The Los Angeles Figure Skating Club Page Q4 2011 Volume 66, Issue 2 NEWS BULLETIN www.lafsc.org 2011—2012 Board of Directors President: Michael Cruz Vice President: Robert Davis Secretary: Joan Bys Treasurer: Gary Correa Directors: Vicki Busch Judith Campbell Dawn Eyerly Carla Golubski Jan SooHoo Coach Member: Denise Moore Junior Board President: Mandee McFerren Vice President: Rachel Trail Secretary: Kyra Josephson Treasurer: Sami McCain Directors: Helen Bender Lauren Campbell Catherine Giese Brenda Ji Patrick Leahy Sr. Advisor: Debbie Wolen Newsletter Editor: Vicki Busch Lifetime LAFSC member, Michelle Kwan, will be inducted into the U.S. Figure Skating Hall of Fame Class of 2012, at the 2012 Prudential U.S. Figure Skating Championships, January 22-29, 2012 in San Jose, California. As noted on the US Figure Skating website: “From 1995-2005, Michelle won an unprecedented 43 championships, which include five World titles, and eight consecutive and nine overall U.S. titles. She is a twotime Olympic medalist, winning silver in 1998 and bronze in 2002. In the nearly 100-year history of U.S. Figure Skating, no American man or woman has won more World titles, U.S. titles or Olympic medals. Michelle received 57 perfect 6.0 marks in major competitions, the most of any skater in history. She was awarded at least one 6.0 at her last five U.S. Championships, a record that will endure as the 6.0 system is no longer used. At the 1998 U.S. Championships, Kwan earned a record 15 perfect 6.0 marks out of a possible 18.” We here at the Los Angeles Figure Skating wish to extend our congratulations to Michelle and her family on her extraordinary achievements both on and off the ice. Michelle has been, and will continue to be, an exemplary role model for skaters and other young people around the globe for generations to come. Congratulations to Michelle and her family! In addition, to Michelle’s induction to the U.S. Figure Skating Hall of Fame, the stage is set in San Jose for the 2012 US National Figure Skating Championships. Page 2 TESSA HONG WINS SILVER MEDAL AT HER FIRST JUNIOR NATIONALS! Notes from Tessa’s mother, Miyung Hong: Tessa's first Junior Nationals experience was truly amazing. All those from the Lansing Skating Club that participated in organizing the Junior Nationals really worked hard and showed us warm East Lansing hospitality. [From the moment we arrived] until we left, we were met each morning with bright smiles and a warm welcome. The weather was very chilly and we couldn't do without a scarf and jacket once outside. On the second day of our stay, it snowed all throughout the day. Although we needed to head to the rink early in the morning, Tessa and her sister Skyla had a magical moment playing in the snow. Tessa looked so sharp wearing her LAFSC jacket and pant at all her practice ice times. What a great idea to add the embroidered logo on the pant. She really stood out from the others and Tessa was so happy and proud to be representing LAFSC. Thank you, Miyung, for sharing your photos and memories with the club! Page 6 LAFSC Young People Doing Amazing Things! NIKKI HUENERGARDT Q: What are you majoring in at USC? How did you choose your major? A: I am majoring in Fine Arts with an emphasis in Design. I chose this mostly because I have a passion for art, and have been interested in art since I was a toddler. My grandma used to give me a pad of paper and a pen at the dinner [table] to pacify me. She always kept it in her purse. I also chose it because of my shoe company and wanted to expand on my knowledge in art. Q: Tell me about USC Skate Girls. Was this your idea? What made you decide to do this? A: The USC Ice Girls is the cheer squad for the USC Ice Hockey team. You do not necessarily need to be a former or current competitive skater. We hockey skate and we perform on our figure skates. I contacted the General Manager of the hockey team my first semester at USC because I wanted to help develop a team that would be known as the “Ice Girls”. I also wanted to keep myself busy. Our first year was the 2010 - 2011 season, and we had 5 girls on the squad. This year we have expanded to 16! (Continued on page 12) HAYLEY SOO HOO Q: What are you majoring in at William and Mary College? A: I am a Marketing major and Music minor. I got interested in Marketing when I took an after-school class in high school about branding and entrepreneurship. I realized that Marketing was a great combination of strategy, competition and creativity, and I really liked that blend. I took a couple of Music and Music History classes [in my] freshman year of college, and joined the Wind Symphony, and decided to pursue the minor in Music for fun. Q: Tell me about your music. You are a flautist. How long have you been playing? Do you play other instruments? Tell me about the programs you are a part of at college. A: I have been taking flute lessons since 7th grade. I played in the band 5th through 8th grade, but didn’t have time in high school because of skating and my home school schedule. My parents and flute teacher encouraged me to try out for the Wind Symphony upon coming to William and Mary, and I made it in. (Continued on page 12) Page 7 More Ice Chips! Dennis Wickline: Adult Skater and Mad Scientist! Most skaters know Dennis Wickline for his fun and passionate skating programs, including his performance to “Good Morning Baltimore” from Hairspray. But most would never guess that when Dennis is not on the ice, he works as a Chemist and Quality Control Manager at California Baby, a manufacturer of natural and organic baby products! Dennis recently represented his company at a P.S. Arts fundraiser to help raise funds for children’s art education. Dennis used his expertise to create interesting and fun experiments like “Ooblek” and “Elephant Toothpaste” (look it up!) to both entertain the audience, and show how much fun you can have with science. “I LOVE doing this kind of stuff because it gets kids excited about science and chemistry. It shows them that it can be fun, and that chemistry is truly around us everywhere we go, “ says Dennis. Kudos to LAFSC Member, Meaghan Baitel It’s always nice to hear nice things about our members, and we recently received high praise from US Figure Skating Midwest VP, Kathy Slack for LAFSC member, Meaghan Baitel. Meaghan volunteered as a monitor at the Skate America event in Ontario, California in October, but went above and beyond her duties to help out with a last minute birthday surprise for a couple of competitors. She was asked if she knew of a local bakery so that a cake could be ordered. But Meaghan not only found a bakery, she picked up the cake and delivered it to the hotel where the competitors were staying! We’re proud of you, Meaghan!!!! Page 8 Ice Chips Cont’d! Page 12 (Continued from page 6) NIKKI HUENERGARDT CONT’D Q: You have your own company - NixShoes! Why did you decide to do this? What do you hope to accomplish? Why shoes? What are your plans for your company? A: I established NixShoes this past January in honor of a close friend of mine who passed away from Leukemia/Lymphoma at the age of 29. He was like a brother to my brother and me, and it was devastating to us when he passed. This made me so determined to help advance research in some way. That is when I came up with the idea of NixShoes. I love shoes, and so did Felipe. I thought it was the perfect thing to do. And who doesn’t love shoes? My plans are to get the first production of shoes underway. They are in production and hopefully, they will be released before the Christmas chaos. I want to one day open up a store , and for the whole world to know about them. I have so many plans in store that I cannot release, but I am super excited about! Q: What do you want to do when you graduate from college? A: After I graduate, I definitely want to try out for Disney on Ice and/or a cruise line ice show. I want to expand my company, and build it up to a well-known brand name! (Continued from page 6) HAYLEY SOO HOO CONT’D Since then, the group has become my college family, and I am President this year. I also made the newly-formed Chamber Winds group this year. I don’t play any other instruments, but I have learned a ton about music history, theory and technique just by talking to other musicians, playing with ensembles, and taking my Music minor classes. Outside of the Wind Symphony, I’m in my school’s chapter of Delta Omicron (a co-ed honors music fraternity) and the Student Marketing Association. Q: Are you still skating while you’re at school? A: The nearest rink is about 25 miles away, and since I don’t have a car I don’t get to skate much. However, I usually get a group of friends together 1 - 2 times a semester and go to a Friday night public. Some of them are great students . I taught my friend and his girlfriend how to do crossovers in the Kilian hold the other day. Q: What do you want to do when you graduate from college? Will you be coming back to California? Or staying in Virginia? A: I am currently looking for jobs in marketing, either at an agency or in-house, preferably for an arts organization or non-profit. I really like Virginia and [Washington] DC , so I’m thinking about staying out here (Virginia). But the possibility of coming to California is there as well. Q: You’re one of the original members of LAIT, and were captain for awhile. Do you miss that? What do you miss about it? A: It has been nice to have my Friday nights free since leaving LAIT, but I do miss the team. (Continued on page 13) Page 13 (Continued from page 12) HAYLEY SOO HOO CONT’D It was great experience and a great part of my skating life. I learned so much from it that has helped me all throughout high school and college. I enjoy watching LAIT perform when I am home, and helping out at the annual benefit show. I miss being surrounded by a huge group of talented, funny and imaginative skaters all the time, but it’s been great to see the group develop and be recognized for everything it’s done for Theater on Ice as a sport. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Ken Taylor of his many generous years of volunteering on behalf of our club. Ken has been a member of the Board, has served as President of the club, and has judged and officiated at many of our competitions, and has always been willing to step forward when a need arose. Most recently Ken served as our Test Chair, and we would like to thank him for his fine efforts in ensuring our skaters had the opportunity to test, and handling with great aplomb the very difficult task of scheduling and administering the roster of tests we have each month. Recently, Ken has decided to step down from this position and Carla Golubski (herself also a longtime member of the Board of Directors, former club President and official on behalf of the club) has graciously assumed the position of Test Chair. We are very grateful for both Ken and Carla’s willingness to serve, and wish to publicly acknowledge our thanks on behalf of all club members. Thank you Ken and thank you Carla!
