We all know what June means for me - yep, it's
time to fly another Air Race Classic! This year, my
Chapter Chair Jeneanne Visser was co-pilot in the
right seat, and we had a GREAT adventure flying
from Fredericksburg VA to Fairhope AL. It's also
special to fly the race with some great ladies from
NCS and to land at stops where our NCS 99s are
heading up the welcome reception for the racers.
Great job! Kudos to all! Thank you!

The Editors’ Corner
Hello, and welcome to your Fall 2015 Waypoint Magazine. This issue is chock full of
scholarship information and Chapter News. We Ninety-Nines have a lot to focus on, and it shows.
The International Meeting in Munich was a big boost for networking and cameraderie for women
pilots the world over, and you will see photos and narratives of that gathering from Wisconsin
Chapter, Three Rivers Chapter, Kentucky Bluegrass Chapter and Chicago Area Chapter News.
Support of aviation and aviation education for the general public is evident from every entry. Just
look at Lake Erie Chapter and All-Ohio Chapter.
The unique history of women pilots is well served by Chapter sponsorship of International Forest of
Friendship nominees, but don’t forget your intrepid chapter reporters, who, busy as they are, make
the time to pull together your many projects, adventures and dreams into a succinct couple of
pages of narrative and photographs for the Waypoint every quarter.

The Tannheim "beach" with deck chairs
...my first adventure was the opportunity to "fly the Alps"...well really kind of
near the Alps, as I opted for a glider flight. Because Germany was in the
midst of an historic heat wave with temps in the 100s, the thermals were a
little lacking, but the chance to take the controls of the glider was still great
fun. Tannheim Airfield is also home to "Tann-Kosh", which started out 20
years ago as a modest ultra-light fly-in but is now the biggest European flyin event - all held on a little grass airstrip complete with a very friendly
tower that many folks got to visit. Lots of great sessions at the conference
and a very stream-lined business meeting. Our only vote was to remove
the pesky initiation fee for new members. Hooray!
The 99s booth at AirVenture/Oshkosh was a busy place in Hangar B. Lots
of new members signed up. Lots of current members stopping by to chat
and some helping out at the booth. I hope that Chapters are staying in
touch with these new members and welcoming them to your activities.
August brought a flight to Minnesota. Our Minnesota 99s did an
awesome job staffing the 99s booth at the Anoka/Minneapolis
AOPA Regional Fly-in. It was fun flying into ANE as the traffic
began to pick up, and I got a sneak peak at our great Fall Section
digs and plans. More about that in the next issue, of course. But
you can also read all about the AOPA event in the Minnesota
Chapter report too.

It’s a pleasure to bring you all of this. And I want to
point out one more.
Indiana Dunes Chapter 99s are making a clear and
determined effort to return to their flying roots to
rebuild a struggling chapter. I will let you look at
their account of this summer’s activities (starting on
page 9) and make up your own mind how
successful they are.
Our next Waypoint will be fat with Minnesota Fall
Meeting news, but don’t let that deter you from
getting the best of your own news in to us. Maybe
we can get one article from every chapter. That
would be just plain cool.
Many thanks,
Maggie Hettinger

Amelia Earhart Memorial Scholarship Report
by Janice Welsh, NCS AE Chairman
Lynn Sykes, Northwoods Chapter, 2007 Scholarship recipient for her
Commercial pilot certificate offered her thoughts on what being awarded a
previous AE Scholarship meant to her:
“I was so honored to have been awarded the scholarship that I have tried to
pay it forward every chance I get. I have mentored several future women
pilots and those girls have joined our Northwoods Chapter and NinetyNines, Inc. I think it is important to let these girls/women know that their
concerns are not unusual. They need to know that others have experienced
the same issues and that there are solutions to their issues.
The scholarship for my commercial rating gave me confidence in my flying
abilities and made me a much better and safer pilot. I am still working on
increasing my hours so that I will be able to assist with a local air lifeline
serving people with medical needs.
I feel truly blessed.”
(Lynn is also mentor to Kathryn Kiminski, 2014 Fly Now Award winner)
For 2015, I am proud to announce the

Multiengine Seaplane
“Seaplane flying has been one of the most rewarding and challenging
flying experiences I have encountered. Seaplane flying has certainly taught
me a great deal about true stick and rudder skills. Plus it is an exhilarating
blast! My next adventure, and opportunity to grow my skills as an aviator,
will be using the very generous 99s scholarship for attaining my multiengine seaplane rating. The 99s helped me receive my initial seaplane rating
in which I now actively teach. As an MEI, I will find an outlet do the same
with my multi-engine seaplane rating. The flying boat was one of the
pioneering methods for transporting passengers long distances. It's
inspiring and an honor to keep that tradition alive.
“I will soon be a descendent of this history and a flying boat Captain. I'm
humbled and very excited to challenge myself with my multi-engine
seaplane rating with support from the 99s AEMSF."
Victoria Williams Kentucky Bluegrass
Academic.
"I am a first-generation pilot chasing my dream to join the ranks of the
prestigious pilots who have come before me. My interest in aviation was
first sparked when I took a Young Eagles flight at 10 years old. Since then I
have been in love with all things aviation. I earned my Private Pilot License
shortly before graduating high school, and I have been a member of The
Ninety-Nines since early 2012. Joining was a wonderful decision and my
fellow Ninety-Nines have been a huge encouragement to me every step of
my journey. I am currently a Freshman working on my Instrument rating at
Eastern Kentucky University Aviation, and I plan to spend the next three
years here earning a Bachelor’s degree in Aviation Business Management
while also completing my Multi-Engine, Commercial, CFI, CFII, and MEI
ratings."

Kentucky Bluegrass
NCS also has a FLY NOW recipient from the Spring 2015 Awards.

All-Ohio Chapter News
by Linda Blodgett, All-Ohio Chapter
The All Ohio Chapter had a wonderful meeting at the
Port Clinton airport on September 20 with beautiful
flying weather for once.
We had our meeting at the new Liberty Aviation
Museum where they have a very pleasant restaurant to
eat either indoors or outdoors. It was an interesting meeting and we discussed coming
events and our membership. The museum is dedicated
to various phases of aviation and has interesting
displays throughout.
Speaker Col Harold Brown (retired)
We were lucky to have an unusual speaker, Harold
Brown, who had been a pilot of the Tuskegee flyers for
many years. The Tuskegee pilots flew the Red Tail
planes and were finally accepted as very successful
protection for the bombers.
Harold had an unusual upbringing. As a child in sixth
grade he always wanted to fly but his mother wanted
him to play piano and scheduled lessons for him every
week that he refused to attend. He would sit on the
bench and not touch the keys.
As a member of the Air Force, he didn't get overseas
until 1944. He was shot down and captured, but was
saved by a local constable and turned over to the
military and sent to a prisoner of war camp for several
months at the end of the war.
He was in the USAF for 23 years and retired as a
colonel. He was a graduate of OSU with a Masters and
a PhD and taught 22 years at Columbia.

His last assignment was at the Lockburne Air Force
Base in Columbus, Ohio.

Santori Library Dedication
Chicago Area Chapter member Gina Santori was
honored June 12th at the dedication of the Richard and
Gina Santori Public Library of Aurora. Gina’s generous
donation was a significant part of the funding for this
state of the art center for technology, information,
literacy, creativity, and community. The structure itself is
impressive and beautiful. It is a wonderful addition to the
riverfront corridor in Aurora.
Richard’s memory was
honored by those present as he was remembered as a
man who educated himself by reading the encyclopedia
and researching at the library.

Congratulations, Ladies!
We are so proud of our Chicago Area Chapter members
who have received recognition at the international level:
At the International 99s convention in Munich, Joan
Kerwin was awarded the Award of Achievement for
Contributions to The 99s; Leslie Prellwitz was elected to
the International 99s Board of Directors. Also at the
Banquet, member Ellen Herring was presented with a
silver Amelia Earhart medallion engraved with her six
years of service as an AEMSF Trustee as she ended her
two terms on the Trust.
Welcome to new members

Update from Santori Scholarship Winner,
Sarah Arnac
“I am now working at Scaled Composites on the Proteus
aircraft as a design engineer. (http://www.scaled.com/
projects/proteus). My partner, Nick Sheryka, and I just
finished a Sonex Waiex in July. I'm sure you know of
Mike Melvill and all of his amazing accomplishments - he
was kind enough to be our chase pilot and allow me to
ride in the back to take photos during the first flight. We
are still going through the flight test phase but hope to
have the forty hours completed within the next month or
two. I unfortunately have not been doing a lot of flying
recently, due to the build, but plan to get back in the air
and obtain some new ratings once N142YX is out of
flight test. I was able to visit the 99s booth at Oshkosh
this year - it was great to see all the women at
AirVenture! Scaled Composites helped to arrange for
me to give a talk on Aviation and Engineering there. The
chair of the session said that it was the highest number
of women and girls at a presentation he had seen, which
made me very happy!”

Indiana Dunes Chapter News
by Lynn Pergher, Indiana Dunes Chapter Reporter
It may have been partly due to having to host the Section a few years ago, but it had begun to
seem like we, women who like the freedom of flying, who like to think we are just a little more
adventuresome than the average Josephine or Joe, for that matter, were just having meetings
about meetings. The Indiana Dunes Chapter had very few members actually flying, and it was
showing in our attendance. I was one of our Co-Chairmen at the time, and I wouldn’t have been
there if I didn’t feel obligated. It was just too boring! So what were we to do?
First of all, we had to decide to get rid
of all these meetings. We only really
need to have a business meeting a
couple times per year. The executive
board can meet in the meantime if
something comes up. If there is
something a committee needs to work
on, they can meet. We could still have
mini ground schools or speakers and
programs, but no more meetings to
determine the next meeting. Most
importantly, we had to fly again. We
had to make a commitment to
becoming a flying chapter with fly outs
at least every other month.
That last part seemed difficult to
achieve at first because many of our
members no longer have medicals and
have not been flying for many years.
With the help of some CFI’s, both our
own members and others, we have
been finding a way to rent planes,
share the costs, and use a CFI in each
plane. Now anyone who wants to fly
has that option. It doesn’t matter how
long it has been. It doesn’t matter if
she’s still a student. Everyone can and
Jan Topp waits with new members Heidi Handke, Emily Scott, and

Shannon Chandler for an introduction to Soaring.
Our members are becoming excited about our meetings again. We have several new members
who love the chance to fly with us. Students are getting extra practice at a much-reduced rate
than they normally pay. We are still playing with all the particulars, but we’re having interesting
non-meetings!

Lake Erie Chapter News

Dr. Christine Kettunen of Ashtabula,
Ohio, sponsored by the Lake Erie
Chapter of the 99s
Congratulations to Dr. Christine Kettunen on her induction into the
Forest of Friendship on June 20, 2015!
Speaking about her trip, Chris told us, “We had a great time in Atchison. I want to thank the
Lake Erie Chapter 99s for nominating me as their honoree this year. The Forest of Friendship
ceremony was very nice, and the Forest of Friendship grounds are beautiful. I really enjoyed
touring Amelia's home and the museum. Jonathan loved the kid's program and playing with
the other children. We didn't have a lot of time to see much else. We planned on flying;
however, since the weather didn't cooperate, we ended up driving at the last minute.
“We arrived just before the Friday evening program started. On Saturday following the
luncheon and presentation, we headed to Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri which is
approximately 2 hours from Atchison (on the way home). My niece was being promoted to
base commander, and she wanted us to attend her ceremony. So we went to visit and check
out the base. I was able to fly back out the following week to attend her official ceremony,
but Alan and Jonathan stayed home then. I was able to get two special tours, which were very
interesting. One was of the B-2 Stealth bomber, which is based at Whiteman, plus I was able
to tour the Oscar-1 missile launch unit.”
Chris got her first airplane ride when she was five years old, flown by a co-worker of her father.
She remembered how beautiful the sky looked that day. It was several years before she had
the opportunity to fly again. She thought about becoming a stewardess so she would be able
to fly again, but she also wanted to be a nurse. In 1981, she graduated from Kent State
University with an associate degree in nursing. Several years later, she became the Director of
Nursing for the Ashtabula City Health Department. Chris started taking flying lesson and going
to ground school at Kettunen Aeronautical (Ashtabula County Airport) in 1988, earning her
private license in 1989. Wanting to continue her nursing education, she was able to fly to the
Port Columbus Airport and go to classes at Capital University in Columbus where she earned
her Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing in 1991. Since then Chris joined the International
99s and the Lake Erie Chapter in 2002, earned her Instrument Rating in 1994, married her
flying instructor In 2005, earned her Master of Science Nursing Degree, a Doctor of Philosophy
Degree in Public Health Care Administration in 2006 and is currently working on her second
PhD Degree in Public Health. In between, she helps at all Lake Erie events and has served as
Vice Chairman and hosts and attends membership meetings and section meetings when
possible.

Dorothy McIntyre came to visit the Lake Erie Chapter in
March, 2013 with her daughter Dianne. They had lunch with
some of our members after our annual memorial visit to St.
Noel’s Church. We had a great visit with this wonderful lady
who helped pave the way for each woman pilot. Each year in
March, the Lake Erie Chapter visits a local church to
remember all women pilots and families who have gone on to
new horizons.
Dorothy, a retired school teacher and proud Black Female

to New Horizons on Sunday, August 30, 2015.
We are looking for a few good women!

Three Rivers Chapter News
by Lewie Wiese, Three Rivers Chapter Reporter
WOW! Summer is leaving us and we are looking forward to some beautiful fall flying. Hope to
see lots of color as we fly to the NCS Section Meeting in Minnesota.
Although not overly active as a chapter, our members have been busy within the aviation
community. I will list them as best I know.
Marcia Nellans attended the NCS Spring Section Meeting in Columbus, OH.
Lara Gaerte, President of Air Race Classic, Inc, obviously kept busy preparing for and being a
part of the Air Race Classic activities and events. She and her husband, owners of the FBO
Century Aviation in Auburn, IN, have purchased a 1991Waco and are busy giving biplane rides
in Northeast Indiana. Lara is also participating in the Reno Air Races as a timer.
Linda Murphy has been involved in lots of different activities. She volunteered at Sun ‘n Fun
with RV Camper Registration and got the opportunity to attend the WASP luncheon. Linda
helped the local EAA chapter on Young Eagles events and helped with the Air Race Classic
stop in Kalamazoo, MI. Over Labor Day, she helped at the Goshen Air Show and supported
the Ford Tri-Motor crew along with other areas.
Ellen Warford and Linda Murphy and were able to take in the Wings and Wheels event at
Kendallville, IN.
Betsy Berrys and Linda Murphy attended the Rusty Pilots Seminar at Smith Field, Fort Wayne,
IN.
Marty Wyall and Linda Murphy attended the Greater Fort Wayne Aviation Museum annual
dinner.
Marcia Nellans, Linda Murphy, and Lewie Wiese enjoyed a full day at the Auburn DeKalb
County Airport Open House and Hoosier Aviation Museum pancake breakfast. Weather was
absolutely superb!
Lewie Wiese was our representative at the 99s International Conference in Munich. After
returning from Germany, Lewie and a friend took a mystery trip. One of the mysteries was a
visit to the Champaign Aviation Museum at Grimes Field in Urbana, OH. The Champaign
Aviation Museum is working on restoring a World War II B-17 bomber, also known as
"Champaign Lady." My apologies to those who participated in events that I have missed.

Wisconsin Chapter News
by Kathy Ross, Wisconsin Chapter Reporter
Members of the Wisconsin Chapter have been
quite busy these past few months, with their
personal flying and in supporting aviation for
women.
Five WASP attendees at EAA Airventure 2015.
EAA Airventure:
WI 99s were in OSH en masse and volunteered hundreds of hours in various roles,
including assisting at the Ninety-Nines booth (where we enrolled several new WI
members!), attending the various activities for Women in Aviation Day, crewed and/
or helped with different aircraft and companies, transported visitors and much more!
WI 99s were valuable resources to EAA, via participation in committees, booths and
seminars.
Attendees re-lived WWII & Korean War history via the Warbird presentations and
fly-overs, meeting our treasured survivors and hearing their stories, experience the
“Tora-Tora-Tora” airshow – as well as greeting the Honor Flight veterans who
travelled to Washington on Friday. Hearing WASP stories was priceless.
Jessica Cox motivated all to rise above any perceived limitations. (Do read her book, “Disarm
Your Limits” – there are pearls of wisdom on each page.)
Members enjoyed time in the Tri-Motor, Goodyear Blimp, tours of the A350XB, the FedEx
A300 Cargo plane (special thanks to Darcy and Ken Kulesha for their efforts with the
A300!!!), vintage and homebuilt planes, hot air balloons and a myriad of other aircraft – to say
nothing of the learning (and shopping!) which occurred in the tents and hangars!!!
Karen Kalishek was a volunteer coordinator at the new EAA Pilot Proficiency Center (PPC).
NAFI and SAFE personnel staffed 14 Redbird simulators in various VFR and IFR scenarios.
Several seminars were available for stick and rudder and instrument flying. Often the 200-seat
capacity was exceeded.
Laurie Probst spent a second volunteer year on the Ford Tri-Motor ground crew. This graceful
piece of history still flies passengers at an affordable fee and provides a unique view at EAA –
or wherever she flies. It’s well worth the investment if ever one gets the chance to fly in her.
Marcy Lange spent her umpteenth year driving shuttle buses the entire week…always with a
smile and helping hand.
Many WI 99s helped staff the Ninety-Nines booth and were honored to ‘pin’ new members.
Like so many other women who provide behind-the-scenes EAA support, the hours spent are
labors of love.

First Joint Meeting
The WI and Chicago Area Chapters held their first joint meeting on August 23 at KENW
airport. Marie Spear gave an excellent presentation on the WASP program and their
museum at Avenger Field in Sweetwater, TX. ‘The Fly Girls’ video is recommended
viewing for anyone interested in this important part of our history as aviatrices. All agreed
joint gatherings are an excellent way for 99s to share ideas, happenings, news and
perhaps fly-ins or fly-outs.
