Starboard’s challenge is to help create a popular Olympic
windsurfing class for the largest possible participation. Jim Drake
has been at the forefront of the Z Class project, with meetings
inside ISAF, visits to evaluation events and presentations of
carefully thought out class rules.
We hope to see Z class boards from all brands compete as early
as the Siam cup 04 and further in Olympic trials, but more
importantly in all the thousands of local races before the 08
games. The Formula Experience class can become the
inexpensive Olympic feeder class recruiting young sailors for
Olympic windsurfing.
Z class boards are early planing hulls very close to Formula
designs. An extended and sharpened front area produces a
longer waterline, which in collaboration with a centerboard and
mast track, makes for brilliant tactical non planing light-wind
sailing. Once the wind comes up the track moves back, the
centerboard retracts and the bow lifts out of the water providing
a full-on Formula windsurfing feel.
Thousands of sailing and yacht clubs around the world will finally
find it interesting to facilitate for a popular style of windsurfing,
suiting their Olympic sailing programs.
The class concept allows several similar but different shapes to
fit within a tight “design box”. The Z class invites different
manufacturers to register their own class-legal equipment for an
Olympic cycle, providing versatility, freedom of choice, better
support, service, availability and increased participation.
Since the very first time the sport took part in the Games in Los
Angeles 1984, the One Design concept has kept stalling Olympic
windsurfing.
Today no “one design” class is active anymore, only the Olympic
class which artificially survives on Olympic funding. Just like a
skier chooses his ski for the games, a windsurfer should be able
to select a registered class board.
It’s time to bring windsurfing to the next level.

The next generation of boards and sailors are here to take windsurfing
to the next level.
Seeing 6 year old Joergen and 9 year old Connor blasting around inspired
us to develop a whole new generation of boards scaled to their size. The
Pro Kids range is the coolest program we have ever been involved in,
adding a whole new face to windsurfing.
Promoting the prospects of a whole new Olympic windsurfing class is a
challenge Starboard has been at the forefront of during the last 18
months. A new style of super early planing boards which works well also in
non planing conditions were the product brief for our Z-Class boards. We
look forward towards China 2008, and especially the thousands of races
to be held before then, including the Formula Experience class events that
hopefully will become the future recruitment events.
The Kombat is our new blend. A “curved to fit” multipurpose vehicle
combining the best of our Freeride and Evo lines, into a no fear, no bull,
cross over fun and fly package.
Fast and furious S-types are on the way to bring a whole new sporty feel
to freeriding, while instead of waiting the F-type transforms non sailing
days into a full planing adrenaline fix.
The Express, the world’s only modern center fin board, built with a light
sandwich construction. Potentially the most popular board concept today.
The new Starsurfer is a favorite. A great toy for kids and parents alike.
Svein started windsurfing in 1978 and won the Mistral Worlds in 1983. He
was a gold medallist candidate for the 1984 Olympics and spent 10 years on
the PWA pro circuit. In 1991 he became the first sailor to win all disciplines in
the IFCA Production-board Class Worlds.

production. Svein is as the sole owner of the brand he founded in 1994, still
involved in overlooking every step of the Starboard concept from shaping to
shipping.
We have further developed all ranges by building and testing more
prototype boards and fittings than ever before. Our services are growing
and thanks to all the outstanding personalities that support Starboard, we
are ready to continue taking windsurfing to the next level.

Jim Drake
Our very good friend Jim Drake jets around the world
to help ISAF develop a new Olympic windsurfing class. A
great step forward for windsurfing enthusiasts, and a
political minefield for Jim. Here we have a man, the
inventor of our sport, spending his time ensuring that
windsurfing reaches its true potential. Jim is interested in
any challenge, as he believes that virtually anything is
possible with the right dedication.
He is still holds the world speed record for an aircraft
since 1967, and knowing how far technology has
advanced since then, we can only guess how far ahead
Jim was of his time, and how far ahead he is of the
present time. Normally Jim will conclude a conversation
reassuring us that his “predictions” normally will be quite
easy to spot in 30 years and then I see how disappointed
he is for the world that has to wait so long to conclude.
We wish we all could open our eyes and get a glimpse of
what Jim sees next.
Eric Girard
Eric Girard is breaking news, making
documentaries sailing with whales in New
Foundland, creating windsurfing events in
Canada, a role model for Oreal products,
and helping windsurfing make headlines
around the world.
Eric is an ambassador for both Windsurfing
and Starboard, making people around the
world see windsurfing from new angles and
locations.

Tor Bakke
Tor Bakke has many stories to tell after
travelling the windsurfers life. Every year we
get to learn more about the background of the
first European Vice Champion of windsurfing.
The time as a windsurfing instructor in the
Bahamas, his creation of the production
Strapper sailboards with legendary Jason
Polakow, and the crucial Norwegian
Championships in 1981 where he and Svein
were battling for the title until the last upwind.
Marketing manager at Cobra int. and owner of
his private nightclub at age 18.
Tor is heading Starboard web side of things,
and more.
Trent Pedersen
Joe Dumrongvivat
Trent Pedersen holds the title Marketing
Manager. The truth is that Trent does not
get enough time to look at all marketing
aspects. He has been thrown into a quickly
expanding organization, which needs his
multitude of skills at all levels, and there
isn’t any corporate or windsurfing discipline
that Trent would not be able to handle.
Besides being a skilled sailmaker and party
animal, he is the man that helps Starboard
make all the right decisions.
Joe Dumrongvivat, the youngest top manager in
the windsurfing industry, has not only guided
Starboard to become the worlds best selling brand.
He insures that Starboard products are available on
time in 75 different countries through the very best
channels. He has with his long term sales planning
secured that the second hand value of Starboard
remains the highest in the market. Joe was the first
man to Join Starboard, and he is the last man to
leave the office every day.
Ian Fox
Ian Fox has one particular mission this season,
get his one year old son Carter windsurfing.
Carter already came to our photo shoot where
Ian successfully commanded some 40 crew for
10 long days, ensuring that 4 camera men, the
sun, the wind, helicopters and our pro team
were ready for action at the right time. Ian lives
to go fast, his board of choice is the Sonic 100,
he’s involved in testing S-type and Carve
prototypes, and will provide the most in depth
feedback possible on equipment in our forum
pages.
Kjell Vagle
Kjell Vagle, a man with more enthusiasm for
windsurfing than anyone we know. This “nut head”
created a windsurfing club at the artic circle with
close to 300 members. Today he is in charge of
the windsurfing-academy program, our
sponsorship alliance project and other new trend
setting avenues. Kjell was Svein’s sports doctor
back in the 84 Olympic’s in LA.
Scott McKercher
Scott Mckercher does not like to loose and
looking back he probably has won the most in his
career. He won the respect of all the other PWA
sailors, people that he accidentally met on the
beach and his friends. He won the love of a
beautiful blond woman and keeps helping to
create winning board designs .He would also like
to win a port tack down the line wave sailing
event, but when he does, that will be quite
unsubstantial when its all added up.

Remi Vila’s motivation is clear.
We must create brilliant designs for the 08
Olympics, as the sport of windsurfing has
so much to gain with a class where sailors
are using equipment they enjoy racing. It’s
a difficult task, developing a board that
sails well in light wind, planes early and is
plenty of fun in high winds. Remi divides
his time between traveling the world to help
Jim Drake convincing ISAF that a change
must happen. Developing and testing
boards with Starboard, and taking care of
his own successful business and beautiful
wife in Martinique.
Michael Nakvachara suffered an injury
while winning a ice hockey game in Bangkok
last year, but is now back in action. He is
everywhere doing everything. For Starboard
he supports the test program and helps
manage the Starboard test facility at Naklua
Bay, Thailand. Michael is an engineer with an
eye for the very best shapes, and he helps us
select and refine, over and over again.
Keith Baxter Born and raised in Hawaii, he became
a member of the Kaneohe Yacht club where he
learned to sail. He brought the first Hobie Cats to
Hawaii, and soon became state champion.
He got himself the original windsurfer with serial
nr:326, seeing that a new sport was about to
happen. He started Fleetwood and produced the
best mast tracks and booms in the business. Later
he started HPL, known as the boom manufacturer
with 10 out of the world’s top 10 ten sailors on the
customer list.
Keith and his wife Karen later initiated the worlds
first Kiteboarding accessory company, Airush.
Today he is our inspiration for the new Prokids
movement and with his kids Connor and Ashley, he
travels the world promoting kids windsurfing.
As a good friend on and off the water, Keith always
shares his ideas and we are happy to follow him on
new adventures.
Ellen Faller and Roger Jackson
Ellen Faller and Roger Jackson, both US
windsurfers of the year. Spend their years
growing the sport of windsurfing. They travel
to events all around the US, setting up
windsurfing clinics and demos as the go.

Starboard’s core research, design and development team are all too aware that innovation and quality is a whole greater than the sum
of its parts. Paying attention to details, listening intently and thinking two steps ahead, is what drives the team forwards.
Listening to schools, Starboard developed the new Clipperbox system, a revolutionary retractable centre-fin system, so simple and
functional by design. Sand-proof, durable and simply so smooth to use. Paying attention to test riders, a new dual-layer tread pattern was
designed for 2005 board pads. With a uni-directional ‘Fish Scale’ grooving, these pads offer traction and grip in precisely the right
direction, whilst allowing the foot to smoothly slip out when exiting from the straps. With concerns about safety, Starboard introduced the
Safety Rubber Washer, a small device that protects flesh from protruding fin bolts – a small and simple detail yes, but a critical one none
the less. Racers wanted lighter straps and did not mind compromising size-adjustment practicality – so a Racestrap that weighs a mere
90g with minimal water absorption was developed and introduced as standard on all Formula and Sonic boards.

The greatest detail of all, the shape, is the ultimate focus of attention. Hundreds of concepts are tested and refined each season, day in
and day out, all year round; involving dozens of core designers of the most experienced caliber and verified by professional test riders from
around the world, each board and its details strive to define performance, innovation and quality.
Per Andersson. A Swede bred in the waves of Western Australia, Per shapes, tests and specializes in board construction, shape and quality. A pure perfectionist by
nature, Per has grown to become a key figure in the workshop within a short space of time. Driven by sheer passion, he draws sincere respect from those of us
around him.
Koltd Black. The artist who’s talent designs the artwork that goes on the boards. Mixing windsurfing inspiration with tattoos, comics, and local beer, he has both a
unique graphic and working style. A maverick by nature, a clown around the office, Koltd demands freedom of movement and an artistic license in his work, contained
only within the broadest of marketing guidelines. A tough guy to keep inspired and motivated.
Herr Udo Busshoff is Starboard’s product designer in charge of the development of parts and accessories; a meticulous and extremely creative character, with a
thorough understanding of functionality and design aesthetics. Mr. 'German precision'. Trained with 13 years in a performance sports retail shop and a diploma in
Product Design.
Nimit Pormchan, Gob Sewakul, Pracha Nai Win, Peak Sakarin and Pop Singnin. The leading workshop craftsmen of exceptional talent and ability. The
inseperable gang handle the making of all Starboard prototypes and masters for many years now, however big, small or challenging. Between boards, they like to
install sub-woofers in the workshop and play the music so loud it's like working in a club. The guys hang out together, wakeboard together, eat together and fom a
closely knit group of especially pure-hearted friends.

Introduced back in 1994 by Jean Louis Colmas from New Caledonia, the woodlaminated custom boards offered the lightest ever build method. Successfully
transferred to mass-production in 1995 by Jean Louis and Svein Rasmussen,
Starboard produced boards over a kilo lighter than the competition.
Dyneema is a fibre engineered to provide a remarkably high specific strength and
high impact absorption properties. The fibres are manufactured in a unique gelspinning process that align the molecule chains in a parallel orientation. The resulting
strength, elongation-to-break ratio and a sonic velocity of over 10 km/s combine to
give a sandwich laminate capable of absorbing high levels of impact energy.
Dyneema is used by the US Department of Defence in their bullet-proof vest for
ballistic energy absorption.
Often overlooked, Starboard's wood laminates also results in a board that has
been proven to deform less on the water during actual sailing: the shape under
your feet remains exactly as designed when it matters most.
"The material is very rigid, but very pleasant since we have the impression that
vibrations are absorbed without any deformations in the board" - Wind magazine France, March 2002.
Today, we are pleased and proud to see Starboard's pioneering trademark
technology used by several other good brands.
"The most impressive construction we saw was the wood veneer found on some of
the Starboards. According to our weight and ding tests, Starboard managed to
marry low-weight- as low as any board its size- with ding resistance almost
comparable to that of boards with thermoformed skins" - American Windsurfer
magazine – USA.
The 0.6mm Australian pine is exceptional as it combines properties in a unique
way: the wood is inherently unidirectional and low in resin-absorption, as well as
remarkably stiff in compression - conventional laminates such as carbon or glass
lacks this quality. Furthermore, wood exhibits high dynamic strength and
exceptional impact resistance. The relatively high thickness of the wood laminate
multiplies even further its strength, stiffness and ding resistance qualities.
The wood laminate is combined with military grade glass, carbon and an Airex
sandwich core brought from the aerospace industry. Dyneema is used to reinforce
areas of the board subjected to heavy impacts as a means to increase durability
further.
The Dyneema Reinforced Airex Model construction is a sandwich construction
described as "bullet-proof" by the US magazine Windsurfing. Using an Airex core
combined with military grade glass, D-RAM boards feature the use of wood under the
heels for impact resistance as well as Dyneema in high impact-exposed areas of the
board.

The use of innovative techniques such as foaming epoxy resin, new compression
moulding techniques and continuous fibre glass layers provides the required skin
thickness for a strong and stiff laminate, while specific reinforcements further
enhance impact and fatigue resistance in the most stressed areas. Low density
EPS core maintains the overall weight down and provides flex for added comfort
while sailing.
For N-ASA boards with a full EVA comfort deck (Start and Starsurfer), the EVA
layer replaces the ASA skin on the deck so as to bond directly with the underlying
epoxy and glass fibre layers: the durability of the EVA deck is increased and
weight is saved.
N-ASA technology opens the way for a future line-up of simple, high performance
and affordable range of equipment designed for everyday fun for all.
The new N-ASA technology combines the use of expanding resin with a 0.3mm
ASA skin for a simple yet tough and durable construction. Seamless rails and
custom finishing, with sharp release edges and soft carving rails, provide a higher
level of quality than ever achieved before with such technologies.
ASA (short for Acrylonitrile Styrene Acrylate) is a copolymer based material that
has excellent properties for outdoor applications with its remarkable resistance to
prolonged exposure to sunlight, heat, rain and common chemicals, and with its
ideal mechanical properties: the actylate elastomer has an excellent resistance to
discoloration and degradation from UV sunlight and as a laminate sheet, provides
high scratch and impact resistant protection.

The Dur-X construction label signifies the use of heel
bumpers, double sandwich, oversized, angled
reinforcements and optimized external reinforcement
patches. The Dur-X standard is used for all Acid, Evo
and Kombat models.
A The double-to-single sandwich transition line follows
a W-shaped curve to spread the load over a maximized
area. The resulting smoother transition reduces the
load-concentration ahead of the mast track increasing
durability.
B Oversized heel reinforcements cover the footstrap
inserts, reducing the load concentration that normally
occurs between the plastic inserts and the surrounding
area. The heel reinforcements are wrapping around the
rails to cover the apex of the board and are also angled
to spread loading more effectively and prevent total
breakage due to localised stress concentration.

C A unique mould-marking method guarantees the
most accurately built production sandwich boards: heel,
nose, rail and ‘half-deck’ reinforcements follow precisely
the design specification to maximize strength-to-weight
ratio and enhance durability.
In 1995, Starboard made available both Power and Tuttle boxes for our
medium and large sized boards. Following one year of feedback from
the world market, we decided to choose the original Tuttle box system,
and are happy to see that all manufacturers have currently chosen the
Tuttle design for the board models that need maximum strength to
carry the largest fins.
The Freesex range of freestyle boards called in for a
new construction that combines minimal weight with
direct impact resistance and optimum responsiveness.
Single sandwich on both deck and bottom is therefore
utilised, with a 3/4 carbon/kevlar deck reinforcement
that provides the required impact resistance and
stiffness.
Full Wood further enhances the stiffness characteristics
on Wood models, while a Stonewash finish minimises
finishing weight with a pro edition look.

Widely established amongst experienced pro and top level recreational
sailors as the best fin mount solution available, the Tuttle box gives the
highest level of structural integrity and affords the most secure fit. This
in turn ensures that the board’s performance is never compromised by
a loose fitting fin. Furthermore the 2 screws system provides extra
assurance from losing the fin while crashing into an object sailing, and
keeping the fin from moving if it slightly touches the bottom or if it is
subjected to other small impacts.

The launch of the first GO board back in 1998 started the history of
modern windsurfing. Derived from development on the first semi wide
race boards, the Go brought a new world of accessibility to
windsurfing.
The very first EVA covered full sandwich boards were hailed by the

After selecting your style, the suitable board models will be available
in a variety of sizes, defined in terms of the board’s volume. Of this
variety, the correct volume will depend on your body weight and the
wind strength at your local spot.
2. Understanding the wind strength at your local spot
How strong the wind is in your preferred windsurfing location influences the
board you need. As a rule of thumb, the lighter the wind, the higher the
floatation you will need. The stronger the wind, the smaller the board you can
have for added control and responsiveness.
3. Selecting the right board volume
The volume is the single most defining physical characteristic of a windsurf
board. Generally speaking, the higher the volume, the more stable and
forgiving a board becomes, the lower the volume, the more responsive and
more maneuverable it becomes. As a rule of thumb, lighter sailors need less
volume and heavier sailors will need more.
Lighter sailors in strong winds therefore tend to choose the lower
volume boards of a certain range, heavy sailors in lightwinds tend to
choose the larger volumes in a certain range. Lighter sailors in light
winds or heavy sailors in strong winds will often choose something in
between these two extremes.

4. Fine-tuning your selection
After selecting your style of sailing and the right volume for you, you may be
left with two or three models that are suitable. These models will differ in
terms of their shape, their construction or their fittings - and this final step will
come down to a personal choice.

Since the very introduction of the brand, Starboard Racing Development focused in redefining racing. At times the designs
have been so extreme that even our own race team were worried before taking the latest design trend for a win.
Since the Starboard birth in 1995, more national and international titles have been
secured on Starboard than any other brand.
The first Sonic slalom boards, introduced in 1996, built in the innovative Wood
technology construction from New Caledonia, weighed in at a kilo lighter than the
rest of the competition and helped securing the Speed world record for production
boards. The following year the Production Board Worlds in racing and slalom were
won on Starboards.
In 1999, Starboard and Jim Drake revolutionized racing with the Formula board,
a wide-style course racing board that brought superior upwind performance, a
lower planing threshold and a massive wind-range. In the Formula Worlds 2000,
Starboard riders secured all the top 6 spots, proving probably the single most
exciting design victory in the history of windsurfing.

Boardbag
The new Starboard bag boasts a whole new design
packed with innovative ideas and more conveniently
placed handles than ever.
Padded in thick foam, lined on one side with reflective
silver material, built for durability and featuring a new
high quality zipper, the boardbag will protect windsurf
boards during general transport and storage.
Split tail design - to
allow a finned board to be
slotted in easily.
Security Loops - when
attaching the board and
bag on to the car roofracks, slotting the roofrack straps through the
Security Loops helps
reduce the chances of
losing the board should
the straps loosen up.
Stomp pad - a great

carefully selected and gradiated to allow for

Making the sail fuller deep down and further
aft provides extra power for earlier planing
and the flatter top profile gives top end
speed and control.

The NEO offers modern day
performance yet maintains a feel and
comfort that is often forgotten in the
current markets stiff rigs. A lot of effort
has been put into delivering a sail that
has great power for it’s given size, yet
remains stable throughout it’s wind
range. You can start planning earlier
with the NEO 6.0 and 7.5 than any other
sail of the same size. The modern rig
mechanics and solid durable materials,
deliver a soft feel, with progressive
power.
Dacron and a PVC window are used in
the construction of the Neo, and with no
monofilm in this sail it allows for the
longest lifespan possible in modern day
windsurf sails. The Dacron body is
further reinforced from stretch due to
the use of load retention strips.

The new Start leash system gives beginners more
confidence and the chance to be completely
independent, by making learning alone or without
supervision safer. The leash also makes teaching
easier, since the teacher no longer has to swim after
the student everytime they drift away.
One end of the leash line may be hooked to a fixed
object on the shore or held by the supervisor, while
the other end clips on to the leash loop attachment
found at the centre on the bottom of the 2005 Start
or Starsurfer models. Because the attachment is near
the centre of the hull, the use of the leash will not
affect the way the board reacts in non-planing
conditions.

At Lake Taco, Thailand: A quickly growing team of
people from over 10 nations work together to develop
Starboard and its extensive services. The Starboard
design and development center is located next to the
central office, ensuring only a short step from idea to
prototype. Selected world wide Starboard OEM
suppliers insure that the highest quality production
boards are available on time ,creating
some 700 annual work places .
Naklua Bay, our main test location, is a one-hour ride
south of Bangkok, where another on location workshop
allows for immediate refinements of the most potential
test boards.
Most high wind gear is tested in Western Australia’s
diverse coastal conditions. Our Maui team gives final
“thumbs up” on performance after testing at their local
island spots. Starboard's goal is to “deliver what is
needed tomorrow, yesterday”.
We are supporting systems which will see the numbers
of windsurfers grow 5 times the current level by 2007.
