Killing with kindness
W
hile Britain has
been named as the
fat lady of Europe,
it is now being extended to
man’s best friend as well.
More than one in five dogs is
obese, according to a survey
by pets’ charity the PDSA.
Experts claim that unless
action is taken, thousands
of dogs will die of related
conditions, such as heart
disease, diabetes and arthritis.
“We are killing through kindness,” said PDSA senior
vet Elaine Pendlebury.
“Instead of rewarding our
dogs with exercise and attention, we are just throwing
them treat after treat after
treat.
“As a result, they are becoming seriously overweight
and are reluctant to go for
walks or run it off.”
The PDSA, which runs a
number of clinics for fat
pets, said the number of
overweight dogs in Britain
last year rose to 21 per cent
compared to 17 per cent in
2003.
The findings were revealed
in a study of more than 4,000
dogs who were given a free
health check courtesy of
PDSA’s PetCheck vehicles.
During each examination,
a veterinary nurse checked
the general health of the
dogs, their weight, teeth,
eyes and the condition of
their coat.
The highest proportion of
overweight dogs was found
in the north-east, where 28
per cent are too tubby, while
the lowest was in the southeast, where just 12 per cent
were classed as obese.
Dental disease was most
prevalent in dogs in the
south-west, with 31 per cent
of dogs there experiencing
problems.
The figures were revealed
days after British women
were labelled the fattest in
Europe after topping an obesity league table of the EU’s
27 member countries which
showed a quarter were seriously overweight.

Seeing red in the kitchen
T
omatoes are an essential ingredient in Spanish cooking, which
are enjoyed in many ways
and at all times of the day.
For breakfast there is the
delicious tostada with garlic
and tomato, for lunch perhaps a tomato salad and for
the evening meal tomatoes
will appear in casseroles,
sauces or stuffed with meat
or fish.
So crazy are the Spaniards
about tomatoes, that Buñol,
in Valencia, hosts a crazy
Tomatina fiesta every August.
Essentially this is a massive
tomato fight in the street involving about 40,000 people
throwing 110 tons of the
fruit.
Since tomatoes like full sun
and well-watered soil, Spain
has a perfect climate for
growing them and produces
about three-million tons a
year.

Ingredients:
There are many varieties
of tomatoes from the sweet,
small cherry tomatoes, the
larger round tomato such as
the beefsteak and the plum
ones, which are oblong.
At the supermarket or
market, pick ones that are
firm but which give slightly when you press the flesh
with a finger.
To soften a tomato, take it
out of the plastic bag and
leave it on the kitchen windowsill for a day or two.
It is also easy to grow your
own tomatoes from seed.
Cherry tomatoes are particulary good because they
can be put in pots or hanging baskets.
If a recipe calls for fresh
tomatoes and you do not
have any on hand, you can
usually substitute crushed
canned tomatoes if you are
making a casserole or a sauce where it will be cooked or
simmered.

1 Remove stalk from the
top of each tomato. Slice
off the bottom of each
tomato and remove the
core.
1 cucumber, peeled, seeds removed, chopped
1 clove garlic
1 small red bell pepper, seeded and diced
1 small green bell pepper, seeded and diced
2 ripe tomatoes, seeded and chopped
3 cups tomato juice
1/4 cup dry white wine or sherry, or use chicken or
vegetable broth with a few teaspoons leon juice
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon freshly ground pepper
1 to 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon fresh lemon or lime juice
salt, to taste
4 tablespoons sour cream or yogurt, for garnish
4 tablespoons fresh parsley or coriander, for garnish
2 Cut a slice from the rounded end of each tomato
and scoop out the pulp
and seeds with a small
teaspoon. Strain out the
seeds and reserve the pulp
and juice for the filling.
3 Place anchovies in a little milk and let soak for
about five minutes to remove salt. Rinse, pat dry

4 Chop scallions finely and
mash with the cheese, capers, anchovies, caraway
seeds, salt and pepper.
5 Add reserved tomato
juice and pulp and mix
ingredients together thoroughly. Spoon the filling

6 Top with the reserved
tomatoes slices and serve
chilled.

1 In a blender, combine first 10 ingredients; blend until
juicy but still somewhat chunky. Season with lemon or
lime juice and salt, to taste.
2 Thoroughly chill before serving. Serve garnished with
sour cream and parsley sprigs, if desired.

Ingredients:
550g of Fideuà pasta
125g of mussels
125g of swordfish
125g of clams
125g of prawns
125g of Norway lobsters
✍
For the base:
1 grated tomato
1 clove of garlic
3 or 4 grains of saffron
1 onion
Paella food colouring (found in supermarket spice racks.)
Oil
Salt
Preparation:
Shell prawns and clams and cut the swordfish into strips.
Fry the tomato, onion and garlic adding the swordfish, mussels, clams and prawns together.
Boil the pasta with the food colouring and saffron for 20 minutes. The water should cover the pasta.
Add the Norway lobsters once the pasta begins to boil.
Add the base and wait for 5 to 10 minutes before serving and
then it is ready to eat.

new motoring solution, the
Concept i.
With the Concept i, Kia is
the first manufacturer to
offer a modular car to UK
customers enabling them to
choose almost every aspect
of their car from a simple
menu.
The i is part of Kia’s initiative to provide design-led
vehicles which target European customers.
Customers can choose the
engine, transmission and
trim specification of their
vehicle before opting for
the rear module and saloon,
hatch, estate or pick-up formats are all available.
Once the specification is
complete, the dealer can supply the individual modules for the customer to build
themselves in the comfort
of their own home garage.
Some parts, such as glass
and body panels, will be supplied in flat pack form.
The dealer can arrange
for customer collection or
the modules can be delivered to a UK address of the
customer’s choosing, at no
extra cost.
Managing director of Kia
Motors (UK) Ltd, Paul Philpott said: “Our design teams
in Germany and California
have been led by our satelli-
te office in Sweden.
“It’s an important step which will bring positive results for the brand in the UK
and Europe.
“And this is particularly
good for the environment
– any parts left over after
building the Concept i can
be returned to the local dealer which will make sure
they are plumbed back into
the supply chain.
“The target price is under
£4,000 which we think offers
excellent value.”
It was discovered in a recent survey that more 50
per cent of adults have built
some sort of flat-pack furniture in the last few years.
“It’s obviously a favourite
pastime of people in the
UK,” added Concept i selfbuild programme manager,
Janet Ester.
“The hard part is getting
the instruction manual right and all the right parts in
the boxes and that’s where
we have spent our time.
“We have trialled the idea
with desks in the Korean
design centre and we know
it can be done.
“You don’t even need a comprehensive tool kit – there’s
a simple Allen key included
in the kit.
“Although you do need a
wheel brace, which is available as an option.”
Transmission
options
range from a four-speed
automatic to a six-speed
manual, depending on customer choice.
The i adds extra flexibility to the car as a mode of
transport and, with the benefit of being able to change
the back half of the car, it
means that customers don’t
have to buy a new car when
their lifestyle changes.
They can simply change
their car by swapping the
hatch back portion for the
estate portion if a baby
arrives.
Paul Philpott said: “We’re
famous for our warranty
and we expect the Concept
i to follow suit although
the length of coverage will
vary according to the skill
level of the customer.
“A simple questionnaire
can reveal how adept they
are at building the car.
“A high score will get a seven year warranty, a low score about a couple of weeks.
“The beauty is that it’s all in
the hands of the customers
– with Concept i Kia is empowering and reacting to
what they can do.”
An on-sale date and pricing
is yet to be announced by
the Korean company, but it
currently has no i Kia.
