The Kids CARE Service Learning program includes homelessness studies (students learn about the human
and health needs of the homeless, visit a homeless residence and job placement facility and organize school
wide collection drives), wetlands ecology studies (students learn about the ecosystem, tour the Ballona
Wetlands, and remove non-native ice plant which threatens the ecological balance of the area), and
fisheries studies (students learn about the habitat and life cycle of the California Trout, raise trout from
eggs in the classroom and release trout in the Angeles National Forest creeks).

including internships with community members, and make a presentation at Career Expo Day for students
and the community), a children’s book publishing house (students publish children’s books and a service
learning newsletter to be distributed to the community), a “Harlem Renaissance Project” (students
participate in a year-ling project culminating in an African-American “Wax Museum” Day for the school

history of Santa Monica (presented at various community venues including the Santa Monica Museum),
and the maintenance of a native plant and drought tolerant garden (students produce an informative
brochure and act as docents for the garden during community tours with assistance from the Santa Monica
City School Gardens Program).

The service learning program includes student visits to Wilshire Retirement Center in the community,
regular correspondence with patients at the Veterans’ Hospitals, collection of unopened toiletries for a
battered children’s shelter, collection of money through “A Penny Full of Thoughtfulness” to be distributed
to various charities, volunteering at a special education school, monthly bake sales to raise money for
victims of natural disasters, and participation in the “Jump Rope for Heart Campaign.”

beautification project supported by the Santa Monica Gardens program and major community support.
Elementary students visit the greenhouse and are educated by high school students and receive seedlings
