The Key Words: Dean’s Office
fot. fotolia.com
The Dean’s Office – this is a place
which deals with most of your
problems: collecting your student
IDs and student books, student
status confirming certificates, semester credits and applications for
a dean’s leave. However, you do not
always have to visit the dean’s office to solve your problems. Some
of the services are available online: ”CUE’s Virtual Dean’s Office”
at www.uek.krakow.pl/wd
The Virtual Dean’s Office in Practice
The WWW page provides information on the course of studies (time-table, obligatory subjects in
a given semester, grades, credits, examinations, fees, scholarships, student social issues, individual virtual bank account numbers, applications and general information).
The Virtual Dean’s Office can be accessed from any computer. Enter University home page www.
uek.krakow.pl, click on ”Wirtualny Dziekanat” or use a direct connection: www.uek.krakow.pl/wd
To get access to the Virtual Dean’s Office, you need to log in to the system.
Identifier/log-in: a unique album number or your ID (passport) number.
Password: any sequence of signs used after the first log-in.
Students who log in to the system for the first time should use the PESEL number
as an initial password, or – in the case of foreign students – their date of birth supplemented with 5 zeros as follows: year/month/day/00000, e.g. a person born on 12
March 1991: 91031200000; after logging in the system will request you to change your
password. You may change your password at any time when using the system.
Should you lose your password, contact your dean’s office which, on the basis of
your (student) ID, will retrieve your initial password (PESEL). It will enable you to log in
to the system on the following day.

The Main Building, second floor,
rooms: 214-218.
The Section deals with the following issues:
The Social Affairs Section deals with
social aid for students and PhD students, financed from the Polish central budget. Aid programmes are offered to Polish and foreign citizens
who attend programmes in compliance with the terms and conditions
for Polish citizens and within the
framework of Polish scholarships
granted through BUWiWM (Bureau
for Academic Recognition and International Exchange) as well as health
insurance policies.
Awarding social aid grants and the Rector’s grants for best students,
Emergency funds may be applied for in crisis situations,
Students with disabilities may apply for special grants,
Granting accommodation in student houses. Information on student accommodation for 1st
year admittees can be obtained from the Teaching Department or a recruiting company,
Information on the possible refunds of health insurance premiums paid on behalf of the National Health Fund for students whose background has been confirmed by a Polish consul, and
- in some special cases - for the citizens of Switzerland, EU or EFTA member states,
Payments of grants awarded by the Polish Party as well as Foreign Parties. Polish Party grants
awarded for the subsequent year of studies.
Eligibility for particular grants is regulated by the Higher Education Act.
Grants
The manner of awarding grants for foreign students attending regular programmes at the University
is regulated by Art. 43 of the Higher Education Act.
The grants for which you are eligible depend on the conditions of your admission as well as the
conditions of attending your current programme.
Students who attend programmes in compliance with the conditions set forth for Polish citizens
include those specified in Section 2, Art. 43:
1) foreigners who have been granted residency rights
2) foreigners who have been granted refugee status in Poland
3) foreigners who enjoy temporary protection in the Polish territory
4)family members of migrating employees who are EU, Swiss or EFTA citizens, if they live in the
Polish territory
5)foreigners who have been granted European Community long-term residency rights in the territory of the Republic of Poland
6)foreigners who have been granted supplementary protection rights in the Polish territory

7)EU and EFTA citizens – the Parties to the Agreement on the European Economic Area, Switzerland and their family members who
enjoy permanent residency rights
8)foreigners who have been granted limited residency rights in the
Polish territory, pursuant to Art. 53, section 1, points 7, 13 and 14 of
the Foreigners Act of 13 June 2003
The above mentioned persons are entitled to attend university programmes in compliance with the conditions set forth for Polish citizens
and, consequently, apply for social grants, special disability grants, the
Rector’s best student grants, the Ministry’s achievement grants as well as
emergency grants.
The exception are EU, Swiss or EFTA citizens (point no. 7) who possess
sufficient financial resources to cover their living expenses while attending
University programmes are subject to the conditions set forth for Polish
citizens, but they may apply solely for the Rector’s grants for best students.
Student Houses
The University has a limited number of places in student houses – not
all the applicants will be granted accommodation. The allocation of places
is subject to 5 criteria/categories:
1.CUE’s student exchange agreements with other Polish universities,
2.CUE’s multilateral cooperation agreements with overseas universities,
3.The Rector’s discretionary decisions with regard to fee-paying students and those admitted through recruitment agencies,
4.The Minister’s decisions with regard to students admitted through
the Bureau for Academic Recognition and International Exchange.
5.Students who are in financial distress as well as Polish and foreign
students who attend programmes in compliance with the conditions set forth for Polish citizens.
Foreigners, holders of the valid Cards of the Pole, admitted in compliance with the conditions for Polish citizens, may apply for social grants, special grants for persons with disabilities, Rector’s and Minister’s grants as well
as emergency grants.
They may also attend programmes according to different principles
than those for Polish citizens – as foreigners who pay a fee for tuition, as
winners of Polish scholarships, pursuant to international agreements, the
rector’s or minister’s decisions, without tuition payments and scholarship
benefits, pursuant to inter-university agreements, etc. In such cases eligibility for grants is individually determined by BUWiWM, a foreign party or
relevant agreements.
Remember that your eligibility for grants depends on your admission
and current study conditions of your programme.
How to apply for a grant?
Step 1:
applications should be filed via internet with the Virtual Dean’s Office.
Social grants and for students with disabilities by 25 September
Rector’s grants by 25 October

The Foreign Language
Institute
The Institute offers foreign language courses. It is equipped with modern
multi-media teaching aids and a computer-aided language laboratory; it
offers traditional courses along with e-learning programmes – apart from
classes conducted by teachers, students have access to Moodle e-learning
platform programmes.
How to sign up for foreign
language classes?
To sign up for foreign language classes you need to sit
a placement test. The test is available from 6 to 31 August –
log in to the Virtual Dean’s Office, link SJO.
You may access a test for a given language only once; when
you interrupt taking a test, access to it at a later date will
be denied.
CHOICE OF LANGUAGES:
CUE Bachelor’s students attend courses of two foreign languages. At least one
of them is a continuation of a foreign language course offered in secondary schools
(for International Business and Corporate Finance and Accounting programmes the
first obligatory language is English). CUE Master’s students attend courses of one
foreign language (for International Business programme the obligatory language is
English). The Institute’s offering includes the following languages: English, German,
Russian, Italian, French, Mandarin and Spanish at all levels: A1, A2, B1, B2 and C1.
Foreign students, studying on English programmes who don’t speak Polish, are
advised to choose the second language (German, French, Russian, Spanish, Italian,
Mandarin) on more advanced level. The very basic language courses may be conducted in Polish.
They may also choose Polish language classes offered by IPO, which are fully
conducted in English. Interested students are asked to fill in the form and contact
IPO.
The foreign language programme is defined in the plan of studies.
First cycle (BA) study programmes: two foreign languages in the course of 4
semesters (finished with a standardised examination).
Second cycle (MA) programmes: one foreign language in the course of two semesters.
These are general rules and there may be some exceptions depending on a
study programme.
In the Foreign Language Institute students may acquire additional language
qualifications and be awarded certificates, such as LCCI, TELC and diplomas in business French. The Foreign Language Institute offers courses which prepare candidates to sit exams at particular levels.
 T he first/continued language which you have learnt
before and for which you are obliged to take a test; students majoring in Applied Informatics, Management,
Economic Analytics, Public Economy and Administration, Accounting and Controlling, European Studies,
Tourism and International Relations must choose English /automatically displayed/.
 The second language – if you choose a language that
you have learnt before, you must take a placement test;
when you choose a new language (that you have not
learnt before), you do not need to take a placement
test – just tick level A1.
 I t is necessary to mark all fields; you confirm your
choice by pressing ‘start’, then you proceed to a test in
your first language
 You take a test until relevant questions are displayed
(it is related to moving to the next higher level). You
answer questions by choosing one of the four options
through clicking on the content of the answer (the
green colour is displayed).
 Confirmation of answers – press ‘odpowiadam’/I answer.
 Before taking a test in another language the message is
displayed: ‘test pierwszego języka został zakończony’/
test in the first language is completed/.

How to use University computer-aided labs and get WiFi access?
Practical hints
 W
hen you take an exam, especially an oral one, it is advisable to be dressed in a formal way – just like for a job
interview. Examiners might consider casual wear to be
inappropriate.
The computer-aided laboratories are reserved for the exclusive use of
staff and students – during computer science classes or individually. Individual work is possible on the week days (Mon - Fri) from 8:00 to 20:00, outside the periods booked for classes. The individual work schedule is available on the information board at the IT Centre and the University home
page.
Students who wish to use the laboratories should present their student
ID or student book.
 I t is customary to address teachers, professors and University executives “professor”, “doctor” (sir, madam), “rector”, etc. It is not appropriate to call your teachers by
their first name.
It is possible to get WiFi access in the campus territory. It is necessary to
fill out the user’s card to be collected at the entrance to the laboratories of
the IT Centre from the operator on duty (building A, room 06) or from the
IT Centre’s web site. The form should be submitted to room 03 in person;
students should present their IDs or student books with enrollment for the
current semester.
 W
e encourage you to take advantage of the courses offered by the Foreign Language Institute which can give
you a specific foreign language qualification (www.sjo.
uek.krakow.pl)
How to sign up for PE classes?
You can sign up for a selected sport during your first PE class at
the start of the academic year. The offering of the Sports Institute
and the schedule of classes should be checked at the beginning of
the academic year in the Sports Building. It is advisable to choose
several different classes to get a feel for what is the best choice for
you. Do it during the first week of classes – the number of places may
be limited.
