Traveling Pantry
Gets Additional
Community Help
Two more local groups provided
support for the Traveling Pantry
(formerly The Food Truck) in
September. The Thomases
Family Endowment of the
Youngstown Area Jewish
Federation awarded the
program a $2,500 grant and the
Warren Kiwanis Club gave a
$1,000 gift specifically for the
purchase of food.
Currently, the Traveling Pantry
is providing 110 senior citizens
of Trumbull County with
foodstuffs sufficient for 14 days
every two weeks. Deliveries go
out Monday through
Wednesday every week.
There are still slots available for
seniors (60+) who are unable to
get to the store on their own
and/or lack the funds to
maintain a nutritious diet.
Applications are available at all
SCOPE Senior Centers or call
330-399-8846 and one will be
mailed to you.

DIRECTORS MESSAGE
A Special Thank You
When Mildred Kirchner, 87, passed away on April 8, 2015, her
family requested that material contributions in her memory
Ralph Smith
be directed to SCOPE. Well into the summer, contributions
for her memorial fund continued to arrive. The total given by those who
remembered Mildred’s kindness and enjoyed her friendship grew to nine
hundred and ten dollars ($910).
Available detailed records at SCOPE on membership and program participation only go back to 2005, but they show Mildred was already using
the Warren SCOPE program back then. She first appears participating in
our then transportation program to attend weekly bingo games and the
occasional speaker’s program. With the coming of Café SCOPE in 2013,
she added lunch on bingo days. She had a regular circle of friends who
shared these afternoons with her. They have warm memories of Mildred’s
easy laughter and genuine concern for those around her. She is genuinely
missed.
That concern for others was borne out by the list of her activities
that appeared in the Tribune Chronicle in an article following her death:
“Mildred was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish in Niles,
was a festival volunteer, member of the Our Lady of Mount Carmel Society, Warren SCOPE, gave communion to the sick and was a volunteer at
Trumbull Memorial Hospital for more than 20 years as a Pink Lady working
in the pediatric unit and then the gift shop. She…received the Community
Spirit Recognition Award from the Pearlman Foundation.”
Mildred’s husband, Donald, passed away in 1978, but she is survived by
her son and three daughters, nine grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and three more on the way.
SCOPE extends its most sincere appreciation to this family for honoring their mother’s life with this memoriam.
The Donors:

VETERANS’ PINNING CEREMONY
During the month of
November at the Warren SCOPE
center two veteran events were
featured.
First, was the pinning
ceremony of SCOPE members on
the day before Veteran Day 2015
in the Warren Center Café. A
wonderful lunch was provided by
Anna Keck of Home Instead
Senior Care and then served by
the nursing students of Kent
State University. SCOPE’s parent
organization Family and
Community Services provided the
cake and patriotic decorations.
The Church of Warren also
provided food and musical
entertainment this year to
support our veterans.
Crossroads Hospice
conducted the ceremonies thanks
to the efforts of Christine Orr
the CRH Chaplain, Amy Hileman
STNA, Patrick Cline RN, and Dan
DelliQuardi with CRH provider
relations. Youngstown State
University’s ROTC was on hand to
pin the veterans with their
branch of service lapel logo.
Elisabeth Diehl and James Peace
both students at Champion High
School played TAPS to remember
our fallen veterans.
On Veterans Day, the
American Legion Clarence Hyde

the large multi-purpose room at the Warren SCOPE Center. Led by
post Commander Ernie Paugh, who makes the soup each year, and by
his legion member’s work, a nice lunch was had by all. Legion member
Vera Murphy handled the table decorations. The annual Warren
Veteran’s Day parade had many military units and high school bands
walking the route around the county courthouse. Ernie even drove his
own World War II Jeep in the parade with Warren SCOPE’s 97 year
old volunteer Madeline Fonce riding in the back. Both events as well as
those which occurred at the other SCOPE centers were fine tributes
to those who have served our nation.
SENIOR CENTERS
EMPOWER OLDER ADULTS
“Throughout our lives, it’s important that we stay active, engage
with our community, and continue to
learn,” said James Firman, NCOA
President and CEO. “Senior centers
offer a variety of innovative opportunities for older Americans to remain vital, empowered, active participants in their lives and their
communities.”
Research shows that older
adults who participate in senior center programs can learn to manage
and delay the onset of chronic disease and experience measurable improvements in their physical, social,
spiritual, emotional, mental, and economic well-being.

RETIREMENT
Question:
What type of information will I need to provide if I'd like to apply online for Social Security retirement benefits?
Answer:
Whether you apply for retirement benefits online, by phone or in
an office, we suggest that you have the following information at
hand when you do it--it will make completing the application easier
for you.
* Your birth date, place of birth, and Social Security number;
* Your bank account number and your bank's routing number, for
direct deposit;
* The amount of money you earned last year and this year. If you
are applying for benefits in the months of September through December, you may also need to provide an estimate of what you expect to earn next year if you plan to continue working;
* The name and address of your employer(s) for this year and last
year;
* The beginning and ending dates of any active military service you
had prior to 1968; and
* The name, Social Security number and date of birth of your current and any former spouses.
Depending on your situation, you may need to provide additional
documentation with your application. We'll give you instructions on
how to mail or bring it to us. To get started, visit our Retirement
Planner at www.SocialSecurity.gov/retire2.
Question:
I am 65 and my wife is 62 and receiving spouse's benefits. When
will she qualify for Medicare benefits?
Answer:
Most people must wait until age 65 to qualify for Medicare benefits. Some people can get Medicare at any age, including those who:
* Have been getting Social Security disability benefits for 24
months or more;
* Have kidney failure and require dialysis;
* Have had a kidney transplant; or
* Receive disability benefits because they suffer from amyotrophic
lateral sclerosis (also known as Lou Gehrig's disease).
You can apply online for Medicare at www.SocialSecurity.gov/

Girls Scouts pack food in boxes for senior citizens. Story
on page 5.
Home Instead Senior Care offices held their
annual “Be a Santa to a Senior” program to provide
gifts and companionship for lonely and isolated
seniors. Many retail locations featured Christmas
trees with senior’s first names and their gift requests. Program partners and volunteers wrapped
and coordinated with Warren SCOPE Center manager Sister Dorothy Kundracik for deliveries
through the SCOPE’s Travelling Pantry food truck.
Thank you to Dottie Johntony, general manager of
the local Home Instead Senior Care office, her staff and
volunteers for supporting SCOPE.
