt Devon Olson for obtaining and hauling the Dunk Tank, Past Captain Dick Simpson, Adjutant Mike Smith, Veteran Patrolman Kyle Rhorer, 2nd Lt and Captain of the Guard Jay Danler, patrolman Foster Smith and Lady Michelle Tomes for setting up and helping out with the concessions. Great job, gang! Because of the weather, the consensus was to skip the parade in Halstead and Mulvane was too close to CSSA and decided not to march there as well. Practice has been going very well with some additional veteran patrol helping out with the Color Guard including Terry House, Terry Pennington, Ron Dehart and Ron Smith. Of course, we couldn’t survive without the help and advice from the active veterans Kyle Rhorer, Ron Fisher. The Sportsman’s Raffle was pretty busy with Patrolmen Kyle Rhorer, Larry Tomes, Alan Geist, Devon Olson, Loyd Geist, Ray Sanders, Dave Balderson, and Matt Miller in attendance and helping out in various capacities. I understand almost 20 kegs of beer, 1000 hamburgers and the same amount of hotdogs were consumed. Well, that’s it for this month. Keep in step! ATTENTION MASTER MASONS: Keep looking, Masonic prospects are everywhere! You do not have to be a detective to search out new Shriners. Don’t forget to look in your family tree …..That is where the best prospects are hiding! SEPTEMBER, 2013 The Midian Shrine Provost will be in competition at the CSSA in Branson Missouri this year. The Provost has won many awards at CSSA and this year should be no different. Our Provost Marshall Donald Brunhoebr had put together an outstanding team of Midian Nobles that should do very well at Branson. Midian has had a long history of being the winner of the traveling trophy which represents the best of the best. Next month we will have a full report in the Topics on the Results of the Provost at CSSA The Horse Patrol What a wet August we have had. Because of the rain this reporter was afraid of the water that was to be in Halstead. As we go to press there are 15 nobles and their ladies, plus 2 guest going to the Dixie Stampede in Branson at CSSA. Since there will not be any horses going, we “MOON” Reporter Bowl. We had a really good turnout for all the festivities up there in Topeka. The new copper dome on the State Capitol wasn’t uncovered yet, but it was something to see all those “porta pots” up there surrounding it! Think about it, could you get in one knowing you are 200 feet in the air? We also had a little bomb scare while we were staged for the parade. We didn’t mind the wait, as the weather had cooled down and we were well stocked for staging! Then we had a weird parade where we went down one side of the main drag, passing the front of the parade going back down the other side, where we ended up also. First parade I have ever been in, and I have been to plenty, that was ever like it. Oh, I know we had a good turnout up there when I looked in the back of the Paddy Wagon and saw all the “empties”. Danny “Treetop” Oliver, you are going to have to muzzle some of them to keep us afloat. Kopper news: Ole Jack turned 70 and what a party he had! A new expression has been started by our Chief Mark Brown. It goes like “I thought…….” I thought someone had gotten the nurses’ station picked up from the park”. But two days later Jackie got a call that no one had done such and thus “I thought” came out of the Chief’s mouth! I Wonder?? Will “I thought” replace I Wonder?? I Wonder?? 200 feet up, would you?? I Wonder?? How about those new Keystone Kop patrol cars?? I Thought?? RICHARD BENNETT Reporter Provost has received word that Noble Derek Cookson is recovering from back surgery. Andrew Snow is doing well after suffering a heart attack and Ollie Dickson is also doing better after being injured in car wreck. The Provost has decided to raffle a Browning Shotgun for our fund raiser for the Plane of Mercy. Browning guns are a quality product and are highly prized. Make sure you get your ticket for this one. You don’t want to miss this chance. GEORGE FINLEY Reporter thought that we would just go and have some fun. I missed a birthday in August , Kevin Holub, August 8th. For September the birthdays are, Nobles Fred Taylor, the 9th, Jim Hays the 15th and Lady Carrie is on the 15th. Until next time. After the normal agenda we got into specifics as to when to be where Friday to gather supplies and Saturday to actually prepare to feed the masses of guests that are expected. Sounds like the plan is workable, as well as PLAN “B” if needed. After being released from the Hospital she had to go back in two days and then was moved to Colombia, Mo. where they have some very major facilities. There, with more extensive tests, it was decided the mass creating the problem was most likely cancerous and even though she is 94, need to be removed. The operation was conducted Aug 6, and as of the 15th all signs and tests showed no signs of any cancer through out her body. She is expected to be back in her room at the assisted living home where she resides within a week. Thanks to all of my Shrine family for their prayers and thoughts.
