Christmas in July 6 Action Steps to Take NOW! “I didn’t think it could happen to me.” Have you been a victim of identity theft? While you often hear how to prevent identity crimes, if it DOES happen to you, here are the major steps you should take to help stop continued theft and hopefully prevent it in the future. 1. Place an Initial Fraud Alert with the three credit reporting agencies: Equifax 800-525-6285, Experian 888-397-3742, and TransUnion 800-680-7289. Consider requesting a credit freeze. 2. Obtain a new drivers license, but request a new number. Don’t just get your old license reissued with the same number. 3. Contact your credit card debtors and let them know what has happened so they can cancel your card and reissue a new card. 4. Contact your financial institution (where you have your checking account and debit card) to notify them. 5. File a police report about the identity theft, and get a copy of the police report and the report number. 6. Document the situation to the best of your knowledge including what happened, when you noticed it, what you did. It’s not too late to open a Christmas Club to have a little cash for the holidays! With as little as $10 or $20 per pay period, your Christmas Club can add up! Call today to open yours! Visit www.identitytheft.gov for the most up-to-date information. Truly FREE Credit Reports Several advertisers claim to offer “free” credit reports. The only legitimate website authorized to provide a free credit report is www.AnnualCreditReport.com, created by Equifax, Experian and TransUnion, the three nationwide credit scoring agencies. The site is ad-free, won’t re-direct you elsewhere and won’t send you a request for personal information. You’re entitled to one free credit report a year from each of the three credit reporting agencies listed above. If you questions about getting your free credit report online, please call us!
