WWII Hero Earl Riner Remembered
Former Lehigh Resident Pearl Harbor Survivor
Earl William Riner, one of the last
survivors of the USS Arizona, passed
away on March 10, 2012, at the age of
90. He was a former resident of Lehigh
and a graduate of Lehigh High School.
He was living in Paradise Cove outside of Pottsboro, TX at the time of his
death.
Earl was born December 5, 1921 in
Atoka to Thomas Eldin Riner and Estelle Barrett Riner. Earl and his family
were residents of Lehigh, and Earl was
a member of the last graduating class
of Lehigh High School, according to
James Nelson of Coalgate. Some of
his classmates were Freddie Brice,
Paul Nelson, and George Pruitt, Nelson
said.
Earl joined the U.S. Navy immediately after high school graduation. At
the time of the Japanese attack on Pearl
Harbor, Earl was a Petty Officer – Gunner’s Mate – on the USS Arizona. He,
along with a few of his fellow sailors,
were ultimately rescued by the crew of
the repair ship, USS Vestal.
The attack was two days after Earl’s
20th birthday, and Earl referred to December 7 as his “second birthday.”
Earl’s uniform and much of his flesh
were flash burned from his body. He
spent several months hospitalized before returning to the sea in late 1944
aboard the USS Lake Champlain.
After concluding his military career,
Earl William Riner,
U.S. Navy
Earl and his wife, Frances, were civilian employees at Perrin Air Force
Base near Sherman, Texas, for several years. They retired to Flowing Wells, and then Paradise Cove
in 1961. They raised Beagles, and
later English and German shorthair
pointers. They loved to fish Lake
Texoma and were avid quail and
dove hunters, while staying with
their herb, flower and vegetable
gardens and many hobbies.
Mr. Riner is survived by two
younger sisters, Merlene “Merle”
Bridgewater Nelson of Katy, TX,
and Peggy Dean Wesch of Addison, TX. Generations of nieces and
nephews will also fondly remember
“Uncle Earl.”

Announces For Sheriff
Hello, I’m Ray Pebworth and I
am running for the office of Coal
County Sheriff.
My wife Sherrie and I have been
married for 21 years and have three
children, Wes, Cody and Racheal.
Sherrie is a Licensed Practical
Nurse of 29 years and is employed
by the Family Practice Clinic in
Atoka.
Wes, a graduate of Coalgate
High School, lives in Durant
and is employed by the Choctaw
Nation of Oklahoma. Cody, also a
graduate of Coalgate High School,
lives in Coalgate and is employed
by Marvel Pipeline Construction.
Racheal is still at home and is a
student at Coalgate High School.
I am a graduate of Coalgate
High School. I served the City of
Coalgate Fire Department in the
capacity of firefighter, assistant
chief, and county fire marshal,
retiring with 20 years of service. I
received my C.L.E.E.T. training in
1997 for the purpose of being the
Coal County fire marshal.
I have 15 years of experience
in law enforcement, including
10 years as your undersheriff. I
believe this position has given me
the knowledge and experience to
be your next sheriff. I will only
make one campaign promise, and
that is to do the very best job I
possibly can for you.
My family and I would
appreciate your support in my bid
for sheriff in the June 26 Primary
Election.
Respectfully,
Ray Pebworth
Memorial Day Program

PAGE A-2—COALGATE RECORD REGIST ER—MAY 23, 2012
Monday is Memorial Day. Each year at this time I go to the Flanders Field
section of our local cemetery to pay tribute to four of my classmates that served
in Vietnam, Leonard Harjo, James Sherfield, Dana Muskgrove and Lynn
True. Friends and heroes that, in my mind, will be forever young.
Those that read our newspaper on a regular basis know that we honor
our veterans at every opportunity. There is no way we can ever repay their
sacrifices but we must see that their heroism is never forgotten.
One of the most moving experiences of my life was when the Vietnam
Moving Wall came to Holdenville. I was there everyday and, in the words of
one of the veterans, every day is Memorial Day to a veteran.
Here are some interesting statistics about the Vietnam Memorial Wall . . .
There are 58,267 names now listed on that polished black wall, including
those added in 2010.
The names are arranged in the order in which they were taken from us by date
and within each date the names are alphabetized. It is hard to believe it is 36
years since the last casualties.
The first known casualty was Richard B. Fitzgibbon, of North Weymouth,
Massachusetts. Listed by the U.S. Department of Defense as having been killed
on June 8, 1956. His name is listed on the Wall with that of his son, Marine
Corps Lance Cpl. Richard B. Fitzgibbon III, who was killed on September 7,
1965.
There are three sets of fathers and sons on the Wall.
39,996 on the Wall were just 22 or younger.
8,283 were just 19 years old.
The largest age group, 33,103 were 18 years old.
Twelve (12) soldiers on the Wall were 17 years old.

Five (5) soldiers on the Wall were

One (1) soldier, PFC Dan Bullock
was 15 years old.
997 soldiers were killed on their
first day in Vietnam...
1,448 soldiers were killed on their
last day in Vietnam...
Thirty-one (31) sets of brothers are
on the Wall.
Thirty-one (31) sets of parents lost
two of their sons.

why so many from one school.)
Eight (8) women are on the Wall.

244 soldiers were awarded the Medal
of Honor during the Vietnam War; 153 of
them are on the Wall.
Beallsville, Ohio with a population
of 475 lost 6 of her sons.
West Virginia had the highest
casualty rate per capita in the nation.
There are 711 West Virginians on the
Wall.

THANK YOU
Our mother's last days and her passing were made more
bearable due to the efforts and compassion of TenderCare
Hospice. Brenda Woods and Janet Battles were such a blessing to us when we needed it most.
We would like to thank everyone who was involved in our

of Christ for preparation of the luncheon meal, The Flower
Garden for helping with last minute preparations, Brown's

the Coronado Trail, stalked deer in
the Apache National Forest . And in
the patriotic camaraderie typical of
Morenci’s mining families, the nine
graduates of Morenci High enlisted as a
group in the Marine Corps. Their
service began on Independence Day,
1966.
Only three returned home.
The Buddies of Midvale - LeRoy
Tafoya, Jimmy Martinez, Tom
Gonzales were all boyhood friends
and lived on three consecutive streets
in Midvale, Utah on Fifth, Sixth and
Seventh avenues. They lived only a
few yards apart. They played ball at
the adjacent sandlot ball field. And
they all went to Vietnam.
In a span of 16 dark days in late
1967, all three would be killed. LeRoy
was killed on Wednesday, November
22nd, the fourth anniversary of John
F. Kennedy’s assassination. Jimmy
died less than 24 hours later on
Thanksgiving Day. Tom was shot dead
assaulting the enemy on December 7th,
Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day.
The most casualty deaths for a
single day was on January 31, 1968 ~
245 deaths.
The most casualty deaths for a
single month was May 1968 - 2,415
casualties were incurred.
For most Americans who read this
they will only see the numbers that
the Vietnam War created. To those of
us who survived the war, and to the
families of those who did not, we see
the faces, we feel the pain that these
numbers created. We are, until we too
pass away, haunted with these numbers,
because they were our friends, fathers,
husbands, wives, sons and daughters.
There are no noble wars, just noble
warriors…
—CC—
This past year I lost my father. He
was a World War II combat veteran.
The American Legion conducted
military rites at the cemetery and
presented me with the flag, along with
the following article . . .
A Soldier & His Flag
The Flag of the United States of
America embodies our country’s ideals
and moral principles and the values
we cherish as citizens. As a soldier
in the military, the Flag represents the
Constitution of the United States that I
pledge to defend and support even at
the risk of death.
The Flag is part of every ceremony
that involves the initial oath of
enlistment into the military, the
changing of military commanders
and military funerals. Old Glory is
so revered that it is raised up the flag
pole and lowered every evening in a
military ceremony 365 days a year on
every military post.
The American Flag’s significance
is so ingrained into the military that
even the folding of it has a very special
meaning. The symbolism for each fold
is:
First Fold: The symbol of life.
Second Fold: Our belief in eternal
life.
Third Fold: Honor and remembrance
of the veterans departing our ranks . . .
Fourth Fold: Represents our weaker
nature . . . it is to God we turn in times
of peace as well as in times of war for
His divine guidance.
Fifth Fold: A tribute to our country .
. . “Still our country, right or wrong.”
Sixth Fold: Where our hearts lie.
It is with our hearts that we “pledge
allegiance to the flag of the United
States of America, and to the Republic
for which it stands, one nation under
God, indivisible, with liberty and
justice for all.”
Seventh Fold: A tribute to our Armed
Forces . . . who protect our country and
our flag against all her enemies.
Eighth Fold: A tribute to the ones
who entered into the valley of the
shadow of death, that we might see the
light of day.
Ninth Fold: A tribute to womanhood
and Mothers . . . who mold the men and
women who have made this country
great.
Tenth Fold: A tribute to the father, for
he, too, has given his sons and daughters
for the defense of our country.
Eleventh Fold: Glorifies in the
Hebrews’ eyes, the God of Abraham,
Isaac and Jacob.
Twelfth Fold: Glorifies God the
Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.
Thirteenth Fold: Flag is completely
folded with the stars uppermost,
reminding us of our nation’s motto, “In
God We Trust.”
The flag given on behalf of my
father has a special place in our living
room . . . and in my heart.
Those who fought to preserve our
freedom will always be my heroes
and we will join countless others
this Memorial Day in saying “Thank
You.”
We are hoping for a huge crowd and
lots of fun and reminiscing

Coalgate Man Killed Card of Thanks
In Pickup Accident
A Coalgate man lost his life
Monday in an accident on U.S. 75,
eight miles north of the S.H. 3/U.S.
75 “Y” west of Coalgate.
Oklahoma Highway Patrol
trooper John Ivey said Garland
Douglas Seay, 47, was southbound
on U.S. 75 in a 2001 Chevrolet
pickup when the accident occurred
at 12:00 noon.
Ivey said the pickup went left
of center, over-corrected, and then

went off the right side of the roadway. The pickup traveled 247 feet
down a hill before going through a
fence and striking a tree, he said.
The vehicle rolled two-and-onehalf times before coming to rest
on its top.
Seay was pinned for approximately one hour. He was pronounced dead at the scene by the
medical examiner and transported
to Brown’s Funeral Home in Coalgate.
An open bottle of alcohol was
found in Seay’s pickup. In Ivey’s
opinion, alcohol may have contributed to the cause of the accident.
The Coal County Sheriff’s Office and the Coalgate Fire Department/Coal County EMS responded to the accident.

Register Now To Attend
Specialty Crops Workshop
Agricultural producers interested in possibly taking advantage of
crops that can be grown commercially but do not require hundreds
of acres should register now to attend the May 31 Oklahoma State
University Specialty Crops Workshop at Lane. “There are a number
of crops well-suited to small-scale
commercial production in Oklahoma and the region,” said Jim
Shrefler, OSU Cooperative Extension area horticulture specialist.
“To be effective, though, a grower
needs to be knowledgeable. The
workshop is sort of one-stop shopping, tackling the necessary topics
to get a grower up and running.”
The Thursday 9 a.m. to mid-af-
ternoon workshop will take place
at OSU’s Wes Watkins Agricultural Research and Extension Center located 10 miles east of Atoka
on S.H. 3. There is no cost to attend, but participants are asked to
pre-register by contacting Jennifer
Jensen, OSU Cooperative Extension risk management education
assistant, at 605-210-0191.
“Pre-registration helps us ensure that sufficient numbers of
lunches, refreshments and workshop materials are on hand so that
every participant has the best possible experience,” Jensen said.
Presentations will be held both
indoors and in the field, with an
emphasis on helping producers to
Memorial Day
Closings & Program
The Coal County courthouse,
Coalgate City Hall and Coal
County Health Department will
be closed Monday, May 28, in
observance of Memorial Day.
All offices will resume
regular hours of operation on
Tuesday, May 29.
Memorial Day is observed
on the last Monday of May.
Formerly known as Decoration
Day, it commemorates U.S.
soldiers who died while in the
military service.
First enacted to honor
Union and Confederate soldiers
following the American Civil
War, it was extended after World
War I to honor Americans who
have died in all wars.
Traditional observance of
Memorial Day has diminished
over the years. By the early
20th century, Memorial Day
was an occasion for more
general expressions of memory,
as people visited the graves of
their deceased relatives, whether
they had served in the military
or not. It also became a long
weekend increasingly devoted to
shopping, family gatherings, and
cookouts.
A Memorial Day program is
scheduled for 11:00 a.m. at VFW
Post 1198 in Coalgate.
Boyd and Melissa Casey are pleased to announce the
engagement of their daughter Morgan Elise Casey to Cody James
Newberry. Cody is the son of Jeff and Sindy Newberry of Atoka.
Morgan is a 2009 graduate of Coalgate High School and a 2012
graduate of Oklahoma State University. Cody is a 2007 graduate of
Atoka High School and a 2011 graduate of Oklahoma State University
and is employed as the Vocational Agriculture Instructor at Coalgate
Public Schools. The wedding will be July 21st, 2012 at the First Baptist
Church in Coalgate. All family and friends are invited to attend.

Weber Makes Plea Deal In
Child Porno and Sex Crimes
A former Tupelo man charged
in 2011 with possession of child
pornography and lewd or indecent
acts to two young girls entered into
a plea agreement on May 18. The
cases were set to go before a Coal
County jury on that day.
Rockland Lee Weber, 31, whose
address was listed as Tupelo in
2011 court records, is currently
shown with an Ada address.
Following an investigation by
the Coal County Sheriff’s Office,
Tupelo Police Department and
the Oklahoma State Bureau of
Investigation Crimes Against
Children Unit, Weber was
charged in June 2011 with felony
possession of child pornography.
Investigators seized computer
equipment belonging to Weber
and were able to retrieve both
child and adult pornography.

—Plavix Goes Generic!!!
By Joe Don Burns
I cannot tell you how many times I
have seen someone turn in a prescription
for a drug they cannot afford. The truly
sad thing is the number of times the
drug is important to maintaining life.
I see this happen with one drug more
than any other. That drug is Plavix.
Plavix is an anti-platelet drug used
after a stroke, heart attack, or other
cardiovascular disease to decrease the
risk of blood clots. Do you see the
importance?
The great news is, Plavix is going
generic! I do not have the cash price
yet, but it is supposed to be cheap!
How cheap? I am not sure. But by the
time this paper comes out, I will know
—and I bet I make you smile. If you have any questions, please
call.
Have a great day!
Wake Up America-27
Have you ever stopped to think why Obama uses “Executive Order” to accomplish his
personal agenda?
He has realized that when he signs an “Executive Order”, no one in the U.S. Senate nor the
U.S.House of Representatives will stand up for our Constitution and defend it in its entirety.
Every Senator and every Representative needs to go back and read the oath that they all
are required to take when they accept their respective offices.
On March 16th, Obama signed the “National Defense Resources Preparedness “ Executive
Order. That single Executive Order grants the power to “commandeer all U.S. domestic resources, including food and water, as well as seize all energy and transportation infrastructure inside the borders of the United States. Further, the Government can forcibly draft U.S.
citizens into the military and force U.S. citizens to fulfill “labor requirements for the purpose
of “national defense”.
We already have the best fighting force in the world today. The Army, Navy, Air Force. Marines, National Guard, Border Patrol, U.S. Marshals and associated branches. Why is this
Democrat administration continually trying to tear down and destroy this great nation. Do
you ever wonder where Obama received his education? Who raised this person? Where
are his roots? Why are his college records sealed? Where did he get the financing for
his education? Who were his classmates? Barack Obama is the first person elected to
the presidency of the United States that no one knows where he came from. Every one of
us who are natural born citizens have a birth certificate. Why has Obama spent so much
money trying to keep all of his records sealed? In fact, the first Executive Order that Mr.
Obama signed was related to sealed records. Ask yourself, why?
On March 26th the U.S. Supreme Court began hearing the case concerning the constitutionality of “Obama Care”. Over three days the arguments were heard from both sides. It is
amazing to me that only 27 states out of 50 were involved in this case. Where are the other
23? Theoretically, a decision will be given to the American public sometime in June to let us
know if Obama Care is constitutional. Every Supreme Court Justice needs to read EVERY
single page of this worthless document . I do not mean for them to read a part of it or make
a decision on a single part of it. I mean that each justice should be required to read every
page before he or she could make their final decision. EVERY PAGE!
After running across an article in “Canadian News”, the main topic was concerning Obama
endorsments. It seems that the platform of the CPUSA and Obama’s Democrat platform
run hand in hand. The CPUSA has endorsed Mr. Obama in 2004,2008, and also now in
2012. Also, the CPUSA believes that we should go back to the fiscal policies of Jimmy
Carter back in the 1970’s. It seems as though Mr. Obama and Mr. Carter are running neck
and neck in many catagories. The CPUSA was organized in the early 1900’s. The Communist Party USA will do every thing in its power to see Mr. Obama win another term.
If Obama is reelected for a second term, he will be a free man to do whatever he wants at
the expense of all Americans. Obama has benefited from the “American Dream”, yet he
has his own agenda. Instead of creating jobs in America, he subsidizes oil drilling in Brazil
and Columbia, yet degrades and spits on the oil and gas industry of this nation. He loans
millions of dollars to so called “Green Companies” just to see them pay off his supporters
and then go bankrupt.
Our ancestors who fought and died for this great country would roll over in their graves if
they knew what this president, his wife, and his administration are doing every single day
to further their socialist agenda. We can not stand another four years of this president.
Obama’s agenda of higher taxes, bigger government, and complete control of people’s
lives will not work here in the United States. Cutting government spending, lower taxes,
and less government control over people’s lives will get this nation going again.

to having child pornography on
his computer. Weber also admitted
that he was addicted to child
pornography and needed help with
his addiction, according to Horn’s
affidavit. He later pleaded not
guilty to the charge.
Possession of child pornography
is punishable by imprisonment up
to five years and a $5,000 fine.
In July 2011, Weber was charged
with committing lewd or indecent
acts to a child under 16 in January
2011. According to information
filed by the District Attorney’s
office, the crime carries a 3- to
20-year sentence in the state
penitentiary.
Weber pleaded no contest to the
pornography and lewd or indecent
acts in the May 18 plea agreement.
District Judge Richard E. Branam
has ordered that a pre-sentencing
investigation be completed no
later than June 18.
Weber’s sentencing is set for
June 21 at 10:30 a.m.

In closing, volunteer firefighters of Pontotoc County,
hold your heads high, you are
a vital part of your community.
We put in hundreds of hours a
year. Sometimes we are out
until early in the morning before going to our job. Most
people don’t know how much
time it consumes, running calls,
training, working on equipment
and cleaning the station. Why
do we do what we do? We do it
to save people and property, to
make our communities a safer
place to live, because this is who
we are and what we do. We do
it because it is a passion of ours.
Would we trade one moment of
it for anything? Not a chance.
People of Pontotoc County,
thank your volunteers. You
never know when you or your
family might need them.

Letter to
the Editor
After reading the article in
the Ada News on March 23,
2012 by Ada Fire Chief Marion
Harris about the role of volunteer firefighters, I was compelled to write this letter.
I have never been so insulted
and hurt. We have had critics
but who would have thought the
biggest critic would be a fellow
firefighter?
The fire service has evolved
over the years and volunteers
don’t just fight grass fires and
shuttle water. We run medical
calls and sometimes we may be
on scene with the patient for 1/2
to 1 hour before EMS can get
there. We monitor vitals, update
EMS on a patient’s condition
while they are coming to the
scene, determine if patient needs
to be airlifted and often have a
helicopter in the air before EMS
arrives. We respond to house
fires and we put that fire out.
We can’t wait for paid Depts.
We are trained and willing to
risk our lies to save someone inside. We respond to accidents
and try to have the patient extricated and backboarded when
EMS arrives. We respond to
search and rescue, car fires and
water rescues. In case of power
outages, we check on our residents and transport to shelters if
needed. We are also storm spotters When the tornado hit Joplin, MO there were hundreds of
volunteers there. We respond
to grassfires and can’t wait for a
paid Dept. We can’t save everything but we can give 100% and
we do.
The latest statistics state
there are about 1,096,250 firefighters of which 800,050 are
volunteers. That is a big void
for paid Depts. to fill.
Recently my dad had a medical emergency at church in Lula.
Kim Johnson and Clark Hansen
EMT from Lula Volunteer Fire
Dept. was there in five minutes
or less.
I was one of the first volunteers with the Lula Fire Dept.
serving about 16 years. Before
I moved to Missouri, Valley
View EMS trained me in their
initial First Responder Course.
I am now with the Walnut Grove

The 2012 Coalgate High School

– they competed in the state tournament, placing ninth overall. In individual rankings, junior Drew Sims tied
for tenth place and was invited to play
in the “Best in Oklahoma” High School

15 in their respective gender and class

Even though the Coalgate High

year, Coach Jeremy Reeder’s boys
proved to be some of the best high
school golfers in the state. The team
