BIG PICTURE
LONG TERM ATHLETE DEVELOPMENT (LTAD)
Tennis Canada has developed a Long-term athlete development pathway (LTAD) for
players. It progresses through 7 steps from a player’s first exposure to the sport, to
being a professional player.
Partway through the development, the path splits and players can choose a more “High
Performance” stream or, continue to enjoy and improve in the “Tennis for Life” stream.

Program
Active Start
Most starter lessons fit into the “FUNdamentals” stage. This stage happens anywhere
people are introduced to the game: in parks, at community courts and school gyms.
The FUNdamentals Program is designed to build a solid foundation for future success
and promote enjoyment and improvement. It is a resource for Instructors, programmers
and play leaders to deliver effective lessons suited for this stage of development.

PROGRESSIVE TENNIS
Progressive Tennis uses a system of modified courts, racquets and balls scaled to
maximize learning for different levels and/or age groups. Just like many other sports
(e.g. Mini-soccer, T-Ball, etc.), scaling the game down to the size of the child speeds up
the learning process and make the game more fun.
The colour coded system is fully endorsed by the International Tennis Federation and
has been adopted by the majority of countries world-wide.
SYSTEM BASICS
Here is the basic progression. Levels are colour-coded for easy recognition:
RED TENNIS (6-8 year olds)
COURT: Net height: 80 cm (31.5 inches)
Length: 36 feet
Width: Singles: 18 feet
RACQUET: 19 or 21 inch (depending on player size)
BALL: Oversize Foam ball or oversized low-compression
felt ball
ORANGE TENNIS (9-10 year olds)
COURT: Net height: 80 cm (31.5 inches)
Length: 60 feet
Width: Singles: 21 feet Doubles: 27 feet
RACQUET: 23 or 25 inch (depending on player size)
BALL: Low Compression ball
GREEN TENNIS
Full-Court Transition (11+ year olds)
COURT: Net height: 91.5 cm (3 feet)
Length: 23.77 m (78 feet)
Width: Singles: 27 feet Doubles: 36 feet
RACQUET: 25 or 26 inch (depending on player size)
BALL: Transition ball
Adults and wheelchair players can also benefit greatly from mastering skills with the
smaller court and low-compression balls and build their skills to full court.

STRUCTURE OF DEVELOPMENT
The Tennis FUNdamentals Program identifies 4 skill sets required to play tennis
successfully. These are called the “I Can” skill sets.
These skill sets all follow the Progressive Tennis system. Each colour coded stage of
development has 2 levels of achievement.

In addition to the 4 “I Can” skill sets, players are also exposed to “I am a Good Sport”
behaviours. These include:
• Hug the racquet when the Instructor is talking
• Cooperate with a partner
• Pick up balls quickly
• Shake hands after each game
• Keep score out loud
• Make clear and fair line calls
• Compliment an opponent after a good shot

CREATING LESSONS
Various durations of lessons can be created (e.g. 1 hour, 1.5 hours, 2 hour camp, etc.)
as needed by adding together Play & Practice Activities. A full menu of activities is
provided. In addition, a “Lesson Planner” which follows these steps is included in this
curriculum.
The basic lesson structure unfolds in 4 steps:
MEET & GREET
Instructor sets the tone for the lesson with
personal contact.
WARM-UP
Instructor leads players to physically
prepare for the lesson.
PLAY & PRACTICE
Instructor organizes play and then runs
practice activities to improve play.
WRAP-UP
Instructor summarizes learning and
encourages practice outside of lesson time.
PLAY & PRACTICE STEP
The “I Can” skill sets are developed in Lesson step #3 (Play & Practice). This step
always starts with a Play Activity (“I Can Complete”). If time is available, lessons should
end with an “I Can Compete” Activity as well.
Play is the first order of business after the Warm-up. Rather than taking the
traditional path of “technique first”, we are going to take advantage of the fun of playing
tennis by using it as a motivational driver so players enjoy their experience.
DRAFT
6
Any Instructor with experience knows the most asked question in a junior lesson is,
“When can we play?” In this program, the answer is “Now!”
After the Play Activity, the lesson moves into Practice Activities with skills from each of
the “I Can” skill sets.
3. PLAY & PRACTICE
Instructor organizes play and then runs practice activities to improve play.
PLAY
“I Can Compete”
Learning to play is the goal of the lessons. Play is also the time where
Instructors should observe and evaluate the skills of the players.
PRACTICE
“I Can Rally”
PRACTICE
“I Can Start the Point”
PRACTICE
“I Can Play Net”
Technique will still play a critical role in the learning process; however, it will be used in
a relevant way to answer the question, “How can I play better?” Tennis learned this
way will capture the fun of playing soccer or hockey and avoid tennis lessons being like
the old cliché of taking poor violin lessons.
Play Activities should be run for 15-20 minutes (depending on the duration of the
lesson). Practice Activities are run for 8-12 minutes depending on the duration of the
lesson and the average age of the participants. The rule of thumb is to only run a
Practice Activity 2 minutes over the average age of the participants. For example,
if the average age is 7, the activity should run for no more than 9 minutes. For planning
purposes, Practice Activities are averaged for a 10 minute duration.

CREATING A PATHWAY
PROGRAM DESCRIPTIONS
Most recreation departments or clubs have a program guide which comes out for the
Spring and Summer. A sample of a program and descriptions are included to show how
a summer could be organized:
TENNIS LESSONS
All our lessons use the “Progressive Tennis” system of modified courts and balls
designed for the age and/or skill level of the players. Scale appropriate learning is used
by many other sports (e.g. T-Ball, Mini-soccer, etc.). Tennis is learned faster and easier
through this system.
RED LEVEL 1 (6-8 yrs)
This program introduces the foundational skills of tennis with an oversized lowcompression ball on a smaller court. Players learn basic rally, serve and net play skills
along with activities that build tennis specific coordination. Rules of play and “I am a
Good Sport” behaviours are also introduced.
RED LEVEL 2 (6-8 yrs)
This follow-up to Red Level 1 further refines the rally, serve, and net play skills. Players
learn to compete on a Red Court with oversized low-compression balls. “I am a Good
Sport” behaviours are reinforced as well.
ORANGE LEVEL 1 (9-10 yrs)
Orange tennis is played on a ¾ size court with a low-compression ball. Players learn
how to serve, rally, score and play at the net. “I am a Good Sport” behaviours are
reinforced.
ORANGE LEVEL 2 (9-10 yrs)
This follow-up to Orange Level 1 is on a ¾ size court with a low-compression ball.
Players learn to maintain a rally when receiving more challenging shots, serve with
improved placement, approach the net, and place volleys.
GREEN LEVEL 1.0 (11+ yrs and adults)
Players learn to serve, rally, score, and play at net in singles and doubles on a
regulation sized court with a low-compression transition ball. Lessons take players
through a progression of skill building activities that speed learning.
GREEN LEVEL 1.5 (11+ yrs and adults)
This follow-up to Green level 1 also uses a low-compression transition ball. Players
learn to rally with improved direction and height control, serve with better power and
control, return serves, and approach and play net with volleys and overheads.

TENNIS LEAGUES
Organized play is a great follow-up to lessons. Players shuffle partners and play short
rounds of doubles. Tennis never got easier, just show up and play! Sessions are
run by staff.
ORANGE BALL LEAGUE (9-10 yrs)
Pre-requisite: Orange level 2
GREEN BALL LEAGUE (Youth/Teen) (11-15 yrs)
Pre-requisite: Green level 1 or 2
GREEN BALL LEAGUE (Adult)
Pre-requisite: Green level 1 or 2
PROGRAM DURATIONS
Depending on the needs and constraints of the recreation department or facility,
programs can run for various durations and time. These are the recommended
durations:
Weekly programs:
RED LEVEL 1 & 2
• 1-2 lessons per week
• 1 hr lesson (length per lesson)
• 6 lessons total
ORANGE LEVEL 1 & 2/GREEN LEVEL 1.0 & 1.5
• 1-2 lessons per week
• 1.5 hr lesson (length per lesson)
• 6 lessons total
One week camps:
RED LEVEL 1 & 2
• 4 days per week (e.g., Mon-Thurs with Friday being a possible make-up day in
case of rain. For indoor facilities, Friday can be included as a “Competition day”)
• 2 hrs of lesson per day
ORANGE LEVEL 1 & 2/GREEN LEVEL 1.0 & 1.5
• 4 days per week (e.g., Mon-Thurs with Friday being a possible make-up day in
case of rain. For indoor facilities, Friday can be included as a “Competition day”)
• 2-3 hrs of lesson per day
DRAFT

COMBINING LEVELS
In some situations, there will not be enough participants to separate levels. The 6-8
year olds do need to be separated because of development issues. 9-12 year olds can
be grouped together for lessons and leagues. The Instructor would use the Green
Lesson plans for the combined group.
PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS
The following equipment is required to implement all the lessons:
• One 50 ball basket of Red Balls
• One 50 ball basket of Orange Balls
• One 50 ball basket of Green Balls
• 4 mini nets (or rope and chairs)
• 12 drop-down lines
ADVANCING LEVELS
Just like in other sports (e.g., swimming, figure skating, etc.) it is most effective to not
move players into a higher level unless they have achieved the appropriate skill
competencies. The Red and Orange levels of this program include skill assessment
cards and Certificates of Achievement.
Typically, players will need to repeat a level 2-3 times before advancing. When
repeating a level, it is important Instructors stress the importance of gaining competence
and development instead of giving the impression that players have “failed”.

COURT SET-UP OPTIONS
RED COURT OPTIONS
In many park programs, there are constraints that required different court set-ups.
There are a number of configurations that can be used for Red Tennis.
To make nets for Red courts, a rope can be
tied from the regulation net to the fence with
chairs to prop it up.
SIDEWAYS (1-6 COURTS)
Playing sideways across the court is the “official”
set-up for Red Tennis. Up to 6 courts can be
created (using drop-down lines and Red nets or
rope).
Sideline placed 3
feet from net
RED COURT DIMENSIONS
Each Red court is 36 feet long (regulation court doubles
sideline to doubles sideline) and 18 feet wide.
KEY:

11
DRAFT
RED COURT “LOW-BUDGET” OPTIONS
If there are limited Red nets and drop-down-lines (or supplies are not available at all), and
playing sideways is not an option (because it is too disturbing for adjacent courts), Red courts
can be created lengthwise as in the picture below. Red nets parallel to the regulation net.
LENGTHWISE (1-4 COURTS)
Four Red courts can be set-up to play
lengthwise on the court. Red nets and dropdown lines are required.
COURT 3
COURT 4
COURT 2
COURT 1
SERVICELINE TO SERVICELINE
(1-2 COURTS)
If no drop-down lines and Red nets are
available, 2 Red courts can be set-up
using the regulation net and playing
serviceline to serviceline.
12
DRAFT
ORANGE COURT OPTIONS
For Orange ¾ Court tennis, there are a number of options available. The main priority is to
create the Orange court baseline.
2 Orange ¾ Courts
2 Orange ¾ Courts can be created on 1
regulation court. To make a full width ¾
court, the sidelines are placed just on the
outside of the net post.
COURT 1
COURT 2
“NARROW” OPTION
If there are limited drip-down lines
available, it is acceptable to use ½ width
of the regulation court.

13
WARM-UP ACTIVITIES
The warm-up for starter players fulfils a number of functions:
•
•
•
Develops a good habit of physically preparing for play
Increases body temperature to reduce injury risk
Builds coordination
For starter players, the warm-ups should also be fun and active. The FUNdamentals
Program includes a number of warm-up activities:
Court Parts:
In this activity, the Instructor gets players to place their foot on various parts of the court.
The Instructor uses this activity to introduce players to the geography of the court.
Once players get to know the various parts, the Instructor calls a part and players jog to
it.
Shadow Strokes:
Players run along the various lines of the court doing specific footwork (run or side
shuffle) and performing strokes (forehand & backhand groundstrokes, volleys,
overheads).
Throw/Track/catch/Coordination:
Players can improve coordination by tossing the ball back and forth while side-shuffling
along a line. Various actions are performed to keep the activity challenging.
Tag Games:
Tag games allow players to warm-up and introduce an element of competition.
For a video of these activities, go to the Tennis Canada Instructor youtube

Throw Rally
Goal: To understand the concept of a rally.
Rules of the Game: Cooperatively throw underhand back and forth
with a partner. Players in pairs (each pair is a team). Team with the
longest rally wins. The rally is over when:
The ball bounces twice
The ball goes out of the designated play area or in the net
A player catches it in the air (doesn’t let it bounce)
Players must recover to a marker placed in the appropriate recovery
position (“Home base”)
TACTICAL/TECHNICAL DEVELOPMENT
During the activity only highlight one technical element. The activity may be repeated multiple times to cover other
elements.
Tactic: To understand the tactic of keeping the ball in play and outlasting your opponent with consistency
Coordination: Help players develop coordination by throwing underhand back and forth with a partner with these variations:
Throw and catch with different amount of bounces (after 1 bounce, after 2 bounces, etc.)
Throw and catch with 1 hand (dominant, non-dominant)
Movement Cycle: Set up a marker at the player’s baseline (Red Court). This is their Recovery Position (Home Base). The
players must return to the marker (using side-shuffles) before throwing the ball to their partner. Help players to understand
the “Movement Cycle” of going to the ball, setting-up with balance, and recovering before their partner catches.
Set-up & Impact Point: By having players catch the ball in a sideways position (exploring FH & BH sides) and only at waist
level, the concept of impact point is reinforced.

“I CAN RALLY”
PRACTICE ACTIVITY R2
Throw Cross-courts & Down-the-lines
Goal: To understand the tactic of placing the ball to move an
opponent around while maintaining a consistent rally.
Rules of the Game: Cooperatively throw underhand back and forth
to team mate. Players are in pairs. One player starts in the FH corner
and alternately throws a cross-court then a down-the-line. The other
player returns the ball directly to the first player. When the team
completes the sequence of 4 throws, they get a point. The single
player moves to the BH corner and they play again. Team with the
most points wins. The rally is over when:
The ball bounces twice or not at all (player catches it in air)
The ball goes out of the designated play area or in the net
Players must recover to “Home base” marker between each
shot.
TACTICAL/TECHNICAL DEVELOPMENT
During the activity only highlight one technical element. The activity may be repeated multiple times to cover other
elements.
Tactic: To understand the tactic of moving the opponent around and the terms “cross-court” and “down-the-line”.
Movement Cycle: Place markers at the recovery positions (Home Base). The players throw the ball to the partner’s marker
and must recover before their throw bounces using side-shuffles). They must also “beat the bounce” and be balanced and
ready before the partner’s ball bounces on their side of the court.
Set-up & Impact Point: Players must be ready and balanced before the ball bounces. By having players catch the ball in a
balanced sideways position (exploring FH & BH sides) and only at waist level, the concept of impact point is reinforced.
Bodywork: By using two hands on the ball and sending it with a body rotation, players practise turning their body during
groundstrokes (using an oversized ball like a soccer ball enhances the activity).

PRACTICE ACTIVITY R3
Floor Rally
Goal: To understand sending the ball in a straight line
Rules of the Game: Place targets at the intersection of the regulation
singles sideline and baseline, sideline and service line, etc.
Cooperatively push the ball along the ground to a partner. Start with
forehands then backhands then alternate with a ready position in
between each push.
One point is gained for the pair if the ball stays on the line until it
reaches the target. ½ Point if it stays on the line until ½ way (e.g.
centre mark).
TACTICAL/TECHNICAL DEVELOPMENT
During the activity only highlight one technical element.
The activity may be repeated multiple times to cover other elements.
.
Tactic: To understand the tactic of keeping the ball in play through control.
Grips: Help players develop an eastern forehand and backhand grip with a “laid-back” wrist
Impact Point: Help players experience an impact point that is out front
Hitting Zone: Help players experience an extended “Hitting Zone” by ‘pushing’ the ball forward with a laid-back wrist and a
sideways body position (reinforce the ball goes wherever the racquet face is ‘looking’ so make sure it faces the target for a
long distance during the stroke).

PRACTICE ACTIVITY R4
Floor Footwork
Goal: To experience quick ‘adjustment steps’ required for tennis and
to send the ball straight.
Rules of the Game: This game is played as a team relay. Resist the
urge to make it a race as performing the proper actions gets the
points. Players start by sending the ball with a push along the ground
from the designated start line to the finish line. The player then
performs footwork in relation to the ball while it is rolling,:
1st leg of the race: Stay right behind the ball while its rolling
2nd Leg: Stay in front of the ball
3rd & 4th Legs: Circle the ball (clockwise and counter clockwise)
One point is gained if the player performs the footwork until the ball
crosses the finish line.
TACTICAL/TECHNICAL DEVELOPMENT
During the activity only highlight one technical element. The activity may be repeated multiple times to cover other
elements.
Tactic: To understand the tactic of keeping the ball in play with consistency (good footwork & set-up means better
consistency).
Hitting Zone: Player uses an extended Hitting Zone to send the ball in a straight line. Reinforce that the racquet angle
determines the direction of the ball. A Hitting Zone is created as the racquet face extends forward towards the target.
Footwork: Help players experience quick adjustment steps which are required for tennis. Players should stay on the balls
of their feet and make small rapid steps:
Use quick, small steps and stay behind the ball
Use quick, small steps to stay in front of the ball
Use quick, small steps to circle the ball (first clockwise, then counter clockwise)

Floor Cross-courts & Down-thelines
Goal: To understand moving the opponent around by placing the ball.
Reinforce the tennis terminology of ‘crosscourt” and “down-the-line”.
Rules of the Game: Cooperatively push the ball back and forth to
each other. One player sends the ball only crosscourt. The other
sends the ball only down-the-line. One point is gained if a pair
completes a sequence of 2 cross courts and 2 down-the-lines. Switch
roles. Do FH only then BH only. The sequence doesn’t count if the ball
goes outside of the Red court area. Recover to “home base” between
each shot.
TACTICAL/TECHNICAL DEVELOPMENT
During the activity only highlight one technical element. The activity may be repeated multiple times to cover other
elements.
Tactic: Moving an opponent around
Grips: Help players develop an eastern forehand and backhand grip with a ‘laid-back” wrist
Impact Point: Help players experience an impact point that is out front.
Reception: Players must be in a sideways position with their racquet set at the impact point to receive the ball.
Hitting Zone: Help players experience an extended “Hitting Zone” by ‘pushing’ the ball forward with a laid-back wrist and a
sideways body position (reinforce the ball goes wherever the racquet face is ‘looking’ so make sure it faces the target for a

“I CAN RALLY”
PRACTICE ACTIVITY R6
Self-Rally
Goal: To practice ideally relating an Impact Point to the body.
Rules of the Game: Players start in positions as if they were rallying
to each other. Each player performs a self rally. Send the ball just
above head height and to a target on the ground. Players must selfrally continuously for 5 times to get a point. No point is awarded if the
player:
Lets the ball bounce more than once
Hits the ball facing the wrong way
Has the incorrect grip
Does not send to head height or above
TACTICAL/TECHNICAL DEVELOPMENT
During the activity only highlight one technical element. The activity may be repeated multiple times to cover other
elements.
Tactic: Keep the ball in play through a clean impact.
Impact Point: Help players zero in on a centred impact point in good relationship to their body. Place a marker on the
ground to aim the ball. An ideal impact point is located:
Waist level
Out front (in front of body)
Comfortable distance from body
Continental Grip: A continental grip will allow players to self-rally on both FH and BH sides.
“palm-up” is used for FH, “palm-down” is used for BH.
.
Sideways body position: Players need to adopt a sideways position when self-rallying.
“palm-up” is related to the FH. “palm-down” is related to the BH. Place a marker to orient feet.

Rally Ball
Goal: To consistently exchange the ball over the net using racquets.
Rules of the Game: Players are in teams (pairs) and cooperatively
rally back and forth to each other. Players must recover to “home
base” between every shot. Team with the longest rally wins. The rally
is over when:

Sky Ball
Goal: To understand the concept of starting the point with an
overhand throw action which simulates the overhead serve.
Rules of the Game: Cooperatively throw overhand back and forth
with a partner. Players in pairs (each pair is a team). To gain a point,
a player must start from a serve position behind the baseline and
throw the ball higher than the level of the fence. Their partner must
catch it after one bounce. No point is gained if:
The ball bounces twice
The ball goes out of the designated play area
A player catches it in the air (doesn’t let it bounce)
TACTICAL/TECHNICAL DEVELOPMENT
During the activity only highlight one technical element.
The activity may be repeated multiple times to cover other elements.
.
Tactic: To understand the tactic of starting the point with an overhead serve.
Trophy Position
Throwing Action: Help players develop an overhead “throwing action” by having them start the throw
in the “trophy position” and throwing upward (over the level of the fence). The throwing action has these
components:
Start with “trophy position”
Player turns and reaches up to release ball
Ensure throwing elbow stays beside body (doesn’t come forward)
Serve Position: Set up a marker at the player’s baseline (Red Court). Have them adopt a serve position (sideways with
front foot pointed at net post) and ensure they are behind the baseline to perform the throw.
Impact Point: Have players reach as high as they can to release the ball. Reinforce that there will be a full upward

PRACTICE ACTIVITY R10
Flying Target
Goal: To understand the concept of starting the point with an
overhead serve by simulating the coordination of tossing and throwing
actions.
Rules of the Game: Players are in teams (3-4 players/team).
Players start with one ball in each hand in a serve position (i.e., not
“trophy position”). Using a service toss, the player lifts a ball into the
air and then, using a throwing action, throws the ball in the racquet
hand at the tossed ball. Every hit of the tossed ball gains a point.
Players get 2 attempts to get points each turn. After each turn, they
switch with a teammate who is waiting behind. Play for 4 minutes
each game.
TACTICAL/TECHNICAL DEVELOPMENT
During the activity only highlight one technical element. The activity may be repeated multiple times to cover other

Tactic: To understand the tactic of Starting the point with an overhead serve.
Serve Position: Set up a marker at the player’s baseline (Red Court). Have them adopt a serve position (sideways with
front foot pointed at net post) and ensure they are behind the baseline to perform the action.
Toss & Throwing Action: Help players coordinate an accurate service toss with an overhead throwing action. Players
start in service position. Toss the ball by holding it in the fingers (palm sideways) and using their shoulder to lift the ball into
a position just higher than their Impact point. The throwing action has these components:
Player turns and reaches up to release ball (release the ball at full upward extension)
Ensure throwing elbow stays beside body (doesn’t come forward)

Players on team 2 always play on the Red court nearer the regulation
baselines.
Each pair spins for serve and plays a game up to 5 points (alternate
server every 2 points). ‘Sudden-death’ at 4-4. Once a player wins,
they put a marker on their team’s base. They then wait for a different
player to play on the other team. Keep playing and changing partners

PRACTICE ACTIVITY O9
Stop Tennis
Goal: To Play tennis (serve, rally, score).
Rules of the Game: Players are split into two teams. Each team has
a “base” (designated by a marker) at the side of the court. Players
from team 1 always play on one end of the Orange Court. Players on
team 2 always play on the other end. Matches do not start until
Instructor yells, “GO”.
Choose a "STOP" target, eg first to 5 points. All players start at the
same time and the first player to reach that target shouts "STOP" to
stop all the matches. In every match, the player who is leading when
“STOP” is shouted gets a win for his or her team. If matches are a
draw when "STOP" is shouted, one more point is played to find a
winner. Rotate players and play again.

Rules of the Game: Split the court into 3 lanes. Cooperatively rally
the ball back and forth to each other. One player is in the centre of
the court and sends the ball to the sides. The players at the sides
send the ball into the centre. Rotate other players in after 3 misses or,

Rules of the Game: Cooperatively rally back and forth to each other
on one half width of the full court. A player is placed at the side of the
net as a height reference and holds out their racquet. They call,
“Over” (hit the ball above the player”s racquet) or, “Under” (hit the ball
below the level of the racquet. Players get one point by completing 2
“over” shots and 1 “under” shot. Rotate players into each position.
TACTICAL/TECHNICAL DEVELOPMENT
During the activity only highlight one technical element. The activity may be repeated multiple times to cover other
elements.
Tactic: Using height to gain or take away time from an opponent.
Grips: Help players develop an eastern forehand and backhand grip with a “laid-back” wrist
Impact Point: Help players experience an impact point that is out front.
Racquet path: Players must control the height of the ball by making their racquet path go low to high (for a higher shot) or,

Serve & Return
Goal: To understand starting the point (singles & doubles).
Rules of the Game: Players are grouped into servers and returners.
Servers start in either singles or doubles serving positions (ensure all
players experience both). Returners place the ball cross court
(regardless if they receive the serve from the singles or doubles
servers) and past the service line.
If the returner can place the return into the target area, they gain a
point on that server. If they get 2 points on any server, they become a
server and that server becomes a returner.
TACTICAL/TECHNICAL DEVELOPMENT
During the activity only highlight one technical element. The activity may be repeated multiple times to cover other
elements.
Tactic: To understand starting the point with consistency (in singles and doubles).
Set-up: Server starts in proper serve location (behind Green baseline). Returner starts on Green baseline in ready position.
Impact Point: Server tosses the ball up and uses their FH to send the ball. Returner sends the ball back into the servers’
court. The returner can respond with either FH or BH (depending on serve placement). For both players impact should be:
Waist level
Out front (in front of body)

Servers start from the service line (position 1) and attempt to place the
ball to a BH target. If two different players on the team hit the BH
target, the team gets to move to the ¾ court line (position 2. Once
two players hit the target again, the team gets to go to the baseline

Approach Shot & Play Net
Goal: To experience approaching the net and finishing a point.
Rules of the Game: Players are in teams (“Net players” and
“Passers”) located at each end of the court. Each Net player and
Passer plays on ½ width of the court. The Passer starts by feeding a
short ball to the serviceline of the Net player. The Net player hits an
approach shot and must come to the net. The point is played out
Passer can hit any shot (lob, etc.).
If the Passer wins, they replace the Net player on the other side of the
court.
TACTICAL/TECHNICAL DEVELOPMENT
During the activity only highlight one technical element. The activity may be repeated multiple times to cover other
elements.
Tactic: Take the net and finish the point off short balls /passing a net player.
Reception: Set-up: Passers must set-up well to give time to place the ball.
Movement: Net players must split step to receive a volley or a lob.
Ball control: Reinforce that the Passers only have a ½ width court so keeping the ball lower (at the feet) or higher (over the
head) of the Net player is best. Net players can use angles (since they are closer) or short “drop shots”. (Use path, angle
and speed of racquet (PAS principles).

APPENDIX 3:
RUNNING LEAGUES
Doubles leagues are the ideal follow-up to any lesson program. Players rotate partners (mixed
genders) for an enjoyable time of low-key doubles play. The League is run by an Instructor.
Doubles leagues can use Orange (9-10 yrs) or Green (12+ yrs) courts and balls. Program leagues
to run after a set of lessons.
LEAGUE SCHEDULE (1.5 hrs x 4 sessions)

•
•
•
10 Min: Warm-up
5 Min: Organization
25 Min: Round #1
25 Min: Round #2
25 Min: Round #3
5 Min: Wrap-up
1) WARM-UP: (10 min)
Warm-up with rallies, volleys, and serve & returns. Use a set warm-up routine so
players can use it when playing on their own. Players warm-up with a partner on half the
width of the court.
• Groundstrokes (4 min)
• Volleys to groundstrokes (4 min)
• Serves & returns (2 min)
The warm-up time also gives a ‘buffer’ of extra time in case any players come late.
2) ORGANIZATION: (5 min)
• The Instructor running the league gathers all the players to organize them into
courts. Follow the schedule provided below and use the rotations provided:
3) ROTATIONS: (75 min)
• Players are rotated every 25 minutes. The rotation is done by a set-schedule.
Players will have a chance to play with and against each other over the course of
the league.
• The schedule is designed for maximum flexibility. All first round rotations start 1
& 2 vs 2 & 4, etc. For example, the Instructor can start a schedule with the
minimum number of players (e.g. only 7 players show up in a 10 player league).
If others show up late, simply have them wait until the next round (the
consequences of being late) and start the second round of the appropriate
rotation (e.g round 2 of a 10 player league).
4) WRAP-UP: (5 min)
Collect all the balls and thank all participants. Ask if they know their schedules in advance to
alert the Instructor if they will not be there on any of the weeks.

ROTATIONS
Rotations for 5 Players
A 5-player league is run on 1 court. One player sits off while the other four play doubles. After
every service game, the server rotates off. The Player who was off becomes a returner. If an
instructor runs the league, they should play singles with the player who is sitting off (Use,
‘Rotation for 6’ Schedule below).
Rotations for 6 Players
Note: League with 6-8 players is run on 2 courts

Rotations for 7 Players
Note: Ideally, when there are 7 players, the Instructor fills in to make the 8th player. If
there are only 7 players, and no Instructor to fill in, no player should sit off. The three
players will play 2 verses one. The single player gets the singles court, the doubles
players get the doubles court. Players rotate after every service game and the single
player is always the server.
