— HAMTRAMCK'S NEWSPAPER OF RECORD —
Quick Hits
Voters, get ready.
Next Tuesday, Nov. 5, is
the big day and Hamtramck needs you to report
for your civic duty.
Tuesday is the General
Election, and in Hamtramck voters will decide
on who will be mayor and
who will fill four seats on
city council.
In the past, voter turnout
has been dreadfully low
when there are only city
elected positions to fill.
That’s a shame because
there is so much at stake
in our elections.
Hamtramck is currently
under the guidance of a
state-appointed
emergency manager, but she is
leaving at the end of June.
That means the city will return to local control, and
it’s important we elect the
right people to keep the
city afloat.

Fear not, garden lovers.
The Hamtown Farms will
not be turned into a parking
lot.
The community farm project came under threat this
week
when
Kowalski
Sausage Co. offered to buy
the five city-owned lots that
comprise the gardens for
$3,000.
An immediate outcry of
protest and outrage from
farm supporters went out
over the social media network and was picked up by
television news stations.
Farm organizer Mike Davis
urged supporters to call
Hamtramck Emergency Manager Cathy Square.
The calls came in, said
Square, and by Wednesday
the deal was dead.
“This was too much aggravation,” Square told The Review about the number of

Blighted, burnt-out houses
dot the landscape of the
neighborhoods
in
Hamtramck.
In addition to being dangerous eyesores, just one or two
of these houses can lower
the value of other well-kept
homes on the street. When a
burnt-out house is located
near a school or playground,
diligence is required on the
part of neighbors on the entire block.
When funding does become
available, it is always a relief
to have these homes demolished.
Although demolition is a
quick fix to removing a ramshackle home, there is another solution: Taking apart
the home board by board,

Wayne County is expanding special house demo program
door by door, and brick by
brick. Although deconstructing a house takes slightly
longer (two people and one
day to demolish a house, and
six people and 10 days to deconstruct a house), the benefits reaped can be seen long
after the home is removed.
This past Wednesday, representatives from the Wayne
County Neighborhood Stabilization Program 3 Deconstruction Pilot Program were
on hand at a house slated for
deconstruction at 11434
Nagel, to explain why the
county is using federal funds
to promote the deconstruction of 50 blighted houses in
Hamtramck, as well as
houses in Highland Park,
Ecorse, River Rouge and
Inkster.
“Recovering and reusing
these valuable materials
makes sense,” said County
Executive Robert Ficano. “The

A few years ago, Hamtramck deconstructed four
houses as part of the funding
received from a similar program, the federal Neighborhood Stabilization Program
(NSP2) grant.
The new approach of deconstruction was spearheaded by
then Economic Development
Director Jason Freidmann.
What was discovered during
this earlier phase of deconstruction was that the construction debris that ends up
in a landfill after demolition is
much more valuable if a home
is dismantled piece by piece
and re-used.
During Hamtramck’s deconstruction program, a blighted
two-story colonial house at
2328 Carpenter was taken
apart. According to a cost
analysis by Reclaim Detroit, a
local deconstruction company,
the lumber alone yielded over
$47,000.
This is the retail value of
heart pine lumber, a highgrade timber that was harvested over 100 years ago.
The trees that produced heart
pine were old-growth trees
that had aged long enough to
produce rock solid “heart”
wood.
“Pine is harvested much
earlier nowadays, and never
has the chance to grow into
the kinds of trees that produce the good timber. Two-byfours aren’t even two-by-fours
anymore,” said Peter Fuciarelli, President of Oak Hills
Construction.
“Most of Hamtramck has
got some heart pine lumber -nice warm amber.”

In addition to deconstructing, Oak Hills is also conhomes
in
structing
Hamtramck.
Besides the heart pine lumber, many other items in the
houses have intrinsic value as
well: The bricks, cedar siding,
wood flooring, interior trim,
windows and doors, hardware,
columns, and miscellanious
metal brought the total retail
value of the deconstructed
home at 2328 Carpenter to
over $100,000.
That figure represents the
gross profit, and doesn’t take
into account the cost of labor
and storage of the wood,
which puts a substantial dent
into the net profit.
However, the first four
houses were only the beginning phase. As more houses
are deconstructed costs will
be minimized, and the profits
will stabilize. As replicating
the deconstruction process
becomes more streamlined,
the process of deconstruction
will eventually cost less.
There have been some local
high profile uses of the reclaimed wood, especially in
tony Midtown. The checkout
counter bases in Whole Foods
Detroit, and the ceilings,
floors, counter and tabletops
of Great Lakes Coffee at
Woodward and Alexadrine are
vintage Hamtramck wood.
Socra Tea in the 71 Garfield
Building also sports some of
our town’s housing stock.
“There is so much character
in this wood -- dark and rustic.
I’ve been seeing it in more
trendy furniture and shelving,”
said Kathy Angerer, Hamtramck Director of Economic
Development.
Reclaim Detroit deconstructs homes, and according
to their website, that although
the field of deconstruction is
still emerging, “the national
demand for reclaimed wood is
strong and growing.” However, when a regional market
for the lumber and bricks isn’t
readily available, or storage
becomes a cost issue, the
materials can alternatively be
dedicated to a local nonprofit.
A labor cost-comparison of
demolition versus deconstructed shows that although
demolition can be a few thousand dollars cheaper, demolition teams are typically not
local.
A major part of the Wayne
County NSP3 Deconstruction
Pilot Program involves training
local people in the skill-sets
necessary to deconstruct a
home through the Detroit
Green Works Solutions green
jobs training program.
By training local residents in
the growing field of green
building, and then employing
them at “family-sustaining
wages,” the ripples of economic impact are felt.
The Greening of Detroit’s is
also part of this round of
NSP3 funds. Their involvement is as an “end-use facilitator.” Simply put, when the
Continued from front page
deconstructed home is completely removed, the Greening
of Detroit will ensure a safe,
attractive green space for the
neighborhood, and is planning
small ‘pocket’ parks, as well
as community gardening
space where the former
blighted homes once stood.
Mary Freeman, senior manager of workforce development at Southwest Solutions,
is a devoted supporter of deconstruction.
“The Wayne County Deconstruction Pilot Program has a
continual downstream of economic benefit,” she said.

Assault victim getting better, but
will likely never be the same
By Charles Sercombe
In a rare move, one of the
teens accused of severely
beating a southend resident has agreed to an early
plea deal and will testify
against his former co-defendant.
On Tuesday, a preliminary
examination was held for
De’Vante Howard, 14, of
Hamtramck, and Martell
Dewberry, 13, of Detroit.
They are accused of beating Nick Veselenak, 60 of
Danforth St., into unconsciousness for no apparent
reason on Oct. 12.
Detective Jackie Crachiola said that at Tuesday’s
exam, Howard entered a
plea of assault to do great
bodily harm less than murder. It’s rare for defendants
to enter a plea at the preliminary examination level.
Assault victim Nick Veselenak is recuperating from his injuries at a
nursing home. He is expected to survive a brutal beating committed
by two teens, but it’s likely he will suffer permanent brain damage.

carried a life sentence in
prison.

years in prison, but Crachiola said Howard has a
chance of being released
earlier if he successfully
completes a rehabilitation
program.
The plea requires Howard
to testify against Dewberry.
Veselenak, who is known
by the street name of
“Casper,” has been transferred from a hospital to a
nursing home, Crachiola
said. She said that although he has regained
consciousness and is talking, he does not recognize
people he knows.
Crachiola said it’s likely
he has suffered permanent
brain damage.
The two teens approached Veselenak at
about 11 p.m. on Oct. 12,
and started beating him
without provocation. Crachiola said they could have
been playing a so-called
game of “put them to
sleep.”
The object of the “game”
is to beat someone unconscious.
Although both teens are
being charged as adults,
they remain in custody at
the Wayne County Juvenile
Detention facility.
Veselenak was considered semi-homeless and
was known for caring for
stray cats and helping his
neighbors. He could often
be seen walking up and
down Jos. Campau, wearing earphones and occasionally rummaging through
city trash cans.
A number of police officers knew him and had
friendly exchanges with him
Police Chief Max Garbarino
said his officers took Veselenak’s assault personally.

Soup festival is just what the doctor ordered
By Charles Sercombe
A beautiful, mild fall day,
fresh soup, polkas and Polish
folk dancers.
Could you ask for anything
better?
If you were at Sunday’s St.
Florian’s Polish Soup Festival,
you could experience all that
and more. By mid-afternoon,
the parish’s main hall downstairs was packed with revelers.
The Kielbasa Kings provided the music entertainment and three dance
troupes wowed the audience
with some pretty fancy dance
steps.
Add some Polish beer to
the mix, and it was one heck
of a fall party. And if you were
a certain reporter on hand
with a raging cold, the soup
was just what the doctor ordered.
For the second year in a row, the St. Florian Polish Soup
Festival was a hit. The festival featured a polka band
and Polish folk dancers.

program called “K to Job.”
The program would help public school students in Hamtramck with improving their
basic academics in order to
make them qualify for jobs
when they graduate.
Hamtramck School Board
President
Titus
Walters
praised the program, saying it
will give students “employable
skills.” He also said that the
program will make the Hamtramck Public School District a
“destination” for other students.
Mayor Karen Majewski
agreed, saying that it has
“great potential.”
The council agreed to give
the program support. A meeting about the program will be
held on Nov. 13.
From the public, Andrea
Karpinski, who is a candidate
for city council, criticized those
elected officials who have
asked the city administration
to “look the other way” about
bills they owed to the city.
She said these elected officials, who she did not name,
manager wants to update the
city’s parking ordinance. She
asked for two councilmembers
to help with the project. Councilmembers Cathie Gordon
and Robert Zwolak volunteered to participate.

Review: Opinion Page
Our endorsements for city
council, and a reminder,
support Mayor Majewski
Last week we made our
mayoral endorsement for
next Tuesday’s General
Election.
This week, it’s the city
council’s turn.
However, there is one
council race we are not
going to endorse because
Review employee Ian Perrotta is a candidate. He
and Abu Musa are in a
runoff to see who will fill
the council seat vacated
by Cathie Gordon.
She left office to pursue
a run for mayor. Her seat
has two years left in its
term.
In the other city council
election, there are three
seats open, each a fouryear term.
Voters will be asked to
vote for no more than
three candidates.
This race is a hard one
to completely fill out, but
we think candidates TITUS
WALTERS and ANDREA
KARPINSKI are highly qualified to take office.
Walters is no stranger to
voters. He has been a
member of the Hamtramck School Board for
several years and is currently its president. Walters has a keen sense of
the needs of this community, and has generously
given his time to the
school district.
Karpinski is a lifelong
resident and former city
employee who now works
for the state.
She has insight into city
government and how it
works.
It should be noted that
the only incumbent in the
race, Mohammed Hassan,
has contributed little to
the council and has failed
to live up to an agreement
with the city to settle a
water bill.
The city finally had
enough and recently
turned off his water service.
Is this the kind of public
servant we want repreHamtramck?
senting
Somebody who can’t pay
his bills or keep his end of
a promise?
In the mayoral race, just
as a reminder, we support
the re-election of Mayor
KAREN MAJEWSKI.
She is clearly head and
shoulders above her opponent, Abdul Algazali, who
is himself a property tax
delinquent.
No matter what, we urge
voters to go to the polls
next Tuesday, Nov. 5, because in Hamtramck every
vote truly counts.
abruptly walked away without offering an explanation.
Not coincidentally, those
candidates are part of a
slate for the Nov. 5 General Election. Or are they?
Despite a flyer being distributed around town,
Musa says he’s not part
of any slate.
We don’t know what’s
going on here but none of
it adds up.
Their snubbing of the
forum leaves a lot of
unanswered questions:
Do they have something
to hide? Did they fear
being questioned? Or are
they so arrogant that they
don’t believe they have to
answer to anyone and that
they have the election
locked up?
It’s probably pointless to
speculate, but it does
make one wonder that if
they are elected, is this
how they will govern? Will
they make decisions behind closed doors?
The slate’s absence
also causes a division in
the community. It’s no secret that their slate is
composed mainly of
Bangladeshi-American
community members (Algazali and Almasmari are
Yemeni-American). By not
attending the forum, this
cultural division only deepens and creates needless
anxiety.
What’s even more baffling is that in the past
Bangladeshi-American
candidates, as well as Algazali, have attended similar
events
without
incident.
For Algazali, this is the
second candidate forum
he has not attended this
election season.
This action is not something legitimate civic leaders engage in, nor should
it be tolerated by voters.

It has come to my attention
that there is a very intense atmosphere over our town concerning the Muslim call to
prayer, also known as Adhan.
Some complain questioning
the necessity of it, and some
just wish that it wouldn't be
too loud. I've been living in
Hamtramck for 15 years now.
Certainly not the longest living
resident for sure, but I've been
around to see a lot of
changes.
Even if you were born in the
21st century (year 2000 and
later) and look closely enough,
you can still see the remnants
of what Hamtramck used to
be. As houses got cheaper in
the suburbs, many of Hamtramck's long-time European
residents (predominantly Polish) decided that it was time to
move, resulting in a huge influx of different cultures being
noticed.
As the painted murals at the
People's Community Center
shows the story itself,
Bangladeshi, Yemeni, Bosnian
-- and many other ethnicities -came to join the community
and live the American way during the late 1900s.
As more of the Poles moved
away, the local Catholic
churches began to lose support -- and many to this day
have been closed down by the
Archdiocese of Detroit. As immigrants came along, they
needed places to worship, and
so mosques sprouted across
the city and nearby Detroit to
serve the residents.
Some non-Muslims have
questioned why there are so
many mosques for a city that
is only 2.2 square miles. The
answer was pretty obvious. It’s
like saying that this church is
Protestant church and that
one Methodist church. All of
the mosques in Hamtramck
are Sunni, but they are from
different schools of Islam
(Hanafi is one example, which
is found in Pakistan, India,
Bangladesh, Indonesia, while
Hanbali is another, which is
found in Middle Eastern countries such as Yemen and Jordan).
In these countries, mosques
would have minarets, long
spires (towers) where traditionally, a Muezzin (a person
who recites the Adhan) would
stand and say the verses:
"God is the greatest. I bear
witness that Muhammad is
the [final] prophet of God.
Come to prayer. Come to success,” with some repetition,
very loud and with the best vocals possible.
So it's definitely not what
one freakishly conservative
woman (whose name I will not
say) once said: "Minarets
make a mosque higher than
any building surrounding it,
higher than any church, higher
than any synagogue, higher
than any Buddhist temple.
And that’s the point of the
minaret." (That statement is
completely false).
In fact, many mosques now
rely on speakers as the technology was widely available in
such countries. I remember in
2004, when congregants at
one mosque wanted to perform the call to prayer outside
through speakers in Hamtramck and had to go through
a whole election process. It
was amazing to see the outcome.
Even though the ratio between non-Muslims to Muslims was higher, the call to
prayer ballot was a success.
So not only was the permission legally granted, but even
non-Muslims helped win.
The Hamtramck Review
But there were still those
who strongly opposed the
right. Unfortunately, it seems
like that same old tension
from 2004 is back again.
Many don’t mind, some mind
just a little (as in, they want
the volume down a bit, which
is fine by me), and then there
are those who are just plain
old conservatives and hardheaded with a sticker saying
"no" slapped across their
shameless face.
Even though it's a small
group that opposes the right
that was legally given, they still
create a lot of attention towards their verbal campaign
and are unnecessarily making
it a political issue.
As for the loudness of the
call to prayer, it is still something many mosques are testing out as there are certain
volume restrictions and it
takes some time to figure out
which settings work best.
As for the necessity of it,
yes, it is necessary as Islam
practices the call to prayer before starting prayer, whether it
be done on a rooftop, in a
minaret, or in the main prayer
hall, it just has to be done.
It's part of the First Amendment … you know, where it
says freedom to religion? It
may bother some of you now
and some think of it as disrespectful and taking advantage
or abusing that freedom.
Let’s move on and assimilate.
No one is forcing anything
on others. If they are, talk with
them. Don’t make a big deal
out of it. I know I have nothing
against anyone, and if I did
have a problem, I would go to
the source to talk about it.

Mayoral candidate lacks
personal integrity
Since our city is in a financial crisis and has
been given an emergency
manager, voters in the upcoming mayoral election
need to consider the lack
of integrity of candidate
Abdul Algazali.
When voting, remember
Mr. Algazali’s broken promise to Hamtramck residents and taxpayers after
his election loss four years
ago. When he initiated the
hopeless recount after the
2009 election, he promised us that he would pay
the city back the $2,500
cost for the recount, if he
still lost the vote count.
Well, he did lose, yet he
has not paid the city a
dime of that cost four
years later.
Also, when voting, recall
the recent disclosure of Algazali’s unpaid property
taxes, which he did not pay
until one week after the primary election when the offense was made public!
Before voting, ask yourself if Hamtramck, in the
midst of a financial crisis
and the possibility of a future state takeover of our
city, can we afford to have
a mayor who lacks such financial concerns and personal integrity by breaking
his financial promises to
the people of Hamtramck
in our crucial time of need?
The lore of Hamtramck …
Roads to the past …
By Greg Kowalski
Hanging prominently in the
Hamtramck Historical Museum is a 1929 map of the
city. It isn’t the oldest one in
our collection, which goes
back to 1876, but it is intriguing.
Hamtramck’s current borders were set in 1901 when
the village of Hamtramck was
formed inside the much larger
Hamtramck Township. The
township, formed in 1798,
originally stretched from the
Detroit River to Base Line (now
Eight Mile Road) and from
Woodward Avenue through the
Grosse Pointes.
Through the 19th century,
the township was eaten up a
little at a time by the growing
city of Detroit. We don’t know
how the borders of the village
of Hamtramck were determined, but there are a few
hints. For example, Carpenter
Creek ran along the street that
now has that name. And the
property lines of some
landowners are encompassed

by Hamtramck’s outline. But
that doesn’t explain how modern Hamtramck got its odd
shape.
There’s only one tantalizing
reference in the old documents. One of the first things
the new village council did in
1901 was to authorize the
drawing of maps of the thennew village of Hamtramck.
But that’s all that was said.
At any rate, Hamtramck’s
borders haven’t changed
much since then. But the
streets sure have. Many have
undergone name changes,
some have been extended or
shortened and some have disappeared. Leuschner is still
here, but it’s now known as
Miller Street. But Newton,
which was on the far side of
town, is gone all together. It
was eliminated when the GM
Poletown plant was built in the
early 1980s.
Gallagher is one of Hamtramck’s main thoroughfares,
but until 1942, it stopped at
Evaline and picked up again
north of Caniff. On the other
hand, Poland Street ran farther west but was shortened
as the Chevrolet Gear & Axle
(later American Axle) factory
expanded. But Falcon Street
and Winfield Street have been
around forever. Don’t sound
familiar? Those are the two
streets in front of city hall. In
fact, city hall is on Falcon
Street, not Evaline, although
its address is 3401 Evaline.
Butler Street still exists on
maps but it’s hardly more than
a dirt path near the county jail
on the south side of town.
There’s a lot of lore associated with the names of Hamtramck’s streets. Some, like
Whalen and Faber, were
named after early village officials. Moran is even older. It
may have been named after
Charles Moran, a 19th century
Hamtramck Township supervisor. And the streets just north
of Carpenter,which used to be
a part of Hamtramck, are
named after Civil War generals.
But how about Taylor Street?
It’s still here right in Hamtramck and people use it
today. But you won’t find it on
a map. So where is it? Come
to the Hamtramck Historical
Museum between 11 a.m.
and 4 p.m. Saturday or Sunday and we’ll tell you.
The Hamtramck Historical
Museum is at 9525 Jos. Campau, between Poland and Norwalk Streets. It is open 11 a.m.
to 4 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays and by appointment. Call

Candidates give their last shot
The other candidates could
not be reached for comment.
The candidates are also supposedly part of a slate, but
Musa told The Review that
he was unaware of a slate
and said he supports only
himself.
Their absence certainly
made for a shorter night, but
the no-shows left a number
of residents wondering what
was up.
“I would relish learning
more about the candidates
so I can make a measured
choice for my vote. I don't
care about the personal eth-
stand and divided we fall.’
This is especially true today
in these uncertain times for
the future welfare of our fair
city.”
Nick Konke was more
blunt: “They don’t care about
the city.”
Mayor Karen Majewski,
who is seeking her third
term, started out the evening
outlining her connections
and experience with various
groups
and
municipal
Andrea Karpinski, who was
the top vote-getter in the August Primary Election, said
morale among city employees is low ever since the city
came under a financial emergency.
She said she’ll work to put
a “pop back in everybody’s
step.”
Karpinski also said she’s
not a politician, but as a former city employee and current state employee, she

the future of our community,”
said Richard Hyska on his
Facebook page.

knowing very little about the
ungracious candidates has
me feel like my vote doesn't
matter and leads me to believe that, in the least, they

elected officials.
“I’ve never missed an opportunity to raise our profile
and image of our city,”
Council candidate Titus
Walters started a theme that
ran throughout the night, declining to label himself as a
“politician.”
“I just want to serve my
community,” he told the gathering of about 40 residents
at People’s Community Services.
He also echoed the
mayor’s comment that Hamtramck’s greatest asset is its
ethnic diversity. But he acknowledged that with diversity also comes division.
“We’re all God’s children,
we’re all one people and we
have to quit this,” Walters
said.

It was originally thought
that Kowalski wanted the
lots as a “buffer zone” or to
possibly convert them into a
parking lot. Square said
Kowalski actually is interested in expanding its plant,
something that’s been in the
works for the past few years.
Kowalski at one point was
going to move its operation
out of the city, but city officials worked hard to persuade the company to stay
in Hamtramck, either by expanding the existing Holbrook building or building
new within the city limits.
Square said the company
has 11 lots near its plant
now.
Kowalski could still grab
the five lots where the garden is. Square is putting all
city-owned lots up for auction
within the next few weeks.
The lots will go to the highest bidder, meaning that the
Hamtown Farms could be
taken away.
Davis said he’s up for the
auction.
“We’ve never asked for
anything free,” he said.
He also added that the
Farms just received a considerable donation, and there is
now an online fundraising effort at www.indiegogo.com.
Once you’re on the site, look
up Hamtown Farms.
A call to Kowalski was not
returned.
To Sharon Buttry, a local
activist, she can’t imagine a
Hamtramck without the community garden.
“What kind of Hamtramck
will we have without vibrant
gardens and farms to engage neighbors (especially
youth!) and bring fresh food
to our tables?” she said on
her Facebook page. “Will
people want to live in a city
that discourages community
pride and health?”

Susan Dunn, who has been
a constant critic of elected
officials, conceded she may
have crossed a line in lashing out. Dunn admitted she
has been thrown out of two
council meetings and called
the mayor a name that “my
mother wouldn’t be proud
of.”
But she said that at the
end of the day, people can
put their differences aside
and get along.
“You can’t take it personal,” she said.
Ian Perrotta, who is one of
two candidates running for
the partial term two-year
seat on council, said he
came from Pittsburgh to
Hamtramck several years
ago after seeing a television
news report on 20/20 that
said Detroit properties could
be bought for as little as
$500.
That inspired him to purchase a dwelling in Hamtramck and work with a city
grant program to fix up the
property. But the city’s end of
the deal fell through, he said.
“It kind of crystallized to
me that you have to have
someone on city council who
knows what they’re doing,”
he said. “This isn’t a game.
It’s not a joke. … It’s all of
our lives at stake.”
As for Hamtramck’s notori-

said he hasn’t attended
many meetings because “I

that’s pointless.
