Bloorview - Holland Bloorview Foundation
Bloorview & & Bloorview a community of possibilities BLOORVIEW KIDS FOUNDATION 2007/2008 REPORT TO DONORS It takes a community You are the inspiration of this year’s report because you represent the heart of our community. And if ever there was a place that illustrated the African saying, “It takes a village to raise a child”, it is Bloorview Kids Rehab. Nothing prepares parents for the news that their child has been struck by a car or has developed a catastrophic illness, and will always live with some degree of disability. Some parents learn that their child has been born with a disability and will have life long healthcare and rehab needs. Bloorview is a lifeline to families in these circumstances, a place where their child receives world-class care from a multi-disciplinary team, including doctors, nurses, therapists, social workers, teachers, artists and child life specialists. The high standard of care Bloorview offers to each child is enabled by your financial support. Thank you! This year, our Foundation made it a priority to develop broader community support, asking for donations everywhere; from our village barber shop, to the neighbourhood hockey teams, to local schools, and from some of Toronto’s best chefs. We had a hunch that our “village” would respond to the needs of Bloorview’s children, and we were right! The Foundation increased its donor base by 53%, and celebrated by launching our first-ever gala dinner event, right in our own home! You, our neighbours and community partners, enable Bloorview to assist thousands of children with disabilities and their families each year. Your support allows us to push beyond the boundaries of traditional healthcare to offer the innovative programs, services and technologies that change the lives of children and families. From life skills, recreation and creative arts programs, to family education and resources, to the most sophisticated adaptive technologies, your dollars help to ensure that children with disabilities have the same opportunities and experiences as any other child. With your help, we are creating a world of possibilities for each child with a disability. We couldn’t do it without you. Thank you for so generously supporting Bloorview Kids Rehab. Valerie McMurtry, President and CEO, Bloorview Kids Foundation Geoff Wilson, Chair of Board, Bloorview Kids Foundation Bloorview The Teacher & We’ve learned that inspiration makes every single one of us a better student. On Thursday, November 8th, 2007 Bloorview honoured Ron Joyce for his $300,000 gift to Bloorview’s recent capital campaign. Inspired by Ron’s generosity, many of his closest friends travelled from across Canada to join Ron on a tour of the new facility and enjoyed a sumptuous dinner by Chef Bruce Woods and sponsored by Centro. Ron is an exceptional and generous philanthropist who has made a direct impact on the lives of thousands of children with disabilities from across Ontario and Canada. Community leaders who came out to honour and celebrate Ron’s philanthropy included: Deborah Alexander, Belinda Stronach, John and Judy Bragg, Ron Joyce with Kelly, Bloorview Ambassador. Learning from a community leader Hon. William G. Davis and Ron Joyce. Hon. William G. Davis, Michael D. Harris, John Hunkin and Susan Crocker, Rebecca MacDonald, G. Wallace F. McCain, Frank and Julie McKenna, Hon. Roy McMurtry, Valerie McMurtry, Tom and Pat Muir, Chris Portner, David Sobey, Hon. Ed Lumley, Dougal Macdonald, Sheila Jarvis and Dr. Golda Milo-Manson. Moved by the children he met during his visit, Ron announced during dinner an additional $300,000 to Bloorview to sustain funding for programs, services and research to enable children to be active participants in life. Bloorview is extremely proud and grateful to be counted among the many beneficiaries of Ron’s philanthropy in Canada. Ron Joyce, Susan Crocker and Rebecca MacDonald. Bloorview The Banker & We’ve learned that it can take years to build up a nest egg of trust. “I am from a culture where having a disability is often considered shameful. I did not realize the potential I possess within, until the day my family immigrated to Canada and I started receiving services from Bloorview Kids Rehab.” – Crystal Crystal is an incredibly social 19-year old, who has been coming to Bloorview for over 10 years. She was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy during her late infancy. With the support of her comprehensive healthcare team, Crystal has drawn on many Bloorview programs and services to maximize her potential. Crystal, Bloorview Ambassador. Most recently, Crystal has benefited from Bloorview’s Lifeskills and Wellness programs to assist her in the transition from adolescence to adulthood including: LIFEspan, The Independence Program and the recently launched Leaders in Training Program. is nothing to be ashamed of.” The first of its kind in Ontario, The Leaders in Training Program provides an early work experience for youth with disabilities. The program focuses on the development of work-related life skills through a combination of on-the-job work experience via job placement and educational sessions. “I am fine just as I am and there is nothing to be ashamed of.” This is where the Banker fits in! Capital One is committed to enabling people with disabilities to find their rightful place in the workforce. That’s why when they heard about Bloorview’s plan to launch a “Leaders in Training Program”, Capital One jumped at the chance to sponsor the initiative. With the generous support of corporate partners, like Capital One, Bloorview has pioneered some of the country’s most innovative Lifeskills programs, helping youth move from high school to postsecondary education to employment, independent living and community participation. “I am fine just as I am and there An investment that pays dividends for everyone “Since my disability impacts all aspects of my life, I was under the impression that I would never be ‘successful’ or accomplish anything in life. That was until I started working with the dedicated staff at Bloorview, who not only encouraged and assisted me to work on my difficulties, but also convinced me that I am fine just as I am and that there is nothing to be ashamed of. I am who I am today because the staff at Bloorview believed in me and saw something in me that no one else did,” stated Crystal. Unifying supporters to earn interest HGTV's "The Designer Guys" Anwar Mukhayesh, Allen Chan and Matt Davis with Ryan, Bloorview Ambassador in the new teen lounge. On June 19, 2007 Bloorview officially opened the Scotiabank Creative Arts Studio. Bloorview The Farmer & We’ve learned that the healthiest growth comes from nurturing the right seeds. Many people know James Duncan as a successful financial broker. What they don’t know is that he is cultivating relationships and growing The Bay Street Children’s Foundation to help kids with special needs. James and his wife, Cheryl, are parents of five beautiful daughters: quadruplets Alexandra, Lindsay, Stephanie and Riley, and Jennifer. Lindsay has benefited from the programs and services, at Bloorview, so James and Cheryl know first hand, the positive impact a comprehensive facility like Bloorview has on the lives of children and families. Founded by James, The Bay Street Children’s Foundation has raised more than $1 million for Bloorview. For over 12 years, James has been the driving force behind The Bay Street Pro Celebrity Softball Challenge. The two-day event, held at the Riverdale Flats, brings together celebrities, professional athletes, and brokers from Bay Street and Wall Street, to raise much-needed funds to ensure children with disabilities are equipped to meet life’s challenges. The Duncan Family. Sowing the seeds of inspiration Courtney, Bloorview Ambassador with Bike for Tykes riders. Bike for Tykes The annual event has already funded two therapeutic gymnasiums in Bloorview’s new facility. The gymnasiums are used for various programs including physiotherapy and recreational activities for inpatients and day patients, to maintain or improve health and their quality of life. Bike for Tykes is an annual fundraising event for spinning enthusiasts. This year’s event raised more than $135,000 with over 400 participants and 100 teams. In 2007, The Bay Street Children’s Foundation committed to a new $500,000 project to fund a training apartment at Bloorview where teens can practice activities for daily living. Generous support from donors, like The Bay Street Children’s Foundation, helps inspire children with disabilities to be active participants in their communities by providing kids with the right tools to harvest their potential. Bloorview The Tailor & We’ve learned that when everything fits seamlessly you make the best impression. On November 19th, Bloorview Kids Foundation held its inaugural gala fundraising event, An Evening of Possibility. Two hundred and fifty of Toronto’s most influential business and community leaders, The Hon. David C. Onley, The Lieutenant Governor of Ontario and HGTV’s The Designer Guys came out to support Bloorview for an intimate evening of champagne and superb gourmet food. The event launched the second annual Recipes for Possibility calendar. Yannick Bigourdan, Calendar Chair, Beverly Thomson, CTV Canada AM host and evening emcee and Kauri, Bloorview Ambassador. Dressing up and serving success Sheila Jarvis, President of Bloorview Kids Rehab, The Hon. David C. The calendar project helped raise over $400,000 for Bloorview. Thanks to Scotiabank, our evening sponsor, Deborah Alexander our Dinner Chair, Yannick Bigourdan, Calendar Chair, and all of our sponsors and guests for making this An Evening of Possibility. Bloorview The Florist & We’ve learned that making beautiful arrangements is a natural thing to do. Tribute gifts are an excellent way to celebrate birthdays, weddings, anniversaries, Bar and Bat Mitzvahs, graduations and other special occasions. This type of donation helps celebrate some of life’s most precious moments, while making a valuable contribution to thousands of children with disabilities. The Macdonald Family. Dougal Macdonald’s Birthday When Foundation Vice Chair, Dougal Macdonald, celebrated his birthday last year, over 57 tribute gifts were made to Bloorview in his honour. Paying tribute is a thing of beauty Rita Bolthezar, Susanne Holland’s cousin. Susanne Holland’s Tribute to her Cousin Susanne Holland’s cousin, Rita, decided for her 50th birthday she wanted to give gifts instead of receiving them. Rita gave each of her friends and family members $50 to do something special. Susanne was so inspired by her cousin’s generosity and creativity, she multiplied her cousin’s good wishes by 1,000 and sent a cheque for $50,000 to Bloorview in honour of Rita’s birthday. The Bigioni Family. In memory of Secondo Bigioni Donations in memory of Secondo Bigioni were directed towards the Emily Bigioni Endowment Fund to support respite care at Bloorview. Secondo was passionate about his granddaughter and supported Bloorview’s respite care programs, like the March Break Camps. This tribute is part of the Bigioni Family’s quest to raise $1 million to ensure Bloorview’s Family Support respite care programs are funded in perpetuity. Richard Flynn. In Memory of Richard Flynn Tom Flynn and Cathy Hampson’s generous dedication in memory of their son, Richie, will ensure many more children will enjoy the benefits from the Snoezelen room named in Richie’s honour.
