vol. 68 issue 5 Potentate’s Message MTopics IDIAN May, 2013 It’s Great to be a Shriner! Wichita, Kansas 2013 Potentate’s Ball LONNIE NICHOLS WOW! The year is going very fast. It’s hard to believe that May is already here. April went by like a flash. I want to thank everyone that helped with the Potentate’s Ball and Breakfast. It was a great weekend that Melinda and I will never forget. Chief Aide Harold Brewer and his lady Phyllis along with the Executive Aides and Aides did a great job. High Priest and Prophet Bart Ogden was even easy on me at the roast. Spring Pre-Glo and Ceremonial is May 3rd and 4th. I hope everyone will come and support the new nobles. On Friday night at Pre-Glo the Greenwood Co. Shrine Club will once again bring their grill over and cook some great steaks. That evening is a great time to meet the new candidates and welcome them to this great fraternity. Ceremonial Day will be a busy day. My Lady Melinda is planning a great Ladies Luncheon and I hope everyone can attend. I hope the nobility will come early and attend the First Section to support the new nobles. It will be a full day with the Second Section, Arch Ceremony, Parade and After-Glo. May 11th Midian will be having a new nobles party. Marshal Brian Byrd is planning a great evening. We all need to come and welcome Midian’s newest nobles. Midian will have its annual Winfield Golf Tournament on May 18th and 19th.Captain of the Guard Jay Danler See Potentate, page 3 2013 Potentate’s Ball Topics Reporters: YOUR ARTICLE FOR THE JUNE TOPICS IS DUE MAY 15, 2013 e-mail to [email protected] 300 words or less in lower and upper case (not all capitals) Topics Contents: Pg 2 Midian Officers, Annual Schedule; Pg 3 Plane of Mercy; Pg 4 Clubs Articles; Pg 5 Units Articles; Pg 8 Current Month Calendar; Pg 12 Business Directory; Pg 14 Ladies Article; Pg 15 Divan Photos Midian Shrine Topics Page 2 MAY, 2013 2013 APPROVED PARADE LIST MAY Sat. 4..............................................Spring Ceremonial ParadeLU 3:00 pm - Parade 4:00 pm Sat. 11.......................................................Anthony Sunflower Balloon Fest - Parade 2:00 pm JUNE Sat.1............................................................................................Eureka Days Parade Sat. 22............................................................................................Kechi Fair Parade @10:00am JULY Thur. 4..........................................................Hutchinson’s 4th of July Parade - No details Sat. 6..........................................................Toronto Days Festival Parade - no other details Sat. 12..........................................................Wellington Wheat Festival Parade @ 8:00 pm Sat. 27...............................................Ks. Hobo President Noble Don Dody and his Unit arranged an informal “rescue” loan to help the Club cover expenses until the Circus check arrives mid-summer. Club President Noble Lenny Wild and Circus Chairman Noble Donnie Anderson thanked all who worked so hard on Circus sales, reminding us once again that those sales and the commissions they generate are absolutely vital to survival of the Club. Our “thinking of you” best wishes extend at this writing to Noble Gene Shepherd, home after hospitalization; Past President JOHN HECKMAN Reporter Noble Wallace Hill, in rehab at Newton Medical Center following hip replacement surgery; and Noble Ron Farthing, at Wichita’s Presbyterian Manor, recovering from a second hip surgery. As you read this the first Hobo outing of the year, weather-permitting, was the Benton Days parade the afternoon of April 27th. Upcoming is Spring Ceremonial at 4:00 PM May 4th and the McPherson All School’s Day parade 10:30 AM Friday, May 10th. Hobo VP Noble Rex Yohn is looking for a couple of extra Toter drivers to relieve him and Noble Lonnie Patterson. No special license or equipment is required, just a good driving record and the desire to have fun. Interested? Call Noble Rex at 772-3007, get signed-up, then come smile with us, the fun-iest Club in Midian. Dodge City Shrine Club “Doc” McCosh Reporter Seek not to change the world, but choose to change your mind about the world. What you see reflects your thinking. And your thinking but reflects your choice of what you want to see. Right now, and in every now-moment, you are either closing or opening. You are either stressfully waiting for something - more money, security, affection - or you are living from your deep heart, opening as the entire moment, and giving what you most deeply desire to give, without waiting. The Dodge City Shrine Club held their APRIL 2013 meeting at Central Station on Wednesday, the 10th April 2013. We had a nice turnout for the weather turning cold this time of year and this was the fourth meeting of the year. Our Liaison from the Wichita Midian, Oriental Guide, Reiferd Acord, and his lovely wife, Lady Judy, did not get out here this month. Brother Reiferd has been going through some medical issues this past month. So please put Brother Reiferd and his wife Judy into your daily prayers for a super quick recovery and getting back on his feet soon. Both Reiferd and Judy were truly missed this month, they have become like family to us here in Dodge. The Dodge City Shrine will hold the Dodge City Days Kiddie Parade again for another year during Dodge City Days. The Shrine Circus for 2014 will be held February 7th, 8th, and 9th. So please put this on your calendar for 2014 and it will be held at the Dodge City Civic Center at 2100 Central Ave. Remember to put the monthly meetings on your 2013 calendar and come out and help support these wonderful individuals who give their time and energy in keeping the Dodge City Shrine Club and Clown group going. The May 8th, 2013 meeting will be held at Casey’s Cowtown Club – 503 E. Trail St., Dodge City, KS (620) 227 – 5225, in Dodge City. Social time starts at 6:30 pm. Dinner is at 7:00 pm. If I say, “A lotus for you, Buddha to be.” It means, I see clearly the Buddha nature in you. It may be difficult for you to accept that the seed of Buddha is in you - but - we all have the capacity for faith, awakening, understanding, and awareness, and that is meant by Buddha nature. There is no one who does not have the capacity to be a Buddha. “Good night America wherever you are.” “May All Your Days Be Circus Days” Kingman Couny Not to much happening in KM CO. Some excitement for Noble Roland Belcher. It was a close race for the last seat on Kingman City Commission, Roland won by two votes. OTTO STUBER Reporter Now he has more things to worry about. Blue Lodge in Kingman getting prepared for more work will be having a fly in soon. I’m off to the Oasis. www.dignitymemorial.com Here it is May already. We are hoping for good weather and a good turn-out for Spring Ceremonial. If you can, come to Ceremonial. Not only is it important to get new Nobles to Ceremonial, but it is important to be there ourselves to provide the interaction and fun that makes this a great organization. We all believe in the philanthropy we support, but isn’t it great that we can have fun while we are doing it? The April meeting was real thin on attendance. It is amazing the impact that weather has on all our lives. In this case the precipitation with cold temperatures, making some roads slick, must have put a damper on the event. I hope it wasn’t because everyone was working on their taxes. The hearty souls Reno Couny Reno County Shrine Club President, Noble Donald Carlson opened the meeting by welcoming those present and then calling upon Liaison Officer, Midian Chaplin, Noble Kent Butz for the opening invocation. He then led the group in the pledge of allegiance to our flag and dismissed us for a fine meal. President Don Carlson called us from refreshments to labor, and request that Noble Bob Hannigan, Secretary read the minutes of the Shrine Club and the Scottish Rite Clubs of Reno County for the month of February. The minutes being approved he called upon Acting Treasurer Noble Dennis Regier for a treasurer report for the Reno County Shrine Club and the Reno County Scooter Patrol. The Treasurer report was approved; we are in good financial condition. President Carlson called up Noble Kent Butz for the Liaison report. Kent gave a very thorough report on the many up coming events that the Midian Shrine has undertaken for the coming months. He covered everything from the Stated Meetings to the Easter Egg Party, the Potentates Ball and everything in between. “Look like the Midian Shrine has already geared up for another success- Williams Construction General Contractor Commercial - Industrial New Construction Remodeling METAL BUILDINGS Allen Williams, President 316-264-1964 MAY, 2013 ARV KRUMMINS Reporter that showed up carried on business and enjoyed the food and the good company. We need to deal with two upcoming meetings here. What is now a great tradition will be the Chuck Wagon Feed on June 8 th hosted by Noble Jim Reeves. Since it is so early in the month, we need to get a good count before the next Topics. So get in touch with President Chris Nelson by email at [email protected] or by phone at 316-648-3775 to let us know how many are coming. It will be an authentic style old time western meal and some good entertainment. We also want to let you know about the next meeting. It will be May 8 th at 6 pm at the Pizza Hut in Augusta. See you all there. BOB HANNIGAN Reporter ful year”. President, Noble Carlson reminded everyone that they need to line up their prospect for the All Masonic Affiliate Prospect Night that will be held on April 16th. The Reno County Shrine Club, the Reno County Scooter Patrol and the Reno County Scottish Rite Club each pledged fmancial assistance towards the Kansas Masonic High School Marching Band. Noble Rodman gave a good sales pitch towards the purchase of tickets to the First Annual Sportsmen’s Raffle that is being sponsored by the Midian Shrine. Shrine President Carlson turned the meeting over to Noble Jerry Rodman 33deg, President of the Reno County Scottish Rite Club so as to conduct Scottish Rite business. President Rodman called upon Treasurer, Bob Hannigan, 32nd for a financial report, which was given and approved. The Meeting was adjourned with a closing prayer by Midian Chaplin, Kent Butz. Visitors are always welcome and reservations are not required, just show up, however if you wish to get on the calling list, just call Noble Don Carlson @ 620-665-0384 . MAY, 2013 Midian Shrine Topics Harper County GARY UMMEL Reporter Harper County was visited by Noble Hurley and The Gang in April. Hurley did a great job as our substitute Liaison in Noble Brian Byrd’s absence. Hurley brought with him an entourage of Nobility including Past Potentate Noble Terry Schrant. We were certainly grateful to see and welcome in all of the visiting guests which featured Kops, Oriental Bandsmen, and some old friendly familiar faces. We will soon reveal the winner of our Annual Turkey Shoot $500.00 Visa Gift Card Raffle Winner. The Topics deadline is prior to the drawing so we will get you that information next month. The T’s wish to welcome any parade unit who may be interested in joining us at The Balloon Fest Parade and Bucking T Hospitality in Anthony Kansas in May. See Parade List in Topics for further details. Thanks to Lady Cheryl Moon for assisting Greenwood County As expected, we had a large contingency of Greenwood County Nobles and Ladies at the Potentate’s Ball to honor our very own Illustrious Sir Lonnie Nichols and Lady Melinda. Reports are, everyone had a great time at the Masquerade Ball. Then, at the breakfast Sunday, I hear there were some pictures shown and stories told of some of Lonnie’s colorful past… right Hun? The food was great and once again, in Greenwood County tradition, we had a great party at Midian! Thanks to all the Nobles and Ladies that helped pull it off. Unfortunately, we were unable to attend because I was on a business trip to Las Vegas, during the same time. Yes, it was a business trip! By the time you are reading this, we will have parked cars at Midian’s Car The Harper Masonic Lodge in a fund raising concession stand recently in Harper. When the members of the round table weren’t selling hot dogs and cold drinks they were in theory solving crisis issues with the city, county, state, local school district, and federal governments. When all was said and done the only landmark decision put into play was to form an Easy Eli’s Credit Corporation. Noble Eli Irvin, Founder and CEO, will begin a door to door campaign soon. Charter members of the group will receive a free light bulb repair kit. Standard shipping and handling costs may apply. Offer not valid in Jersey. Bonus Topics, I remember us riding in my brother’s car, her body tan and wet down at the reservoir. CARL “C.F.” COX Reporter Show, and Spring Pre-Glow and Ceremonial will be upon us the first weekend in May. Final plans are being made for the annual Greenwood County Steak Feed during pre-glow. We still need help Friday afternoon to get everything ready. If you can make it, be at the Temple about 3:00. We may also still be in need of desserts from our wonderful ladies. If you would like to make a dessert, or are able to come and help, the more the merrier! There is nothing better than a Greenwood County steak cooked over an open fire. If anyone needs tickets, they are on sale at Midian as long as supplies last. Tickets are $15.00 each and we hope to have another sell-out. Once again, no news is not always good news! If you have anything, please send some of it my way! RECRUIT A SHRINER Golden VIPS Golden VIP’s met in the Masonic Home for lunch. The social time with our membership was great as always. President Bill Weber opened the meeting, asked for the Flag Salute by David Pate, PP. Our opening prayer was by Joan Harris. Guests were introduced; Sherman Padgett, Head Principal, North High School, Wichita, and Jerry & Carol McDaniel and Potentate Lonnie Nichols. The lunch and dessert was prepared by the Chef’s at the Masonic Home and was enjoyed by all. After the opening remarks by our president, he introduced our guest speaker, Sherman Padgett, Head Principal of North High School, Wichita. President Bill commented that an Aunt of his was in the very first graduating class of North High and a vast number of his relation and children as is himself are humble graduates of North High School and are proud to shout the slogan; “Go Redskins”! Mr. Padgett stated that he is a graduate of Kansas University and taught school in the Kansas City area for several years after graduation. At the time it was a girlfriend that actually brought him to Wichita. After several visits, Mr. Padgett fell in love with Wichita and sought a teaching position in USD259 starting at South High School, then accepting a position at Heights High School where he became the Assistant Principal. He was asked to take the position at the NE Magnet School for one year after which he became the Head Ambassadors The Potentate’s Masquerade Ball was a blast for everyone that attended. In fact, it wasn’t easy for Midian’s Ambassadors to be recognized; and maybe that’s a good thing. This was the Potentate’s special night and with his inclusion now in the Ambassadors it made each of our group outlined for fun. Many thanks to Noble Ambassador Larry Kohlman and Lady Sherry Burnett for hosting our monthly party time on the 26th. Everything was just right at the Scotch and Sirloin and nobody seemed to care what your preference might be. We’re all glad to see Noble Ambassador Ray Barber and Lady Anne back from Texas. These two kids celebrated their anniversary April 8th . Lady Shirley Stewart celebrated her birthday on April 14th. News from the Beacon has it that Noble Ambassador Billy West has been having a little trouble with the preparation of Pizza in Nomads Our first camp out in April was a great success with 22 campers and 90 in attendance for the meeting and auction. It was great to get out and see all our Midian Nomad Shrine family. Thank you to the Ladies Oriental Shrine for preparing a wonderful breakfast. Thoughts and prayers for those that are ill are Noble Les Osterman and Lady Joetta Holub. Ruth Towns has moved to Park West Page 5 DAVID PATE Reporter Principal for North High. Mr. Sherman said that the school systems are rapidly changing and their teaching is still centered around the 3-R’s. However, instead of “Readin, Rightn and Rithmatic”, their mission is teaching to a new set of 3-R’s; “Rigor – Relevance – Relationships”. He explained what each of the new R’s meant to the students in detail. He told us that the school’s goals are not so much to prepare the kids for college, rather “ready the kids for college using the new 3-R’s. Mr. Sherman was presented one of the VIP’s most prestigious and much sought after coffee cup. He was excited about receiving the cup and promised to use it regularly! President Weber then Introduced the Potentate, Lonnie Nichols. Lonnie, speaking to the membership and Mr. Sherman compared the 3-R’s to Shriner’s New Nobles, our goal is to promote rigor, point out the relevance of the Shrine and as with the students, and get them involved. Potentate continued with what is happening at Midian, reminded the membership of the Potentate’s Ball coming up quickly and other important events at Midian. At his conclusion, he promised to come back again as he is our liaison. President presented the Potentate with one of the VIP’s most prestigious and much sought after coffee cup. Closing prayer was given and the meeting was adjourned until May 9th, same time and same place. JOHN STEWART Mild Mannered Reporter the oven at home. It seems that the Pizza caught fire and burned up the entire stove as well as the cabinets above. A new kitchen is on order and the next Pizza will be the carry out kind. Adding insult to injury, Billy lost the flip that morning and had to buy everybody’s coffee. Noble Ambassador Kenny Loffland showed up with coffee cake another morning. He wouldn’t admit that Lady Billy had made this super treat until everyone exclaimed how good it tasted. That same morning Noble Ambassador Robert “Doc” Norris, M.D. came in with a sack of “home-made peanut clusters”. Now this is living. All you have to do to get’in on this is show your “Food Handlers” permit. (The one you got to qualify to serve at Hartman Arena for the Circus). That’s about it. The Spring Ceremonial is upon us. Midian Shrine Topics Page 6 Horse Patrol Our first Parade was in the Delano District for St. Patrick’s Day. Those riding were Nobles DeWane Ewert and George Finley. We did enlist Demolay Andrew Mason to run the Scooper, but a good time was had by GEORGE FINLEY Reporter all. Our next Parade will be the Spring Ceremonial. Maybe we can get another Horse on the Street. We only have one birthday for May. Which is Lady Betty Perry on the 10th. Until next time. Keystone Kops Here it is May 2013 already and parade season is upon us. Spring Ceremonial is Saturday, May 4th. Actually the parade season started back in March with the St. Patrick’s Day parade. Wow! That is what I am told about that parade and that day. It has become the premiere parade in Wichita according to my sources. It was wall to wall parade watchers for our Koppers to perform our infamous skits and antics. We had plenty of Midian Keystone Kops there to do all of them. There were so many they couldn’t all fit on the Paddy Wagon. Then it was off to the Burger Barn for lunch and even a food challenge. Fellow Koppers, Bob “Turf” Dukes and Tony Schultz took on the food challenge. Now, you should know that both are pretty big ole boys and it looked like a “free” meal deal to both of them. The Kops and Koppettes divided into their favorite person sides and the food was served up. They each had to eat 2 lbs of hamburger and 2 lbs of French fries in 20 minutes for it to be “free”. Not a problem for them on an empty stomach? The burgers were consumed with ease, as the cheering sections egged them on. Next up, the mountain of fries with plenty of time left. But alas, it was not to be. The fries did not slide down so easily for the “boys” and time ran out and they didn’t get the job done. It was a fun time for all who attended but I think ole “Cupcake” knew what he was up to. You see Cupcake owns the Burger Electraglide Elite Midian Classics Spring is already here with the St. Patrick’s Parade in the Delano District, 2012 Circus and the Potentate’s Masquerade Ball behind us. Spring Ceremonial and CSSA are coming at us fast. Rumor has it that Noble Bob Giesen may be upgrading his 1918 Detroit Electric. It seems that Detroit Electric is restarting to make all electric DETROIT ELECTRIC cars, beginning with the SP:01 sports car with a top speed of 155 and 0 to 60 in 3.7seconds, claimed to be quicker than just about every other car out of Detroit! Another hot story is that Noble Cliff Premer’s Firebird is nearing completion of full restoration; the seats completed and upholstery being finalized. We are looking forward to the grand début of this Lady! Out club leadership continues planning for a successful and fun CSSA. Noble Ron Boese and Noble Gary Harris will be attending CSASMC Mid-winter meeting in Oklahoma City at the end of April. The Midian Classics already have plans in motions for CSSA in Branson including a diner cruise onboard the majestic Branson Belle Paddle Boat. Competition strategies are …, well, they are top secret. Upcoming activities: The Midian Classics will be at the Benton parade April 27th and at the WSU & Midian Shrine Car Show April 28th. He was voted into our membership at our last business meeting. It really is a business meeting, as we are always giving someone the “business” at them! I understand that Isaac”s nickname, Cupcake, and his whole life is the basis for the TV reality show “Cupcake Wars”. I tried to Goggle it for verification, but I got mixed up in the “batter of it all” and couldn’t. Welcome aboard Cupcake and may you always be swwweet! Spring is here and with it the Midian Keystone Kops are springing forward to the future. As our unit continues to grow we will be presenting our “new look” at Spring Ceremonial, if everything goes as planned. Reporter of the flyers, sponsor letters and contributor info so that you can hand them out. Extremely well done and very easy to understand – these tools can really help us make this event for Shriners Hospitals and our own Plane of Mercy the huge success it deserves to be. As announced at our April Meeting, there are Hats, Shirts, Koozies and some very limited collector’s edition items being produced for this event. You’ll soon be able to tell your Midian Bros. that these items are for sale in the Show Counter of the main lobby. These are all going to help the cause, but the key piece right now is to promote Sponsorship to businesses and individuals for the MSKR. The Sponsor letters clearly explain how the Sponsorships work, they are tax deductable for your Sponsors and will give the EE some necessary cash for our other expenses. If you have a Sponsor prospect and need some assistance closing them, let Brother David Ryan know. He’ll help or arrange with another Officer to do so. So Nobles get your ladies and put your “fun” hats on, grab a neighbor and come join us. By the way when you “grab” that neighbor, make sure you put an application in his hand, just a suggestion!, he’ll appreciate you for it. Nobles and Veterans, as I mentioned in last month’s article, we are doing some new and special things. We’re putting together a Nascarts Man has this weather been crazy or what? Every week I come home from a race, I either have to shovel snow or mow my yard. In the last month, I have shoveled snow twice and mowed three times! Sure is a good thing I got myself the lawnhawg. You can see a picture of it on my facebook page. If you aint my friend then I guess you need to get in the 21st century brother! I did get to spend some quality time with my cousin Joe Bob after the Richmond race. He needed some dental work done, so I got thirty-five of his friends together to get him a new set of teeth. Some moonshine and a hammer fixed that though. Knocked the snot bubbles right out of him. Lots of progress bein made on the kart construction. Vet’s we have in the past, raised our right hand and took the oath to protect and defend, and in doing so we accepted the age old belief of Duty, Honor, Country. Well Nobles when we again raised our right hand and in doing so we put that “FEZ” on and in doing so we again voluntarily accepted the responsibility of not only Duty, Honor, Country, but also took on the responsibility of helping those who can’t necessarily help themselves. The Kids! So with that in mind, we are again asking you to take some time to visit with us, and see what we are doing, and we would gladly consider it an honor and privilege to have you join us in the Legion of Honor. “RICK-N-BOBBY” Reporter motors mounted on frames just in time for parade season. The amendment to Yoshi by-laws has Hillbilly Band Touchdowners Well fellow Nobles here we are again, one month closer to “Golf” day. I certainly hope you all have been practicing!, because there are certainly some very excellent prizes, $$$$$$$! We won’t be giving away any “Green” jackets, but there will be a lot of fun and some very nice prizes, besides we’ll be able to raise a lot of money to help those kids. Right!!! This article is going to be a little different than most, because I wanted to give you all a brief insight of the man you will all have the privilege of meeting, and the man who is greatly assisting us by providing a very fantastic course to hold our tournament. This article is about a very unique and special individual, and his name is Chris Tuohey. Chris is the General Manager of Sand Creek Station Golf course. I wanted to write this article and provide you with some in site as to this unique person. Chris started back in New Orleans when he was a course manager for Kemper Sports in New Orleans, and definitely got caught up in Hurricane Katrina. Chris was a manager with Kemper Sports in the heart of New Orleans. When the Katrina hit he was stranded in 8-9 feet of water in his home for 8-9 days. When he realized that he had basically lost everything he moved his family to Little Rock, Arkansas. As good fortune would have it for us he was offered a position as General Manager to manage a “golf” course in all places yes, Newton, Kansas. In July 1, 2006 Chris became the General Manger of Sand Creek Station in James Graham Reporter Newton, and has definitely done a very superb job, which I’m certain you will immediately see when YOU ALL attend the golf tournament to enjoy the day with your family, and yes raise money for the Children’s Hospital. Sand Creek Station is an outstanding course, and is considered in the Top Ten in public golf courses in the United States. Not bad UH!!! Chris is a great example of the kind of person you definitely want to be associated with. He’s on the board of the Red Cross and also belongs to an organization CASA, an organization that is an Advocate for “Abused Children”. In my personal and humble opinion he definitely sounds like someone who would make an excellent wearer of a “FEZ”. So fellow Nobles, let’s get in the basement, find and dust off those clubs, go to the driving range for a few practice swings, and oh yes find two other fellow Nobles, or friends to join you in a team, and let’s all meet at Sand Creek Station at 7AM (registration), June 15th, and let’s have some fun. Look for the advertisement in this month’s Topics for more details. We, Nobles at Midian besides being the largest Shrine in Kansas, we’re also leaders, and example setters. So let’s get together and show the rest of Kansas what Midian Shriners can do when we put our minds to it. Nobles we’re trying to double last year’s donation, of $21,000. Thanks for your help in advance because I have full faith that we will ALL together make this happen. Who needs brakes when the horn works? We had plenty of horns; two trumpets, and a trombone, with a clarinet and baritone sax for good measure on our old Model T, but little in the way of serious “whoa” in the brake department. The issue came to a head during the Fall Ceremonial parade when we “bumped” the unit ahead…no damage, no injuries…just embarrassing. We tried to blame it on driver Noble Martin Geeding, but he refused responsibility, saying it was time to “fix the “xxx” brakes on that thing!” Noble Cecil Goldsmith took the car to National Auto for its first serious repair in recent memory, and skilled technicians found Noble Martin was right....the “thing” barely had brakes! Performance had so gradually worsened over the years that current drivers didn’t know what “normal” felt like! Converted from mechanical to hydraulic more years ago than anyone now living can remember, Antique Autos Hi all! I was in Florida to get Linda only to have to drop her in Tulsa for her to help a friend who had major surgery and she is expecting to get home around May 20th. I missed the meeting so do not have any notes to work from. Our next parade will be Benton Days on April 27th, May 4th Spring Ceremonial Parade, May 11th will be the Anthony and on June 1 is the Eureka parade. We have Randy’s Klassic N Kustom Car Show on April 27th at Davis Moore West and Home Depot parking lots. We will need help with everything we have been asked to do again this year. Just so we begin to look forward, next year the Klassic N Kustom Show may be a two day event and Midian Car Show on April 28th. We will need your input to decide what parades to attend so come out and let us know which you would like to participate in. Our Christmas party will be December 7th at Prairie Rose Chuck Wagon cost will Page 11 TORRIN REED Reporter been approved and we can now announce our change. Our unit will now allow motorcycles to parade with us and to participate in public functions. The motorcycles will ride in front and back of the go-karts to help keep a safe performance area for the karts and to keep a safe zone from the public and other units. They will escort the go-karts to and from staging areas to help keep the go kart riders safer and visible. We keep in mind that this is first and foremost a go-kart unit and members with both a kart and motorcycle are encouraged to ride their karts. Yoshi will only admit motorcycles up to an equal amount of go-karts. Kart owners will not count to the total. This is a go-kart unit and removal of the karts as a parade vehicle must have a unanimous vote of ALL members. Insurance requirements are a bit higher than normal so get with a Yoshi member for details. If you have a motorcycle and would like to parade, see Yoshi! Hope to see you out there! JOHN HECKMAN Reporter marrying Studebaker and Chrysler parts to the old Ford, years of use with little maintenance resulted in almost all parts being so badly worn that a total system rebuild was performed. More next month! May performances include the Ladies’ Luncheon and Spring Ceremonial parade on the 4th, then McPherson All Schools the 10th, a concert at the Newton Kansas Christian Home the evening of the 17th, and a performance for the Cornerstone Law firm May 23rd as part of Newton’s “Fourth Thursday” promotion. More on various performances next month; we have been and will continue to be a busy little group! Last laugh: the recent Potentates Ball theme was a masquerade, and Nobles and ladies came with appropriate costumes and masks. One visiting Noble, seeing and hearing our group, quipped, “You guys are just a bunch of old farts masquerading as musicians!” Who tattled? DALE GIBSON Reporter be $29.00 per person. We have been asked to make sure all who intend on joining a parade will have their current insurance on file with Midian Shrine. Once again we are emphasizing, our Antique Autos group would really like to see all the members that would like to attend meetings to be able to do so. Please call me (Dale Gibson) at 361-0758 or 993-4463 and leave a message. I will make the arrangements to get a ride provided. Please let me know of any birthdays I am missing and I know I am missing several. Please keep the family of Noble Harold Russell in your thoughts and prayers as the Black Camel has visited our group once again. Our next meeting will be Monday May 6th. Let’s try to be represented at as many parades as possible during the year, and have as much fun as we legally can; however, be ever mindful that everything we do is for our Shrine kids. The Ladies of the Court knew we’d been busy, but when you read all the reports at one time…. Wow what a lot of things collected, events planned and attended! The best of all is taking a few minutes to reflect on the fun, laughs and fellowship for the group! Co gradations to all for their accomplishments in 2013 The Grand Council Reports were read and approved. The Grand Council registration forms have been completed and sent off. Sunshine, Rain, Sleet, Snow and Ice just cannot keep our members away from our events. Even though the weather was not favorable on installation we still had a beautiful Installation inside at the Scottish Rite Center. Queen Julie Ward and her line officer’s were installed for the year. We had a reception immediately following and dinner at River City Brewery. What a great time with great fun, food and fellowship. Thank You to all who participated whether it be in preparation, during the ceremony, Reception (Thank you to the Rainbow Girls for serving cake and punch Midian Shrine Topics DIANA RICHECKEY PHP Reporter The Kandyland Clowns joined with Midian and the Easter Bunny to entertain at Children’s Easter Party. The Lady Clowns came in their Easter Best Clown wear. The children kept the clowns busy painting faces! A good time was had by one and all. Thanks to Illustrious Sir Lonnie and Lady Melinda for the invitation to participate in the event! The School of Instruction was held. The discussion and questions from the Ladies was wonderful. Lots of questions were cleared up and all that attended learned lots from each other. It proved to be a chance to address special situations as well as refresh on the familiar task. The food was great and as always lots of giggles and laughs. Midian’s newest unit, the Nomads have invited the Ladies to serve their Saturday Morning breakfast again this year. Thanks to the Nomads! The Ladies always enjoy the lake and all the members of the Nomads. Each of the units is going to serve breakfast for specific months, with the Court Ladies in total serving the remaining months.
